InFlight Traveller magazine started in 2002, mainly a print publication, but this year we’re diving right into digital with the launch of our magazine on the www. issuu.com platform, the beginning of a new era for us.

THE 37-ROOM LAGÙN Hotel, facing Bacuit Bay, opened in 2018 in the increasingly popular beach town of El Nido, the jumpoff point to 45 islands and islets in the beautiful Bacuit Bay archipelago.

Set in the heart of town, Lagùn is an ideal location for those seeking modern amenities and a convenient location for island hopping trips, nightlife on the island, and varied choices of restaurants and bars — all just a few minutes’ walk away.

Hotel owner Richmond Bicol said that back in 2013 when he first thought of opening a hotel, the choices in town were either to go for a small, basic inn or break the bank with a luxury stay. There was nothing in between. “We thought that if we were looking for something better than basic that is also affordable, then tourists must feel the same way,” Richmond said.

Lagùn Hotel proved an attractive option. “Prepandemic, some 95% of our guests were foreign tourists, mainly from Europe and the US,” he said. These days, it’s mainly Filipino travelers.

Like the majority of hotels in El Nido, Lagùn closed its doors for two years during the pandemic and reopened in March this year, following the reopening of Philippine tourism. It’s been a slow, but steady recovery for the destination.

TripAdvisor ranks Lagùn as one of its best valuefor money-resorts in El Nido. The draws are its great

location and its rooftop infinity pool with a view of El Nido’s iconic limestone karst, or taraw as the locals call it, cliffs.

From affordable deluxe rooms to premier lofts

The design of the hotel is inspired by local weaving and basketry patterns, as well as the nests of swiftlets, which are indigenous to El Nido. This can be seen in the hallways and the spacious and well-appointed and individually-designed rooms. The best room in the house is the Premier room with a balcony facing the cliffs. There’s the Fiesta Room with its bold patterns; the soothing underwater tones of the Coral Room; and the tropical hues of the Peacock Room, bright like the animal it’s named after.

Rooms have airconditioning, fan, cable TV, and Wi-fi. There are 20 deluxe rooms, two deluxe lofts, one premier room, 10 premier rooms with balcony, two premier lofts and two premier suites. The premier lofts are most spacious at about 42 sqm, with deluxe the smallest at 26 sqm but still a good size.

The five-storey Lagùn has an airconditioned restaurant on the upper ground level, an infinity pool and bar on the rooftop, a spa room, and a multi-function room that can accommodate up to 30. There is a spa room, but an in-room spa service is also available upon request.

What’s on the menu?

Habi, which means to weave, is Lagùn’s in-house restaurant, and is on the first floor. Try delicious native Filipino dishes, from crispy pata (pig’s knuckle), kaldereta (a popular local stew), and sizzling sisig — a tasty mixture of tender meat from a pig’s face and belly with chicken liver, all seasoned with calamansi, onions, and chili peppers. The sisig , cooked by the chef in front of you and served sizzling hot, is a bestseller.

Don’t miss the stone-baked Bulgogi pizza, a Koreaninspired pizza loaded with colorful vegetables. Fish sinigang is a delivious Filipino sour and savory soup with coconut and lemongrass.

Fruit shakes are a favorite. Choose from mango shake, watermelon and fresh buko (coconut). All the ingredients are sourced from El Nido and nearby Puerto Princesa.

Lunch and dinner with soup, a main course, and dessert start from a good-value Php700.

What’s on the doorstep?

Lagùn faces Bacuit Bay, putting it right at the heart of things when it comes to discovering El Nido town and exploring the islands and outlets of the archipelago.

From the hotel, turn left to get to public market and transport links. Corong Corong is also the best place

to view El Nido’s memorable sunsets, as well somewhere to hang out with a sundowner and dinner at its bars and restaurants.

Turn right to get to the local shops, restaurants, and bars. Outside the hotel are motorbikes and tricycles to get you to various tourist sites in town, so if you don’t feel like walking you don’t have to.

The beach at Bacuit Bay is a seven-minute walk. Nagkalit-Kalit Waterfalls is 20 minutes away, and the “canopy walk” from atop the limestone cliffs is three minutes away. Along the beach you won’t lack for boat and bike rentals. It’s best to get your hotel to recommend for boat rentals and tour operators before setting off. If you intend to go on an El Nido Boat

Tour (a group tour starts from P1,200 per person) with stops at Small Lagoon or Big Lagoon, Secret Lagoon, Cudugnon Cave and Snake Island (where you can buy fresh coconut), wake up early and aim to get to your first stop at 7am, before the day’s main groups descend. There is ample parking space at Lagùn for guests coming by car from Puerto Princesa. Some fly from Manila to Puerto Princesa — it’s generally cheaper than flying direct from Manila to El Nido — and rent a car

for the four-hour drive. Airconditioned vans or buses take about six hours.

Travel north of El Nido and explore the virgin beaches few tourists see. The 2-km-long Duli Beach (www.dulibeach.com), to the northwest of El Nido town, is known for its surfing and laidback charm. To the northeast, in an area called Linapacan, there are beaches and islands that are off the beaten track see few visitors.

Bicol and his staff at Lagùn can offer advice and help with reservations. Stay for a week or two and you’ll have enough time to fall in love with El Nido — and discover the tropical islands and beaches around it that people rarely see.

