Dear Neighbours, A Very Happy New Year to You! We had a great Christmas with my Mum and Edition 53 Dad who, despite the snow made it all the way from Hull to stay with us. Hayden pleaded with Grandma to drive down here which really did help her make the decision to set off. All was fine with a “good run” as my Dad would say. Hayden was very good and woke up at his usual 8am Christmas morning so we were all able to enjoy the day Published by: and not sleep through it! Mayor’s goodwill parcels make it through the snow Christchurch scouts, guides and brownies struggled through the snow and ice to help the Mayor, Cllr Nick Geary, deliver Christmas goodwill parcels. The Mayor's Goodwill Fund has had a record year and 71 grocery parcels, 44 boxes of sweets and 25 potted plants were delivered to the Borough's needy or lonely residents. The Mayor, who joined in the mammoth delivery effort, said: "I would like to thank everyone

involved in this fantastic cause and in particular the Borough’s scouts, guides and brownies for generously volunteering their Sunday to join me in delivering these goods. “I know that each and every one is appreciated, and we have already received numerous calls and letters of thanks." Christchurch Mayor, Cllr Nick Geary, with some of the volunteers helping to deliver the goodwill parcels around the Borough

Talking about wildlife with

Spectacular Starlings Gregarious and widespread, starlings are one of the most common British garden birds. Smaller than blackbirds, their plumage is glossy with iridescent green and purple in the summer, turning darker in the winter, with white speckles. On the ground, they walk with a curious waddle, but their flight is fast and direct, aided by the pointed, triangular wings. The female and the male are almost indistinguishable. Starlings are omnivorous, happy to eat almost anything from a variety of fruits, seeds and insects to worms and kitchen scraps. Assisted by the female, the male builds the grass nest in a cavity of a tree, wall or a building. Normally one brood is produced in April or May, consisting on average of four to seven glossy, pale blue eggs. The fledglings leave the nest at three weeks of age. Autumn sees the arrival of hundreds of thousands of migrants from Scandinavia and Eastern Europe, here to overwinter in large communal flocks consisting of thousands of birds. Returning to their roosts at dusk, starlings provide a spectacular sight in the sky by performing complex aerial acrobatics, known as murmurations. The reason for this behaviour has mystified biologists for centuries, but it is generally believed that by flocking together in this manner, they aim to protect themselves from predators such as hawks and peregrine falcons. Despite their widespread presence in Britain, starling numbers have declined in recent times by about 70 per cent

CD January 2011 page 10

and they are now a Red List species of conservation concern. Look out for roosting flocks over reed beds, for example on the edge of Poole Harbour, but other plants will do as a substitute. Last winter a flock roosted in a large clump of bamboo in Corfe Mullen, which was subsequently cut down. If you are lucky enough to have starlings roosting on or near your land, enjoy one of nature’s spectacles while it lasts as the birds will disperse in the spring. Beauty and the Beast At Regent Centre, Christchurch from 22nd – 29th January 2011 Marking their 40th anniversary in 2011, the awardwinning Highcliffe Charity Players present their first production for 15 years of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, running over ten performances at the Regent Centre, Christchurch, from 22nd to 29th January 2011. Latterly well know through Disney’s animated film and stage musical, this classic fairytale tells of a kindly monster (in reality a transformed handsome prince) and his love for a beautiful young girl. But David Swan’s imaginative script offers a delicious new twist to this enchanting story. Set firmly in ‘panto land’, there’s a magical Fairy, traditional Dame, good and evil Princes and even two dimwitted traffic wardens, Nosey Parker and Kirby Crawler. Not forgetting Gigi, the pantomime horse. HCP’s Beauty and the Beast once again showcases the Company’s celebrated panto ingredients sumptuous sets and costumes and great song and dance routines, combined with the usual happy quota of knockabout humour and audience participation. Directing her first panto is HCP member Shelley Gould, who has teamed up with Cara Bowen, an American professional performer/choreographer/ teacher who is making her panto choreographic debut. 16-year-old Coral Norton takes on her first principal role as Bonnie (Beauty) and former ballroom and Latin champion 20-year-old Lee McGowan, makes his HCP debut as the good Prince Casper, (turned into the Beast). Playing Dame for the first time is David Coward, while another company stalwart, Malcolm George, plays the bad Prince Jasper.

