Dear Brockenhurst! I hope you all had a great summer. I have to say for me it passed extremely quickly. Hayden had a fabulous time at Grandma’s going on boat trips, helping in the garden, visiting friends. It is all back to school now and a whole new year ahead. With that in mind do you need some extra help in the house, clearing the garden, fitting a new kitchen...? There are many jobs which seem never ending, but with some expert help, it is all so much easier. As always we have many local trades people here in The Brockenhurst Guide. Steve and I value the support you give to them, it certainly makes our job very worth while and satisfying. Please continue to use our local businesses. There are also some local events coming up with the New Forest Art Society, Princess Ida s h o w i n g a t T h e Re g e n t ' s Ce n t r e i n Christchurch, Brockenhurst Cinema and the Hospice 10K Run. All are listed in the index. Please do attend where you can. If you have a business and want to be promoted, have a story to tell or an event to publicise, please let us know! Steve, Hayden and myself wish you a great September. Best Wishes,

Debbie

Moors Valley achieves accreditation status Moors Valley Country Park and Forest has been recognised as one of the best in the country after passing the national Country Park Accreditation Scheme. The award means that visitors to Moors Valley can be sure of benefitting from the core services and facilities expected of Country Parks. The ac creditati on s uc ce ss follow s assessment by Natural England, the Government’s adviser on the natural environment, who run the Country Parks Accreditation Scheme. Moors Valley’s application for the status was easily approved after they fully satisfied the Scheme’s criteria, which has been recently updated to reflect the role of country parks today. Criteria include the Park providing a visitor centre and promoting a programme of activities and events that promote healthy living and environmental awareness.

Nick Tucker, Head of Recreation and Community Engagement for the Forestry Commission said, “I am delighted that Moors Valley Country Park has received this accreditation. This award is a fantastic endorsement of the 25 years of partnership management of Moors Valley Country Park betw een the Forestry Commission and East Dorset District Co u n c i l. It r ef l e c t s t h e c o n si s t e nt commitment of staff over the past two decades in providing excellent service for the public and innovation in recreation and countryside management. Not all sites calling themselves country parks currently deliver all the core facilities and services expected of them, but we’re delighted that Moors Valley Country Park has been recognised for setting such a high standard.” Leaf rubbing on the Play Trail at Moors Valley Country Park

Wedding Day

by Shelma Vaughan

Today is the day I’ve planned for all my life - my wedding day. Mum and my four bridesmaids, dressed in lilac silk, have gone to church in the vintage Silver Ghost, which will be returning for me soon. Dad is pacing the patio. He is so nervous about his speech that he can’t sit still. I wonder how he’ll cope during the service. I can hear church bells ringing and think of Joel. We met on a blind date. I nearly didn’t go. I hate that sort of thing; all false chit-chat and wondering how soon you can leave. But it wasn’t like that with him. As soon as I gazed into his eyes I was in love. I know it sounds corny, but that’s how it was. Now, in quarter of an hour I’ll be walking down the aisle to become his wife. A knock at the front door heralds the return of the Rolls. Dad swings round mid-pace and sets off the answer it. The phone rings. ‘Can you get that love?’ he calls as he charges down the hall. ‘Hello?’ ‘Ellie?’ I freeze. A girl doesn’t expect to get a phone call from her fiancee at this stage in the proceedings. ‘Joel, what’s wrong?’ ‘I need to speak to you.’ ‘Can’t it wait until after the wedding?’ I hear him take a deep breath and feel a stab of panic. ‘That’s just it, Ellie, I can’t go through with it.’ My heart starts hammering. A pesky robin trills happily outside the window. I need to sit down, and grope for the nearest chair. ‘Ellie, are you still there?’ ‘What did you say?’ I ask through gritted teeth. ‘Ells, I’m not sure getting married is the right thing to do. I’m sorry darling.’ ‘It’s just nerves,’ I say feeling vaguely sick. ‘No Ellie, I’ve felt like this for ages.’ ‘And you choose to tell me now? You couldn’t have mentioned it before?’ I feel murderous and if that robin doesn’t shut up I’m going to wring it’s neck. Joel continued. ‘There never seemed to be the opportunity to talk.’ ‘So you decided to wait till our wedding day?’ ‘I couldn’t leave it any longer, could I? I don’t want to hurt you, Ellie, but…take care.’ Joel hangs up and I stare at the phone in shock. ‘Ellie, the car’s here,’ dad says as he enters the room. I try to focus on his face to understand what he’s saying, but I can’t. He strides across the room, drops down on his knees and puts his arm around me. ‘Ellie, what’s happened love?’ A hiccupping sob bursts out of me then a torrent of tears. Dad strokes my hair and kisses the top of my head. When the storm settles to shuddering breaths, I tell dad what has happened. ‘Now everyone’s at the church waiting and there’s not going to be a wedding,’ I wail. ‘Leave that to me,’ says dad. ‘You go and wash your face then make a cup of tea; we both need one.’

