01 Virtual Places: Common Belt Virtual Reality | Urban Design This studio project is a research on the application of virtual reality in urban design. In view of the lack of pedestrian-friendly urban walkways and inadequate community facilities around the site, this project proposes a community-oriented arcade to reconnect the residential neighborhood to the economic center in Flushing.
The project uses Unreal Engine to explore the potentials of virtual sketching tools such as Tiltbrushand Gravity Sketch. The studio became particularly challenging as our team transitioned into remote learning due to the pandemic. To continue the exploration on virtual reality design without the technical support on campus, we explored another user-friendly virtual reality software, Twinmotion, to develop virtual vignettes of the arcade. The project speculates on how virtual reality can become more than a design evaluation tool and further develop into a 3D in-situ modelling tool kit.

02 New Piazza di San Francesco Public Space | Historical Revitalization
Located on the hilltop of the birthplace of St. Francesco, Piazza di San Francesco is on the way to the pilgrimage cathedral of Basilica di San Francesco. Yet, the basilica and the piazza have slowly dwindled and vacant over recent years. The goal of this project proposal is to reconnect the basilica to the city by activating the piazza. It reimagines the contemporary relation between the city and the basilica. The original axis of the piazza is redirected sideways to encourage users to explore the surrounding arcades and the views into the valley. The geometric mosaic is inspired by local artist and made of local stones. The pattern encourages exciting and new ways to occupy the piazza for daily use.

03 Bricking! DOUBLING EXISTING STRUCTURE
Intergraded Building Design BRICKING! reimagines the afterlife of an abandoned industrial GREEN CAFE TEST LAB building as a sustainable brick research center. The rapid urbanization of rural Mainland China often leaves the existing buildings to be demolished. We believe that the revitalization of existing buildings is one of the most determining sustainable urban practices for a sustainable future in China. L
BRICK VAULTS
The concrete frame of the existing building is doubled and the middle portions of the floor plates are hollowed out. Inspired by traditional Chinese Courtyard Houses, we insert brick half-vaults to EXHIBITION SPACE envelop the public GIFTSHOP core in the hollowed volume to create a vertical courtyard within the building volume. The brick vaults continue to carve, corrode and finally break out of the building to an occupiable landscape that seduces the pedestrians to venture into the building.

04 Political Archipelago
Repoliticizing Post-Umbrella Revolution Hong Kong Undergraduate Thesis |Political Urbanism The Political Archipelago is a provocation of permanently temporal resistance to the city. This resistance anticipates its certain erasure, and evolves from its remnants. This research project analyzes how public space can evolve from the remnants of democratic struggles in post-Umbrella Revolution Hong Kong. In 2014, the civil disobedient occupy movement temporarily resisted the logic of the city to create spaces of exception. However, these temporary alterations did not leave significant permanent imprints or institutional changes to the city. In this project proposal, there are four “islands of exceptions in Hong Kong. They were previous occupied sites during the Umbrella Revolution. Each island is a unique fragment of the previous alternative democratic sphere. This project proposes various operations of tracing to turn these intangible fragments into persistent tools for political change. 05 Que Cerรก Material Research | Ceramics Que Cerรก is a research project on ceramics engineering and its application on building technology. This research proposes a ceramic engineering catalog that can be modified for many building applications. Our research team started by investigating the science behind clay. It is the raw material that can be transformed into terracotta, porcelain and other ceramic products. By collecting data from various research papers, we learned that the mineral composition of clay determines its chemical and physical properties. There are also organic and inorganic additives that can be added at different stages of the fabrication process to further alter the properties of clay. These scientific findings are compiled into a circular matrix that assists our design process of the ceramic building module. In addition to our material research, we also proposed a compact machine, Cerรกbot, to create these ceramic modules. With a robotic arm, Cerabot can carve geometrically complex ceramic building modules that can be aggregated quickly without the use of mortar. 06 Nestling Reversal Glass and Ceramics | Cultural Production This project approaches glass and ceramic as formal misfits. This is inspired by the parasitic and symbiotic relationship of oropendola and cowbird. Cowbird does not raise its nestlings; it lay their eggs in the woven basket nests of oropendola. This project explores the formal evolution and dialogue between glass and ceramics. With the general support from Corning Museum of Glass, the studio designed and fabricated glass faรงade modules using a transformable CNC-milled wood mold. The glass modules are 3D-scanned for fabricating the slip cast molds for ceramic modules. The mockup of the glass-ceramic faรงade proposal are exhibited in Mui Ho Fine Art Library in Cornell University at the end of the semester.