and other local parents. Our first show, Robinson Crusoe, was staged at St. Mark’s Hall in Highcliffe in 1972. By 1986, our growing audiences demanded a bigger venue and we moved to the Regent Centre, where we have happily appeared every year since. “Charity Players have now performed over 70 productions, including most of the major pantomimes, acclaimed musicals (recently Mack & Mabel) and a string of entertaining revues. I am proud that, thanks to the wonderful support of our audiences, we have been able to raise tens of thousands of pounds for local charities”. Beauty and the Beast runs at the Regent Centre for ten performances from Saturday 22nd to Saturday 29th January 2011 – including three matinees and two popular Teatime Shows (at 5.30pm) when audiences can meet the cast after the performance. As usual, profits from the show will be donated to charity. Tickets (£8 -12) are on sale both at the Regent Centre Box Office (01202 499199) and online: www.regentcentre.co.uk/panto. For further information: www.highcliffecharityplayers.com.

Pete Whitaker, Kim Doyle and Jane Melling are Widow Bonbon’s kids Sherbet, Candy and Flossy, Stephen Hutt and Paul Beecroft play the dopey traffic wardens, Marcus White is Bonnie’s father Dr Tootle and Valerie Gillard is Fairy Rosé. “It’s wonderful that we celebrate our 40th anniversary in the same year that the Regent Centre - where we have presented pantos and musicals for the past 25 years - celebrates its 80th anniversary”, says HCP Chairman, Georgina Smith. “Charity Players was formed in 1971 by my late father-in-law Tony Smith (HCP’s renowned Dame for 25 years)

January’s Gardening Tips From Paul Chatfield of Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services Happy New Year! Fruit Pruning and spraying are the main Trees and Shrubs Trees and shrubs can still be planted, however be careful with the roots when moving and try not to disturb too much soil, also none frosty conditions.

Climbers and Wall-Plants In severe weather conditions some protection may be needed, cut back over crowding shoots and renew ties if necessary.

Roses Support roses over the winter to save from damage, leaves should be cleared up, healthy ones can be composted and diseased ones burnt.

Borders and Beds Preparation of beds should be done now for planting, if conditions are good. Annual weeds can be buried beneath the surface, perennial weeds dug out & burnt.

Bulbs and Corms As the earliest bulbs come to the surface, the soil may benefit from a light fork over. This is to break any hard capped soil to let air in.

operations to be carried out now, this must be completed as soon as possible, weather permitting.

Vegetables Most important is to complete digging on vacant ground. Find out what manures etc. are needed for different crops.

Greenhouse and Frame Some propagation work can be done from cuttings as the varieties become available. Some tuberous varieties can be started in moist peat.

House Plants Flowering ones need all the light possible, keep them out of drafts. Don’t over water while growth is slow.

Rock Gardens and Pools There is very little to be done except clearing and cleaning away of fallen leaves and debris which may spoil flowers & water purity.

Lawns Although it is advisable to stay off the lawns some work can be done during mild spells. Raking over worm casts and raking out moss, also remove last leaves.

The Onset of Winter The Autumn hues have left the trees As Winters chill winds blow But Winter has a surprise in store As from the clouds comes snow The biting winds that oftimes give A feeling of despair Do have a purpose at this time As leaves form layer on layer With the gentle fall of snowflakes Forming a blanket on the ground So nature protects its life cycle With warmth for life underground Wildlife is no stranger to hard times; Some gather food and hibernate They save their strength ‘till another day And, for the present, wait And so we learn from Natures lesson That we should keep warm Not only in a physical way But in friendships, free from harm Winter makes us ever aware Of potential times of hardship So we should strive to see the good In life, and be forever positive

WAGGY TAILS RESCUE, is a registered charity based in Ferndown. They rescue and re-home dogs that have been abandoned, neglected or otherwise in need of a good home. Special Sam Sam is about 5 years old but has had little input so needs an experienced collie owner. He needs lots of exercise and stimulation, as he likes to be with someone doing something. He would make a good companion for someone who works outside and/or likes to walk. He has not been socialised much so far so a home of his own would be better for him. He is very affectionate but big and bouncy so no young children.

IF YOU WANT TO SUPPORT WAGGY TAILS AND CAN’T AFFORD TO DONATE… GIVE YOUR TIME INSTEAD! If you have a few hours to spare – come and join a very friendly team and have lots of fun at the same time as doing something worthwhile. We particularly need help in our three shops, (Parkstone and West Moors) so retail experience and outgoing personality would be appreciated. Lots of different jobs (unpaid) available, so phone us on 01202 875000 and tell us what you are good at!
