MTC co-founders John Hirsch and Tom Hendry met while studying at the University of Manitoba. They first joined forces to form a children’s theatre company and then later founded Theatre 77. In 1958, Theatre 77 merged with Winnipeg Little Theatre to become Canada’s first regional theatre – the Manitoba Theatre Centre. MTC co-founders John Hirsch (left) and Tom Hendry.
MTC spent its first decade in the Dominion Theatre until it was demolished to make way for the Richardson Building/Fairmont complex. During construction of the new theatre, MTC presented two seasons at the Centennial Concert Hall. On November 2, 1970, the Manitoba Theatre Centre opened at its present location with Bertolt Brecht’s A Man’s A Man, directed by John Hirsch. Since its founding, MTC has produced more than 500 plays with hundreds of well-known actors, including Len Cariou, Graham Greene, Martha Henry, Judd Hirsch, Tom Hulce, William Hurt, Tom Jackson, Robert Lepage, Seana McKenna, Eric Peterson, Gordon Pinsent, Keanu Reeves, Fiona Reid, R.H. Thomson, Kathleen Turner and Al Waxman. Now, more than 50 years after John Hirsch and Tom Hendry envisioned a centre for theatre in Manitoba, MTC continues to do all they dreamed of and more. Today, MTC produces 10 plays on two stages, a regional tour, two festivals and a wide range of youth programming. Artistic Director Steven Schipper is attuned to his audience, General Manager Zaz Bajon knows how to raise money and spend it wisely, and the community supports the theatre with grants, donations, volunteer time and thousands of subscriptions.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR Our 2010/11 year was truly remarkable. We began our year with a record number of visitors attending the 2010 Fringe Festival. The indoor attendance at the 23rd Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival totaled 86,717, an increase of nearly 5,400 over last year’s record attendance, resulting in over $600,000 being returned to the performers. This milestone was followed by even more good news as we learned that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II had bestowed upon MTC a Royal designation. At a ceremony announcing the designation in October, Premier Greg Selinger said that “the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre is a mainstay in our province’s cultural life, with a solid reputation for artistic excellence and for being a well-managed organization.” Shortly after receiving this great news, the Board learned that Zaz Bajon – whose 30 years of dedicated service as General Manager were instrumental in fostering this reputation in the community – would be retiring at the end of the season. Zaz is known for running a tight financial ship, and this reputation is well earned, as we had another surplus budget for the past season. Zaz leaves MTC in a very strong financial position, with a healthy stabilization fund and an almost $600,000 Capital Fund. Not only are we losing Zaz’s financial leadership, but we are losing a classy and inspirational leader, one who is highly respected in the theatre community (500 friends and colleagues attended an event held on June 23 to celebrate his career). At this event, the Board of Trustees announced MTC would honour Zaz’s contribution to the theatre by conferring upon him the title of General Manager Emeritus. Although finding a replacement proved arduous, the Board unanimously approved Camilla Holland as his successor. A rising star, Camilla brings with her 15 years of progressive responsibility in the theatre community. She is extremely competent, shows tremendous capacity, and is positive, strategic and optimistic. We look forward to her leadership in the years ahead.
All of these remarkable events happened during another exceptional season at both the John Hirsch Mainstage and Tom Hendry Warehouse Theatres. For the first time, box office sales exceeded $4.2 million, with more than 132,000 patrons attending productions at our two stages. It seemed that virtually every production this season was a hit, generating buzz throughout the city as people discussed Jake’s Gift, White Christmas, Calendar Girls or The 39 Steps. This is due in no small part to Artistic Director Steven Schipper and the stellar production team at MTC. I offer my congratulations for another noteworthy season. Of course, I would be remiss if I did not also acknowledge the many artists who made the season such a success. There are many to thank among the amazing team that Zaz and Steven have assembled. I am confident our upcoming season will be every bit as successful as our last one. I would also like to thank the many volunteers who always do an outstanding job, including our Fringe Festival volunteers, the volunteer ushers at our two theatres, the many individuals who serve on various committees and, of course, our Board of Trustees. I must thank the many generous corporate and individual donors, our sponsors and, of course, the three levels of government who continue to support us year after year. I must also thank Arts Stabilization Manitoba for its continued support of MTC. Without the generosity of so many we would not be able to keep ticket prices affordable and our theatres accessible. At MTC, we believe that theatre can transform lives, but only if the plays are true and beautiful, and only if people can afford to see them; no one’s life will be transformed if the closest to our stage they can get is the sidewalk outside. Thank you for making this a truly remarkable year at MTC.

MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER With my 31st and last GM report, I would like to thank my colleagues at the Canada Council, the Manitoba Arts Council, the Winnipeg Arts Council and the Department of Culture for their years of support and friendship in helping me better appreciate and understand the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre’s place in the cultural ecology. I am delighted to be leaving MTC with a surplus of $9,032 in my last year, raising the total accumulated surplus in our Stabilization Fund to $729,061, and an Endowment Fund that will reach the $12-million mark with the matching funds from Canadian Heritage. Over the years, Canadian Heritage has been very supportive of our work, especially in the last few years, with its program of matching funds for our endowment campaign.
I would like to thank my colleagues on the board of the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres (PACT) as well as my friends across the country for their continued dedication to creating better working conditions in our theatres, raising government awareness of the importance of theatre, and improving the communication between professional theatres. How can I begin to say goodbye to the co-workers who have dedicated their working lives to making MTC a great and productive place to work and an important institution in our community? I know I am leaving the theatre in good hands with an incredible group of people. I cannot thank them enough for their time, support and commitment to providing the best theatre for our subscribers. In closing, I would like to wish everyone connected with this great organization a future of surpluses, record subscription sales, and sublime hours in our theatres.
It has been a privilege to work with each of the four Artistic Directors during my tenure here, particularly Steven Schipper, my partner of 22 years. They are among the many artists who, over the years, have contributed to my education and enhanced my enjoyment of the art.
Zaz Bajon | GENERAL MANAGER
GOVERNMENT SUPPORTERS The Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre operates as a non-profit charitable organization, led by the Artistic Director, General Manager, Board Chair and a volunteer Board of Trustees from the community. The management practices of MTC are based on five best practice principles: forward planning, accountability, monitoring, a sound control environment and ongoing liaison with the Board of Trustees. The Board’s input and agreement is sought regularly on the action plans developed by management. MTC owes its success this season to the dedicated, enthusiastic, accountable and responsible governance by board and staff. An open annual general meeting was held June 28, 2011, to report artistic and financial results to interested subscribers, patrons and community members.

MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR How do we measure success in the theatre? A budgetary surplus? We have that, and we’re grateful, but mere financial success seems too shallow a measure for an art form that regularly plumbs the depths of the human soul. What about ticket sales? If the soul plumbing is successful, surely the size of the audience will swell. Well, this season, all of our plays but one sold more casual tickets than expected. Yet even this measuring stick seems to fall a little short. A man can enter a crowded restaurant and order a meal, eat it all, pay his bill, and still leave with a vague sense of dissatisfaction. We have all had great dining experiences: food that played on our taste buds with a rich interplay of nostalgia and novelty, a table under a skylight with one perfect tulip in a vase before us, a waiter who seemed like a kind, witty friend five minutes after we met him. As we fold our napkins, we feel a profound contentment. We’d like to think that audiences found both profundity and contentment here in our theatre this year. Plays like One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and The Seafarer took us into the very heart of darkness, then lit a flickering candle of hope to guide us back to our own blessed lives. The 39 Steps made us laugh like children at the sheer pleasure of watching four people and a few props create trains, Scottish hillsides, and London theatres, as well as wartime intrigue and unexpected love. And, 123 years after Strindberg wrote Miss Julie, adapter Patrick Marber reminded us that the play’s still-scandalous power lies in its unflinching insight into our savage need for love. These plays and many others moved and enthralled us, and we could probably measure such satisfaction with exit surveys.
Did each audience member leave feeling that their time and money was well-spent? Did every actor feel both artistically and financially enriched? Even if everyone answered “yes” to these questions, the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre aspires to much more than the satisfaction of its citizens. Just as the British royal family derives its sense of duty from a divine purpose, our theatre exists to re-ignite the divine spark that exists in all people, royal or common. A truly great play inspires each of us to live better lives: to treat each man as our brother, and to create a peaceful and just society that extends beyond our borders and into the world. We can’t measure the success of such a play in a single year, or even a single person’s life. Its success is accretive, intangible, and timeless. If we are any closer to achieving this vast goal, we must credit my partner Zaz Bajon. A true man of the theatre, he was gripped by a passion for our art form at an early age, and has spent his whole life in service to the highest artistic and social ideals. He was our prince, always wearing a suit and a hanky in a workplace of denim and Kleenex, not to elevate himself above the crowd, it seemed to me, but out of respect for our sacred task. He has been the theatre’s champion and my friend, and I dare to speak for the millions of patrons and thousands of artists who have passed through our theatre during Zaz’s tenure when I say, with immeasurable gratitude, that we lose both our best artist and our best audience member with his departure.

