Happy New Year Christchurch, Highcliffe, Mudeford & Burton! We hade a great Christmas with my Mum and Dad here, having travelled from Hull in the North. Hayden had his first early Christmas, coming into our room at a wonderful 4:15am... Oh dear... He said something very funny just before Christmas, ”You know Mummy some people think that Santa is their PARENTS! I know it is definitely NOT you two… because you like…” and then he started snoring! With a wry smile I politely agreed that I liked my sleep… I guess we cannot travel the planet as we are too lazy! I am sure you have stories yourselves of similar comments. Please do send some in and we can publish them to make us all smile. There is a little joke about Santa inside… the ladies will find it funny, and the men may smile too! The Christchurch Directory has had a very good year. Stephen and I would like to thank you for your support, especially that given to all of our advertisers. Many of our clients inside have also had a good year and this is very often down to the calls they get from you. A big “Thankyou” from the advertisers too! Again this month we have lots of ‘old’ and ‘new’ businesses. One new business is the chimney sweep - I like new categories. Please do give him or any of our advertisers a call and get them to help you in the house,, or go out and treat yourself to their services. It is a win win situation. They are here for you. Stephen and I wish you All the Very Best for 2012. Let’s make this a really good one! Warm Regards,

Talking about wildlife with

Water Voles The water vole is the largest type of vole. When fully grown, its body reaches a length of between 14cm and 22cm, with a tail length of between 9.5cm and 14cm. They have chestnut-brown fur, which means they are sometimes mistaken for the brown rat hence ‘Ratty’ in The Wind in the Willows. However, this endangered critter can be distinguished from its relative. The water vole is identified by its short, blunt nose, its long hair-covered tail, and small, rounded ears, which lie nestled within their fur. The water vole’s ideal habitat consists of a slow moving body of water - a ditch, river, l a k e o r po nd - s ur r o un d ed by l us h vegetation. Banks of reeds and grass provide the water vole with protection and are intertwined by these strong swimmers to create extensive burrows. These contain chambers which are used to store food and build nests, and are built on numerous floor levels to guard against flooding. Unfortunately, these intricate waterline burrows do not stop the invasion of predators. Entire colonies of wa t er v o l es hav e bee n destroyed by the non-native American mink, an active predator which is small enough to fit through the n a r r o w e nt r a n c es . T hi s indiscriminate hunter poses a s er i o us t hr e a t t o t h e survival of the water vole.

suffered a 95% decline in their population range since 1960 and recent surveys on the River Allen in east Dorset have found a worrying decline in the population there. Work is already underway to target the threat of the American mink; volunteers have been trained to look out for otters, which are crucial in driving this species away. However, predators are not the only cause of this decline. The water vole is also threatened by alien plants, such as the Himalayan Balsam, and the destruction of various habitats, a side effect of common agricultural techniques such as heavy grazing. You can help by reporting any sightings of water voles or mink to Dorset Wildlife Trust by phone on 01202 692033 or by email at abroom@dorsetwildlifetrust.org.uk. For more information, visit the website at dorsetwildlifetrust.org/dorsetwildrivers.

Business Christmas Get Together Twas a dark and stormy December night‌ Well, perhaps we should have booked better weather for our first Dorset Publications Business Get Together! That said, Debbie and I welcomed those who braved the elements. A group of our clients and business partners gathered together for an evening of fun, facts and festivities that was aimed at bringing people together and getting them talking to each other. The Bournemouth International Hotel ballroom was all decked out in full Christmas regalia and with a free glass of wine or coffee on arrival together with the plentiful finger buffet, everyone was soon getting into the spirit of it all! A good friend of ours, who goes by the stage name of Amarantha got the evening off to a hip-swinging start with a dazzling display of middle eastern bellydancing. Th i s wa s foll ow ed b y a b u sin e s s improvement presentation from Gary Stokes of Corecroft Business Services on

Amarantha takes to the floor

CD January 2012 page 10

Gary Stokes of Corecroft Business Services the subject of how to organise your business for success. Then the fun really started with a session of speed networking to get everyone talking to everyone else! Fast paced and active, there were some real surprises when people actually got to know each other better. After another shimmy-packed dance from Amarantha, we ended the evening off with a prize draw. The grand prize of a night for two at the Bankes Arms in Studland with taxi ride to Ocean Bay for a three course Champagne meal was won by Gary Finlayson of AIMS Accountants. Everyone said that they really enjoyed the evening, so we will be looking to have our second one some time in the spring!

Speed networking creating a real buzz

January’s Gardening Tips From Paul Chatfield of Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services Fruit

Happy New Year!

Trees and Shrubs Trees and shrubs can still be planted, however be careful with the roots when moving and try not to disturb too much soil, also none frosty conditions.

Climbers and Wall-Plants In severe weather conditions some protection may be needed, cut back over crowding shoots and renew ties if necessary.

