DEFENDING OUR PLANT EVERYWHERE
IgadI, a large-scale marijuana operation engaged in all aspects of cannabis cultivation, manufacturing, and retail sales, opened its doors in May 2015, and they are quickly setting the gold standard for the nascent cannabis industry.
Yep, that’s right. It’s even written into the name of the mountain. What you’re looking at is the Mary Jane side of Winter Park and Mary Jane Ski Resort in Winter Park, Colorado. Widely regarded as home to the state’s finest moguls and tree skiing, there is a popular refrain heard around here that captures the deutoronomic pride taken in such a designation: “Don’t Groom Mary Jane” – God.
The world class bumps and dashing tree runs are just a few of the many attractions enjoyed at the resort. Skiers and riders also relish in over 3,000 acres of skiable terrain, 29 feet of average annual snowfall, two award-winning terrain parks, and seven distinct mountain territories to explore—all with the convenience of being Denver’s closest major ski resort. Winter Park is coming off a historic year in 2014-2015, where it celebrated 75 years of downhill operations. Nestled alongside the mighty continental divide, Winter Park has served for over three quarters of a century as Denver’s “home mountain”. Now, in its 76th year, visitors to this Fraser Valley getaway have one more remarkable attraction to escape to…
IgadI, which means “we make a garden” in a South African dialect, has taken the popular brewery tour concept for beer and applied it to the brave new world of legal marijuana. By doing so, IgadI is providing its customers with the groundbreaking service of unveiling the science and methods behind cultivating, extracting and infusing choice quality marijuana. “Consumers in this industry deserve to be properly informed,” says General Manager Kemsley Wilton, “and at IgadI we believe in total transparency from seed to sale.” So what exactly will you find when you visit IgadI? Let’s take the tour… Stepping through the front doors into the lobby you are surrounded by a mountain rustic interior that cozily compliments your view of the sharp greens and clean white of the clone and vegetative rooms. Through the first of three large windows, watch as up to one thousand fresh clones are clipped from young plants, mixed with nutrient solution, and begin to form root balls as they incubate before vegetation.
The next two windows in the lobby peer into one of the vegetative grow rooms. This second stage of the cultivation process boasts thirty-two 600 watt lights transmitting photo energy into young cannabis plants to ensure their healthy and verdant adolescence. Observe as the plants grow up to four feet tall, expand their roots, and gather up nutrients for the upcoming eight-to-nine week flowering stage. Be sure to also check out the touchscreen monitors that will be available at each stage of the process to help explain the science and technology behind what you’re seeing. Continue strolling to your right and just off the lobby is the observation room—the crown jewel. Here you will find awing views into the main garden where hundreds of cannabis plants in full flower stretch skyward under a series of gleaming, high-tech lighting structures. Watch through three large windows as professional growers work inside this 1,600 square foot main garden. What you won’t see, is IgadI’s HVAC system, which was awarded the prestigious 2014 DataAire global HVAC project of the year award, edging out the new world trade center, among others, for the honor. We are ready now to enter the retail store. Shelves upon shelves of Colorado crafted beetle-kill pine house an impressive collection of marijuana, infused products, paraphernalia and apparel. Knowledgeable budtenders will answer all your questions about IgadI’s dozens of homegrown strains. And that’s not all…you will also have the savory opportunity to gaze into the industrial kitchen where IgadI cana-chefs bake and infuse cookies, pastries, candies and more with house-made THC oils, butters and concentrates. We recommend taking an après ski tour of the facility, then capping it off with a delectable white chocolate macadamia nut infused cookie! Or even better, pick up the cookie-dough version to bake when you get back to the lodge!
IGADI
In addition to providing the most unique and educational retail marijuana experience in America, the IgadI model is here to build an international brand, expanding operations throughout their eleven acre property and beyond, and providing the finest quality products to the wholesale market throughout the country and around the globe. As the laws in America and worldwide continue their trend toward legalization, expect IgadI to be at the forefront of this ‘budding’ industry. By: Arthur Vandalay