How much?

From September to December 15, 2022, the hotel is offering a 30% discount off rack rates. Discounted rates start from Php5,600 a night with breakfast and airport transfer from Lio Airport. El Nido in northern Palawan, about an hour’s flight from Manila, is the gateway to the Bacuit Archipelago, with its stunning beaches, virgin islands and limestone cliffs. Bacuit has some 45 limestone islands and islets, and the clearest waters this side of the planet.

O1 ISLAND HOP AROUND BACUIT BAY

EL NIDO is no longer an under-the-radar destination, with about 160,000 tourists visiting each year. Thankfully, with close to 50 islands to explore, you can still find plenty of uninhabited islands to play Robinson Crusoe on, or have a picnic lunch between island-hopping tours. Tours with a group cost as little as P1,200 per person (about US$18.81). Most tours start at 9AM and takes about eight hours, covering some 5-8 stops, depending on how long you’d like to linger in one spot. If budget allows, go for a private tour, so you could depart El Nido town earlier and get to the prime spots like the Small Lagoon and Big Lagoon by 7am, before the crowd descends on you. It is well worth getting up early for.

Small Lagoon and Big Lagoon on Miniloc Island are two spots you won’t want to miss. They’re spectacular and almost ringed-in by towering, mystical limestone cliffs. Other stops include the Secret Lagoon, Shimizu Island, 7 Commando Beach, Helicopter Island, Matinloc Shrine, Secret Beach, Star Beach, and Hidden Beach, all beach lovers’ paradise.

Matinloc Island, the longest island in El Nido, is where you’ll find Secret Beach, a hidden pocket of white sand beach. Go snorkelling around Dilumacad Island , also called Helicopter Island because of its shape. Take a selfie at the popular Matinloc Shrine.

It’s smart to time your El Nido visit off peak, sometime October to November, when there’s less people. The peak season is usually from December to May.

O2 SURF IN DULI BEACH

DULI BEACH in northern Palawan is at the center of El Nido’s surf scene, with a two-kilometer stretch of sandy beach offering a pretty consistent swell from November to April. The beach itself is beautiful, backed by a lush forest, and fringed by golden sand. Duli Beach Resort has spacious bungalows with balconies facing the sea for about P3,000 for two, including breakfast. Duli Beach rents out surfboards for Php350 an hour or Php1,000 a day and has in-house instructors for surf lessons.

TAO PHILIPPINES’ offers sailing experiences tailored to your needs, from a luxury boat tour just for two or a small private group to an open tour with a group. Private charters are also available. A luxury boat tour for two, over three days and two nights, will take you to the best of Bacuit Bay, including further north to the rarely visited parts of El Nido, and end at Tao Beach Farm. Price is from $3,300 for up to five people. Tao’s boat is a traditional Paraw, said to be the largest remaining Philippine traditional sailboat, equipped with modern rigging.

El Nido Yachting Club offers group boat tours and private boat tours in Bacuit Bay. A full day premium catamaran group tour aboard The Seacret, a 50-ft catamaran is from Php7,500. A private catamaran yacht cruise is from Php60,000.

SAIL AROUND EL NIDO IN STYLE SEE TURTLE HATCHLINGS MAKE THEIR WAY TO THE SEA

EL NIDO is a haven for sea turtles, with at least three out of five species of turtles in the Philippines — all considered threatened — known to nest in some of its beaches. The Ten Knots Group (The Knots) actively protect turtle nests and care for turtle hatchlings. Other resorts in the area such as Duli Beach Resort has the Hawksbill sea turtle and the Green sea turtle nesting on its beaches from November to February. The resort protects the nests from poachers and animals until they are ready to head to the sea.

HIKE TO NAGKALITKALIT FALLS

FOR AN ACTIVE DAY OUT, hike to Nagkalit-kalit Waterfalls and swim in a refreshing pool of water underneath two waterfalls. Start the day early and avoid the crowds. Wear beach sandals and expect to walk through a forest and get wet crossing shallow rivers. Nagkalit-Kalit is south of Twin Beach and Nacpan Beach in El Nido.

TRY SOME OF THE BEST SCUBA DIVING IN THE WORLD

EL NIDO is part of the Coral Triangle, a marine area in the western Pacific Ocean named for its wealth of corals and marine species. It’s home to the endangered sea cow, marine turtles, some 200 fish species and about 50 types of hard corals, making it a paradise for divers of every level, from novice to fullblown expert.

Popular dive sites include South Miniloc for its amazing cabbage coral and a good chance of seeing stingrays, sea turtles and perhaps manta rays; North Rock for its pelagic life; Dilumacad Tunnel for a challenging dive targeted at experienced divers; and Cave Paglugaban for its rock formations and many swim-throughs.

O7 HEAD WEST AND WATCH THE SUNSET

WHILE THERE ARE LOTS OF PLACES to watch the epic sunset in El Nido, Corong Corong in the El Nido area near Lagùn Hotel in Balinsasayaw Road has the best sunset views. Dine in one of the beachfront restaurants in the area or grab a sundowner and enjoy nature’s display. Las Cabanas Beach, south of Corong Corong Beach, in Barangay Corong Corong also offers some of the best seats in the house to watch the sun setting behind El Nido’s limestone cliffs. Another place to catch the sunset is Maremegmeg Beach, also to the south of El Nido town. There are several small resorts and casual little bars where you can grab a cocktail or a beer and grab yourself a deckchair on the sand.

