Merry Christmas Ferndown and West Parley! I truly cannot believe that a whole year has passed by. Hayden, our son, had his 8th Birthday last week so we were extra busy with a family bowling trip to Tower Park, followed a few days later with a party at Snowtrax. Life is one big party at this age… I wonder why we change it? Maybe we should switch the TV off, forget the news, get the old fashion games out of the loft and actually talk to each other. Just an idea. Christmas is certainly a good time for families and we will definitely be playing board games as well as a few electronic ones to keep our youngest generation happy. I love it and I hope you do too. We have a full little magazine for you this month, so do take the time to look through. When calling any of the advertisers inside please mention The Ferndown & West Parley Directory. This makes all the difference. The lucky winner of the prize wordsearch and the family set of tickets for the Jack and the Beanstalk Pantomime at the Bournemouth Pavilion was L Morgan. Have a great night out! This month there is a Champagne Hamper for the winner, so good luck with that one! We also have an additional game… can you spot how many Father Christmas with Rudolf pictures there are hidden in the magazine?? There is a bottle of wine for the first person to send the correct answer in. See the form on page 35! Steve and I here at Dorset Publications wish you a really Happy Christmas and a Wonderful New Year. Whatever you do, keep smiling! All the Very Best,
Debbie

A Night to Remember Tanya Broome, a 12-year-old fundraiser from Ferndown has been inspired to try to make a difference. She presented a cheque for £4,700 to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Poole Hospital raised at her first event - the Diamonds are Forever Ball. Tanya said “my inspiration first came when I saw a photo of Lyla-Mae, the baby daughter of family friends Rebecca Williams and Earl Vaz. She had just been born nine weeks early weighing just 2lb 8oz and was being cared for at NICU. Lyla-Mae was totally reliant on incubators and specialist breathing equipment to ensure her survival and spent eight weeks being cared for by the fantastic staff on NICU.” Tanya, supported by family, friends and LylaMae’s parents decided to create the Preemie Babies group which aims to raise funds to purchase some of the equipment used on NICU to support babies born prematurely and their families. The group’s first ever fundraising event, the Diamonds are Forever Ball was held at the Premier Inn, Bournemouth on 15th October raising a fantastic £4,700. “I wanted to make a difference and liked the idea of a ball because it seemed like a really fun way to raise funds and I would be able to raise more than just the ticket price by holding an auction, raffle and by holding a heads and tails game. As well as my family and friends, Lyla-Mae’s Mum, Becky spent a massive amount of time and effort helping me set up and organise the ball.” I had a mixture of guests from family and friends come along to the ball. I advertised it through my mum’s hair salon, on the Preemie Babies website and facebook page. My school, Glenmoor, also got involved by holding a mufti day which raised £520.” Tanya presented a cheque for £4,700 to staff at NICU. Danny Lockyer, Charge Nurse on NICU thanked Tanya for the donation and said “we are thrilled to receive this donation which will
TFWPD December 2011 page 8
help to purchase some of the vital equipment for our tiny patients.” Tanya’s aim is to raise funds for equipment that will help to save the lives of premature babies and support their families whilst on the unit. “It was fantastic to raise so much at our first event. This is just the start, I am hoping to be able to raise enough money to buy an incubator which costs around £25,000.” Tanya has set up a fundraising group called Preemie Babies. “I hope Premmie Babies will become a recognisable brand dedicated to holding fundraising events in the future for NICU. We are looking for other families who would like to help us fundraise to join the group. I absolutely loved the ball, it gave people the chance to have a really great time whilst supporting a fantastic cause and I can’t wait for the next event. Please, Please, please help us to try and make a difference by supporting us.” Further information can be found on the website at www.preemiebabies.co.uk or search for preemiebabies on facebook.

