Low-cost tips to transform your garden in time for the spring... Is your garden looking very muddy or untidy or perhaps you’re looking for a more maintenance-free area to relax in when the weather improves? Local stone merchant Suttles has the answer! With its array of shingle, decorative stone chippings or wood chippings, you can transform your garden from as little as £29 per tonne. Director Joe Paine explains “recycled woodland mulch can be laid on top of your soil in your borders, which not only looks great but also suppresses weeds and deters slugs and snails. Or, if you’re looking to lay down a pathway through your garden or an area to sit out in, all that is required is a roller or plate compactor, a wheelbarrow, a shovel, some geotextile and some gravel or shingle (we have plenty in our range to choose from!). Whilst the ground is being prepared, you can put the excavated material into bags, which Suttles can easily pick up for you. Suttles can also deliver the shingle or other aggregate at the same time to make life a whole lot

Talking about wildlife with
Heathlands wake up for spring As many species start making an appearance after the winter, spring is a good time to enjoy nature walks on the heaths. Dorset heathlands are amongst the most important in the country, providing a unique habitat year round for many rare and threatened species of wildlife. With the longer days of spring, reptiles emerge to bask in the sun. All six British reptiles – sand lizard, common lizard, smooth snake, adder, grass snake and slow worm - can be found on the Dorset heaths. Smooth snake and sand lizard are rare heathland specialists, the rarest snake and lizard in Britain and relying on heaths for their survival. The best time to see the elusive sand lizard is in April, when the males turn a stunning green for a short period of time to attract a mate. Of all the British reptiles, only the adder is poisonous, but they are shy and will try to avoid you. You are lucky if you get to admire one curled up to bask in the sun.
be found in the springtime as well. The ex ot i c a nd co l o urf u l w asp sp id er emerges in April, as does the green tiger beetle. Heaths also contain more spider species than any other habitat in Britain and the heathland ponds and bogs are good for dragonflies. Heathlands are of great environmental and historical value, but have become much reduced and fragmented in the last few decades. To help preserve this unique environment and its vulnerable wildlife, keep to the paths, clear up after your dog and keep him on a lead from February to August. Follow the heathland code at w w w . d o r s e t w i ld l i f e tr us t . o r g. u k / heathlandcode. Heathland Visitor: Dartford Warbler

Rare birds such as woodlarks and Dartford warblers are characteristic of heaths, and can be seen flitting amongst heather and gorse. From late February on, some will be building their nests on or near the ground, so make sure to stay on designated paths in order to avoid disturbing them and that goes for your dog too. Nightjars arrive from Africa any time from April and are similarly vulnerable, another reason why dogs have by law to be under close control during the breeding season. Representatives of the insect world can

Refugees in Poole and Bournemouth The last 15 years has seen much war in different parts of the world; and people fleeing war and persecution means refugees. The countries that do the most to support refugees are among the poorest in the world (Chad, Tanzania, Zambia, Pakistan); but some flee west, some of these come to the UK, and a small number end up in Bournemouth or Poole – a thousand or so in the last ten years, mainly from Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq and Zimbabwe. Having lost everything, they begin to rebuild their lives – which means asylum claims, housing, language, work, all conducted in a strange language and culture. International Care Network (ICN) is the local refugee support charity, based in Bournemouth for the past ten or twelve years. It has provided advice and support for refugees at every stage of the integration journey, from first arrival to achieving British Citizenship and beyond; and help for those who fall off the ladder on the way, usually by being refused asylum – which then removes all right to work or benefits. The Swanage connection: one member of ICN staff and one regular ICN volunteer are Swanage residents. And, over the past 18 months, the churches in Swanage have
SO March 2011 page 10
organized a food bank for destitute refugees, with collection points in the church buildings and at The Old Stable in Commercial Road. Destitution comes mostly when an asylum claim is refused because the person has been unable to demonstrate conclusively that they are likely to be persecuted if they return home. Yet many are afraid enough that they would rather live on the margins of society here – getting help from friends, maybe a little illegal and low-paid work – than return home. Others are destitute when they may have an entitlement to benefits – but it takes many weeks from a claim being made to payment actually beginning. So the food bank is enormously helpful to a small number of Zimbabweans (mostly in families) and Iranians (mostly single men), plus one or two others. ICN wants to say thank you to everyone in Swanage who has contributed to the food bank; and to encourage you to keep the food coming! There is a list at The Old Stable, but any non-perishables are very welcome, as are toiletries. We can cope with some semi-perishables (e.g. fruit and veg that doesn’t need refrigeration). Thank you! James Davies