O8 LOOK OUT FOR BLACKTIP REEF SHARKS

BLACKTIP REEF SHARK sightings in El Nido are quite rare and are usually from December to February, the plankton season, although there have been sightings outside this period. At the luxury Cauayan Island Resort in Cauayan Island, El Nido, baby blacktip reef sharks, are sometimes found swimming freely in the shallows close to the beachfront villas.

Another area where you’re likely to find these sharks is in Destacado Reef, located on the outskirts of Bacuit Bay, west of Guntao island. Palawan Divers can arrange dive tours to see blacktip reef sharks in Destacado. And if you’re lucky, you might be rewarded with sightings of dolphins and sea turtles along the way. Baby blacktip reef sharks, which grow to about two meters are active predators, but feed only on small fish, crustaceans, cephalopods, mollusks and at times seabirds and sea snakes.

THERE’S NOTHING LIKE seeing El Nido from the top of its iconic Taraw Cliff, the karst limestone cliffs you see rising from above the waters of Bacuit Bay. If you’re feeling brave, you could hike up the cliff, but there is an easier way. El Nido Via Ferrata now offers a canopy walk. You go up metal staircases and cross hanging bridges wearing safety gear. A guide to exploring the islands

Get your bearings

EL NIDO IN northern Palawan, about 420 kilometers southwest of Manila, is known for its stunning beaches, virgin islands and limestone cliffs. It is the gateway to Bacuit Bay, and all its 45 limestone islands and islets, all remarkable for their unique topography — featuring lagoons, caves, sandy beaches, and thriving reefs. In the distance, the jagged peaks of the islands are beautiful from almost any angle and at any time of day.

El Nido is part of the Coral Triangle, a marine area in the western Pacific Ocean named for its wealth of corals and marine species. It is home to 16 endemic bird species, Palawan-endemic marine mammals like the endangered sea cow, marine turtles, about 200 fish species and about 50 types of hard corals. Swifts, hunted for their prized eggs used in the Chinese Nido soup, nest in El Nido’s limestone cliffs and caves.

El Nido also raises the bar in eco-consciousness and sustainability, setting it apart from many tourist destinations in the country. Guests of resorts are encouraged to contribute in small ways to the area’s environmental protection.

Getting there

There are a couple of ways to get to El Nido from Manila. You may book a flight to Puerto Princesa, the capital city of the province of Palawan. From there, it’s a five to six-hour van or bus ride to El Nido. The most convenient way is booking a direct flight via AirSWIFT (www.air-swift.com) to El Nido’s private Lio Airport.

Airport

Lio Airport has a modern, tropical resort-inspired terminal, and is quite compact, which means you can walk from the tarmac to the front gate in less than five minutes.

Getting around

AirSWIFT (www.air-swift.com) is the only carrier operating direct flights to El Nido, Palawan. The flight from Manila is one and a half hours, departing from Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) terminal 4, often called the Old Domestic Airport in Pasay City. Flights land at El Nido’s private Lio Airport.

Lio Airport is the jump off point to your island adventure in El Nido. It is located in Villa Libertad, approximately four kilometers away from El Nido town

proper. From Lio Airport, you can conveniently take a 30-minute tricycle ride to the town proper. A tricycle is a three-wheeled motorbike service, with a carriage for passengers.

Tricycles are the main means of transportation. Fares are from Php100, about US$2.55. Tricycles from the main town to Lio Tourism Estate, a 5.4km ride, charge about Php300; tricycle from Corong-Corong to Lio (about 6.7km) is about Php300-Php400; tricycle from Maligaya to Lio (5.7km) is about Php300.

You may get in touch with your hotel for information on vans and motorbikes or scooters for hire. Alternatively, most hotels can arrange airport pick up and transfers.

Best time to visit

The good news is that El Nido is great for a visit yearround, as the islands generally do not experience any typhoons. Plan your visit between November to May, the dry season, to enjoy a pleasant climate.

Money

There is an ATM machine in El Nido town but it is best to bring enough Philippine pesos, the main currency, with you.

Communication

El Nido generally has phone reception and Internet connection, particularly in El Nido town and Lio. However, some parts of the island suffer from weak signal. It’s always best to check the WiFi at your hotel if you need to stay connected. Buy a local sim card (Globe or Smart) before heading to El Nido.

What’s it like?

IN 2016, GUSTO Gelato first presented its stock of homemade Italian gelato (ice cream), impressing Palawenos and tourists alike with flavors from dark chocolate, salted caramel to cherry cheesecake among a varied list. Since then it has expanded its menu to include specialty desserts, crepes, panini’s, croissants, pan au chocolat and proper coffee. Scoops cost between Php120 and Php240. A shot of Bailey’s at Php80 caps the creamy experience. Try the Nutella Coconut, Nutella Banana or Peanut Butter.

As this is a popular place, and there is always a crowd milling in front of the gelato galle seating is scant. Not to worry, the Pangolin Bar upstairs welcomes spillovers.

What’s latest?

