ANNUAL 2011 REPORT 2012

As we pause to reflect on the 2011/12 season, Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s 72nd, we marvel at the strength and resilience of our organization. In the face of a prolonged global economic downturn that affected markets at home and on tour, the RWB maintained a steady forward momentum with its hallmark determination and dynamic spirit. Despite many challenges this season, RWB boasts an impressive list of achievements in 2011/12: the Company commissioned and premiered two brand new works in Winnipeg, co-produced a new creation by international dance icon Twyla Tharp that premiered in Atlanta in February, toured extensively across Canada and the United States and toured Northern Manitoba for the first time in 50 years. And, thanks to careful stewardship, RWB had a financially successful year. The celebration this year of the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II gave the season a special air of excitement and fanfare. The RWB feels particularly close to the Monarch, as the Company was the recipient of the first Royal designation granted by Her Majesty after her coronation. We were very proud to observe her 60th Anniversary with activities that included a special community celebration and a performance by RWB in Flin Flon, Manitoba and a visit by the Queen’s representatives, the Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba The Honourable Philip Lee, C.M., O.M. and Her Honour Mrs. Anita Lee, to the opening night performance of Nutcracker in Winnipeg on December 22nd. Our 2011/12 performance season at home included four strong programs that attracted healthy, enthusiastic audiences. The highlight was the World Premiere of Svengali, a full-length story ballet by acclaimed choreographer and long-time RWB collaborator Mark Godden, based on one of the most popular novels of the late 19th century. The work was given a creative twist when Godden and celebrated filmmaker Guy Maddin re-imagined the story in another compelling time and place. Svengali was a classical, seductive feast for the senses that earned the highest praise and five stars from local reviewers. Over 5,000 attended the World Premiere performances in October 2011. Our three other Winnipeg productions this season also created much excitement for our audiences. In December, families flocked to our holiday favourite, Nutcracker, in numbers that necessitated scheduling an additional matinee performance. In March, after an absence of nearly a decade, RWB’s popular full-length classic Giselle returned to the stage refreshed with refurbished sets and costumes and featuring Principal Dancer Vanessa Lawson, whose portrayal of the tragic lead captivated audiences and critics alike. Our season closer in May, a mixed repertoire program entitled Pure Ballet, was a pleasingly diverse showcase of works by some of North America’s most popular choreographers, including Peter Quanz and Mauricio Wainrot, and featured the World Premiere of Jorden Morris’
anticipated new ballet, The Doorway: Scenes from Leonard Cohen. The evening also included a touching farewell to departing soloists Emily Grizzell and Carrie Broda, both of whom have devoted their entire careers to this Company. In addition to creating enriching dance experiences for our home audience each season, the RWB’s extensive touring has been critical to its success for over seven decades. After the Company’s highly successful tour to Israel in 2010/11, the organization continues to work hard to maintain its distinguished international reputation. By the end of the 2011/12 season, of which 12 weeks were spent on the road, the RWB can now proudly say that in its history the Company has toured to 581 cities in 44 countries on five continents. Following a preview performance in Brandon, Manitoba and its World Premiere in Winnipeg, Svengali was taken on tour to Saskatoon, Regina, Ottawa, Vancouver, Nanaimo and Victoria, where it was performed for an additional 11,575 patrons. In Fall 2011, Wonderland was taken on a mid-western tour of Calgary, Edmonton and Minneapolis, Minnesota, where it worked its quirky magic on audiences that totalled close to 13,000. Nutcracker delighted holiday audiences in Cleveland, Ohio in early December. And, our big touring success this season was Moulin Rouge® – The Ballet, whose 17-city tour of the United States consistently drew sell-out crowds and standing ovations. By the end of this tour in April 2012, Moulin Rouge® – The Ballet had been seen by over 100,000 people since it premiered in 2009, making it the most successful ballet in RWB’s history. Our touring season concluded with the exciting news that RWB was invited to perform at the 80th Anniversary of the prestigious Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival in July 2012, RWB’s first appearance at this global dance mecca in nearly 50 years, since the Company was launched to international fame there in 1964. In 2011/12, the RWB School Professional Division continued its integral role in the organization in providing the highest calibre of classical ballet training to dancers and dance educators. The Professional Division attracted students from across Canada and around the world, and this year’s graduates have gone on to begin successful careers with the RWB and companies all over the globe. Their training was enhanced through the guidance