13 I drag myself to the bathroom, then to the kitchen. It’s better than doing nothing; I feel so numb it hurts. Time crawls by. Mum and the bridesmaids return. They help me take off my gown and veil. I curl up on the bed and nurse my pain. ***** ‘For goodness sake, Ellis, it’s been six months now. You need to sort out your stuff, sell the house and move on.’ Mum sounds exasperated. ‘I know, I’ll go round this afternoon and make a start. ‘Do you want any help?’ I shake my head, shuddering inwardly. It’s going to be traumatic enough emptying what should have been my marital home without mum trying to jolly me along. She looks relieved. ‘If you change your mind…’ We both know I won’t. I stand on the doorstep summoning up the courage to put my key in the lock. I haven’t heard from Joel since our almost wedding day, but preparing to sell the house we own together makes it all feel so final. Taking a deep breath I insert the key and open the door ‘I wondered if you were ever going to come in.’ I gaze at Joel, my mouth open. He looks tired and thin. ‘What are you doing here?’ Joel shuffles his feet. ‘Come into the kitchen. I’ll make a cup of tea and we’ll talk.’ Bemused, I close the door and follow him. There’s something surreal about watching him moving around our home. A feeling of desolation wells up inside me. ‘I’ve been living here,’ says Joel handing me my drink. ‘Why?’ He cradles his mug in his hands and gazes at it. ‘It reminds me of you.’ I stare at him, opening and shutting my mouth like a fish, bereft of speech. ‘I’ve missed you Ellie.’ ‘It was your decision.’ ‘I didn’t think I was ready for the commitment, but…I was wrong.’ ‘When did you come to that conclusion?’ I growl as six months’ anguish pulsates in my chest. He licks his lips. ‘When I realised how empty my life is when you’re not in it. I love you Ellie.’ His eyes are boring into me. I will not cry I tell myself and burst into tears. He comes to my side and slips his arms around me. I pound his chest with my fists. He captures my hands and kisses them. I lean on his chest and soak his t-shirt. Once I’ve calmed down we talk for hours and a glimmer of hope is born. ***** Today was my wedding day. It was better than I have ever planned because this time my focus was not on the ceremony, but on our future together.

September’s Gardening Tips From Paul Chatfield of Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services Always give your plants good thoughts! Fruit Planting of strawberries should be Trees and Shrubs A large number of evergreen shrubs can be propagated this month from stem cuttings made from the current season. First come first served for ordering plants.

Climbers and Wall-Plants Many container-grown plants are obtainable from nurseries and garden centres for planting out this month, while there is still some summer warmth, to help roots.

Roses Pruning of the ramblers and climbers which have finished flowering should be pruned early this month. This is so the new growth made during this season may be tied.

Borders and Beds If a new border is to be made you must get it dug now, to allow soil to settle for planting later in the autumn.

Bulbs and Corms Most spring flowering bulbs and corms can be planted now. If you wish to transplant lilies delay until the very end of the month or into October.

Rock Gardens and Pools This month is excellent for construction of rock gardens and pools, before severe weather sets in. Plants may be put in from pots with little disturbance to the roots.

Lawns Not so much mowing is needed now. Also the height of the mowing should be increased. September is also an ideal time for spiking lawns, removing thatch and reseeding.

completed as soon as possible while there is still warmth in the soil to assist rooting.

Vegetables Winter radish and turnips can be sown now. Gather all your remaining tomatoes and finish ripening in doors, the remaining plants if healthy put on the compost heap.

Greenhouse and Frame Towards the end of the month pot grown chrysanthemums with there flower buds well advanced should be placed in a cool, well ventilated house.

House Plants Any repotting that needs to be done should be attended to early this month before growth slows down, as it will soon get cold. Chatfield’s Garden & Property Services North 2, Sway Storage & Workshops Barrows Lane, Sway, Lymington Hants, SO41 6DD

WAGGY TAILS RESCUE, is a registered charity based in Ferndown. They rescue and re-home dogs that have been abandoned, neglected or otherwise in need of a good home.

Lovely Lottie Lottie is a dear little Boxer/Springer Spaniel cross, aged 8 months old. Sadly, when she was only a puppy she broke her leg and it did not set properly. One of her front legs is now slightly deformed, but she is not in any pain and zooms around like any youngster. As she grows stronger, it might improve. She has lots to learn but loves life and is very affectionate. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Ever since Panorama featured the plight of rescue dogs (in particular, Staffordshire Bull Terriers) and Battersea Dogs Home confessed to putting to sleep one third of the dogs they take in – every request received by Waggy Tails Rescue to rehome a dog has been prefaced by ‘Do you put healthy dogs to sleep?’ They want all our readers to know that the answer is a resounding ‘NO’! No healthy dog is ever put to sleep and every dog taken in is eventually rehomed… no matter how long it takes. However, they, like all the other rescues are inundated with requests to take in unwanted dogs. So please, please, please do NOT buy a puppy, especially if advertised on the Internet. It will only encourage unlicensed breeders to continue their irresponsible trade. There are so many lovely dogs needing new homes, wouldn’t it be more rewarding to know you have actually saved a life? Do look at their web site www.waggytails.org.uk to see just a few of the needy ones. For more information please contact their office on 01202 875000.