The +Bistro appendage to the gelateria’s name introduces a new feature to enjoy — a fully air conditioned establishment offering all day breakfast, lunch and dinner in a European setting. Besides locals, visitors from Europe are among its top target clientele. Construction began on the eve of the COVID -19 breakout with business commencing on August 22 of this year.

THEY SAY, “GO where the locals go,” and in El Nido, it’s The Pangolin. Located just above Gusto Gelato along Calle Hama, The Pangolin is a fun cocktail bar where El Nido’s elite crowd, expats, and tourists love to party. For locals it’s the hippest place in town to meet up for a drink, and to unwind at the end of a business day. There are lots of small cozy corners where it’s easy to talk and the vibe is chill. Pop by early as the place gets full fast and at certain times, the security will not allow any more people in. The entrance to Pangolin is rather tricky to find. Order Pangolin’s signature drinks, each one carefully curated by Pangolin’s bartenders. Bestsellers include the Watermelon Daiquiri (Php300), made with the freshest watermelon juice and white rum, and the Green Lagoon (Php350) , a concoction of gin, midori melon liqueur, mint, and calamansi or local lime. But the creme de la creme of the cocktail menu is The Pangolin (Php300), named after the scaly anteater endemic to Palawan. It’s also where the bar derived its name from, with the advocacy of protecting these scaly mammals.

The Pangolin drink was specially-concocted by chef Eduardo Garcia. It’s a pineapple-based cocktail with tequila, and a tiny hint of local chilli so you get a burst of flavors with every sip. Trust us, before the night ends, it’ll be the drink you’ll forever remember the island by.

“One of the best things about our bar is that more and more people now know about the pangolin, when in fact, they didn’t before. I am very proud of that,” says owner Augusto Chávez who is very passionate about saving the balintong, the pangolin’s local name.

HISTORICAL SITES

World War II Museum

This privately-owned museum houses World War II artifacts, from vehicles used during the war, miniature war planes and ships, old denominations, and the names of the 1,000 local guerrillas who fought against the Japanese. Expect a Php30 entrance fee.

Plaza Cuartel

Plaza Cuartel is the site of the infamous Palawan Massacre, where 143 American soldiers were burned alive by Japanese soldiers. Now a national historical site, it remains a grim reminder of World War II, with a memorial located in the middle of the park, listing the 143 casualties, and 11 survivors.

Balai Princesa ditches single-plastic use and uses only cassava eco bags, and plant-based packaging from straws to food boxes and bin bags. It also sends any used plastic containers to a recycling partner that repurposes these plastic items. Food waste goes to the compost at Balai Princesa’s backyard.

Back Story

DINERS IN THIS picturesque establishment, set in a lush forest grove and encircled by sprawling lawns, may not realize the rich history behind their current location. Viet Ville was born out of the influx of Vietnamese migrants to the Philippines in 1975. Some 300 of these migrants were eventually relocated to what we now know as Viet Ville.

Migrants kept busy with a number of livelihood projects such as a French bread bakery, noodle manufacturing, fish sauce processing and Viet Ville Restaurant among others. This allowed both visitors and the local community to generate income and eventually stand on their own.

Many of the original chefs have left the country, but they were generous enough to pass on techniques in their cuisine to Filipino counterparts, allowing Viet Ville to still uncontestedly claim authenticity. All these years, it has been guided and nurtured by the Apostolic Vicarate of Puerto Princesa, which led the restaurant into a new phase by entering into partnership with a local entrepreneur to manage Viet Ville. What not to miss on the menu

Viet Ville is the only restaurant in Puerto Princesa that serves the bestselling Cháo lòng, essentially a rice porridge with pork ribs and offals. The thinly sliced offals and ribs are slow cooked and seasoned with typical Vietnamese flavors, served with herbs and spices. Some restaurants in Puerto Princesa serve a version of Pho, calling it “Chao Long,” which it isn’t. It’s a bit of a mix up. Bestsellers include the beef stew noodles, pork sparerib noodles, and Vietnamese Fresh Lumpia. Also popular are Vietnamese staples of spring rolls — they have a chicken version here — and Bahn Mi (short crusty baguette packed with meat and savouries). These staples, prepared Viet Ville style, will easily transport you to what seems like a local outlet in Hanoi or Saigon. The garlic bread (Php50) and chicken pho, (Php180) are already a complete and satisfying combo for those who want a quick meal.

INTRODUCTION

Boracay, a small bone-shaped island 300 km south of Manila, fringed by the Sulu Sea to the west and the Sibuyan Sea to the east, is one of the most popular beach destinations in Asia. Let’s make that the World. It’s not hard to see why. It has one of the world’s most beautiful milky white sand beaches, crystal clear waters for snorkeling and scuba diving, activities ranging from parasailing to mountain biking and some of the buzziest cafes, restaurants and nightlife in the region. And yet Boracay has never really lost its laid-back desert island vibe. New environmental regulations and caps in the number of visitors have preserved Boracay as a tropical gem. There’s no drinking or smoking on the beach, but that’s not a problem — not when you’ve got those stunning sunsets to enjoy.