Lights… Camera… Action! - Xmas Special Arts & Entertainment News Art4All is looking to create new Sound Sculpture to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee Plans are being drawn up to record the memories and personal reminiscences of local Ferndown people who have lived through the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. A team of media students from the Ferndown Upper School have volunteered to help research and identify a group of local elderly residents from diverse backgrounds and arrange to take photos and record brief interviews. By using the latest recording technology, we aim to capture interesting, entertaining and amusing recollections of key moments during the Queen's reign. The resulting material will be used to create an innovative new sound sculpture in Ferndown to mark the Diamond Jubilee in June 2012.
Fright Night in Ferndown Plenty of laughs and scares were in evidence at the Fright Night in Ferndown event held on 31st October. Over 300 people joined in the family-friendly fun and games in the KGV Pavilion and woods. A spooky candle lit trail led people past the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party and into an Enchanted Forest where drama students from Ferndown Upper School put on their scariest costumes to give the audience a real fright. The Witch’s Wardrobe proved a big hit for the little ones, with town librarian, Carol Freeman, reading scary stories surrounded by pumpkins and candle lights, dressed as an authentic local black witch.
TFWPD December 2011 page 14
The Ferndown and West Parley Rotary Clubs supported the event and served up a Smuggler’s BBQ which gave people the opportunity to relax, eat and enjoy a feast of bat wings and other tasty delights, whilst Cathy Lugg and a team of Town Councillors put on a fine selection of frighteningly good home-made cakes. The event was also supported by the Chamber of Commerce and a number of local businesses including The Ferndown and West Parley Directory, Sainsbury’s, Ferndown Electrics, Xerocad and Tescos, who kindly sponsored the prizes for the fancy dress competition. Several hundred pounds was raised for local charity. If you would like to nominate a local charity or good cause, contact the Ferndown Town Council by phone on 01202 892249. Chairman Gerry Clarke said afterwards, “We had a great fun evening and I must pay tribute to the drama students from the Ferndown Upper School, who put on an awesome show for the children as well as the Rotarians from Ferndown and West Parley Clubs who cooked up a first class BBQ and of course, the Town Council who agreed to underwrite the event. We are certainly looking forward to arranging another Fright Night next year!”

John Godber’s play makes the audience laugh, cry and laugh again, all in the space of seconds. Beware though, the play is more suited to an adult audience due to some of the language used! clapping “Honky Tonk Woman” which brought the house down and pleased the many Rolling Stones fans in the audience. This was just one of a wide variety of popular arts and entertainment events on at the Lighthouse over the coming months. The Winter programme is full of fun seasonal activities, ranging from a Christmas Carol concert by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, to some of the latest Hollywood block buster films for all the family, and of course, a traditional Pantomime “Cinderella” which is sure to be a big hit with the children. Christmas Season at Lighthouse in Poole On a recent moonlit night I took a trip to the Lighthouse in Poole for a journey down memory lane. On stage was Bill Wyman, the laid back rocker from the Rolling Stones with his illustrious band, the Rhythm Kings and guest singer, Mary Wilson, one of the original Supremes. What an eclectic mix of music! From the “Jitterbug Boogie”, a popular dance number from the early Rock and Roll era, to a string of Motown hits including the chart-topping, “Stop, in the Name of Love” plus soul ballads, such as “Stormy Weather”, sung as a duet with Mary and the band’s regular front man, Georgie Fame and an evocative rendering of the classic hit song from Norah Jones, “Come Away with me”. In addition there were plenty of Rhythm and Blues numbers from the swinging sixties and seventies, ending with the foot stomping, hand

