Merry Christmas Bournemouth! I truly cannot believe that a whole year has passed by. Hayden, our son, had his 8th Birthday last week so we were extra busy with a family bowling trip to Tower Park, followed a few days later with a party at Snowtrax. Life is one big party at this age… I wonder why we change it? Maybe we should switch the TV off, forget the news, get the old fashion games out of the loft and actually talk to each other. Just an idea. Christmas is certainly a good time for families and we will definitely be playing board games as well as a few electronic ones to keep our youngest generation happy. I love it and I hope you do too. We have a full little magazine for you this month, so do take the time to look through. When calling any of the advertisers inside please mention The Bournemouth Directory. This makes all the difference. The lucky winner of the prize wordsearch and the family set of tickets for the Jack and the Beanstalk Pantomime at the Bournemouth Pavilion was Mrs S Overall. Have a great night out! This month there is a Champagne Hamper for the winner, so good luck with that one! We also have an additional game… can you spot how many Father Christmas with Rudolf pictures there are hidden in the magazine?? There is a bottle of wine for the first person to send the correct answer in on the form on page 25! Steve and I here at Dorset Publications wish you a really Happy Christmas and a Wonderful New Year. Whatever you do, keep smiling! All the Very Best,

Debbie

Portchester serves ace for Dorset’s finest A BOURNEMOUTH secondary served an ace when it helped Dorset’s finest young table tennis players battle for a place in the national finals. 150 students from 15 Dorset schools – the biggest turnout yet – used Portchester School’s new Sports Hall for th e E n glish S ch ools Ta b le T en n is Association (ESTTA) county knockouts. The full day of tournament, which is held annually, was played out on 20 tables in the new state-of-the-art sports facility watched by cheering spectators. The U13 boy’s category was won by Cranborne 1, who became Dorset champions for the first time. Glenmoor 1 came out trumps in the U13 girls, in a close match against their second team. In the U16s boys, Canford was one of the new schools taking part in the tournament this year but despite their valiant efforts they were beaten by Portchester in the final. The Bournemouth School for Boys players cruised through all their matches in the U19s category, and even had time to give a few pointers to spectators. The winning teams will now head to Plymouth on January 15 to represent Dorset in the national Zone Finals. Portchester coach James Lewis, from the English Table Tennis Association (ETTA), said: “Many thanks as always must go to Portchester School - for letting us again

host the tournament - the schools for bringing across their talented players; and last but not least, the extraordinarily kind local table tennis volunteers who without their help these events would not be possible.” Portchester is also due to host the county individual event on January 28. What next for house prices in Bournemouth 2012? Are we at the bottom of the fall in property prices? Will there be a double dip? There is much speculation about this in the media but much of what you hear and read is about relates to the UK average.

S o w h a t a b o u t Bo u r n e m ou t h ? S t e v e McCullough, proprietor of Clarkes Estate Agents in Bournemouth says “Bournemouth has a more robust property market than most of the UK. More people come to Bournemouth than leave and that attracts Investors and Landlords as well as home owners” T h e Bo u r n e m o u t h m a r k e t p e a k e d i n December 2007 when average prices in Bournemouth were £192,985. The UK market peaked at £182,868 and prices fell until April 2009. Prices in Bournemouth fell by 20% but have shown a modest increase in average prices since then to £169,659. The UK market however had a slight recovery but fell slightly in 2010 and 2011 to £162,109.

able to. The weak economic conditions will naturally hold people back but demand for Bournemouth property remains high.” Clarkes Estate Agents in Winton have found that well presented properties with Professional Photography are achieving offers much closer to asking prices than those that haven’t. Claire Sheppard, Senior Partner, said “We stress to our vendors how important photo day is. Professional Photography is expensive and we only get one photo shoot. It’s a buyers market and It’s important to show the property at it’s very best”. For a free valuation of your property or advice on buying property in Bournemouth you can speak to Steve and Claire and the team at Clarkes on 01202 533377. www.clarkesproperties.co.uk

Is There Life Post op? So many people these days who suffer joint pain when walking are having their quality of life enhanced massively by fantastic advances in surgery and technology. Many people whose lives had been significantly impaired by excruciating pain are now able to walk, travel, play sport for another 20 - 30 years. However sometimes the operation whether it is a hip or knee replacement, ligament repair or cartilage repair does not live up to the promises the patient was given. Most often this is because the rehabilitation was not carried out correctly or in some cases - not at all. Rehabilitation is one of the most crucial steps to ensuring a successful operation. Muscles remain very weak after an operation, the inflammation and post op swelling may remain stubborn and the joint structures remain stiff. When the patient tries to walk, their leg doesn’t work normally and they find they have on going pain or even worse - they start to notice pain in other joints that were not previously painful due to compensation. Body in Motion has a full rehabilitation studio and work closely with the patient to strengthen their limbs correctly and restore their normal walking gait. They also ensure the patient is taught the very best self-care exercises at home. Treatment is given on the injured joint if it needs help with reducing swelling, increasing the range of motion and reducing the pain.