EXPANDING THE THEATRE EXPERIENCE CULTIVATING TALENT MTC cultivates talent through a series of programs. By inviting students to attend MTC performances on our stages and in their schools, we help them imagine a life in the theatre, both as artists and as audience members. MTC’s scholarship program helps bring those dreams within reach, while apprenticeships give artists the hands-on experience they need to bridge the gap between theory and practice. For those already working in the profession, we help broaden their skills. This season, actor Krista Jackson served as Assistant Director to Gina Wilkinson on The Seafarer, with the goal of transitioning into a directing career. Wilkinson and Jackson had performed together at MTC in Quills, and the two artists quickly developed a constructive and trusting relationship. When Wilkinson and actor Tom Rooney left two weeks before opening due to Wilkinson’s health problems, Jackson was well-prepared to assume the directorial role, rehearsing actor Rob McLaughlin into Rooney’s role and sailing the show neatly through tech week. As CBC’s Joff Schmidt noted in his review: “What’s remarkable – and testament to the talent involved – is that if I hadn’t been told [about the replacements], I wouldn’t have guessed it from watching the opening night performance, which ran exceptionally smoothly.” MTC’s Winnipeg Fringe Festival also offers low-risk opportunities for artists to stretch themselves and to use our festival as a professional springboard. When Julia Mackey scored a hit at our 2009 Fringe with Jake’s Gift, her one-woman show about a Canadian veteran returning to Normandy for the 60th anniversary of D-Day, we thought it might be time for our theatre to program a play from the Fringe as part of our season. MTC became the first regional theatre to present Mackey’s show as part of a subscription series, and Mackey more than repaid our confidence in her, presenting one of the most successful plays in Tom Hendry Warehouse history. MTC is also proud to work with local artists and, this year, 39% of all actors at the Manitoba Theatre Centre were Manitobans. We are also proud that two plays – The Shunning and After Miss Julie – featured casts composed almost entirely of Manitobans. Without our artists, our theatre would not exist, and we are proud to play some small part in their creative evolutions.

FESTIVALS & NEW CREATIONS THE WINNIPEG FRINGE THEATRE FESTIVAL In 2010, North America’s second largest Fringe Festival went where no Fringe has gone before with Fringe and Beyond. From July 14-25, Fringe explorers had a record 155 theatrical planets to discover. Indoor attendance reached 86,717, up 5,364 from 2009. The Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre is the only regional theatre in Canada to produce a Fringe Festival. For 23 years, the Winnipeg Fringe has been presented as part of MTC’s ongoing commitment to developing new artists and audiences for live theatre. The Kids Fringe portion of the festival is a great example of how the festival finds new audiences by introducing children to live theatre in a fun, friendly and accessible way. In 2010, Kids Fringe welcomed 42,475 young visitors to the Mother Ship (aka Old Market Square). Since all companies participating in the Fringe are accepted into the festival through a non-juried lottery, artistic innovation is allowed to flourish. The festival is an important springboard for local companies, and many produce for the first time on a Fringe stage. The Fringe provides an opportunity to showcase both original plays and original stagings to
a theatre-loving audience. MTC supports artists and their creative endeavours through the Fringe Festival, which returns 100% of the box office revenue to the artists. In 2010, a total of $597,906 in box office revenue was returned to artists, an increase of more than $62,000 from 2009.

MASTER PLAYWRIGHT FESTIVAL Since 2001, the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre has provided opportunities for professional and emerging artists from a variety of organizations and independent companies to produce the work of a master playwright under the umbrella of a larger festival. This annual event also offers patrons the chance to immerse themselves in the work of a playwright who may not have a regular home on Winnipeg stages. In 2011, theatre enthusiasts were introduced to the life and work of Swedish author and playwright August Strindberg. The festival explored Strindberg’s work through stage plays, mixed media performances, readings and the Strindberg Unbound lecture series. In addition to MTC, participating companies were: 101.5 UMFM, the Actors’ Fund of Canada, the Adriana Theatre Collective, At Home Theatre Company, the Black Hole Theatre Company, Fancy Bred Theatre, Manitoba Association of
Playwrights, Naughty Sailboat, One Trunk Collective, Shoestring Players, Tara Players, Theatre Incarnate, Theatre on TAP, the University of Winnipeg Department of Theatre and Film, Westwood Collegiate, Winnipeg Jewish Theatre, and Winnipeg Mennonite Theatre.