Talking about wildlife with
Helping wildlife in your winter garden As many of our native species face losing their natural habitat or part of it, gardens have become of increasing importance to wildlife. Gardens in the UK form an area that is larger than nature reserves and national parks combined, and they can act as a bridge between urban areas and natural habitats. There are several easy but effective steps you can take to help wildlife in your garden. All wildlife needs food, water, shelter and places to breed in order to flourish, and even a small garden that provides all of these can make a big difference. A permanent water feature is essential, and although a pond is ideal, it is not always practical, and any source of water is better than none. Something as simple as an undisturbed pile of leaves or logs in the corner of your garden will provide a home for insects, frogs and small mammals like hibernating hedgehogs.
They may even be used by birds or mice for shelter over the winter. Although not much loved by gardeners, ivy is a good source of shelter and nectar for insects, and berries for birds over the winter months. By not tidying up your garden too much and leaving some seed heads of flowers and grasses, you will be doing many species a favour. Finally, by not using pesticides or slug pellets in your garden you will provide the best possible habitat for a variety of wildlife. For more wildlife gardening tips and how to enter the Big Wildlife Garden Competition, visit the website at www.dorsetwildlifetrust.org.uk/wg or ring 01305 264620.
Niina Silvennoinen Water is essential and an old stump or post is a good place for ivy without letting it take over your garden. Photo by Nicky Hoar
Planting a variety of nectar and pollen rich plants is vital and this is a great time to look at your garden and plan for next season; plants that flower at different times will ensure food throughout the year for different species, and a good mixed hedgerow will provide shelter and food for the winter. Now is a great time for hedge planting and for placing nest boxes for next spring.

PAWNBROKERS, UNMARRIED GIRLS, ABERDEEN AND THIEVES: ALSO CHILDREN AND RUSSIA AND GREECE What have all these got in common? Well of course! Everyone knows! • • • • • • • • But if you’re the only one not to know, you need to be told that Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of all these groups of people. And even more groups could have been added: – sailors, merchants, chemists, perfume-makers, travellers, scholars – and, bringing up the rear, parish clerks! He’s patron saint of all of them! And of course Saint Nicholas is just another name for that wonderful old gentleman who’s coming down a chimney near you on Christmas Eve! Seriously speaking, Santa Claus – whose name of course derives from Saint Nicholas – was one of the most popular saints in Christendom, and the legends w hich on c e surr ound ed him ar e extraordinary. One of these legends tells how he brought three boys back to life after they’d been pickled in brine by a wicked inn-keeper to make meat pies. Another legend describes how he rescued three girls from a life of prostitution by giving each of them a bag of gold. These bags of gold are still remembered in the sign of three balls above pawnbrokers’ shops, and Nicholas’s generosity began our custom of giving gifts at Christmas. High-street shops should be grateful to him.
TFWPD December 2011 page 22
Yet another legend describes how he calmed the seas during a storm, and so helped to save sailors from shipwreck. He even managed to locate and save a golden cup which had been lost overboard. Nothing was too difficult for him! In fact, all the legends described above are carved on the fascinating 11th century square font in Winchester Cathedral. It’s made of black marble coming from present-day Belgium, and when you are next in Winchester, it’s well worth spending time looking really closely at the carvings on two of its four sides. But, stripping away the somewhat fanciful legends, who was the man behind the saint? Who was the real Nicholas? In a nutshell, he was a 4th century Turkish bishop who lived in Myra. In 1087, after a tussle with the Muslims, his bones were taken off for safety to Bari, on the south eastern coast of Italy – near where the ‘ankle’ might be said to be located. Here a big church was built for him and his remains were buried in its crypt - and he lies there still. His legends were so numerous, and his miracles so famous that Bari began to attract thousands of pilgrims. His fame then quickly spread all over Europe, churches were dedicated to him and artists depicted him everywhere.

