MANITOBA THEATRE CENTRE

ANNUAL REPORT 2009|10

MTC co-founders John Hirsch (left) and Tom Hendry.

MTC co-founders John Hirsch and Tom Hendry met while studying at the University of Manitoba. They first joined forces to form a children’s theatre company and then later founded Theatre 77. In 1958, Theatre 77 merged with Winnipeg Little Theatre to become Canada’s first regional theatre – the Manitoba Theatre Centre. MTC spent its first decade in the Dominion Theatre until it was demolished to make way for the Richardson Building/Fairmont complex. During construction of the new theatre, MTC presented two seasons at the Centennial Concert Hall. On November 2, 1970, the Manitoba Theatre Centre opened at its present location with Bertolt Brecht’s A Man’s A Man, directed by John Hirsch. Since its founding, MTC has produced more than 500 plays with hundreds of well-known actors, including Len Cariou, Graham Greene, Martha Henry, Judd Hirsch, Tom Hulce, William Hurt, Tom Jackson, Robert Lepage, Seana McKenna, Eric Peterson, Gordon Pinsent, Keanu Reeves, Fiona Reid, R.H. Thomson, Kathleen Turner and Al Waxman. Now, more than 50 years after John Hirsch and Tom Hendry envisioned a centre for theatre in Manitoba, MTC continues to do all they dreamed of and more. Today, MTC produces 10 plays on two stages, a regional tour, two festivals and a wide range of youth programming. Artistic Director Steven Schipper is attuned to his audience, General Manager Zaz Bajon knows how to raise money and spend it wisely, and the community supports the theatre with grants, donations, volunteer time and thousands of subscriptions.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR Quality and balance. These are two of Manitoba Theatre Centre’s core values as identified in our strategic plan. I single them out because they hold the key to understanding our ongoing success and the reason why we’re celebrating another positive year, which saw an increase in attendance, our second highest box office sales ever and a tidy financial surplus. When applied to our artistic direction, quality and balance have particular resonance. During my tenure on the Board, I’ve observed that while the content of a play can vary greatly — from emotionally challenging to light-hearted and whimsical — the art form itself is treated with equal reverence. The art form is always held sacred and never compromised. Quality is assured for any play that graces our stages. While driven by quality, the playbill always strikes a balance between dramas, musicals and comedies. Furthermore, our two stages allow us to present a dynamic playbill of recognizable classics, powerful dramas and edgy, unconventional productions. Once again, this formula proved successful for the 2009/10 season. When applied to our community commitment, quality and balance is reflected in the variety, accessibility and affordability of our programming. Whether at the John Hirsch Mainstage, the Tom Hendry Warehouse, the Winnipeg Fringe and Master Playwright Theatre Festivals, the Regional Tour or our unique Theatre for Young Audiences program, MTC strives to offer a wide range of affordable theatre, making it clear there is indeed something for everyone at MTC. The balance comes in the affordability and accessibility of ticket pricing. In the end, balancing accessibility with potential revenue means ticket sales cover only approximately 50% of our operating costs. This is a deliberate decision, and thanks to the generous contributions and

support of our numerous corporate sponsors, individual donors and funders, including Arts Stabilization Manitoba, the MTC Foundation and the Winnipeg Foundation, we are able to offer world-class theatre to Manitobans at a truly affordable ticket price. When applied to our management practices, quality and balance guide the manner in which our staff make day-to-day decisions and undertake their assignments and responsibilities. They say it takes a village to raise a child; well, here, it takes a village to raise a curtain. I would like to offer my deepest appreciation for the efforts expended by our extraordinary villagers, led by our Artistic Director, Steven Schipper, and our General Manager, Zaz Bajon. We take great pride in our people, and it’s easy to see why. The breadth of their skills and depth of their commitment is reflected in the quality of our productions. We also have an embarrassment of riches at MTC in terms of the hundreds of volunteers who commit so generously of their time in support of our theatres. Thanks to each of you. Rest assured your efforts do not go unnoticed; they are an inspiration to all of us who are likewise, or otherwise, associated with MTC. Finally, I’d like to offer thanks to all of you, together with the many thousands of kindred spirits across the province who comprise our audience, for choosing to participate in the magic of theatre and sharing in the act of imagining. It has been a privilege serving as Chair.

MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER As the world economy continued to teeter, the Manitoba Theatre Centre worried this recession might be different than the others we’ve weathered, that attendance might not increase. But, true to form, people stayed close to home and spent their money in Manitoba, and at our theatres. As laid out in our Strategic Plan, our “large, theatrically sophisticated subscriber base” grew. Winnipeggers couldn’t resist our programming and casting, made evident by box office revenues of 53% of our total revenue (up one percent from the previous year). We also benefited from our ongoing investment in box office software, online ticket sales, and improvements in our website to better inform our patrons and enhance their experience of our theatre. Corporate donations and sponsorships posed our greatest challenge this season. Our new Director of Fund Development, Kristine Betker, reorganized the fundraising department to maximize the private funding that constitutes 12% of our revenue (down one percent from the previous year). In these difficult times, we are thankful government agencies maintained their support. I would like to thank the Government of Canada (through the Canada Council for the Arts and the Department of Canadian Heritage), the Province of Manitoba (through the Manitoba Arts Council and the Department of Culture, Heritage and Tourism), and the City of Winnipeg (through the Winnipeg Arts Council) for their ongoing commitment to making great theatre available to all Manitobans. Public funding made up 21% of our revenue (down one percent from the previous year).

GOVERNMENT SUPPORTERS

Of course, we continue to benefit from our Endowment Fund, which earned $470,126 this year. Thanks to the farsightedness of Endowment campaign co-chairs Gail Asper and Maureen Watchorn (and hundreds of donors and volunteers), miscellaneous income made up 14% of total revenue this year (up one percent from the previous year). To succeed, any theatre must embrace change, but there are moments when we would like to resist the inevitable. In particular, we will miss Chair Gerry Couture, who was instrumental in helping us plan our theatre’s strategy for the future, and Production Manager Larry Isacoff, who has played a vital part in our theatre’s life and work for three decades. All financial investments pale next to the time invested by our tireless and talented staff and board. Their intelligence and passion enriched the lives of our artists and our audiences this year, as in years past. We could not create theatre without them. A theatre cannot exist without people, and we have the best.

Zaz Bajon | GENERAL MANAGER

The Manitoba Theatre Centre operates as a non-profit charitable organization, led by the Artistic Director, General Manager, Board Chair and a volunteer Board of Trustees from the community. The management practices of MTC are based on five best practice principles: forward planning, accountability, monitoring, a sound control environment and ongoing liaison with the Board of Trustees. The Board’s input and agreement is sought regularly on the action plans developed by management. MTC owes its success this season to the dedicated, enthusiastic, accountable and responsible governance by board and staff. An open annual general meeting was held June 29, 2010, to report artistic and financial results to interested subscribers, patrons and community members.

MANDATE It is the aim of the Manitoba Theatre Centre to study, practice and promote all aspects of the dramatic art, with particular emphasis on professional production.

MISSION The Manitoba Theatre Centre exists to celebrate the widest spectrum of theatre art. Deeply rooted in the province of Manitoba, which gave it life and provides for its growth, MTC aspires to both reflect and inform the community it serves.

VISION

“BIG, BOLD

THEATRE… LOTS OF FUN” – CBC RADIO ON STRONG POISON

MTC’s theatres and our province will teem with artists and audiences sharing in the act of imagining.

VALUES QUALITY A commitment to quality is reflected in the writing of each play, in the actors, directors, and designers who create each production, and in the volunteers, staff, funders, and audiences who support it.

