MTC co-founders John Hirsch and Tom Hendry met while studying at the University of Manitoba. They first joined forces to form a children’s theatre company and then later founded Theatre 77. In 1958, Theatre 77 merged with Winnipeg Little Theatre to become Canada’s first regional theatre – the Manitoba Theatre Centre. The Theatre Centre spent its first decade in the Dominion Theatre until it was demolished to make way for the Richardson Building/ Lombard Hotel complex. During construction of the new theatre, MTC presented two seasons at the Centennial Concert Hall. On November 2, 1970, the Manitoba Theatre Centre opened at its present location with Bertolt Brecht’s A Man’s A Man, directed by John Hirsch.
MTC co-founders, John Hirsch (left) and Tom Hendry.
Since its founding, MTC has produced 500 plays with hundreds of wellknown actors, including Len Cariou, Graham Greene, Martha Henry, Judd Hirsch, Tom Hulce, William Hurt, Tom Jackson, Robert Lepage, Seana McKenna, Eric Peterson, Gordon Pinsent, Keanu Reeves, Fiona Reid, R.H. Thomson, Kathleen Turner and Al Waxman. Now, 50 years after John Hirsch and Tom Hendry envisioned a centre for theatre in Manitoba, MTC continues to do all they dreamed of, and more. Today, MTC produces 10 plays on two stages, a regional tour, two festivals and a wide range of youth programming. Artistic Director Steven Schipper is attuned to his audience, General Manager Zaz Bajon knows how to raise money and spend it wisely, and the community supports the theatre with grants, donations, volunteer time and thousands of subscriptions.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR French philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau wrote, “As soon as public service ceases to be the chief business of the citizens and they would rather serve with their money than with their persons, the state is not far from its fall.” It is a strong statement, but one that Manitobans clearly understand and respect. Throughout its 50 years, MTC has been particularly blessed by the willingness of Winnipeggers to commit their time and energy. We now have 1,500 volunteers, including ushers, a board of trustees, committee members, receptionists, a librarian, Fringe Festival volunteers and more. To most patrons, ushers are the very face of MTC, greeting us upon our arrival and ensuring that our visit is pleasant. Many of these ushers also help us at the Fringe Festival, where volunteers have played a vital role in our success. Our librarian and our team of receptionists are just as integral to our operations, volunteering at the theatre every week, year in and year out.
We also must acknowledge the Board of Trustees and committee members whose expertise and commitment have been such a blessing to our theatre. You have led the organization well, ensuring our current stability while helping us pursue long-term dreams. Volunteering is a truly unselfish act because you share with us your most precious commodity - your time. It is also the ultimate exercise of democracy. When you volunteer, you are, in fact, voting for the kind of community you want to live in. Your decision to volunteer at the Manitoba Theatre Centre is a vote for accessible live theatre of the highest quality. We are honoured by your faith and your passion; we simply could not exist without you.

MANITOBA THEATRE CENTRE | ANNUAL REPORT 2007/2008
MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER What a year! We planned some of the highlights of our 50th anniversary season: our new brand “Life Performed Live,” the gala opening of Our Town, the anniversary party in Ottawa during the National Arts Centre run of Shakespeare’s Dog, the Homecoming event in May, and the renaming of the Mainstage and Warehouse theatres after our founders John Hirsch and Tom Hendry. Other events resulted from months and years of preparation, but still surprised us when they finally bore fruit. We achieved our $10-million target for the endowment campaign, we played host to Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex at a special performance of The History of Manitoba from the Beginning of Time to the Present in 45 Minutes, and we sold a record number of subscriptions to the Mainstage and a record number of tickets for indoor performances at the Fringe Festival. For each success, we must thank our dedicated staff for their unwavering commitment to the theatre and to the 50th anniversary season despite the epic demands we made on their time and talents. Our thanks also to the Board of Trustees and all our volunteers for their dedication to this organization; the artists whose intelligence and passion enriched the lives of our patrons during the season (especially those artists, under the leadership of Richard Hurst, who showed their love and support for MTC at the Homecoming); and our patrons, donors and sponsors who continue to believe in MTC and the work we do.
GOVERNMENT SUPPORTERS
I want to thank James Richardson & Sons, in particular, for celebrating their 150th anniversary with a donation to help us produce Our Town, and the Canada Council for the Arts and the Winnipeg Arts Council for additional funding to produce Shakespeare’s Dog in Winnipeg and in Ottawa. I must also thank the ongoing generosity of the Government of Canada through the Canada Council for the Arts and the Department of Canadian Heritage; the Province of Manitoba through the Manitoba Arts Council and the Department of Culture, Heritage, Tourism and Sport; and the City of Winnipeg through the Winnipeg Arts Council, for making great theatre available to all our citizens. As you can see, this past season required a monumental effort from everyone, but no one worked harder than Endowment Campaign Co-Chairs Gail Asper and Maureen Watchorn, who worked with MTC’s Director of Endowment, Leona MacDonald, to bring the endowment campaign home. I cannot begin to thank them for their years of devoted service, and their continued support and love of live theatre and MTC. But enough looking back. We have a 51st theatre season ahead of us, and we promise it will be anything but anti-climactic.