5 Secrets To Growing Beautiful Roses A rose is a rose is a rose - and there are few things in the garden more beautiful. There are 5 secrets I want to share that will help you to grow healthy roses. 1. Sunshine: Plan to put your rose bush in a spot where it will get as much sun at least 6 hours of sunshine a day. 2. Water: Drops of water on the leaves can cause burning, and lead to black spot disease so always water from underneath, soaking the earth until it is damp but not soggy. It is better to water thoroughly once a week than lightly several times in the same period.
mix 1 tbs of baking soda with 1 tbs of liquid dish soap and 4 litres of water together and spray your Rose leaves. 5. Prune: Always prune 1/4" above an outward facing bud. Always use a sharp knife or hand pruners. Never prune in autumn. Always cut off the suckers, they grow just below the bud union; follow them down to where they begin and carefully remove them to encourage strong new growth. Rose s are cla ssif ied i nto type s according to ancestry, bush type, and flower form and size - ask at your local nursery for the type you prefer. By Abigail Baker
Beware if your Roses get too much water, they'll drown. Water in the morning or at least four or five hours before dusk so that any excess moisture can be absorbed by the heat of the day. 3. Planting & Soil: As soon as the ground can be worked in the Spring, turn the soil to the depth of the spade. To the loosened soil add 1/3 to 1/2 as much again of composted humus like leaf mold, peat moss, or composted manure, together with coarse sand. Make sure to work the soil at least a month before planting. 4. Tidy, Tidy: Keep Roses healthy, it is important to gather up withered petals and leaves and pick off any live leaves with black spots. Prevent black spot -

The Purbeck Association of The National Trust What town is served by Hurn Airport? Easy enough – almost everybody reading this will know that it’s Bournemouth. But which politician claims to have auditioned for the role in National Velvet that was eventually played by Elizabeth Taylor? * These were questions from our annual lunchtime Fish & Chips Quiz in February. It’s a light-hearted event, strictly for fun. For the second year running we ended with an exciting tie-breaker after two teams finished level at the end of the main quiz. Each year the winning team members get nothing more than a beautiful hand-crafted certificate (provided I remember to print them on the morning of the quiz). The picture shows our winners. Along with our programme of outings and talks we run several social events like this. At £8 for a fish & chip lunch with tea/coffee and a couple of hours of entertainment it’s great value. Our annual membership also remains great value at only £5, or £7.50 for a couple. If you’d like to get more out of your own National Trust membership (or your status as a Trust Volunteer) by joining us, call Membership Secretary Jay Burke on 423775 or see our website www.purbecknt.org.uk. *It was Shirley Williams if you really want to know.

BBC1’S Antiques Roadshow To V isit Lulworth Castle Lulworth Castle is delighted to announce that BBC ONE’s ever popular Sunday evening programme ANTIQUES ROADSHOW will be filming for its 34th series at Lulworth Castle, on Thursday, 2nd June, 2011. The doors open at 9.30 am and close at 4.30pm. Entry to the show is free. This will be presenter Fiona Bruce’s fourth year with the Roadshow and she says, “Presenting the Antiques Roadshow is, for me, one of those rare and very lucky coincidences in television when you get to work on a show that you already love to watch. Exploring the human story behind every object is what makes Antiques Roadshow so fascinating. And everyone loves the agony and ecstasy of the 'what's it worth? moment. The AR isn't just about antiques - it's history, beauty and drama all wrapped up in one.' Some of Britain’s leading antiques and fine arts specialists will be on hand to offer free advice and valuations to visitors, who are invited to raid their attics and bring along their family heirlooms, household treasures and car boot bargains for inspection by the experts. James Weld, Lulworth Estate General Manager said “We are thrilled to welcome the much loved Antiques Roadshow to the beautiful setting of Lulworth Castle in Dorset, for one of this years venue selections. It is such a prestigious and hugely popular programme, which has been on our television screens for over 30 years, so it will be very interesting to see what the residents of Dorset will bring along! It will most certainly get everyone rummaging around for their hidden family treasures!” The last series, watched by an average of six million viewers, included some great finds such as an Egyptian stone head dug up in a garden worth £10,000, a medieval ring found

on a farm and valued at £20,000 and a Meissen cup and saucer bought at a car boot sale for £2.50 which was worth £5,000. Among some of the stranger items brought along were uneaten pieces of Royal wedding cake and a life-sized stuffed lion once used in a TV series. People with large pieces of furniture or other big items can send details and photographs of their objects to: ANTIQUES ROADSHOW, BBC, Whiteladies Road, Bristol, BS8 2LR or e-mail them to: antiques.roadshow@bbc.co.uk. It may be possible to arrange to look at the item in advance and organise transportation to the venue. Series Editor Simon Shaw says: “The team are all looking forward to visiting Dorset. It’s always exciting to see what will come to light on the day. We regularly see between 1500 and 2000 visitors on the day. Despite the high turnout everyone will get to see an expert.” More information can be found at: www.bbc.co.uk/antiquesroadshow