Local teen launches roller disco for Ferndown Thirteen year old Oli Fletcher of West Moors launched a brand new roller disco on 18th September this year at Ferndown Leisure Centre. The roller disco will operate every Sunday throughout the year. There will be two very different sessions. The first, running from 4.30 – 6pm is aimed at families, followed by a session with a minimum age of 12 which will have a more club/disco-style feel from 6.30pm – 8.30pm. The family session will be suitable for anyone from novice to advanced, providing a safe, fun environment to participate in something all together. “My parents have found that there are very few activities that they can join in with when they take us out – so this early session provides the ideal opportunity for an informal family outing with good music, disco lighting and games such as bulldog and basketball” comments Oli. “Whilst the parents can of course just watch, they will be actively encouraged to participate,” he adds. “Importantly there will be no minimum age for skaters – my 5 year old brother and sister have been skating since they were four, with relatively little effort they are now very impressive on their wheels.” The second session, geared towards teens and adults of all ages, will be a disco benefiting from fantastic music, up-to-date sound and lighting equipment, lasers, haze machines, ultra-violet effects and strobes – which will transform the sports hall into an atmospheric club venue. “My dad was and still is very into skating and is hoping that adults do come along to keep him company”. Oli, who attends Poole Grammar School, is a keen skater and music fan. He found that the local area did not really cater for skating and felt it would benefit from a disco on wheels. “We moved here from London three years ago, and whilst I love all that’s on offer here, there’s not much for kids my age to do.” says Oli. “I tried other local events but found them
TFWPD December 2011 page 28
to be quite limited. After some persuasion I managed to get my parents to invest in some great quality equipment so we could create that all-important atmosphere, playing a great range of music in a fantastic facility. The venue, Ferndown Leisure Centre, is fully supportive of the project. Andy Lovering, General Manager commented: “Oli’s Roller Disco is a great scheme, initiated by a young person in our community which will greatly benefit the area. The main sports hall here at Ferndown is the perfect location with its newly-resurfaced floor, and is big enough to accommodate a large skating audience”. You will need to bring your own skates, however we will have a limited stock of skates from The Skate Shop in Poole available to buy at the launch session at a discounted price. After the launch event Oli’s Roller Disco patrons can get a 10% discount via a downloadable voucher from their website www.olisrollerdisco.co.uk.

JACK AND THE BEANSTALK THE BOURNEMOUTH PAVILION PANTOMIME SATURDAY 3 DECEMBER 2011 – MONDAY 2 JANUARY 2012 After spectacularly breaking box office records with ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ in 2009, and following the overwhelming success of ‘Cinderella’ last year - UK Productions brings you a giant pro duc ti o n o f ‘ J a ck a nd th e Beanstalk’, this year’s Bournemouth Pavilion Pantomime. Make sure the whole family is full of beans this Christmas and follow the hilarious tale of the ups and downs of young Jack Trott played by Debra Stevenson (The Impressions Show & Coronation Street), the boy who manages to sell the family’s only valuable possession, Daisy the Cow, for a handful of beans (and they weren’t even Heinz!). He ends up having to climb a giant beanstalk into the clouds and a whole heap of trouble, to retrieve the cow and to try and impress the King. Jack is helped and hindered along the way by his less than bright brother Silly Billy played by CBeebies
TFWPD December 2011 page 36
star and Bournemouth panto favourite Chris Jarvis, the Good Fairy, Kate Weston from Wave 105, and his long-suffering mother Dame Trott played hilariously by one of the country’s top panto dames, Nick Wilton better known as Mr Lister from Eastenders. Join Jack on his quest to defeat the evil Giant Blunderbore and his nasty henchman Fleshcreep played by Brian Capron (Coronation Street’s bad boy Richard Hillman), to win not only his fortune but also the hand of the Kings beautiful daughter. The whole production is complimented by lavish costumes and a sumptuous set and promises to be yet another spectacular success from producers UK Productions. It’s a giant of a pantomime…don’t miss it!

