ON POINTE RWB’s Artistic Director André Lewis lets you in on a little secret Over the past number of months we’ve seen ballet images and themes come up in many areas of popular culture. I’m thinking of the movie Black Swan, with Natalie Portman as an obsessive, disturbed ballet dancer struggling with the demands of her lead role in Swan Lake. And there’s the Kanye West music video for Runaway, with its studio full of dancers in tutus engaged in movements both classical and modern. Even AT&T features in one of its commercials a young woman whose busy life of ballet rehearsals and performance seems to be intricately connected with her smart phone. Can we say that BALLET IS BACK? That it’s IN STYLE again? Well, here’s a little secret: BALLET NEVER LEFT.

While many might perceive that ballet is making a comeback or is showing a resurgence in popularity, there are those of us—who belong to ballet companies, who are students or teachers at ballet schools, and who regularly sit in performance halls as audience members—who know that this art form is timeless and evergreen. The beauty, grace, magic and intrigue of ballet are not fleeting or faddish. They are qualities that have charmed audiences from Russia to Rome for centuries—and in Winnipeg, Canada for 72 years. Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet has been carrying this secret around for the past seven decades. Just thought I’d let you in on it. So, don’t just jump on the ballet bandwagon. Why not be one of the thousands who appreciate the central role that ballet can and should play in our community. Subscribe now to an incredible season of dance in 2011 | 12 with Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet. And, let’s share our secret with others!

M

ark Godden’s choreographic genius brings us an explosive new look at the original master of mind control. RWB’s newest creation takes its inspiration from a film treatment born of the fevered imagination of international film sensation Guy Maddin.

Yearning for public recognition, Svengali escapes the repression of his mother’s ballet studio to a decadent world reminiscent of mid-century Weimar, where he finds the beautiful and malleable young dancer, Trilby. Under Svengali’s entrancing influence, Trilby is transformed into the darling of the ballet world, but her star ultimately rises beyond Svengali’s powerful emotional grasp. This complex psychological drama will unfold with riveting choreography by the creative powerhouse behind RWB’s Dracula, and shades of Maddinesque irreverence, as Svengali’s family secrets and sinister purposes are revealed.

You’ll be mesmerized!

L

ong considered one of the most w beautiful and haunting of all classical ballets, the full-length masterpiece Giselle returns after more than a decade’s absence. This timeless work will have a fresh face with elegant, lush new sets and costumes and RWB’s thrilling dance mastery. Set in the twilight spirit world of the Wilis, the German legend tells the story of a young peasant girl’s love for a nobleman and her ultimate betrayal at his hands. Giselle’s heartbreak and despair lead to her tragic demise, but she and the other jilted village girls seek their revenge from beyond the grave as irresistible spirits of a deathly dance.

“Joy, innocence, betrayal, death & salvation are conveyed in floating or vital images which are always BEAUTIFUL, & often tremulously fragile.” – the edmonton sun