HARACTERIZED AS
an “adrenaline addled, yuppie utopia” by Lonely Planet, Vail is a highly pedestrian ski village with a small-town feel. Located about 100 miles west of Denver, Vail offers exceptional cultural activities for every visitor, whether you’re looking for something to do apres-ski, or just sansski. Vail is the third-largest ski mountain in North America and offers cultural events and activities throughout the year. The Vail Film Festival offers film screenings, panel discussions, live music, and galas, while drawing in hundreds of filmmakers, thousands of attendees, and lots of celebrities every year (late-March to early-April). In addition, the Taste of Vail occurs

around the same time, featuring dishes and wine pairings from the best restaurants in the area—and that’s saying something, because Vail is the ski town where the most award-winning chefs choose to hang their aprons. Tickets are between $75 and $175, but if you’d rather not wait or you just don’t want to shell out the cash, they’ve generously shared the recipes of several popular dishes on their website (tasteofvail. com). Notoriety doesn’t come cheap: Vail is also one of the most expensive ski towns to stay and play in: a daily lift ticket will set you back about $100 if you buy online (that’s the discount price), and good luck finding a place for under $250—although you may be able to find some barebones accommodations on Airbnb for under $100 a

night. Even your apres-ski cannabis will be a bit pricier at the local dispensaries than the rest of Colorado. Speaking of apres-ski fun: there are a few places to purchase recreational cannabis in the area, but they’re a short drive from the action in Vail. Eagle-Vail and Avon, both 10 minutes away on I-70, are home to Roots Rx, Herbal Elements, Rocky Road Remedies, and Native Roots, where you can find Granddaddy Purple, featured on page 10 of DOPE’s holiday issue. More local to the mountain are several bars, including a few of the “dive” variety: Bart and Yeti’s is the oldest in town, while Garfinkel’s, Samana Lounge, Altitude Bar (aka The Dude), and Red Lion are also great options.

west of Denver, Summit County is home to some of Colorado’s most loved ski resorts: Breckenridge and Keystone. To get the most of your time and money while you’re there, save some dough and stick to the slopes at Keystone, which will cost you $70 a day if you buy in advance online (compared to Breck’s discounted advance price of $86 a day). Plus, Keystone has the largest night skiing operation in Colorado. While Vail is a yuppie utopia, Keystone is better for families. It offers a plethora of activities for kids and kids at heart, including sleigh rides, ice skating, snow tubing, and the Kidtopia Snow Fort, which could either be awesome or terrifying. Tons of family events are offered as well, like Thanksgiving dinners, the Welcome Winter Family Carnival, and an opportunity to meet Santa during his busiest time of year. There’s also a wine tasting event for

couples around Valentine’s Day, so just drop your kids off in the snow fort for a few hours and enjoy the fruits of the vine. The kids will be fine, probably. Perhaps you’re more into partaking than imbibing: your best bet for nearby recreational dispensaries is in Silverthorne, where you’ll find High Country Healing’s flagship store. Other options are all in nearby Breckenridge, worth visiting for a day to ski anyway, or even an evening to just stroll around the town. Take your pick from Breckenridge Cannabis Club, Organix, Alpenglow Botanicals, and Breckenridge Organic Therapy: all 20 minutes from Silverthorne or 35 minutes from Keystone. Once you’re starving after a day of either dominating the slopes or falling on your face a few times and ingesting some legal bud in whatever way suits your fancy, you’ll want to get some grub. Keystone offers the typical ski town cuisine of warm and hearty meals, but if you’re looking

for something a little more adventurous, try Alpenglow Stube, “the highest AAA Four-Diamond dining experience in North America.” It’s not a cheap meal, but it offers excellent food and amazing views. Imagine smoking before taking two gondolas up to the mountain peak at over 11,000 feet and eating what looks like Southern-inspired high-brow comfort food while overlooking the valley below. It can’t get much better than that. If you’re looking to get the most out of your ski trip (and don’t happen to have any children with you), consider staying at the Bud + Breakfast at Mountain Vista, which offers a wake-and-bake cannabis sampler, a daily happy hour (featuring an open bar, cannabis treats, and appetizers at 4:20), and cookies and milk every night along with—you guessed it—cannabis. If you want to save on normal, not-as-friendly housing, you can book in advance through the resort website (keystoneresort.com) and save 30%.

