About Door Shakespeare Door Shakespeare was created under the umbrella of American Folklore Theater in collaboration with Blue Circle Theatre in 1995. The first season produced in the Garden at Björklunden included A Midsommer Night’s Dream and The Comedie of Errors, which played in conjunction with the same acting company performing across the peninsula at American Folklore Theatre. In 1999, the organization became its own non-profit and has since produced 34 striking productions (including those that you are seeing today) of classical and contemporary theater by timeless playwrights including William Shakespeare, Oliver Goldsmith, Jean Baptiste Moliere, Edmond Rostand, Richard Brinsley Sheridan, and Oscar Wilde in the Garden of Björklunden’s estate on Lake Michigan in Baileys Harbor. In early 2018, Amy Ensign and Michael Stebbins were hired as Door Shakespeare’s managing director and producing artistic director. Since that time, Door Shakespeare’s presence in the local and regional community has continued to grow and is enriched by educational programming, including Door Shakespeare’s Summer Theatre Program, Camp Will, as well as Will In The Woods lectures, Shake It Up Saturdays pre-show family activities, and Wine Nights. Door Shakespeare’s productions are regularly recognized in year-end top theatre lists, and for many local residents and visitors, Door Shakespeare has become a regular part of their Door County summer experience.

Door Shakespeare lost a dear friend when former Board of Directors member and immediate Past Chair Gary Buerstatte passed away in December of 2018 at the age of 70. A retired healthcare executive based in Milwaukee, Gary counted theater as one of his prime passions (there were also travel and sports—he was a diehard Green Bay Packers and Milwaukee Brewers fan); he brought that love and energy to Door Shakespeare throughout his many years on the Board. His steady leadership and guidance helped bring our company to the level of excellence it maintains today. We will greatly miss seeing Gary’s broad smile in the gardens of Björklunden, and will long remember him in our hearts.

Door Shakespeare lost another dear friend when John Hansen, an early supporter of the theater, and host/greeter for many years, passed suddenly in early February after a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. He was 66. A potter and teacher, John was also an enthusiastic supporter of grassroots theater. His warm welcome to Shakespeare’s theater space at Björklunden during its early days is well remembered by long-time patrons.

Welcome to Björklunden On behalf of the Björklunden staff and Lawrence University, welcome to the garden amphitheater and Door Shakespeare! Björklunden* is a 425-acre estate bequeathed to Lawrence University in 1963 by Donald and Winifred Boynton of Highland Park, Illinois. Winifred designed and built many of the wonderful structures on the property, including the Chapel. You may tour the Chapel on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1:00–4:00 p.m. Since 1980, Lawrence has offered a series of adult education seminars at Björklunden, interrupted only by a fire that destroyed the estate’s main lodge in 1993. In 1996, construction was completed on a new and larger facility and the Björklunden seminar program resumed. Following an expansion project in 2007, the splendid two-story, 37,000-square-foot lodge contains a great room, multi-purpose and seminar rooms, dining room and kitchen, as well as 22 guest rooms. This magnificent, year-round facility also allows Lawrence University’s mission as an undergraduate liberal arts college and conservatory of music to extend to its northern campus through a popular series of weekend student-faculty seminars, which have been running since 1996. We are happy to have Door Shakespeare as an independent, professional theatre company on our campus. Please enjoy the grounds and have a wonderful time at tonight’s production. As Winifred Boynton said of her beloved summer home: “Far removed from confusion and aggression, it offers a sanctuary for all.” May it be so for you as well. This season signals a first for Door Shakespeare—Henry V. To bring one of Shakespeare’s history plays to life underneath the stars of the Door County sky, here on the shores of Lake Michigan, presents an irresistible opportunity to demonstrate the growth and development of our company. Welcome Holidays on Ice by David Sedaris December 16 & 23, 2019 at 7pm, Vail Hall at Björklunden Select essays from the David Sedaris classic, Holidays on Ice, return once again to Door Shakespeare as an alternative to more mainstream holiday fare. Door Shakespeare’s producing artistic director, Michael Stebbins, is also the performer, and has been sharing Sedaris’ writing and producing his works for a number of years. Stebbins says, “My wish, Door Shakespeare’s wish, and I think Mr. Sedaris’ hope, is that we’ll continue to find the humor in the holiday and in the everyday.” Adult content and language. Parental discretion is advised. Festive holiday adornments (silver bell sweaters, strap-on antlers, Rudolph noses, and season-appropriate jewelry) are also advised.