GENERAL MANAGER
The Manitoba Theatre Centre operates as a non-profit charitable organization, led by the Artistic Director, General Manager, Board Chair and a volunteer Board of Trustees from the community. The management practices of MTC are based on five best practice principles: forward planning, accountability, monitoring, a sound control environment and ongoing liaison with the Board of Trustees. The Board’s input and agreement is sought regularly on the action plans developed by management. The success of MTC this season has been the result of the dedicated, enthusiastic, accountable and responsible governance by board and staff. An open Annual General Meeting was held August 12, 2008 to report artistic and financial results to interested subscribers, patrons and community members.

MANITOBA THEATRE CENTRE | ANNUAL REPORT 2007/2008
MESSAGE FROM MTC ARTISTIC DIRECTOR A Métis teacher told me recently about his vision quests in the wilderness, solitary journeys into the woods, where he fasts for days, and opens his heart to the mystic forces that animate the birch tree and the stream, the deer and the raven. He returns home from these quests feeling purified in body and soul, and filled with a renewed sense of purpose, as if the spirits have cleared a path for him into the future. I was intrigued by his tale, and learned that such vision quests have been shared by many cultures throughout history. Often, they are featured in initiation ceremonies for adolescent boys, as a way to help them determine their life’s work. My first thought was, “Man, I wish I’d had one of those when I was starting out.” My second thought was of my predecessor John Hirsch, and something I read during our 50th anniversary season. We all know by now that Hirsch was born in a small Hungarian town called Siofok, on Lake Balaton in 1930. When the Nazis moved in on their town, Hirsch’s parents sent their son away by himself, and he ended up in the overcrowded ghetto in Budapest, where his grandfather, his only living relative, starved to death. Of course, the Russians finally liberated the city, and the emaciated 15-year-old John started to walk home, as recounted in Harry Gutkin’s book, Journey into Our Heritage : “[I] nurtured this really insane kind of hope – insane because I knew that nobody was going to come back – that I would find my mother and my father, that everybody would be there. So I walked miles and miles, for weeks, following the Russians who were chasing the Germans out, and sleeping in the fields and in barns and in villages. And I began to live this crazy dream, some kind of vague unbelievable hope … that at home I
would find my mother, my father, my brother, and the whole family sitting under the trees as they did in the summer time, and we would all have dinner, and then I would go to sleep in my bed. Well, that never came. Finally, I came to the canal that had its mouth at the lake where my town was. I remember the tall grasses and the weeds. It was a lovely day.” Of course, all the members of Hirsch’s family had been killed, his home was unrecognizable, and he was set adrift in the world. That is what set Hirsch’s dreaming communion with nature apart from the vision quest. The Métis teacher always returns home at the end, and Hirsch no longer had a home. I have often wondered how John Hirsch became a young visionary, like a cultural prophet, what made him so special. Now I’ve been thinking that when he came to Canada, he finally came home from his own vision quest. In fact, in Manitoba, he found two homes – one personal with his beloved Shack family in Winnipeg’s north end, and one professional in the city’s burgeoning theatre community, which culminated in the creation of our theatre. Here he found his life’s work, and made his theatre into a waking dream in which we all - artists and audiences – can share. His most profound legacy may not be the institution or the building he helped create or even the memories we have of his seminal productions. No, we should remember him best for the flame he lit in our hearts, a flame that lives yet in the great artists who make the pilgrimage to our theatre, and in the audiences for whom our theatre became a kind of sacred path, leading us from our homes into a transcendent exploration of life’s core.