of many distinguished guest teachers, including Founding Director David Moroni, C.M., as well as academic partnerships with Norwood School and the University of Winnipeg. The RWB School Recreational Division grew this season, attracting over 1,300 students of all ages in Winnipeg and in six rural Manitoba communities. This season, as always, RWB worked with enthusiasm and commitment to deepen our connections with our community. In early October 2011, RWB opened its doors for its second annual Dance Downtown in celebration of Culture Days, with free handson activities and performances that showcased our dancers, students and an expanded array of local dance groups. Other community outreach included free public performances at Ballet in the Park in July, our Higher Horizons program that distributes complimentary tickets to the underprivileged, participation in the Cultural Access Pass Program that gives new Canadians free access to RWB shows, our subsidized student matinee performance and free open rehearsals, the School’s Concert Hour Ballet and Satellite Program that bring dance to communities outside Winnipeg and much more. For our success in the face of many challenges this season, we have many to thank. Our Company dancers and our students, for their hard work and dedication to providing the highest level of artistry and excellence in their performances. All who work off-stage and behind-the-scenes, including RWB’s Board of Directors, staff, faculty, crew, volunteers, Alumni members, Women’s Committee and many others, for their unparalleled commitment and their daily labour of love. Our funders, government partners, sponsors and donors for their continued generosity and support, without whom this organization could not exist. And, finally, our audience members and patrons, at home and on tour, whose enthusiasm and loyalty has firmly anchored Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet as one of the most solid performing arts organizations in this country. We have come through this season with renewed excitement for the future, as we already begin artistic plans for our 75th Anniversary in 2014/15. We will continue to make our city and our country proud.

RWB Season Highlights Winnipeg Season SVENGALI The Royal Winnipeg Ballet opened its 72nd performance season on October 19, 2011 with the World Premiere of a new creation, the full-length story ballet entitled Svengali. Created by esteemed choreographer and long-time RWB collaborator Mark Godden, Svengali was based on the 1894 novel Trilby by George du Maurier, one of the most popular literary works of its time. At the outset of the creation process, internationally-acclaimed filmmaker Guy Maddin collaborated with Godden to re-imagine the story in Weimar, Germany during the decadent days following the First World War. What resulted was a seductive feast for the senses, with crowdpleasing classical choreography, a pastiche score with many surprises, and lovely costumes by designer Paul Daigle. Svengali garnered the highest praise from local reviewers. To build anticipation for the Winnipeg premiere, RWB produced a sevenpart video series that gave viewers a behindthe-scenes look at the creation of the ballet from the rehearsal studio to the costume and set design shops to the stage.
NUTCRACKER Family favourite Nutcracker returned for seven performances during the holiday season, opening on December 22, 2011. This year, demand for tickets was so strong that a matinee performance was added on December 27th. Several community events were organized in conjunction with this year’s run, including a storybook reading at the Millennium Library with First Soloist Jo-Ann Sundermeier, the creation of an award-winning Nutcracker tree for the Festival of Trees and Lights at the Manitoba Hydro Building, public guest appearances by Filbert the Bear and an RWB float in the Santa Claus Parade. As part of a long-standing tradition of having local celebrities take part in the production, RWB invited CTV’s Rachel Lagace and CBC’s Nadia Kidwai to perform walk-on roles during the Party Scene in Act I. Audiences at the Centennial Concert Hall were treated to special activities that included holiday choirs, a family portrait booth, a colouring corner and appearances by Filbert. GISELLE After an absence from the stage of more than a decade, RWB’s Giselle returned to the Centennial Concert Hall from March 7 to 11, 2012, with beautifully refurbished sets and costumes. Principal Dancer Vanessa Lawson reprised her role as the heartbroken title character, which served as her breakout role with the Company when she last performed it in 2001. Having recovered from an injury that kept her from performing in the first two productions of the season, Lawson’s flawless performances as Giselle were applauded by critics and audiences alike. Audience members got into the spirit of Giselle by wearing white on opening night in homage to the “ballet blanc.” RWB also partnered with Muddy Water Tours to present a Haunted Moonlight Rendezvous on February 29th, a guided ghost-themed tour of Winnipeg’s most beautiful historic buildings.