Boracay’s main attraction is White Beach, a 4-km westerly facing stretch of perfect white sand lapped by turquoise, tropical waters. It has three landmarks: Boat Stations 1, 2 and 3 — areas where ferries land when they do the run from the airport at Caticlan, a few kms away on the island of Panay. Boat Station 1 is at the northern end of the beach (near the four-star Two Seasons Boracay Resort); Boat Station 2 is roughly in the middle and the best arrivals point for the busiest area of the beach (this is where most of the shopping, restaurants, and other services are located, plus a good range of accommodation, from budget to small hotels); and Boat Station 3 is towards the southern end near the Astoria Current hotel.

There’s not much to do at Puka Beach except snooze and swim, which is what makes it such a beauty. You’ll find a few stalls and restaurants on the beach that sell drinks, snacks, souvenirs, and fresh coconut. Puka shell bracelets, necklaces and anklets are a bargain. Bring a book and forget about the world for a while. You can reach Puka easily by tricycle. Diniwid Beach — more of a sleepy cove than a beach — is connected by footpath to its brasher cousin, White Beach, a short walk to the north. It’s the perfect place to swim and chill for the day before heading back to White Beach for the nightlife. You won’t go hungry. The rustic Dinibeach Bar and Restaurant has good breakfasts, pasta, salads, fruit shakes, lassis and cocktails.

TIRED OF WHITE BEACH? Boracay has a dozen beaches and coves, with Puka Beach — on the northern coast — a real gem in its own right, named after the translucent seashells found in the area. beach is the quietest, but around Boat Station 2 there are welcoming little cafes where you can take a break from doing nothing with a drink and a snack. Try the beachfront Epic Boracay (after dark it’s a nightclub) for a healthy cucumber slam (Php180) or detox mint (Php170), or the Aria Italian restaurant for pasta, tuna carpaccio (Php400), Caesar’s salad (Php400) and a ripe mango or papaya juice (Php140).

GET HIGH AT MOUNT LUHO

MOUNT LUHO, north of Bulabog Beach in the island’s northeast quarter, is the island’s highest peak at about 100 meters above sea level and has a lookout point offering magnificent and sweeping 360-degree views of the island. It’s another good place to watch the sun start setting, although it closes at 5pm so you won’t be able to stay for sunset itself (if you’re looking for special photos, you will be able to take advantage of the magically soft late afternoon light). GET ACTIVE AT BULABOG

THE 2.5-KM BULABOG BEACH (also known as Back Beach) is on Boracay’s eastern coast and gets onshore summer winds, making it a perfect location for kiteboarding and windsurfing. This is the place for kiteboarding. Some say it’s the best kiteboarding location in Asia because of its flat, shallow waters and guaranteed breezy conditions.

Bulabog is a 10-minute walk from the Main Road (by the D’Mall of Boracay shops near Boat Station 2).

LEARN TO FLY LIKE IRON MAN

FOR THE ULTIMATE YOLO experience try flyboarding, hoverboarding or flybiking, the fastest growing new watersports to hit the waters of Boracay. You’ll learn to use water-jet propelled equipment, which allows propulsion in the air and under the water. Feel the thrill of flying over the waves, or the rush of

streaming under them. Once you’re on it nothing can stop you, not even gravity. Xtreme Fun (inland from Le Solei de Boracay near Boat Station 2) will take you to its “flyboard launch platform” just off the coast. On average, you can learn to fly in less than five minutes, although some will take longer. A session is usually 30 minutes and will cost around Php4,000. Boracay Water Sports Association (BWSA) president Russell Cruz offers parasailing at Bulabog Beach during the season (June to October). You’ll soar to a height of about 50m and stay up for at least 15 minutes.There are plenty of other watersports on the island. They include kiteboarding (from about Php3,300 for an introductory course); windsurfing, (from Php750 per hour for equipment rental and Php2,250 for a two-hour beginner course); kayaking (from Php1,000 per hour); standup paddle boarding (from Php300 for a half hour); jet skiing (from Php2,000 for 15 minutes; banana boat rides (from Php350 per person); parasailing (from Php2,000 per person; UFO ride (Php600 per person, 15 minutes); speed boat rental (from Php5,400 an hour, minimum five people); scuba diving and snorkeling (from Php3,000 for an intro or discover dive). CATCH THE SUNSET

MAKE SURE YOU’RE ON WHITE BEACH for sunset, around 6pm. White Beach faces west and watching the sun go down is something of a tradition. When it’s over, it’s time to get warmed up for the night. Head to Exit Bar (beachfront, north of Boat Station 2), where the drinks are cheap — and strong — and you can order native snacks including kilawin (cold fish mixed with vinegar and citrus), calamares and sisig (pig's face and belly, and chicken liver). Other good bars in the area are Summer Place, Kasbar, OM Bar, and Epic Boracay. (See page 72 for more on night life on the island). Many beachfront bars have special sunset happy hour rates.