BD December 2011 page 12

If rehabilitation is ignored, the wound will heal but it will heal stiff, with weak muscles and a poor walking pattern around it. Often the patient is left with a painful, stiff hip or knee and unable to return to sport or reasonable activity. If in doubt, do seek help as very often, it does not take long at all to put you on the right track and get to back living life to the full! Puppies Find Peel2Save Cards Scrumptious Fundraising Idea The Mayor and The Mayoress of Bournemouth headed the guest list for the official launch of the Peel2Save fundraising card held at the Playgolf Centre. Other guests included local MP Tobias Ellwood, charity organisers and business leaders. But the stars of the show were the Woofability puppies who captured the hearts of all in attendance and who thought the idea was good enough to eat. Following the opening presentation by Debbie Shepherd and Peter Bartholomew, co-ordinators for Peel2Save in the area of Bournemouth, The Worshipful, The Mayor of Bournemouth Councillor Chris Rochester praised the initiative; “It’s the smaller, local charities that need more help in these difficult times” he said “and I wish Peel2ASave all success”. Di Pestell, a fundraiser from Julia’s House added her good wishes and then gave a heartfelt description of the challenges that are facing charitable organisations today; “It won’t be any easier next year” she said “and we need all the help we can get. We have to go on because the causes that rely on us still go on needing our help”. She went on to agree with Debbie’s view that Peel2Save was not there to replace existing fundraising activities, but was an original and effective addition that would really boost and enhance their steadfast efforts. “The great thing is that charities are now able to give something back to people who make donations to them”, said Di. Peel2Save helps local charities and not-forprofit groups raise funds without incurring any speculative costs. The attractive discount card folds to the size of a credit card, fits neatly into a purse or wallet and

BD December 2011 page 18

contains 64 peel-off money saving vouchers, each one donated by a local business. The card costs £10 and contains hundreds of pounds worth of savings for all the family. Cards are sold exclusively by or on behalf of the good causes who gain £5 from the sale of each one. Charities, schools, churches, sports clubs and virtually any other group can benefit. “Fundraisers I have spoken to are looking forward to selling the card - knowing they are raising money but also giving the purchaser of Peel2Save a great deal”, said Peter. “It is our aim to raise £50,000 in the next 12 months for good causes in the Bournemouth area.” If you are a charity or not for profit group and would like to know more about Peel2Save and how it can help you to fundraise please email Debbie and Peter at:

December’s Gardening Tips From Paul Chatfield of Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services Fruit In favourable conditions fruit trees can be Trees and Shrubs Always give your plants good thoughts!

Trees and shrubs can still be planted, however be careful with the roots when moving and try not to disturb too much soil, also none frosty conditions.

Climbers and Wall-Plants Planting can still be carried out now good supporting methods should be used. Training and cleaning up of leaves.

Roses Support roses over the winter to save from damage, leaves should be cleared up, healthy ones can be composted and diseased ones burnt.

Borders and Beds Planting and supporting can still be carried out if conditions are not frosty. Protect plants if necessary with a good mulch or straw.

Bulbs and Corms Hand weed or hoe weed seeds to keep down for the spring flowering, during mild spells.

Rock Gardens and Pools

planted, pruning can still be carried out on apple and pears only.

Vegetables Time for your seeds to be ordered before Christmas. Some vegetables in open g ro u n d w o u l d b e n e f it f ro m s om e protection.

Greenhouse and Frame Glass needs washing and disinfectant applied. Insulation should be done. This will obviously cut down costs for working greenhouses.

House Plants Be careful not to water too much, it is easy to make the compost too soggy so the roots would then lack air, ideal temps are from 50-70 degrees Fahrenheit. Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services North 2, Sway Storage & Workshops Barrows Lane, Sway, Lymington Hants, SO41 6DD

Seeds of many alpines cannot germinate successfully unless exposed to a period of freezing or snow, which in their native habitats breaks dormancy.

