With our 2012/13 performance season, Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet celebrates the timeless power and romance of storytelling. This year, RWB presents four wonderful full-evening story ballets that the whole family will love. We are thrilled to open the season in October with the Canadian Premiere of our enchanting new creation The Princess & The Goblin (pages 6-7) by international dance legend Twyla Tharp. Tharp is one of the best-known and most commercially successful ballet choreographers in North America. She has chosen the RWB and partner company Atlanta Ballet to perform her groundbreaking new ballet. “Groundbreaking” because this is Tharp’s first time choreographing with children. She will be working with students of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School—an unprecedented opportunity for our young dancers!

The Princess & The Goblin is based on a Victorian fairy tale of the same name, penned by Scottish writer George MacDonald. Known for his ability to tell a riveting tale, MacDonald inspired other luminaries in the fantasy genre like J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. Twyla Tharp has taken his charming story as the inspiration for her choreography and has added the music of one of her favourite composers, Franz Schubert. The result is a ballet that we are sure you will find fascinating and fun!

This holiday season we bring you the magic of young Clara’s Christmas fantasy in Nutcracker (pages 8-9). In March the classic fairy tale The Sleeping Beauty will enchant audiences of all ages with its colourful cast of storybook characters (pages 10-11). The season closes with the most popular story ballet in RWB’s history, Moulin Rouge® – The Ballet (pages 12-13). Choreographed by RWB’s own Jorden Morris, the show has been seen by over 100,000 enthusiastic ballet-goers in more than 30 cities in North America. The story follows ingénue Nathalie to finde-siècle Paris to pursue a dance career, where she begins a fairy tale romance with Matthew that ultimately ends in heartbreak and tragedy. Fairy tales seem to have come back into fashion lately. Television series like Once Upon a Time and Grimm are drawing large viewing audiences with their fascinating tales of heroic characters and dark villains. This season, join us as the virtuosic RWB dancers bring epic stories to life on stage before your eyes. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 2012/13 is a fairy tale, family friendly season you won’t want to miss!

PRINCIPAL DANCER The freedom I feel by expressing love, hate, joy, anger, humour and despair by using only movement is completely addictive. It makes all the hours of rehearsal, painful injuries and repetition worth it. As a child I’d spend hours dancing in my living room to music that inspired me. It’s the same energy that fuels me to get up every day and strive to be an artist.
SOLOIST My storybook romance began when Carrie Broda and I went on vacation to Punta Cana. On a horseback riding tour, I had arranged to have my proposal written in a heart in the sand. We got off the horses and I got down on one knee and proposed. It was such an amazing moment of my life and she was so happy. I will never forget that feeling.
PRINCIPAL DANCER My job consists of living and breathing storybook romances and fairy tales on a daily basis. So when I come home at night I am pretty down to earth. I appreciate every moment on stage. The adrenalin rush is so incredible! Each time I am on stage I try to improve my performance and grow with my character, as I did in my recent role of Trilby in Svengali.

SOLOIST Every day I want to be bigger and better at my job. Each new show makes me try to reach new heights. Artistry is what makes people successful. You either have that or you don’t, and when you do, it’s something that you have to continue to work on. Some audience members care more about how I make them feel than about what I can do technically!
SOLOIST There is always “what if” in my head: “What if I try a bit harder than what I do now?” I might get better… tomorrow or one week later or one month later or a few years later. You never know when the result will come out. But, the idea of the “what if?” inspires me and makes me want to work.
PRINCIPAL DANCER Growing up, I would always watch the Disney version of the fairy tale Cinderella. To this day, I can still recite every word from the movie. I was always attracted to what I believed was the moral of the story: “Beauty is a treasure, but graciousness is priceless. Without it, nothing is possible. With it, one can do anything.” These are words that I live by.

“ENCHANTING & FUNNY… a powerful image of love. [Tharp] has succeeded here where so many have failed... a children’s ballet tightly woven with movement motifs and layered with symbolic meanings that adults can appreciate.” — NEW YORK TIMES, 2012
Tharp has choreographed more than 135 dances for companies from the Paris Opera Ballet to Hubbard Street Dance Chicago; has collaborated on five Hollywood movies (Hair, Ragtime, Amadeus, White Nights and I’ll Do Anything); co-directed and won two Emmy Awards for the TV special Baryshnikov by Tharp; and written three books. Tharp’s dance musical Movin’ Out, set to the music of Billy Joel, ran for over 1,300 performances on Broadway and won her a Tony Award for Best Choreographer. Most recently, Come Fly Away/ Sinatra: Dance With Me, set to the songs of Frank Sinatra, played on stages on Broadway and in Las Vegas.

Over her long and illustrious career, Twyla Tharp has brought ballet into the popular imagination the world over and her work has irrevocably changed the face of modern dance. Tharp’s defining new ballet is an adaptation of a fairy tale by Victorian fantasy novelist George MacDonald, who is credited with inspiring authors W.H. Auden, J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. The story follows young Princess Irene on a courageous quest to the underworld as she discovers the town’s children being kidnapped by The Goblin. Guided by her Great-Great-Grandmother, the heroine rescues the children against the odds in a transformative and inspiring story of humility and forgiveness.

Set in a stately home on Winnipeg’s Wellington Crescent, Nutcracker features endearing Canadian scenes like a snowy pond hockey game and a battle on Parliament Hill. What could be more fun for the family than to join young Clara’s Christmas fantasy, where toys come to life, the Sugar Plum Fairy spreads her magic and a mischievous bear steals the Christmas pudding. Jorden Morris developed his choreographic chops at RWB. A graduate of the RWB School, Jorden rose through the ranks to a successful career as Principal Dancer. Retiring from the stage, Morris turned to choreography, and his artistic talent has fueled some of RWB’s most popular ballets, including Peter Pan (2006) and Moulin Rouge® - The Ballet (2009). In 2003, Jorden starred in the children’s TV series The Toy Castle and transformed it into an interactive live dance performance that earned a Genie Award nomination. He has created dance pieces for the visit of Queen Elizabeth II to Winnipeg in 2000 and for the national Genie Awards broadcast in 2011. Last season Jorden premiered The Doorway, a series of poignant dance vignettes set to the poems and music of Leonard Cohen.

Since its World Premiere in 2009, Moulin Rouge® – The Ballet has been seen by over 100,000 people in more than 30 cities across North America, bringing cheering audiences to their feet wherever it tours! Featuring French period music and high-kicking choreography, the ballet follows two innocents drawn to fin-de-siècle Paris in search of romance and stardom. Their passion ignites a powder keg of emotion and ultimate heartbreak in that most glittery and infamous of cabarets — the Moulin Rouge.