SWIM LIKE A MERMAID — TAIL INCLUDED

MERMAID SWIMMING has gained a following in Boracay, with fans as young as eight, all wanting to learn how to be Disney’s Ariel. The Philippine Mermaid Swimming Academy (PMSA) can make your fantasy come true and help you escape into the mysterious mythical world of mermaids. The PMSA teaches young and old alike how to mermaid swim, with mermaid tail fitting and costumes included in the price. Courses include an introduction to mermaid swimming for Php2,000 in a pre-scheduled class for 90 minutes. A private intro class is from Php2,200 for three or more people to Php3,200 for one. Mermaid lessons will see you learn the four basic swim strokes and breathing techniques. Freestyle sessions are an opportunity to practice your new skills

BORACAY’S BAT POPULATION is declining, but if you’re patient and know where to look, you can still catch sight of majestic bats in flight at places including Balinghai Beach, a roosting site for the little mammals. Friends of the Flying Foxes (FFF), a group of wildlife enthusiasts comprising of Boracay residents, says bats on the island include flying foxes (Pteropus hypomelanus), short-nosed fruit bats, musky fruit bats and, if you’re lucky enough to see one, the golden crowned flying fox — the largest flying mammals in the world and endemic to Boracay and Philippine forests. The bats are crucial to the island’s ecosystem, if nothing else because they keep the insect population under control — one bat can eat up to 2,000 mosquitoes a night. They roost on the cliffside hills and mountain ridges of Barangay Yapak and in the trees at Puka Beach (during the amihan season, approximately from November-June) and Ilig Iligan Beach (during the rainy habagat season that starts around July). Your best chance of catching fruit bats in flight is to head to these areas at dusk.

SEE RURAL LIFE and shake off a few pounds on a bike ride with a guide, stopping at locations including Willy’s Rock, Bulabog Beach, the Ati Tribal Village community project, the Lugutan Mangrove Park and Puka Beach. The tour is flexible so you can go where you want — as long as it’s accessible on two wheels — and see the island from a different perspective. Choose

from an easy ride, mainly on flat roads, or moderate and hard rides, including climbs and scenic routes. You can build in some time for swimming and souvenir shopping along the way. What not to miss on the menu

Whether you’re big on seafood or you’re a meat lover, the choices on the menu are varied. Order grilled octopus for starters or mussels steamed in beer with chorizo, chilli, garlic, and served with garlic toast. Or go for the seafood board at Indigo Restaurant and feast on lobster, mud crabs, hard shell clams, prawn and Chilean mussels. From Forno Osteria’s Josper oven, order US prime Angus rib eye or, indulge in freshly made pizza and pasta. The resort also serves the best breakfast on the island.

There are five restaurants in all, with popular Indigo offering seasonal coastal cuisine, Forno Osteria offering Italian fare, Sands Restaurant serving local comfort food. Sand Bar for the perfect setting to enjoy Boracay’s sunset, and 360 Roof Lounge for some of the best views of the island.

Lunch or dinner would set you back around Php1,500-2,000 per person for a three-course meal.

Just a few steps from the entrance is Boracay’s shores and crystal-clear waters, with enough sand space for you to lay down your beach mat and soak up some rays before taking a dip. Heads-up, though: the location isn’t very private and quiet — it’s a populated and public area, with many passers-by and vendors around, especially in the late afternoon. At this time, before sunset, many boats also park by the shore, so your beachfront view can get obstructed. But the sunset will still steal the show!

Zuzuni’s view is a lovely sight to wake up to, since the area isn’t so congested yet in the morning, so it’s highly recommended to book Zuzuni’s premier beachfront room on the second floor. The room’s balcony comes with a table and chairs, so you can people-watch and soak up the view while enjoying your breakfast from above.

Room-wise, it’s a steal, especially for its reasonable prices ranging from Php2000 to Php4000+ a night. You get a clean, bright, and spacious room; a big, cozy bed (double, queen, or king); hypoallergenic pillows; cable TV; WiFi; attentive staff; closet space; a large bench; private balcony; basic CR amenities; complimentary water, regular room cleaning and sanitation; and a medical-grade Air Intellipure Air Purifier with DFS

Technology that’s 40x more effective than HEPA filters. In this “wellness hotel” room, you’ll definitely breathe easy (literally).

The CR is a bit small in size, but it’s modern and clean. And since it’s a boutique hotel with no fuss and no frills, don’t expect 24/7 room service, room telephone, a fully-stocked mini bar, key card, or other fancy hotel perks. Since there’s no elevator, be ready to climb a flight of stairs or two to get to your room, but it’s not that high.

Hungry? Thankfully, the hotel houses Latin American bar and resto Muchos downstairs, which offers seven breakfast options to choose from, available from 7am to 11am with free brewed coffee or iced tea.

I had a full and filling plate of Bacon, Beans, and Eggs (Php250) with crispy bacon, baked beans in tomato sauce, and two sunny-side up eggs with crisp, buttery bread (you can choose your kind of eggs). The next morning, I was looking for something lighter, and so the Yogurt and Muesli (Php250) sufficed, featuring thick, tangy homemade yogurt, mixed muesli, and fresh fruit.

The Bacon and Vegetable Omelette (Php250), which I had without bacon and with baked bread, also satisfied. On my last morning was my favorite Arroz Caldo (Php250), a Latin American fusion winner of thick Filipino rice porridge that’s extra savory, made with different spices and served with crunchy garlic, spring onion, and soft-boiled eggs. You can have it with grilled chicken, but you can also request for a vegan option. They were all big servings!

If you’re looking for a simple and straightforward boutique hotel to stay in while you explore the rest of Boracay (with clean, comfortable, and airy rooms), Zuzuni is a great budget-friendly option to consider, especially if you’re after its prime, convenient location; beachfront view and access; and if you don’t mind the occasional hustle and bustle of Boracay.

Zuzuni can also plan out your land-and-sea transfer services, courtesy of Southwest Travel and Tours. You’ll be taken care of via private boat and van shuttle — from arriving at Caticlan Airport, to transferring to the boat port, and being dropped off at the main road by Zuzuni (you’ll just need to take a short walk).

What not to miss on the menu

This hotel has its own eccentric dining concept called BACON (Facebook.com/alldaybacon). It has an all-day bacon menu, incorporating one common ingredient — their homemade cured bacon — in almost all the dishes, from their homemade cured bacon — in (almost) all the dishes, from appetizers to desserts. Try their staples such as bacon sisig (there’s no other like it in Boracay); candied bacon smokies or sausages wrapped in bacon with a special sweet glaze; bacon belly, a thick sliced bacon served with garlic rice. Dishes range from Php350 to Php670. At night, especially on weekends, they have local and foreign DJs spinning and playing at the bar side of the restaurant.

THE VIBE. Get a front-row view of Boracay’s sunrise by day and sunset by night at Kasbar Boracay, the old Kasbah, bought two years ago in the middle of the pandemic and renamed Kasbar. Owner Erielyn Gaston said the cuisine stayed the same, but the interiors were redesigned. The place has a distinct Moroccan beach vibe, with colorful beach parasols on the beachfront. Walls inside are painted blue and white, tables draped in gold cloth, and the flooring made to match the prints on the walls and tablecloths.

WHAT NOT TO MISS ON THE MENU.

The food is a mix of Greek, Mediterranean, and Moroccan. The bestsellers are hummus, lamb tagine and grilled Mahi Mahi fish, served kebab style. Don’t miss the Moroccan bowl which includes seafood, couscous, pitta bread. The creamy spinach pita pizza melts in your mouth, bite after bite. For dessert, the owner’s favorite is baklava with homemade ice cream. Kasbar also has kid-friendly meals.

THE VIBE. OM Bar Boracay made its awaited comeback last March 2021, attracting the island’s party crowd. The place is huge, with space for both dining and dancing. The central DJ desk is surrounded by tables and chairs for diners. Seating extends out on the beach with low tables and large pillows made for lounging. If you’re walking along White Beach in search of party, food, and drinks, then you won’t miss OM with neon lights announcing its presence.

THE VIBE. Exit? More like an entry for anyone who’s up for dance music all night long! EXIT Bar Boracay comes to life every Saturday night at 9pm onwards for some dancing and partying with DJ Rei Rei (trance/house) and DJ Tong (90s hip-hop/reggaeton). Unlike other bars, this place doesn’t have fancy decorations or bright night lights, but you’ll definitely feel the island vibe with its interiors painted by local artists. A tiki-inspired wood carving bears the name “EXIT” painted in bright colors. The repurposed giant tires as tables and the uneven panel chairs give this beachfront bar a provincial and rustic charm.

WHAT NOT TO MISS ON THE MENU. The place offers chori burger and Pinoy street BBQs that go perfectly well with their alcoholic drinks.

DRINKS. Affordable drinks from beer to other hard liquor and cocktails. A Jack Daniels is about Php180, and Weng-Weng and Caipirana cocktails, both priced at Php150.

WELL, AS THEY say, the music here is banging, the outfit is sexy summer, and the vibe is fun. Enter at your own risk, because the party never stops and the dancing could be a little frenzied. But we do want passion in our lives and this is the place to be. Summer Place is one of the pioneers in Boracay’s party scene. Built during the late 90s with a tropical, beach-y design, the club has transformed into a high-energy pulsing light and sound show of a place with some of the best LED and plasma lights rivalling the best clubs in Manila. The natural beach vibe is still very much alive with huge lit up photos of underwater creatures on walls, repurposed kayaks, wood accents, multi-coloured tribal

masks, bean bags, hanging lamps and the ever present silver disco mirrored balls hanging from the ceiling. It’s a place mostly for young revellers. The music is a mix of reggaetton, dance hall, Afro beats, hip-hop and R&B, and peaks with Electronic Dance Music for a blissed-out crowd.

Good to know

Summerplace has 2 floors. The first level is the realm of DJs and the dancing crowd. The second level houses VIP lounges with a chic, modern and relaxed vibe. Bottles of premium Liquor deck the bar while another separate DJ performs nightly. Closing time is at 3 am.

What’s your poison?

Drinking yourself crazy is no longer cool, but it helps to know that if you’ve drunk too many, you need not drive or call a Grab. Thank God you’re on a beach island where walking and tricycles are the thing. The drinks are a blend of classics and a fusion of favorites like shark attack and various flavors of daiquiri . If you’re feeling daring, order a tower, drinks poured in a meter long container. There is of course the regular ice cold beer, wine, and cocktails.

Casual, laidback, with a Melbourne café vibe with lots of greenery. The restaurant, located on the ground floor of Hue Hotel, has a floor to ceiling glass facade and glass doors, allowing cheery natural light to stream in.

Good to know

The restaurant’s ethos is rooted in the saying, “Eat Good Feel Good”, which means serving food made from scratch using good quality ingredients, obtained from sustainable, organic, or natural sources, mostly from small farms in the Visayas. Bread is baked on site.

On Wednesdays, it’s “Indian eats and DJ beats” time, with great tunes from Boracay based DJs. Happy hour specials offers 50% off all class cocktails from 3-7pm.

