City map Dordrecht

Welcome to Dordrecht!

With more than a thousand listed monuments, a vibrant city centre, picturesque streets, historic harbours and Biesbosch National Park, Dordrecht has a lot to offer!

Dordrecht is a city of water, history and culture. It embraces its rich history as a flourishing trading hub that laid the foundations for the Kingdom of the Netherlands. That history is still palpable today in the many monuments. Strolling through the city is a great way to take in the sights and sounds. In addition to being steeped in history, Dordrecht was shaped by the water that surrounds it. The many battles against the water gave the city (where three rivers converge) its unique character, its impressive harbours and a unique nature reserve. Discover the oldest city in South-Holland and soak up the atmosphere of a place that continues to make history.

Drinks and bites

When it comes to culinary delights, Dordrecht has plenty to offer. Scheffersplein is the heart of the restaurant district. Enjoy a drink and a bite to eat as you soak up the sun from early spring to late autumn. If you prefer a spot along the water, Groothoofd offers a stunning view of the Drierivierenpunt, the busiest sailing hub in Europe. Be sure to stroll down to the historic harbours and the little side streets, where you’ll find quaint cafes, bustling lunch spots, great restaurants and wine bars and hidden terraces and courtyards.

Exploring the city by bike and on foot

Dordrecht boasts stunning monuments, a historic city centre and wide variety of unique shops. As an island city, Dordrecht is best explored on foot. The most popular route is the Rondje Dordt, which takes you past the most beautiful places in the historic centre. Along the way you can visit a museum, go shopping or enjoy a coffee on a terrace. More walking routes can be found at the VVV tourist office (Spuiboulevard 99). For a faster tour of the historic city centre or the island, rent a bicycle or e-bike at the VVV. From the centre, it will take you about 30 minutes to cycle to Biesbosch National Park where you can enjoy the unique nature, the water and tranquility. The tourist office has a wide selection of cycling routes to help you discover Dordrecht at your own pace. If you can’t wait to get planning, check the available routes on indordrecht.nl/en.

Shopping: from local boutiques to major fashion brands

The combination of local shops and well-known chain stores makes shopping in Dordrecht a lot of fun. The weekly market on Fridays and Saturdays transforms the city centre into a bustling shopping hub. Shops are open every day of the week. On Thursdays the shops have extra late opening hours and on Sundays they open arount noon. If you’re looking for vintage or antiques, a special art tour (Kunstrondje Dordt) is organised every first Sunday of the month. It’s the perfect place to look for that exclusive book or to browse through endless curiosities. For those who love to shop, Dordrecht is the ideal city!

Culture hopping

When it comes to culture, Dordrecht has plenty to offer. Energiehuis is the place to be for performing arts and a popular venue for Dutch artists (for example at Poppodium Bibelot). The unique Schouwburg Kunstmin, which hosts a wide variety of theatre shows, is also worth a visit. With fascinating permanent and temporary collections, museums like Hof van Nederland, Dordrechts Museum, Nationaal Onderwijsmuseum, Huis van Gijn and Dordts Patriciërshuis contribute to the city’s cultural intrigue. The Kunstkerk is also a must-see. The facade alone makes it worth the trip!

A fun night out

Nothing beats a night out with friends in a city like Dordrecht. Check out the latest films at Kinepolis or De Witt, see your favourite band at Bibelot, treat yourself to a theatrical performance at Schouwburg Kunstmin or dance the night away in one of the many bars. The choice is yours! You can also spend the evening wining and dining at DOK Bar & Bites, find a spot in the cosy courtyard of Het Magazijn or order a glass of bubbly at Brut. Whatever you choose, you’re sure to have fun!

Discover all the highlights

With more than a thousand monuments in the city centre, there’s history at every turn. The city boasts a wide range of buildings in different architectural styles, from gothic to Jugendstil. The most striking building is the Grote Kerk. Climb the church tower’s 275 steps to be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the city. Other noteworthy buildings and hotspots are the City Hall, Het Hof, the Groothoofdspoort (citygate) and the many monuments you’ll encounter along the way.

Also not to be missed are the historic harbours. If you walk along the inland harbours, street names like Wijnhaven and Appelsteiger hint at the goods that were traded here. Today, the harbours largely serve as marinas, but the historic atmosphere is still palpable. These are the most photo-worthy spots in the city. Standing on the Roobrug, point your camera towards Dok Straatman with its stately warehouses and the Damiatebrug in the background. Turn the other way for a stunning shot of the Nieuwe Haven, with the Lange Ijzeren Brug and the Grote Kerk as your backdrop.

Dordrecht from the water

If you’d like to explore Dordrecht from a different angle, head out onto the water! The city centre is criss-crossed with historic harbours and the Biesbosch National Park is just a stone’s throw away. Dordrecht is even more beautiful from the water and there are many ways to experience this. The many tour boats operate from spring to autumn. An electric tour boat (Dordtevaar), Italian boats (Si Barone) and sloops (DRIJF) all depart from the Wijnbrug bridge. The tour boats sail through the historic harbours and past spots that are not accessible on foot. Interested? For more information visit indordrecht.nl/en.

Nature nearby

As one of the few freshwater tidal wetlands in Europe, the Biesbosch National Park offers a unique nature experience. This adventurous labyrinth of rivers, water basins and willow groves is just five kilometres from the city centre of Dordrecht. Discover this unspoilt nature reserve by electric boat, canoe, paddleboard or on foot. Enjoy birdwatching, fishing or beaverspotting!

For even more nature, the Nieuwe Dordtse Biesbosch and the adjacent nature reserve De Elzen is just six kilometres away from the city centre. This diverse nature and recreation area is ideal for walking and cycling and boasts a gorgeous wooden footpath. It’s also a fantastic birdwatching area as it’s the ideal staging area for waders and other migratory birds.

Out and about with the kids

If you’re travelling with kids, you won’t want to miss the forest playground in De Elzen. They’ll love climbing and clambering over the hills and playing with the water pump. For more kid-friendly tips in Dordrecht, visit indordrecht.nl/en.

Events in the city

There’s always something to do in Dordrecht. Events are organised all year round for people of all ages. In fact, Dordrecht has been named event city of the year several times already! Want to know what’s on offer? Check the UITagenda for details: indordrecht.nl/en.

Can’t fit it all into one day?

If you’re not ready to head home yet, we totally understand! There are lots of great hotels and B&Bs in Dordrecht. Book a room in Stadshotel Steegoversloot or Villa Augustus in the historic city centre, or in one of the cosy B&Bs along the water. You could also venture outside the city centre and book a floating ecolodge or a Stayokay Wikkelhouse in the Biesbosch National Park. These tiny houses made entirely from recycled cardboard are an ideal (and sustainable) getaway for nature-lovers. Visit indordrecht.nl/en for a detailed overview of all accommodation options.

How do you get to Dordrecht?

Dordrecht is easily accessible by car, train, bus and bicycle. The city is located near the highway A16 between Rotterdam and Breda and can also be reached by the highway A15. The historic city centre is just a ten-minute walk from the central station and the many car parks. You can park for free at the Weeskinderendijk at the edge of the city centre (for 24 hours).

Dordrecht also has a water taxi (Waterbus), which will take you from the city centre past the most beautiful sites, such as the Biesbosch National Park, Kinderdijk World Heritage and Rotterdam. You can quickly and comfortable sail anywhere in the region (and you can even take your bike for free). For more information about travelling in Dordrecht, visit indordrecht.nl/en.