Something’s Rotten in the State of Denmark by William Shakespeare and Joseph Wallace December 13, 14, & 15, 2019, Vail Hall at Björklunden. “At the dress rehearsal for Hamlet, young Tom is utterly exhausted from playing the title character. He closes his eyes for just a minute and opens the audiences’ to a version of the Bard’s masterpiece never before imagined. Uncle/Father Claudius can’t seem to remember anyone’s name and Hamlet’s dead-but biological father exhibits multiple personalities reminiscent of other famous literary phantoms. From the mysterious council of rabbits to Hamlet covering up Polonius’ death with ventriloquism, this comedy is sure to be a hit with the whole family!’ —Samuel French, Inc.

Earl of Westmoreland/ The Governor of Harfleur · Henry V Robert Shallow · The Merry Wives of Windsor Composer/Music Director Scott McKenna Campbell returns to Door Shakespeare after composing, directing music, and performing in the company’s 2017 and 2018 seasons. A designer, multi-instrumentalist, and actor, he has performed with the Ohio Shakespeare Festival, Shakespeare in Delaware Park, and the Maryland Shakespeare Company. He has written full lyrics and score for multiple new plays with Ohio Shakespeare and has provided music for both the Shakespeare Theatre Company’s Academy for Classical Acting and Mary Baldwin University. Scott earned his MLitt in Shakespeare and Performance from Mary Baldwin University and is a PhD candidate in Interdisciplinary Theatre Studies at UW-Madison.

He was last seen in 2018 as Conrade/Father Francis in Much Ado About Nothing and the Duke in The Comedy of Errors. In 2016 he was in A Midsummer Nights Dream and Julius Caesar. A graduate of UW-Madison’s Acting Specialist B.A. Program, he has been featured on stages all over the Midwest. Some favorite roles include Matt in Mr Burns: A Post Electric Play, Man 3 in The Ballad of Emmett Till, Francis Flute in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and the Lion in The Wiz. Past theatre credits include: In Tandem Theatre, Madison Repertory Theatre, Madison Opera, Children’s Theatre of Madison, Ordway Center for Performing Arts (Minneapolis), Optimist Theatre, Skylight Music Theater, First Stage, and Renaissance Theaterworks. Understudy · Henry V Arts Administration Intern · Box Office Manager Guinevere Casper is a senior at UW-Green Bay studying Musical Theatre and Creative Writing. Her experience in theatre is well-rounded, having served on run crews, wardrobe crews, and construction and tech crews for multiple productions at her university, but she has special interest in acting. Some of Guinevere’s favorite experiences have been as Cassius in Julius Caesar and Henrietta in Silent Sky. Guinevere is also a published author and has an interest in someday writing plays. When not in the theatre, she can be found somewhere sunny, usually with a book, and is originally from West Bend, WI.

This is not the first time he has performed in Door County, as he spent the fall seasons of 2000 and 2001 performing in American Folklore Theater’s production of The Bachelors. Michael began his professional career with the Ohio Shakespeare Festival in 1979, and has been a member of Actors’ Equity since 1991. He has performed with many theater companies throughout the Midwest including the Briar Street Theater in Chicago, the Milwaukee Rep, Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, Next Act Theatre, Forward Theater (founding member), Madison Rep, Theatre LILA, Four Seasons Theater, Children’s Theater of Madison, the Nebraska and Wisconsin Shakespeare Festivals and Artists Ensemble in Rockford, IL. She started at the Door County Advocate, was editor of Door County Magazine and, today, is the co-publisher of The Door Kewaunee Arts Guidebook and owner of Heidi Hodges Photography. Her first book, Hidden History of Sturgeon Bay, co-authored with Kathy Steebs, was published last summer. She is the mom to two teen sons who love the county as much as she does.

He has taught Scenography in the Theatre, Film, & Dance Department at Humboldt State University in northern California; Scenic/Lighting Design & Technology at UW-Eau Claire, and for four years was the resident scenic & lighting designer for the Sioux Falls Playhouse in South Dakota. He has worked as a freelance designer for such venues as the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, First Stage Children’s Theatre, Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, Dell’Arte International, Rochester Civic Theatre, Omaha Theatre Company for Young People, The Western Stage, and on several independent films.