Roses Support roses over the winter to save from damage, leaves should be cleared up, healthy ones can be composted and diseased ones burnt.

Borders and Beds Preparation of beds should be done now for planting, if conditions are good. Annual weeds can be buried beneath the surface, perennial weeds dug out & burnt.

Bulbs and Corms As the earliest bulbs come to the surface, the soil may benefit from a light fork over. This is to break any hard capped soil to let air in.

Pruning and spraying are the main operations to be carried out now, this must be completed as soon as possible, weather permitting.

Vegetables Most important is to complete digging on vacant ground. Find out what manures etc. are needed for different crops.

Greenhouse and Frame Some propagation work can be done from cuttings as the varieties become available. Some tuberous varieties can be started in moist peat.

House Plants Flowering ones need all the light possible, keep them out of drafts. Don’t over water while growth is slow.

Tel: 01590 682828 Mobile: 07821 610923

Rock Gardens and Pools There is very little to be done except clearing and cleaning away of fallen leaves and debris which may spoil flowers & water purity.

Lawns Although it is advisable to stay off the lawns some work can be done during mild spells. Raking over worm casts and raking out moss, also remove last leaves.

JACK AND THE BEANSTALK THE BOURNEMOUTH PAVILION PANTOMIME This year UK Productions brought you ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’, as the Bournemouth Pavilion Pantomime. We were lucky enough to get to see a performance and also talk to those prize winners who won tickets and saw the show. We followed the hilarious tale of the ups and downs of young Jack Trott played by Debra Stevenson (The Impressions Show & Coronation Street). Along with the other cast members, one of the highlights we all noticed was the quality of the singing. Right from the start we were all in the panto spirit. Especially when Jack’s less than bright brother Silly Billy played by CBeebies star and now Bournemouth panto favourite Chris Jarvis came along. The Good Fairy, Kate Weston from Wave 105, gave a great showing for local talent (together with her magical wave!) and Jack’s long-suffering mother Dame Trott was played absolutely hilariously by Nick Wilton who is better known as Mr Lister from EastEnders. The villain of the piece was the evil giant’s nasty henchman Fleshcreep played by Brian Capron (Coronation Street’s bad boy Richard Hillman). No one had a problem in booing every time he appeared on stage!

CD January 2012 page 26

Add all of that to the plentiful audience participation, including the rendition of “Moo-moo land” for the family cow, Daisy, that Jack had to rescue from the Giant, and a great time was had by all. According to our source at BH Live, tickets were bought in record numbers yet again, so let’s see what next year has to offer! Thank you to all those who took the effort to contact us with their comments.

Looking Backwards and Forwards A new month! A new year! – and as we begin the age-old sequence of months of the year again, we step into a name-tradition that goes back over two and a half thousand years! And the names are fascinating. Almost seven centuries before Christ, the very earliest Roman calendar had only ten months – and astonishingly they simply had a two-month namegap in the middle of winter. So to put things right, one of their ancient rulers, decided to add a couple of months – and he called them Januarius and Februarius. January, as we call it, was named after the old god of doors and beginnings. He had two faces: one looking forward and one looking backward. February, however, comes from a word meaning ‘purify’, because this was when the Romans practised religious rites of purification. However, even with these two new months, people still thought of the year beginning in March – and indeed we still do (almost) when we begin our financial year in April. The months were still chaotic even centuries later, so Julius Caesar decided to tidy everything up and made a superbly rational system with the days of each month going alternately 31 and 30, even including February. In this system, in leap years, February had just 29.

CD January 2012 page 28

In Julius Caesar’s time, July was still called ‘Quintilis’ (the ‘fifth month’) and August was still called ‘Sextilis’ (the ‘sixth month’) – but such was Caesar’s reputation that ‘Quintilis’ was quickly re-named ‘Julius’ – which became our ‘July’. Alas, Caesar’s neat system was to last only a very short time – because when his successor Augustus Caesar came along, he was so jealous of Julius that he arrogantly re-named ‘Sextilis’ after himself! Worse still, he insisted that ‘August’ – his month – should have 31 days, to equal that of July. Predictably, this threw the whole year into chaos again, and we’ve lived with it ever since! Poor February was robbed of its full quota! In parts of northern Europe, untouched by Rome, the months had much more picturesque names. The old Saxons called January ‘Wulfmonath’ because this was when ravenous wolves would be likely to raid their villages. February was ‘Sprout-kale’, when cabbages would sprout. March was ‘Hlyd-monath’ because of its storms. April was ‘Eostur-monath’ after the goddess of fertility. May was ‘Thromilchi’, when cows could be milked three times a day. June was called ‘Litha’ (but nobody knows why!).

Monday, January 02, 2012 18:14 Black Magenta Yellow Cyan