BALANCE A commitment to balance is evident in the variety of our playbill and in the wide range of programs MTC offers.

AFFORDABILITY A commitment to affordability is reflected in our marshalling of public and private-sector support to keep ticket prices as low as possible for all Manitobans.

ACCESSIBILITY A commitment to accessibility, that is, creating theatre throughout the city and the province, is evident in our festivals and touring productions.

MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR As I write this, people are working on top of the theatre high above my head, removing rock, insulation and rubber that was once waterproof. They are repairing our roof, a small inconvenience for those working below the din, a major expense for a theatre that believes in putting only a small buffer aside for a rainy day. We believe in the non-profit aspect of our company: our money is spent almost entirely on people who create illusion onstage and off. This year, painter Sue Groff made oak look like mahogany panelling, Foley artist John Gzowki made a sewing machine sound like an old car engine, and actor Stefanie Wiens made a series of drawers into a makeshift ladder. These artists create magic with little more than skill and imagination, and the least we can do to compensate for their theatrical sleight of hand is to keep them dry while they work. And so the roof. Its replacement seems a fitting anniversary gift for our building, which turns 40 this year, with no fanfare or fuss. In the first 12 years of our company’s existence, we were a little nomadic: taking shelter in the Dominion and Beacon theatres, and in the Centennial Concert Hall. But, since 1970, we have found not only shelter here, but sanctuary. Artists often take the time to tell me of the joy and creativity they have found here, that the skylit rehearsal hall and quirky off-centre stage are the scenes of their most treasured professional memories (and ours). One of my favourite memories this year was It’s a Wonderful Life, reborn as a radio play. Each performance was so beguiling that audiences shifted effortlessly from screen to stage: Donna Reed gave way to Mairi Babb, Jimmy Stewart surrendered to Mike Shara, and composer/pianist Danny Carroll interrupted only occasionally, to lead the cast in a series of commercial jingles created especially for our city. We were delighted to see so many Winnipeggers (past and present) onstage, and enthusiastic audiences were buoyed by this perennial tale of despair and redemption.

The Drowsy Chaperone made its long-awaited Winnipeg debut, and introduced us to Dean Paul Gibson, a West Coast legend, whose comic timing and emotional vulnerability endeared us to Man in Chair, one of the most unlikely characters ever to helm a Broadway show. But local performances stole the show. Debbie Maslowsky’s spit-takes, Thom Allison’s inspired buffoonery, and Tim Gledhill’s tap-dancing almost brought the roof down, so to speak. Audiences acknowledged the musical’s self-referential wit, goofy charm and big heart with a standing ovation every night. Then there was Top Girls at the Tom Hendry Theatre, a challenging play in a jaw-dropping production created by director Ann Hodges and designer Denyse Karn. One audience member, mesmerized by Pippa Domville in the lead and the formidable local supporting cast (not to mention Karn’s slowly migrating moon), claimed the production would have been equally at home on Broadway or the West End of London. Winnipeg has its own West End, its own Broadway, not far from our two theatres, and we are happy to make our home here. We work with astonishing local artists, and our audience is as warm and adventurous as any in the world. MTC subscribers brave snowstorms in mid-winter and searing heat mid-Fringe, and parking shortages year-round, because theatre is more to them than entertainment. Our theatre is a beacon to world-weary theatre-goers in search of revelation. They take refuge in our fortress, with its thick, concrete walls and new impermeable roof, and surrender to something timeless and essential, an art form that shelters their very soul.