PURE BALLET RWB concluded its 2011/12 season in May with a mixed repertoire program entitled Pure Ballet. The diverse evening featured the World Premiere of Jorden Morris’ anticipated new ballet, The Doorway: Scenes from Leonard Cohen, which interpreted five songs of the musical legend through dance. Canadian songstress Allison Crowe and Winnipeg duo Keith & Renée each performed one of the Cohen pieces live during the five performances. The production also included Peter Quanz’s critically-acclaimed piece Luminous with re-designed costumes by Anne Armit, which drew generous praise from local and national critics. Mauricio Wainrot’s powerful and moving Carmina Burana was also featured, to the audience’s delight. Finally, the program was graced with farewell performances by two of RWB’s departing soloists. After 15 years with the Company, First Soloist Emily Grizzell took to the RWB stage for the final time, dancing in an original new piece, rivalry/revelry, with one of her favourite partners, First Soloist Yosuke Mino, who choreographed the piece for the occasion. Second Soloist Carrie Broda bid farewell after 14 years with the RWB by performing the touching love duet Adagietto with her husband, RWB Soloist Alexander Gamayunov.

In 2011/12 the Satellite Program was offered to students in Altona, Beausejour, Letellier, Eriksdale, Gimli and St. Malo. The Satellite Program brings an awareness and appreciation for dance to Manitoba communities and may be the only opportunity for some students living in these areas to experience the joy of dance.
HIGHER HORIZONS Each year, the RWB’s Higher Horizons Program distributes complimentary tickets to students, disadvantaged young people, families and the disabled. In the 2011/12 season, approximately 825 tickets to RWB performances were provided to individuals and families through 33 community and social service organizations in Winnipeg and surrounding areas. These tickets provide opportunities for those who might not otherwise have the means to experience the beauty and artistry of live ballet. The Higher Horizons Program is generously supported by Presenting Sponsor BMO Financial Group, Manitoba Public Insurance and a grant in Memory of Peter D. Curry.
CONCERT HOUR BALLET In November 2011, the RWB School presented its Concert Hour Ballet Tour 2011. performance to students who would not otherwise have the opportunity to experience the performing arts. During the first week, students performed two shows per day at nine Winnipeg schools, and in the second week students toured to Portage la Prairie, Thompson, The Pas, Dauphin and Beausejour. The total audience for all shows on the tour was over 4,400. Feedback from the schools and communities was extremely positive. The RWB School is pleased to continue this program which has been presented for more than four decades and whose performances are often for many in the audience their first introduction to ballet and dance. Concert Hour Ballet was made possible by the generous support of Investors Group, RBC Foundation, a grant in Memory of Peter D. Curry and the Manitoba Arts Council.
BALLET IN THE PARK RWB continued its long-standing summer tradition with 2011’s Ballet in the Park, which took place from July 27th to 29th and was presented by Manitoba Lotteries. Over its three-day run, Ballet in the Park attracted more than 20,000 people to Assiniboine Park to see performances by students in the RWB School Professional Division, Recreational Division and Aspirant Program. Repertoire included La Vivandiere by Arthur Saint Leon, The Gap Between by Professional Division graduate Philippe Larouche, Drinking by Candle Light by student Mark Sampson, Tarantella by RWB faculty member Oleksandra Kondratyeva, and Sailors’ Dance by RWB faculty member Kristina Washchyshyn. Some 90 volunteers participated in the event.
EXPLORABILITY Designed for adults with varied movement abilities, this unique dance and selfexpression program allows participants to explore styles of movement, patterning and music in a fun, supportive environment. Many participants use devices like wheelchairs and walkers. Since the program’s inception in 2010/11, the RWB has offered three 10-week ExplorAbility sessions. In 2011/12, ten participants attended the first set of classes and six attended the second.