EXPANDING THE THEATRE EXPERIENCE CULTIVATING TALENT MTC cultivates talent through a series of programs. By inviting students to attend MTC performances on our stages and in their schools, we help them imagine a life in the theatre, both as artists and as audience members. MTC’s scholarship programs help bring those dreams within reach, while apprenticeships give artists the hands-on experience they need to bridge the gap between theory and practice. Traditionally, these apprenticeships have been in the areas of directing, design and stage management, but this year we also had apprentices in the shops where the company’s costumes and props are built. Apprentice Julia Piva (Wardrobe) was brought in at the very beginning of the season, while Samantha Harrison (Props) worked on The Importance of Being Earnest, Rope’s End, Fiddler on the Roof, Glengarry Glen Ross, The Syringa Tree and Shakespeare’s Dog. Harrison was overwhelmed by the generosity of her mentors. “The guys and Kari [Hagness, Head of Props] were totally open, asking me what I wanted to learn. At first, I assisted them with their projects but, as the season went on, they started giving me responsibility for my own projects.” Harrison made the fish for Fiddler, the tablecloths and cushion covers for Earnest, the leather bags and bottle covers for Shakespeare’s Dog, the café awning and rose bushes for Rope’s End, and the broken window glass for the post-break-in Glengarry Glen Ross. As a result of her time at MTC, Harrison will begin studies this fall in the production program at the National Theatre School in Montreal. MTC’s Fringe Festival also offers low-risk opportunities for artists to stretch themselves and to use our festival as a professional springboard. Rick Chafe made his playwriting debut at our very first Winnipeg Fringe Festival in 1988 with Player Pool, and this year made another MTC debut, on the Mainstage, with his adaptation of Leon Rooke’s novel Shakespeare’s Dog. MTC is proud to work with local artists and, this year, more than one-half of all actors at the Manitoba Theatre Centre were Manitobans. We are especially proud that Our Town featured a cast composed entirely of Manitobans, and that Shakespeare’s Dog boasted eight local actors (including Arne MacPherson as Shakespeare’s dog) in a cast of only 13. Without our artists, our theatre would not exist, and we are proud to play some small part in their creative evolutions.

FESTIVALS & NEW CREATIONS THE WINNIPEG FRINGE THEATRE FESTIVAL North America’s 2nd largest Fringe Festival celebrated a milestone anniversary from July 18 to 29, 2007. Winnipeg Fringe: 20 Years to Life welcomed 136 companies from around the world to present more than 1,000 performances to appreciative audiences. Paid attendance totalled 71,921, surpassing the previous year’s mark by 2,601. The Manitoba Theatre Centre is the only regional theatre in Canada to produce a Fringe Festival. For 20 years, the Winnipeg Fringe has been presented as part of MTC’s ongoing commitment to developing new artists and audiences for live theatre. Since companies are accepted to the festival through a non-juried lottery, artistic innovation is encouraged. The festival
is also an important springboard for local companies, many of whom present for the first time on a Fringe stage. The Winnipeg Fringe is MTC’s gift to the theatre community, since 100% of box office revenue is returned to the artists. In 2007, a total of $470,030 in box office revenue was returned to the performers.
2007 WINNIPEG FRINGE THEATRE FESTIVAL STATS: Paid Attendance: 71,921 Outdoor Stage attendance: 30,311 (including 19,620 at the Kids Fringe) Overall attendance: 102,232 Box office revenue: $470,030 (100% returned to artists) Number of performing companies: 136 Number of indoor performances: 1,153
MASTER PLAYWRIGHT FESTIVAL By offering a festival dedicated to the works of master playwrights, MTC provides artists and audiences with the opportunity to immerse themselves in the works of important, but rarely produced playwrights. The life and work of American playwright David Mamet took centre stage during the 8th annual Master Playwright Festival. At MametFest, independent companies partnered with the Manitoba Theatre Centre to present stage plays and films by one of the grittiest and most dynamic playwrights of the 20th century. Participating companies were Academy Productions, The Actors’ Fund of Canada, The Black Hole Theatre Company, The Cinematheque, Echo Theatre, Fancy Bred Theatre, The Incompletely Strangled Theatre Company,
Tara Players, Theatre Anywhere, Theatre Incarnate, Westwood Collegiate, WJT and Wooden Nickel Productions.
MAMETFEST STATS: Paid Attendance: 10,249 (including 5,154 at Glengarry Glen Ross) Lecture series attendance: 224 Overall festival attendance: 10,473 Overall festival box office revenue: $166,886 Number of performing companies: 14 Number of performances: 131
WORDPLAY This season, we delighted in seeing plays that started at MTC find warm receptions well beyond our theatre. Maureen Hunter’s Wild Mouth and Bruce McManus’s All Restaurant Fires Are Arson (both MTC commissions) had their respective world premieres at Tarragon Theatre in Toronto and Prairie Theatre Exchange in Winnipeg. In the meantime, Rick Miller and Daniel Brooks’ Bigger than Jesus (MTC Warehouse 2003), toured to three cities across North America, and Edinburgh, Scotland. Another MTC commission, Rick Chafe’s adaptation of Leon Rooke’s novel Shakespeare’s Dog, traveled to Ottawa after its Mainstage closing, for the final leg of the National Arts Centre coproduction. These new plays don’t just happen. Playwrights and their work must be nurtured. We commission new work (MTC has four plays in various
stages of development), we provide dramaturgical support, and we program readings and workshops. In our quest for new work to produce, we also accept 150 script submissions each year: plays both new and previously produced that are then read by MTC staff and freelance analysts. This year, we hired 55 artists to read six of the most promising scripts for MTC staff as part of our Wordplay reading series, including workshops of Rick Chafe’s Shakespeare’s Dog and Daniel ThauEleff’s Sailing Home (both MTC commissions). One play we first encountered in Wordplay readings was produced in MTC’s 07/08 season (Pamela Gien’s The Syringa Tree), while we have scheduled another one for the 08/09 season (Kevin Klassen’s Bleeding Hearts).