EXPANDING THE THEATRE EXPERIENCE CULTIVATING TALENT MTC cultivates talent through a series of programs. By inviting students to attend MTC performances on our stages and in their schools, we help them imagine a life in the theatre, both as artists and as audience members. MTC’s scholarships helps bring those dreams within reach, while apprenticeships give artists the hands-on experience they need to bridge the gap between theory and practice. For those already working in the profession, we help broaden their scope. This season, actor, Fringe Festival administrator, and University of Manitoba student Ray Strachan served again as Apprentice Director with MTC AD Steven Schipper. “I found that working on The Drowsy Chaperone with Steven was a great learning experience and very much different from the first time we worked together. I found that he made our meetings more personal, which helped us build an even more trusting and productive relationship and opened up our communication, which is vital when directing a musical with a cast of 14. It was great to be part of a group with such a creative energy, which I believe is fostered in large part by Steven’s trust in those who he chooses to join him on the creative process. It was an honour, a privilege and a great time.” MTC’s Fringe Festival also offers low-risk opportunities for artists to stretch themselves and to use our festival as a professional springboard. We first noticed RobYn Slade when her self-penned, one-woman show Petey Mack: EMBALMED made the Winnipeg Free Press four-star list at our 2007 Fringe Festival. This year, she finally made her auspicious MTC debut as aesthetician-in-training Annelle Dupuy-Desoto in Steel Magnolias, becoming the critics’ darling yet again. MTC is proud to work with local artists and, this year, 42% of all actors at the Manitoba Theatre Centre were Manitobans. We are also proud that three plays – Strong Poison, It’s a Wonderful Life: A Radio Play, and Top Girls – featured casts composed almost entirely of Manitobans. Without our artists, our theatre would not exist, and we are proud to play some small part in their creative evolutions.

FESTIVALS & NEW CREATIONS THE WINNIPEG FRINGE THEATRE FESTIVAL In 2009, North America’s second largest Fringe Festival began mass producing originality on July 15. Throughout the 12-day festival, running to July 26, there were 146 companies from around the world presenting more than 1,200 performances to the Fringing masses. Indoor attendance totalled 81,565, up 8,843 from 2008.

provides an opportunity to showcase original plays and/or original stagings to a theatre-loving audience. MTC supports artists and their creative endeavours through the Fringe Festival, which returns 100% of the box office revenue to the artists. In 2009, a total of $535,867.25 in box office revenue was returned to artists, an increase of $60,565.25 from 2008.

The Manitoba Theatre Centre is the only regional theatre in Canada to produce a Fringe Festival. For 22 years, the Winnipeg Fringe has been presented as part of MTC’s ongoing commitment to developing new artists and audiences for live theatre. The Kids Fringe portion of the festival is a great example of how the festival finds new audiences by introducing children to live theatre in a fun, friendly and accessible way.

Indoor Attendance: 81,565 Outdoor Stage Attendance: 70,000 (including the record-breaking 53,810 who helped celebrate the 10th anniversary of Kids Fringe) Overall attendance: 151,565 Box Office Revenue: $535,867.25 (100% returned to artists) Number of Performing Companies: 146 Number of Indoor Performances: 1,190

Since all companies participating in the Fringe are accepted into the festival through a non-juried lottery, artistic innovation is allowed to flourish. The festival is an important springboard for local companies, many of which produce for the first time on a Fringe stage. The Fringe

2009 WINNIPEG FRINGE THEATRE FESTIVAL STATISTICS:

MASTER PLAYWRIGHT FESTIVAL Since 2001, MTC has provided opportunities for professional and emerging artists from a variety of organizations and independent companies to produce the work of a master playwright under the umbrella of a larger festival. This annual event also offers patrons the chance to immerse themselves in the work of a playwright who may not have a regular home on Winnipeg stages. In 2010, the 10th anniversary of the festival, theatre enthusiasts explored the life and work of British playwright Caryl Churchill, the first female playwright featured in the festival since its inception. Churchill’s work was explored through stage plays, mixed media performances, readings and the Churchill Unbound lecture series. In addition to the Manitoba Theatre Centre, participating companies were The Actors’ Fund of Canada, The Black Hole Theatre Company, Dancing Hen, Shoestring, Echo (Beach) Theatre, Eggshell Theatre Company, Sarasvàti

Productions, Scattergood Theatre, selardi productions, Skyline Theatre, Tara Players, Theatre Anywhere, Theatre Incarnate and the University of Winnipeg Department of Theatre and Film.