OPEN REHEARSALS Each season, RWB provides the general public with opportunities to sit in on a working rehearsal as RWB dancers and artistic staff prepare for upcoming performances. In 2011/12, RWB held three Open Rehearsals in connection with the productions Svengali, Giselle and Pure Ballet. A particular highlight was Allison Crowe’s surprise live performance of Leonard Cohen’s epic ballad “Hallelujah” during the rehearsal for Jorden Morris’ The Doorway: Scenes from Leonard Cohen, which had its World Premiere during Pure Ballet in May 2012.
BUILDING TOURS This year, RWB’s knowledgeable alumni and staff guided hundreds of curious visitors on a unique experience behind the scenes at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet Building, located in the heart of downtown Winnipeg at 380 Graham Avenue. Tours that include a walk through RWB’s wardrobe department, shoe room and rehearsal studios were offered to visitors from a variety of ages, backgrounds and interests.
BRING BRANDON This year, to continue an extremely popular program started in 2010/11, RWB once again organized a Bring Brandon performance. Brandon citizens were invited to attend the matinee performance of Nutcracker on Wednesday, December 28th in Winnipeg, and were granted a round trip from Brandon to the Centennial Concert Hall free of charge and offered discounted performance tickets. In addition to a healthy contingent of Brandon dance students, among this year’s participants were a group of Girl Guides and members of the military and their families.
CLASSES FOR NEW CANADIANS As a way to help welcome newcomers to Canada and introduce them to the Winnipeg arts community, the RWB School Recreational Division invited a group of children from youth programs run by the Immigrant and Refugee Council of Manitoba (IRCOM) to participate in a creative workshop conducted by School faculty member Claire Marshall in September 2011. A voiceover commentary
by Armit and Franz Schubert music from the new ballet accompanied the energetic runway program.
Community Generosity CREATIONS ENDOWMENT FUND The Creations Endowment Fund was established to provide ongoing financial support for all aspects of dance creation and production. Administered by The Winnipeg Foundation, the Fund generates annual interest income that is directed exclusively toward the creation of new ballets as well as the revitalization and refurbishment of current repertoire. This season, income from the Fund made it possible for RWB to undertake the creation of an original new ballet, Svengali, choreographed by Mark Godden, and for a partial refurbishment of the sets and costumes for Giselle. Gifts to the Fund during the 2011/12 season totalled $126,276. In March, 2012 we received $179,546 in matching funds from the Canada Cultural Investment Fund – Endowment Incentives Program, bringing the total in RWB’s Creations Endowment Fund to just over $14 million at June 30th. By the end of the fiscal year, most of the pledges to the Creations Endowment Fund campaign had been collected.
DAVID MORONI SCHOOL ENDOWMENT FUND Named after the RWB School Professional Division’s Founding Director, the David Moroni School Endowment Fund was established to ensure the long-term health and stability of the RWB School Professional Division. The campaign goal is to raise $5 million by 2014 for the Fund and, once fully endowed, to have the Fund generate approximately $200,000 in annual income. Gifts to the Fund during the 2011/12 season totalled $80,631. By way of matching funds, the RWB received $94,685 from the Canada Cultural Investment Fund – Endowment Incentives Program and $17,777 from The Winnipeg Foundation. The Fund, which is held and managed at the Foundation, had a total of over $1.1 million by June 30th.

The following week, for the first time in five years, the tour travelled to Northern Manitoba, with four school performances in Thompson, two in The Pas and one in Dauphin, as well as a community performance at the William Glesby Centre in Portage la Prairie. The performances began with a dance demonstration to introduce the audience to dance terminology, the history of ballet and a dancer’s training. The dancers then performed a mixed repertoire program comprised of excerpts from great classical ballets, contemporary dances and works choreographed especially for Concert Hour Ballet. This year, the program included selections from The Sleeping Beauty, Tarantella, Face and Notci-luxe. Audience response at the school and community performances was extremely positive.
