Italy has a unique food heritage. Italian food is recognized all over the world as an unquestioned excellence. The number of Italian food producers is huge. However we must remember that most of these producers, even though top-quality, are small-sized or without the structures needed to face international markets.

When dealing with this wide range and variety of producers, international buyers are often bewildered and have few tools to define the most suitable solutions for their national markets. On the one hand there is a great potential, but on the other hand, there is also an objective difficulty that is intrinsic to the sector and that obstacles the development of the Made in Italy on international markets. Coop Italian Food was created to face this problem.

Coop Italian Food makes available to international players the expertise gained through its over 150 years of partnership with Italian food producers.

Today 500 companies produce around 4,000 food products for Coop.

These producers are carefully selected by Coop through strict controls and have to comply with specific production processes. Existing suppliers are periodically checked by Coop inspectors and hundreds of new ones are identified and examined by the monitoring system.

History of Coop!

born before the Italian State. The history of Coop is intertwined with the history of Italy. The first consumers’ cooperative was born in 1854 in Turin, with the inauguration of the “Magazzino di previdenza”, 7 years before the Unification of Italy.

From the very beginning the goal of the cooperative was to buy wholesale and resell consumer staples at cost price to members, in order to protect consumers’ purchasing power. Coop Italia, the national purchasing Central, was created in 1967, in order to maximize the contractual capacity of Italian consumers’ cooperatives towards the suppliers.