Have a Happy AND sustainable Christmas at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest This year Moors Valley Country Park and Forest, near Ringwood, offers a sustainable ‘one stop shop’ for all your Christmas needs with everything from beautiful Christmas trees to sumptuous festive food available on site. You can even make your own festive gifts and cards and buy fantastic local crafts! The ever-popular Forestry Commission Christmas Tree Shop opens for business on Saturday 3 December. This year it’s one of only two Forestry Commission sites locally where you can pick up a real tree. Choose from a traditional Norway Spruce, or non-drop varieties such as Nordman Fir and Lodgepole Pine. Around 2,000 trees will be available ranging from just 4 foot to a massive 10 feet high. The Christmas Tree Shop opens from 10am to 4pm each day and there’s free parking for everyone who buys a tree.
Meet Father Christmas The jolly festive gentleman himself visits Moors Valley on 11 and 18 December when the Santa Special Steam Train takes a magical trip through the Park. All visitors to his grotto will receive a special gift as well as some welcome festive refreshments. Tickets, which must be booked in advance, cost £11 and include free parking. Also on 11 and 18 December, Park Rangers will be running Festive Fun Days when they moonlight as Santa’s elves helping visitors to make table decorations, Christmas wreaths, angels and other festive crafts to buy and take home, while Ferndown Brass Band will
TFWPD December 2011 page 42
help to get everyone in the Christmas mood. Money raised during Fun Days will go towards local conservation projects. Adults can light up Christmas at willowand-paper lantern making workshop on 16 December while Christmas Kids Corner from 19 – 23 December will feature face painting, crafts and lots more for younger members of the family. Youngsters (9-11 years of age) can expend some holiday energy cycling through the forest on a Yuletide Night Ride on 20 December while kids and parents alike can exercise their intellectual abilities with the annual festive quiz which runs from 26 December to 2 January. Seasons Restaurant offers Christmas lunches (Monday – Fridays only) and special Christmas breakfasts daily from 25 November – 20 December made from delicious locally sourced and sustainable food. Anyone pre-booking Christmas lunch also benefits from free parking. Moors Valley Country Park and Forest is 10 miles north of Bournemouth on the Dorset/Hampshire border. Entry is free, although parking charges apply. For details, visit www.moors-valley.co.uk or call 01425 470721.

Puppies Find Peel2Save Cards Scrumptious Fundraising Idea The Mayor and The Mayoress of Bournemouth headed the guest list for the official launch of the Peel2Save fundraising card held at the Playgolf Centre. Other guests included local MP Tobias Ellwood, charity organisers and business leaders. But the stars of the show were the Woofability puppies who captured the hearts of all in attendance and who thought the idea was good enough to eat. Following the opening presentation by Debbie Shepherd and Peter Bartholomew, co-ordinators for Peel2Save in the area of Bournemouth, The Worshipful, The Mayor of Bournemouth Councillor Chris Rochester praised the initiative; “It’s the smaller, local charities that need more help in these difficult times” he said “and I wish Peel2ASave all success”. Di Pestell, a fundraiser from Julia’s House added her good wishes and then gave a heartfelt description of the challenges that are facing charitable organisations today; “It won’t be any easier next year” she said “and we need all the help we can get. We have to go on because the causes that rely on us still go on needing our help”. She went on to agree with Debbie’s view that Peel2Save was not there to replace existing fundraising activities, but was an original and effective addition that would really boost and enhance their steadfast efforts. “The great thing is that charities are now able to give something back to people who make donations to them”, said Di. Peel2Save helps local charities and not-forprofit groups raise funds without incurring any speculative costs. The attractive discount card folds to the size of a credit card, fits neatly into a purse or wallet and
TFWPD December 2011 page 44
contains 64 peel-off money saving vouchers, each one donated by a local business. The card costs £10 and contains hundreds of pounds worth of savings for all the family. Cards are sold exclusively by or on behalf of the good causes who gain £5 from the sale of each one. Charities, schools, churches, sports clubs and virtually any other group can benefit. “Fundraisers I have spoken to are looking forward to selling the card - knowing they are raising money but also giving the purchaser of Peel2Save a great deal”, said Peter. “It is our aim to raise £50,000 in the next 12 months for good causes in the Bournemouth area.” If you are a charity or not for profit group and would like to know more about Peel2Save and how it can help you to fundraise please email Debbie and Peter at:
