Earth Science 101 Meets the Artist’s Color Wheel

DOROTHY FAGAN Our Innate Nature When we open the artist color wheel into a straight line, we see a rainbow of light flowing through the heart. This channel of wavelengths flows along the spine, delivering electrical energy to every cell in the body. Creating a home to support a vibrant heart, Nature cues our perfect balance with earth and sky. You innately know this with your body. Your feet take you for a walk under a big sky to clear your mind. You tread along earthy trails for soothing comfort. You saunter through grassy greens for peace and joy. But when you come inside, your mind gets caught up in a million considerations. Without connection between earth and body, your heart gets lost. Disconnected. I’ve been using my palette to balance earth and sky colors in my paintings and in my home for decades. You feel my heart in my art and when I speak.

Color Balance: Light Beings Aligned by Nature Your body and spirit connect through your heart. You move vital Light energy by ‘breathing’ in love, and exhaling love. I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know! But read it again and breathe. Exhale, then breathe in all the love. And think about your heart in a colorful new way. Let’s create a fertile home to live well, stay vital. To do this we align with Nature. Since we no longer sleep in rawhide hammocks in the woods, we have forgotten how to do this. You are not alone in relearning innate information for a new century. So, let’s look at the physics of how the body uses energy. Chakra energy centers along the spine vibrate with light energy. Think rainbow spectrum splitting each color wavelength to the chakra that needs it. When balance is present, the heart bridge opens and flows to all energy centers. This is how we experience ‘the flow.’ Energy is delivered to each organ in the body from its corresponding energy center. Vitality is present in our natural state ~ unless we interrupt the heart flow.

My Vitality Palette 6 Colors Translate Nature’s Spectrum My palette aligns with the chakras. During my residency in France, I shifted my palette to align with the landscape in Brittany. As I began a ten-year exploration of the juxtaposition of organic and man-made structures in the landscape, six colors instigated the discovery of my Vitality Chakra palette.

Rising from bedrock of earth, ancient structures were built into villages and cathedrals. When looking at your home, we begin with this foundational connection. To do this, we look at the way the palette of your home connects YOU with the landscape. Ideally, we want a good balance. The easy way to see whether your home is balanced is to assess the proportions of earth and sky. For this exercise, we’ll say ‘earth’ is warm and ‘sky’ is cool. ‘Warm’ colors relate to earth-connected chakras; red, orange, and yellow. These chakras are in the lower portion of your body, below the heart. ‘Cool’ colors relate to sky; blue, indigo, violet, connecting intuition and spirit chakras, located above the heart. (I realize you may think of earth colors as something more specific. However, for this exercise we are using the palette in a more foundational way.) This will enable us to assess your home for balance in harmony with Nature. When doing your assessment, simply think of whether each element in your home is generally warm or cool. Specific hues and intensities, neutrals and whites are not necessary to distinguish ~ yet.

Assessment Assessing balance is subjective. Your sense of balance can vary over your lifetime. Your spouse’s sense of balance can be different than yours. This assessment intends to establish a picture of your present state of balance. This could provide you with ideas for improvement. Or serve as a benchmark for when your needs change.

Signs of Not Being Grounded There are many signs and signals when we are not grounded. Many we handle without thinking. Others cause us discomfort or injury. For instance, I recently had a client tell me she is concerned about falling. This tells me she is not grounded. In fact, when I questioned her about this, she was unaware and unsure how to be and stay grounded.

Open Concept Spaces Use heART colors to direct the light through open spaces to mirror and magnify your vitality. All the rage in contemporary design aesthetics, open concept spaces have given us beautiful lightfilled homes. Neutral walls, floors, and furnishings contribute to the open feeling. But if we don’t ground and direct all that light to the heart, we can feel lost or floating.

Color Balance Think about that rainbow again, how white light refracts through a prism splitting into the full spectrum. Our bodies need full-spectrum light energy in every cell. Color grounds and connects us body and spirit. Colors that align with chakras below the heart ground and soothe us. Colors that align with chakras above the heart uplift us. Chakras work together in teams, one below the other above the heart. Each chakra channels wavelengths in turn ~ opening a flow of light through the heart center. You are innately drawn to colors by your chakras. Unless you detour with thoughts and considerations, think, or try to match, or ignore what our hearts have to say about it ~ as a moth to light, you are the light!

Heart Signals The BEST art is the piece you absolutely LOVE! Match it to your heart, not your house😊 Think of the major walls in your great room as a cradle of LOVE for your heart. Perhaps a triangle, these focal point walls mirror and magnify your heart energy. Use your heart cradle walls to direct energy throughout your home to support you in your daily activities. When friends visit, your heART energy draws people to the kitchen for lively activities, to the dining table for soothing space to digest ideas, and to the living area for relaxing, reading, or visiting.