What not to miss on the menu

A selection of traditional and Indian inspired street food (chaat), curry, biryani, chai and more. Crowd pleasers include lamb seekh kebab, handmade lamb kebab marinated in Indian spices and cooked in a traditional clay tandoori oven; potato dosa, crispy dosa stuffed with spiced potato filling served with homemade chutneys. And not to be missed are the chicken tikka masala and Hyderabadi biryani, and beef and vegetable samosas.

ASMALL, FAMILY-RUN LATIN American kitchen and bar, with tables both indoors and right on the beachfront. The interior reflects boho flair with natural rattan pendant lamp shades and chairs, and cheerful comfy cushions. The best time to book a table perhaps is at sunset as Muchos commands some of the best sunset views. The restaurant opened only last March 2022 and is fast becoming an island favourite. The place shakes up the usual bar rounds on Fridays with Friday serenades, and during the week, watch out for Latin dance nights.

What not to miss on the menu

Bestsellers are Muchos’ tequila, margaritas, and Mezcal-based cocktails. Its mezcal bar is the first of its kind on the island. Tacos and Latin mains are crowd pleasers and so are the Peruvian ceviches and skewers and ultra fresh Latin bowls. Don’t miss the Barbacoa bowl, slow roasted beef with chimichurri sauce and pickled onion and fresh pico de Gallo served with cilantro rice.

The restaurant uses the freshest ingredients, sourced locally, and South American spices to deliver the best Latin flavours, from Peruvian, Bolivian, Spanish to Mexican. The Peruvian ceviches, fresh fish marinated in citrus juices, is an absolute joy. Dishes here are all kinds of fabulous, with the bold hit of citrus and chilli, turning up your senses to max.

Service here is excellent. Muchos restaurateur couple Patrick and Shria Florencio, who also own Nonie’s and Little Taj in Boracay, says the personal touch sets the restaurant apart.

THIS NEW BEACH cafe located in the little corner of Loop and Epic D’Mall in Boracay is the perfect spot for an early breakfast or relaxed brunch, or for simply sitting and watching the world go by. With a very chill and colourful vibe — you won’t miss the shocking pink couch and on the wall, a bright neon sign saying, “Gimme Some of That” — Gratitude Cafe is like a warm welcome hug to everyone that drops by. Tiki-inspired hanging lamps also lend warmth to the place and so do the beautifully hand-painted murals. The fact that it’s a minute away from the beach is an added bonus.

The staff are friendly and prepare some of the best fresh sandwiches, pancakes and pastas with fine artisanal breads, as well as crisp pastries and ultrayummy smoothie bowls. Locally sourced teas and aromatic coffees, roasted and blended by the cafe’s skilled baristas, provide a delicious accompaniment to your meal.

To perk up and start your day, order the iced cappuccino or café mocha Shakes come in various flavors, from banana, watermelon, and pineapple to mango. Smoothie bowls, a mix of pureed frozen fruit topped with various nuts, seeds, and nibs, is popular for breakfast. And so are its IG-worthy pancakes, waffles, and omelettes.

There are lots of pasta choices from chorizo pasta, angel hair clam in garlic, spaghetti, and penne marinara and sausages. If you just want to lounge and have a drink, there is a good drinks menu. Abby’s Favorite is a good take on the rosé wine, mixed with refreshing watermelon and lemon juice (Php225). Other choices include the classic Margarita, and the Cucumber Tonic, a light concoction of gin, cucumber, lemon, and mint tonic . For fun drinks that pack a punch, go for the Ginger Sour (whiskey, ginger, sweet and sour mix), and Kombucha Mojito (rhum, lemon, mint syrup, mint, mango kombucha).

From cassava to eco bags, from sugarcane to takeaway boxes, this new company is selling plantbased alternatives to single-use plastic

LAUNCHED ONLY THREE months ago, Bee Ph is helping hotels, restaurants, cafes and businesses in Palawan go green. The company sells plant-based packaging products, providing an eco-friendly alternative to single use plastic.

Bee’s main products are cassava bags or eco bags, made from the root crop cassava; eco food containers made from bagasse, a pulpy material from sugarcane scraps; durable straws made from either bamboo fibre or kraft paper; and cups, suitable for hot and cold drinks, made from bagasse and kraft paper. These are all biodegradable and compostable. Cassava bags are soluble in hot water, and the solution can be used to water plants as an added nitrogen component. Even the ink used for printing is soybased, safe for consumption by microorganisms. Use of cassabags can significantly reduce the plastics ending up in our oceans, protecting our marine life and bird life.

Several municipalities in Palawan have already banned single use plastics, but the lack of affordable and sustainable alternatives is a problem. Bee saw the opportunity and sourced materials from Econest Philippines, the Philippines’ distributor of sustainable packaging products.

“We do not see ourselves as a supply store, but more of an ecofriendly packaging partner for businesses in the area. We do not simply carry sustainable packaging materials, we actively educate the community about the gravity of our plastic pollution problem and offer a solution,” Xian Sing, founder of Bee PH, said. He said that while sustainable products are costlier than traditional packaging, Bee PH is committed to keeping prices as low as possible to make eco products more accessible. The company prioritizes what it calls “the triple bottomline,” namely People, Planet, Profit.