WORDPLAY MTC produces an average of one new play each season. After last year’s two-premiere season, we redeveloped two existing plays instead of launching a premiere. Patrick Friesen decided to revisit the classic play he wrote a quarter century ago, revising The Shunning for clarity while retaining all of the play’s lyrical power. Tim Firth also wasn’t content to rest on his laurels. Though Calendar Girls has already been a stage and screen success in the United Kingdom, Firth spent time in Winnipeg during rehearsals, rewriting the script to make it more accessible to a North American audience. The generosity and professionalism of these two writers filled us with awe and gratitude.
We were also proud to see plays that started at MTC find warm receptions well beyond our theatre. In particular, Bigger Than Jesus (2003) traveled to Theatre de Quat’sous in Montreal and Sydney Theatre Company in Australia. These plays don’t just happen. Playwrights and their work must be nurtured. We commission new plays (MTC has five in various stages of development), we provide dramaturgical support, and we program readings and workshops. In our quest for new work to produce, we also accepted 89 script submissions this year: plays both new and previously produced that are then read by MTC staff and freelance analysts. This year, we hired 42 artists to read eight of the most promising scripts for MTC staff as part of our Wordplay reading series.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT ENDOWMENT FUND “Economy and compromise will always be necessary, but your gift has loosened their hold on our organization.” – Steven Schipper MTC’s Endowment Fund provides long-term financial security for the theatre by generating additional annual operating income earned from Endowment capital. With a strong Fund, MTC will continue to enjoy increased freedom to hire more actors, to create productions that are artistically rewarding and technically ambitious, and to balance our budgets for generations to come. This past year, with thanks to the generosity and vision of our donors and the generous matching program from the Canada Cultural Investment Fund, which was 71 cents on the dollar, the Endowment Fund grew by $615,342 during the 2010/11 season. MTC’s participation in The Winnipeg Foundation’s 90-Hour Challenge also generated over $9,000 for the Fund. From its onset, the Endowment Campaign was likened to the planting of an orchard, whose fruit could be enjoyed with each new season. This past year, that fruit took the form of over $490,000 in invested income that went directly into the art created on our two stages this season. Thank you to all of our Endowment Fund contributors for their vision and support.

SPECIAL EVENTS CONTINUED MTC/MANITOBA BAR ASSOCIATION COMMUNITY PLAY – GYPSY From May 3 to 7, the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre and the Manitoba Bar Association staged the musical Gypsy at the Tom Hendry Theatre. MTC’s 19th Community Play would not have been possible without the partnership of the MBA and the sponsorship of PwC. The MBA/MTC Community Play is an important annual fundraiser for the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre and our Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival. MTC is very grateful for the loyal support of the Manitoba Bar Association and their members, without whom we would not have raised more than $800,000 over the years. The Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre extends a heartfelt thank-you to the talented cast and hardworking crew, as well as our many volunteers, sponsors, advertisers and audience members.

ROYALLY HONOURED MTC RECEIVES ROYAL DESIGNATION On October 26, 2010, at a ceremony at the Manitoba Legislature, Premier Greg Selinger announced that the Manitoba Theatre Centre had been given a royal designation from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, permitting MTC to be called the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre. As the oldest English-language regional theatre in Canada, MTC has a long and storied history of enriching Manitoba’s cultural landscape, and this honour is a testament to MTC’s belief that theatre is an important part of this community. “The royal designation has filled us with humility rather than pride, and we are grateful to Her Majesty and the Government of Manitoba for the distinction. This honour reaffirms our belief that live theatre can transform lives, one play at a time,” said MTC Artistic Director Steven Schipper. MTC is the second Canadian theatre to receive this honour. It has been more than 100 years since King Edward VII honoured the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto with a royal designation.

DIRECTOR’S CIRCLE & FRIENDS OF MTC Each year, hundreds of loyal individual and corporate supporters return to MTC with a generous annual gift that helps pay for many of the essentials of great theatre. These donors are part of every story we tell and help us open our doors wide with affordable ticket prices. For this support, we offer a variety of benefits – based on the donation amount – to enhance donors’ theatre-going experience. These benefits range from name recognition in various forms to invitations to exclusive special events, to the opportunity to attend an onstage rehearsal. During the 2010/11 season, Friends of