Producing Artistic Director Archbishop of Canterbury/King Charles VI/Sir Thomas Erpingham · Henry V Michael Stebbins, Door Shakespeare’s Producing Artistic Director, has appeared on regional stages across the country, from NYC (off-Broadway’s Mint Theatre Company and The Public Theater) to CA (Berkeley Repertory Theatre) and many states in-between. Wisconsin credits include Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, Optimist Theatre, Skylight Music Theatre, and Theatre Gigante. His most recent directing credits include The Rochester Civic Theatre Company’s 2018-2019 season productions of Moon Over Buffalo and Barefoot in the Park. In 2005, after being based in NYC for 12 years, he was hired as the producing artistic director of Rep Stage, a regional theatre based in MD. While there he championed works by up-and-coming playwrights as well as theatrical gems by scribes of old. Michael received his BFA/MFA from UWM’s Professional Theatre Training Program. He is the recipient of a Helen Hayes Tribute Award for his work in the DC/MD/VA region, and is a member of Actors’ Equity Association. Actors’ Equity Association (“Equity”), founded in 1913, is the U.S. labor union that represents more than 51,000 actors and stage managers. In The Merry Wives of Windsor, disreputable Sir John Falstaff pursues two housewives, Mistress Ford and Mistress Page, who outwit him instead. Meanwhile, three suitors seek the hand of Anne Page, Mistress Page’s daughter.

Falstaff hopes to seduce the wives so he can gain access to their husbands’ wealth. Ford learns of Falstaff’s approaches and is consumed by jealousy. In disguise, he befriends Falstaff to learn about Mistress Ford’s behavior. The wives, however, trick Falstaff and Ford. As Falstaff visits Mistress Ford, Mistress Page announces that Ford is coming. Falstaff hides in a basket of dirty laundry and is thrown in the river. Another visit ends similarly: Falstaff disguises himself as “the fat woman of Brentford,” whom Ford hates. Ford beats “her” in anger. Finally, Falstaff is lured to a comical nighttime rendezvous where all of Windsor comes together, Falstaff is publicly humiliated, and Ford admits his folly. Playgoer’s Guide henry v Synopsis
Henry V begins at the English court, where the young king is persuaded that he has a claim to the throne of France. When the French dauphin, or heir apparent, insults him by sending him tennis balls, Henry launches his military expedition to France. Before departing, Henry learns that three of his nobles have betrayed him, and he orders their execution. Meanwhile, his old tavern companions grieve over Sir John Falstaff’s death, and then leave for France. Henry and his army lay siege to the French town of Harfleur, which surrenders. The Princess of France, Katherine, starts to learn English, but the French nobles are sure of success against Henry. Instead, Henry’s forces win a great victory at Agincourt. After a brief return to England, Henry comes back to France to claim his rights and to set up his marriage to Princess Katherine. A Biography · Courtesy of Folger Shakespeare Library William Shakespeare was probably born on about April 23, 1564, the date that is traditionally given for his birth. He was John and Mary Shakespeare’s oldest surviving child. Growing up as the big brother of the family, William had three younger brothers and two younger sisters. Their father, John Shakespeare, was a leatherworker, a prosperous businessman, as well as Stratford’s alderman, later, bailiff—much like a mayor. He married Mary Arden. William, as the son of a leading Stratford citizen, almost certainly attended Stratford’s grammar school. Like all such schools, its curriculum consisted of an intense emphasis on the Latin classics, including memorization, writing, and acting classic Latin plays. Shakespeare most likely attended until about age 15. In late 1582, William Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway. She was already expecting their first-born child, Susanna. Anne grew up just outside Stratford in the village of Shottery. In early 1585, the couple had twins, Judith and Hamnet. completing the family. In the years ahead, Anne and the children lived in Stratford while Shakespeare worked in London. The first definite mention of Shakespeare is in 1592 as an established London actor and playwright, mocked by a contemporary as a “Shake-scene.” The same writer alludes to one of Shakespeare’s earliest history plays, Henry VI, Part 3. The next year, in 1593, Shakespeare published a long poem, Venus and Adonis. For more than two decades, Shakespeare had multiple roles in the London theater as an actor, playwright, and, in time, a business partner in a major acting company, the Lord Chamberlain’s Men (renamed the King’s Men in 1603). He died on April 23, 1616—the traditional date of his birthday, though his precise birthdate is unknown. Shakespeare died on April 23, 1616, and was buried on April 25, 1616, in Holy Trinity Church, Stratford-upon-Avon.