WORDPLAY This season, we delighted in producing two world premieres — Looking Back – West and a new translation of Mother Courage and Her Children — and in seeing plays that started at MTC find warm receptions well beyond our theatre. The following productions demonstrate how far MTC’s new plays travel:

These plays don’t just happen. Playwrights and their work must be nurtured. We commission new plays (MTC has five in various stages of development), provide dramaturgical support, program readings and workshops.

Alberta Theatre Projects (Calgary) - Shakespeare’s Dog (2008) Harlequin Productions (Olympia, WA) - Mating Dance of the Werewolf (2004) Neptune Theatre (Halifax) - Bigger Than Jesus (2004)

In our quest for new work to produce, we also accepted 85 script submissions this year — plays both new and previously produced that are then read by MTC staff and freelance analysts. This year, we hired 55 artists to read eight of the most promising scripts for MTC staff as part of our Wordplay reading series.

In the spring of 2010, Winnipeg playwright Maureen Hunter also travelled to England for a reading of her play Vinci, which had its premiere at MTC in 2002.

Apprenticeship applicants propose their own program of work study.

JEAN MURRAY – MORAY SINCLAIR THEATRE SCHOLARSHIP Almost 50 years ago, MTC established a scholarship dedicated to two Winnipeg personalities who contributed to the development of the Manitoba Theatre Centre, Jean Murray and Moray Sinclair. COMMUNITY SUPPORT ENDOWMENT FUND “If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them.” – Henry David Thoreau MTC’s Endowment Fund provides long-term financial security for the theatre by generating additional annual operating income earned from Endowment capital. The Endowment Fund enables us to plan confidently for an artistic future of the highest level: to build castles and dreams on solid financial ground. To ensure that programming excellence and the magic of great theatre – hallmarks of the MTC experience – are enjoyed by future generations. With thanks to the generosity and vision of our donors and the generous matching program from the Canadian Heritage Fund, which was 71 cents on the dollar, the Endowment Fund grew by $735,742 during the 2009/10 season and produced more than $470,000 in invested income from the Fund compared to $424,000 last year. Thank you to all of our Endowment Fund contributors for their shared vision, dedication and support.

A ROLE IN CANADA’S HISTORY: MTC RECOGNIZED AS A NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE OF CANADA In 2009, the Manitoba Theatre Centre was designated a National Historic Site of Canada. The Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada considered several factors in their determination of MTC’s national significance before recommending its designation as a National Historic Site. According to their report, the MTC Mainstage building at 174 Market Avenue, designed by architect Allan Waisman with former MTC Artistic Director Eddie Gilbert, is an excellent example of smallscale Brutalist architecture in Canada. Further, the MTC Mainstage building is an exceptional theatre building because it creates an intimate atmosphere between audience and actor. The Board also recognized MTC as a model regional theatre that played an important role in popularizing the regional theatre movement in Canada.

DIRECTOR’S CIRCLE & FRIENDS OF MTC Each year, hundreds of loyal individual and corporate donors return to MTC. For their generous support we offer a variety of benefits to enhance their theatrical experience. Benefits are based on the donation amount and range from the opportunity to purchase casual tickets before the general public, name recognition in varying formats, or invitations to exclusive special events. Their generosity pays for the essentials of theatre and helps make the magic happen.

During the 2009/10 season, Friends of MTC were invited to preview Act One of Strong Poison and listen to talks by Director Steven Schipper and Movement and Style Coach James Dodding, while enjoying red velvet cake and hot chocolate, courtesy of Salisbury House Restaurants. Members of our Director’s Circle were invited to a rehearsal of Steel Magnolias where they learned the “magic” of using water onstage and mingled afterwards with the cast and crew at a catered reception. To our corporate and individual friends: thank you so very much!