BRECKENRIDGE
B
EFORE IT was a famous ski destination, Breckenridge, then spelled Breckinridge, was a tiny village without a post office. Along with many other Colorado townships, Breckenridge was incorporated during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush in 1859. Back then, the western half of Colorado was mostly open frontier: no post offices existed between the Continental Divide and Salt Lake City. Hoping to flatter the federal government into ponying up a mail service, town founder General George E. Spencer decided to name his new settlement after John C. Breckinridge, the 14th Vice President of the United States. The plan worked, and soon Breckenridge was home to the region’s first post office. Now, the original Breckenridge settlers were gold miners, a hardened bunch that

firmly supported the union. Thus, they felt betrayed when, after the Civil War broke out in 1861, former Vice President Breckinridge sided with the confederacy. In an effort to voice their displeasure, the townspeople decided to change the first “i” Breckinridge to an “e.” How devious! Breckenridge may have been built on the backs of vengeful gold miners, but it now thrives, thanks to one of Colorado’s most valuable resources: powder. The Breckenridge Ski Resort spans 187 runs spread over five distinct peaks, the tallest of which tops out at 13,000 feet above sea level. Peaks 6, 8, and 9 boast a handful of thrilling black diamonds, and the Four O’Clock run, the longest of all, stretches over 3.5 miles on peak 8. Fortunately, Breckenridge doesn’t turn into a ghost town during the offseason. ATVing is a hugely popular pastime in the Rockies, and the area is filled with all-ter-

rain opportunities, such as the Golden Horseshoe Trail System, Boreas Pass, and Humbug Hill. If careening down mountains isn’t your thing, there’s plenty of fly-fishing, whitewater rafting, and alpine sliding to go around. All this physical activity can leave visitors parched and hungry, so consider loading up on carbs at Giampietro, a renowned pizzeria, and sampling some of the Rockies’ finest brews at the Dillon Dam Brewery. The Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory is a must for anyone with a sweet tooth, and you won’t find a cozier brunch experience than at the Amazing Grace Café and Coffee House. No matter how you spell it, Breckenridge will satisfy any thrill seeker, beer buff, or nature enthusiast that stops by for a visit, so make sure to mark it on your map.

out from the crowd in terms of what this ski town has to offer. Lonely Planet describes it as an “athletic, cultural, intellectual, artistic, absurd ski town” and calls it a place of “excellence, extravagance, and, most of all, indulgence.” There is certainly something here for everyone’s taste, whether you’re looking for a romantic ski weekend (try the Snowcat Dinner, featuring panoramic views paired with Swiss and continental cuisines for $140), a fun family getaway (make sure you’re there on a Friday for Ullr Nights to celebrate the Norse god of snow with some tubing and s’mores), or

an exciting trip with your friends (where you can fuel your sense of adventure by watching the pros at the 2016 X Games). Aspen is perhaps the easiest out of this group for out-of-staters to get to, with the Aspen/Pitkin County Airport minutes away from the resort. If you can get a flight from one of the eight major cities that fly to Aspen, it’ll be a much easier trip than driving three hours from Denver. Unlike the other ski towns on this list, Aspen caters heavily to the recreational marijuana industry. You can walk to the stores in Aspen (Silverpeak, Native Roots, Aspen Green Dragon, and LEAF Aspen), while Stash is a few minutes’ drive away on highway 82. While Aspen definitely caters to the

wealthy, that doesn’t mean you have to have a lot of dough to have a great time (though it would certainly help). Lift tickets for adults are $139, both in advance and day-of. You can save up to $70 by buying a multi-day pass in advance, and you can save 25% if you purchase tickets for the beginning or end of the season in advance. As with all things, a little planning goes a long way. You can treat yourself to a stay at the luxurious St. Regis ($369 a night), or you can go for cheaper if you scout Airbnb. You can also save by planning your trip on the edge of the ski season, either when the pow-pow is super fresh, or when it’s just about the melt away—just don’t wait too long!