Lawns If ground is not wet or sticky spiking to improve aeration can be carried out, during mild weather, a sprinkling of sharp sand can be good also.

JACK AND THE BEANSTALK THE BOURNEMOUTH PAVILION PANTOMIME SATURDAY 3 DECEMBER 2011 – MONDAY 2 JANUARY 2012 After spectacularly breaking box office records with ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ in 2009, and following the overwhelming success of ‘Cinderella’ last year - UK Productions brings you a giant pro duc ti o n o f ‘ J a ck a nd th e Beanstalk’, this year’s Bournemouth Pavilion Pantomime. Make sure the whole family is full of beans this Christmas and follow the hilarious tale of the ups and downs of young Jack Trott played by Debra Stevenson (The Impressions Show & Coronation Street), the boy who manages to sell the family’s only valuable possession, Daisy the Cow, for a handful of beans (and they weren’t even Heinz!). He ends up having to climb a giant beanstalk into the clouds and a whole heap of trouble, to retrieve the cow and to try and impress the King. Jack is helped and hindered along the way by his less than bright brother Silly Billy played by CBeebies

BD December 2011 page 26

star and Bournemouth panto favourite Chris Jarvis, the Good Fairy, Kate Weston from Wave 105, and his long-suffering mother Dame Trott played hilariously by one of the country’s top panto dames, Nick Wilton better known as Mr Lister from Eastenders. Join Jack on his quest to defeat the evil Giant Blunderbore and his nasty henchman Fleshcreep played by Brian Capron (Coronation Street’s bad boy Richard Hillman), to win not only his fortune but also the hand of the Kings beautiful daughter. The whole production is complimented by lavish costumes and a sumptuous set and promises to be yet another spectacular success from producers UK Productions. It’s a giant of a pantomime…don’t miss it!

PAWNBROKERS, UNMARRIED GIRLS, ABERDEEN AND THIEVES: ALSO CHILDREN AND RUSSIA AND GREECE What have all these got in common? Well of course! Everyone knows! • • • • • • • • But if you’re the only one not to know, you need to be told that Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of all these groups of people. And even more groups could have been added: – sailors, merchants, chemists, perfume-makers, travellers, scholars – and, bringing up the rear, parish clerks! He’s patron saint of all of them! And of course Saint Nicholas is just another name for that wonderful old gentleman who’s coming down a chimney near you on Christmas Eve! Seriously speaking, Santa Claus – whose name of course derives from Saint Nicholas – was one of the most popular saints in Christendom, and the legends w hich on c e surr ound ed him ar e extraordinary. One of these legends tells how he brought three boys back to life after they’d been pickled in brine by a wicked inn-keeper to make meat pies. Another legend describes how he rescued three girls from a life of prostitution by giving each of them a bag of gold. These bags of gold are still remembered in the sign of three balls above pawnbrokers’ shops, and Nicholas’s generosity began our custom of giving gifts at Christmas. High-street shops should be grateful to him.

Yet another legend describes how he calmed the seas during a storm, and so helped to save sailors from shipwreck. He even managed to locate and save a golden cup which had been lost overboard. Nothing was too difficult for him! In fact, all the legends described above are carved on the fascinating 11th century square font in Winchester Cathedral. It’s made of black marble coming from present-day Belgium, and when you are next in Winchester, it’s well worth spending time looking really closely at the carvings on two of its four sides. But, stripping away the somewhat fanciful legends, who was the man behind the saint? Who was the real Nicholas? In a nutshell, he was a 4th century Turkish bishop who lived in Myra. In 1087, after a tussle with the Muslims, his bones were taken off for safety to Bari, on the south eastern coast of Italy – near where the ‘ankle’ might be said to be located. Here a big church was built for him and his remains were buried in its crypt - and he lies there still. His legends were so numerous, and his miracles so famous that Bari began to attract thousands of pilgrims. His fame then quickly spread all over Europe, churches were dedicated to him and artists depicted him everywhere.

Early Dutch settlers took the St Nicholas cult to America, and then in the nineteenth century the Americans exported him back to Europe, but this time he was confusingly mixed up with various Nordic legends, wearing a red coat and accompanied by reindeer. But seriously, any child will tell you he now lives in Lapland. David Hilliam • • • • • • • •
