Dear Poole Residents! Wow what fantastic weather we have had for this time of year! The beaches were packed...in October! I am sure it will all get a bit cooler now, but I have to say I like the changing seasons, changing the clothes in the wardrobe and curling up by the fire with a good movie. Then having the summer... whenever it happens these days... to look forward to. We have just had a very busy weekend putting the magazines together and in between making an air raid shelter with our 7 year old son for a project at school! The whole class is really enjoying this topic and learning a lot. Hayden was horrified at the prospect of being evacuated and is fascinated with the ‘real story’ of a girl this happened to. “It really happened Mummy!” he exclaimed, “I wouldn’t like that!” I think he appreciates his ’luxury lifestyle’ of DS, Xbox, TV and Wii a little more now! So, back to the house and all that needs to be done...maybe it is time for the plumbing to be checked before the winter months settle in, a new carpet to impress the in-laws, a loft conversion to give you more space, new kitchen doors or maybe you want to give up smoking? Here in The Poole Directory we have all manner of businesses and tradespeople to help you. They are all local to you so do give them a call. These calls are really appreciated and make all the difference. The lucky winner of the Mantovani DVD and two tickets for the performance is Mr R Turgoose who is also, like myself, from Hull too! This month the prize is a lovely hamper. Good luck with that and have a great month of October! Best Wishes,

Debbie

101 Non-Emergency Number Goes Live in Dorset The new 101 police non-emergency telephone number went live on Monday 19th September 2011. Members of the public in Dorset must now ring 101 to contact Dorset Police for non-urgent enquiries. The new 1 0 1 num be r has re place d the previous non-emergency police number in Dorset of 01202 or 01305 222222. This new non-emergency number has gone live across all of the police forces in the south west and the 101 number is due to be available in all police force areas of England and Wales by the end of January 2012. Chief Superintendent Colin Searle, Communications and Contact Services Commander, said: “The new 101 police non-emergency telephone number is easy to remember and will be live across the whole country next year. “It is important that the public in Dorset know what they must dial 101 to contact police in Dorset for nonurgent business from now on. “The public should call 101 to report crime, to contact their local Safer Neighbourhood Team, to provide us with information about crimes that have been committed or to make a general enquiry.

PD October 2011 page 6

“As ever, people should always dial 999 in an emergency — when life is in danger or a crime is in progress.” Calls to the 101 non-emergency number — from both landlines and mobile phones — cost 15 pence each call no matter what time of day you call, or how long you are on the phone.

Best of British Butcher Booms Having been in the butcher trade for more than 30 years, Steve Whitemore and his wife Jackie have recently expanded their business to include new premises in Branksome on Poole Road.

They are keen to bring this knowledge and level of service to the new premises in Poole and look forward to providing local residents there with meat, poultry, pies and other locally sourced produce.

As a master butcher, quality is key and knowledge about the type of meat and where it came from is one of the differences that Steve and Jackie offer over and above the bigger chains.

Jackie said: “We have learned a lot about our customers in such a short time. They come in and talk — it is a big community thing. I’m sure this will continue at the new shop.”

“There are stores like Morrisons for example, who have their own in-house butchers, but many other supermarkets employ workers on their butcher counters who are not trained butchers. It is that knowledge, that one-to-one service, we offer.” With the popularity of cookery programmes on television and some bad press regarding supermarkets, Steve & Jackie are reporting an increase in trade at the Southbourne branch.

Does your IT value your business enough? Many companies under value the importance of their IT for a number of reasons. They either don’t have an an appointed person who’s dealing with ‘IT’ in the broadest sense without any real understanding of the bigger picture or no knowledge of exactly how to manage your IT and understand the businesses IT requirements, or simply the in-house 'tech' is overworked with fire fighting issues and no capacity to look at the business aspects. It’s common and ‘best practice’ to have an IT ‘road map’ and company IT policy which details a strategy which details which direction you’re headed and how to address every day issues like desktop support, hardware procurement, networking and infrastructure needs, backup and recovery and identifying how important your IT systems are towards the every day

October’s Gardening Tips From Paul Chatfield of Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services Always give your plants good thoughts!

Trees and Shrubs Planting of evergreens including conifers should be completed early this month. Plus prepare for deciduous trees and shrubs.

Climbers and Wall-Plants Prepare all climbers and wall plants by tying in long shoots and make sure they are secure. Examine all old supports change if needed.

Roses Shrubs, ramblers and climbers need to be firmly secure to prevent them from whipping about in the autumn winds and becoming damaged.

Borders and Beds All the summer bedding plants should be cleared by now. The space left can be planted with cheerful spring wall flowers, polyanthus and garden primroses all available in bright colours.

Bulbs and Corms If ground is in a workable condition finish the planting of lilies early this month. Where drainage is needed plant them on a layer of sharp sand.

Rock Gardens and Pools

Fruit If strawberries were not planted earlier there is still time, complete pruning of currants and gooseberries. New plants can be propagated from old wood.

Vegetables A start may be made with digging vacant ground, so it has as long as possible to weather during the winter, ready for raking down next spring.

Greenhouse and Frame An important task this month is removal of dirt and any shading that was painted or sprayed on the glass to give as much light as possible ready for spring.

House Plants As daylight decreases, light through the window is considerably reduced. Light loving plants would need to be moved accordingly. Remember to water less, just keep damp. Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services North 2, Sway Storage & Workshops Barrows Lane, Sway, Lymington Hants, SO41 6DD

Tel: 01590 682828 Mobile: 07821 610923

Gather up falling leaves to stop decay. Any other debris remove from pools before they decay and foul the water, which is harmful to plant life and fish.

Lawns Raise height of cut on lawns to no less than 2 inches. This stops the light getting to the ground which encourages moss growth. Patch if haven’t already.

The Countdown has begun... Insulation grants are coming to an end! Dorset Energy Advice Centre (DEAC) is a not for profit company which works with all 8 local authorities and Dorset County Council to promote the benefits of saving energy in the home and workplace. DEAC has most enquiries from the general public on home insulation and the grants available to help install these works. From autumn next year the Government is planning to abolish the grants and subsidies for home insulation and replace them with a householder loan scheme called ‘The Green Deal’. The Green Deal will be a loan which stays on the electricity bill, and is paid back at just under the rate of the savings made as a result of the measures being installed. The likely interest rate could be around 7-8% and there will probably be a cost to the survey of anything from £200-£500. DEAC are urging all Dorset residents to take advantage of insulation grants now, while they

are either free or heavily subsidised. This will ensure the full benefit of any savings on the fuel bills are made and not used to offset a loan. A loan on your property may make it harder to sell in the future. There are many grants that DEAC administer for the Councils and there are soon to be some new schemes which are specific to certain areas. If you would like to find out which type of grant you qualify for, or for any other energy saving advice please call: 0800 975 0166 Or Email: info@deac.co.uk Web: www.deac.co.uk

The countdown has begun! DEAC have assisted over 80,000 households in Dorset with home insulation grants. We also advise householders on all energy saving matters Please note the insulation is free up to a maximum area for the property type and is subject to a free survey.