EDUCATION AND OUTREACH Enriching minds through the power of live theatre. The Manitoba Theatre Centre is committed to deepening our youth’s appreciation of theatre, developing future artists and enriching the theatre experience for audiences of all ages. MTC offers a number of special activities and events during the season as part of our education and outreach programing:
MONDAY MIX
THE 2007/08 LINE-UP: October 29: Rory Runnells, co-ordinator of the Manitoba Association of Playwrights (MAP), spoke about playwrights and playwriting in Manitoba.
Prior to showtime on the second Monday of each Mainstage production, patrons are invited to MTC’s Cargill Limited Board Room for an informal chat about theatre. These sessions aim to increase general theatre knowledge, provide a peek behind the scenes at MTC and illuminate the patrons’ upcoming theatre experience.
Dec 3: Tania Sigurdson, MTC’s Outreach Coordinator, gave a backstage tour to over 60 people. Following the tour, Lorraine O’Leary, MTC’s Head of Wardrobe, gave a presentation about costumes and design.
Monday Mix discussions have become popular pre-show events which were standing-roomonly last year, with approximately 100 patrons attending each session.

Donor benefits included special Artistic Director’s notes, get-togethers with actors and directors, and invitations to a volunteer reception and one-time special events. This past fall, Director’s Circle members mingled with the cast of Our Town at the Stobart/Rogers home and then met at the Mancini residence for a gathering with the Dreamgirls ensemble in the spring. Our corporate donors enjoyed a cocktail reception with guest speaker Doneta Brotchie. Many donors also participated in the wildly popular MTC Family Day.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT As the 2007/08 season came to a close on May 31, 2008, the moment was bittersweet. Although we miss the electric atmosphere of our 50th anniversary season, we look forward to the next chapter of MTC’s storied history. The Manitoba Theatre Centre wouldn’t exist were it not for the vision and perseverance of co-founders John Hirsch and Tom Hendry, but it has taken the faith and dedication of an entire community to make their dream a reality. For half a century, MTC has thrived thanks to the support of a community with the well-earned reputation of nurturing the arts, theatre in particular. This community of supporters reaches far beyond our city limits

Thank you to all three levels of government, corporations large and small, foundations and individuals, for contributing financially through your ongoing donations. And to our subscribers and attendees, thank you for filling our seats and playing a vital role in the magic of live theatre.
MTC’S ENDOWMENT FUND EXCEEDS $10 MILLION GOAL CELEBRATING THE PAST, STAGING THE FUTURE

as MTC productions often receive the warmest reception in the coldest climes. We thank all members of MTC’s extended family – audiences around the province, subscribers, donors and volunteers – for their commitment to live theatre. We would not have occasion to celebrate this milestone without their ongoing support.
The successful completion of MTC’s On with the Show Endowment Campaign was one of many milestones reached during our 50th anniversary season. From the $10.4 million raised to date, an estimated annual income of $500,000 from the Fund will allow MTC to sustain the programming excellence that audiences have come to expect from their theatre. As the Fund’s principal will never be touched, each donor’s gift ensures that future generations will enjoy the continued legacy of great theatre. Together, we have reached a remarkable milestone. Thank you to Campaign Co-chairs Gail Asper and Maureen Watchorn for their tremendous leadership. Many thanks also to Endowment volunteers and the Board of Trustees for their invaluable support of the campaign.

SPECIAL EVENTS BLACK & WHITE GALA BALL In addition to celebrating our 50th season and 20th edition of the Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival, the revelry continued on November 3, 2007 with the 25th anniversary of the Black & White Gala Ball at the Fort Garry Hotel. Guests were definitely up for celebrating as the event sold out well in advance, even after expanding to two rooms due to ticket demand. Set against the elegant backdrop of the historic hotel, guests enjoyed a five-course dinner, a spirited live auction and then danced the night away to the sounds of the Ron Paley Band and Papa Mambo. A special thank you to our guests, sponsors, volunteers and silent auction donors whose support and generosity made this year’s Black & White Gala one of the most successful to date.