Michael Stebbins, Door Shakespeare’s Producing Artistic Director, sat down with Henry V director, Matt Daniels, and The Merry Wives of Windsor director, Marcella Kearns.
Michael “Share with us how these two plays are connected, as I think they are an intriguing pairing. Many people think that The Merry Wives of Windsor is a comedy and Henry V is a history, so they couldn’t possibly be connected. I think it’s really interesting that there are characters that appear in both plays—crossover, if you will.” Matt “Well, although Henry V is a history play, it has plenty of comedy to go around! I think the biggest connection is the character of Sir John Falstaff, who was one of Henry’s closest friends back before he became king. Henry cut s Falstaff out of his life at the end of Henry IV Part II. Henry V deals with some of that aftermath as Falstaff’s friends are drafted to fight for Henry, and he has to deal with his old life colliding with the new one. Falstaff himself doesn’t appear in Henry V, though his presence is keenly felt in a few scenes because many of his companions in The Merry Wives of Windsor do find their way into Henry V. In Henry V, all of Falstaff’s companions in The Merry Wives of Windsor are drafted into service for Henry’s war against the French. So Bardolph, Nym, and Pistol are all there, along with Robin, Falstaff’s page, and Mistress Quickly. Several earls and dukes cross over between plays as they were still historically active in multiple reigns. In the case of Falstaff and his companions, these characters are not really historically accurate, and as such, Shakespeare was free to do with them as he pleased. Beyond that, there are several thematic resonances, they both have Welsh and French characters, and there is evidence that they were written with a couple of years of one another.” Marcella “Regarding those thematic resonances: Some of the most striking include what it means to come together as a people with differences for a common purpose, the boon of friendship and love, and tenacity in the face of great odds.” Michael “Shakespeare wrote these two plays during a very prolific time in his writing career. If he did indeed write these plays between 1597 and 1599, he was also writing, or had already penned, Henry IV Part II, Much Ado About Nothing, As You Like It, and Julius Caesar. Door Shakespeare is visiting Henry V for the first time, and the last time we shared The Merry Wives of Windsor with audiences was in 2004. Marcella and Matt, thank you for guiding these plays to the stage, and for being with us this summer.”

Who
is Scott Mckenna Campbell? Door Shakespeare audiences have been hearing the music of Scott McKenna Campbell—actor, composer, and musical director—for the past three years. As music is such an integral part of our productions, we asked Mr. Campbell to tell us a bit about his process, as it pertains to Door Shakespeare.
“Throughout my three seasons composing and directing music for Door Shakespeare, I’ve been privileged to help support directors in creating six all-acoustic, wholly original, musical soundscapes for the company. I take music in theatrical productions—and particularly in Shakespeare productions—seriously, because I believe that thoughtful music composition is one of the most effective ways to bridge the gap between older texts and modern audiences. Shakespeare festivals are, in many ways, the perfect laboratories for thinking about how music can complement classical plays in production. As a PhD candidate at UW-Madison, I love to incorporate research into my composition work, but much of the work for Door Shakespeare really begins with the rehearsal process itself. The condensed rehearsal schedule at Door means that problems get solved on the fly as new discoveries are made. As such, countless actor-musicians and collaborators have left their fingerprints on each of the dozens of songs and musical moments that I have coordinated for Door Shakespeare. The opportunity to develop new compositions alongside collaborative actor-musicians at Door Shakespeare ensures that no two shows sound wholly alike. While writing music can be a solitary job, making music—like making the plays that these songs support—belongs in the hands of the entire troupe. Composing for performances beneath Björklunden’s incredible maple tree has provided me a few new insights into the work of theatrical songwriting. I’ve learned that composing demands that the ensemble search out the songs, and sounds, and lyrics that belong to both the play text and the specific production. I’ve learned that outdoor theatre truly sings when backed by acoustic instruments played by visible onstage performers. I’ve learned that the connections that audience members form with onstage musicians gives performances an intimacy that films, and television, and most other theatre forms cannot. Working at Door Shakespeare demands specificity, clarity, and heart in reaching an audience that is never more than an arm’s length away from the performers.” We’re so glad that you’ve decided to join us for a few new songs beneath a summer sky.

Camp Will is a weeklong workshop dedicated to nurturing young people’s ability to voice their opinions, communicate their thoughts, and discover their creativity through ensemble work and the poetry of Shakespeare. Camp sessions are available for ages 7–18. Camp Will’s teaching artists come from all over the United States as part of the Door Shakespeare acting company. Daily sessions begin with theatre and improv games. Groups work independently in separate ensembles to approach Shakespeare’s works through rhythm, playful language exercises, and story drama. Older students work more intensely on vocal and physical techniques that enrich the meaning of Shakespeare’s text.
