Christmas Window Display Competition 2010
The Ferndown Chamber of Commerce, supported by The Ferndown Town Council, once again ran a Christmas window dressing competition, which was open to members and non-members alike in the centre of Ferndown. Local businesses really got into the festive spirit and created some wonderful displays to help get everyone in the mood. All participants took great pride in their work and it was indeed very difficult to choose a winner. Businesses taking part included: Julia’s House, Lewis Manning Hospice, R T Knight, Woodland Florist, Xerocad, Bath Travel, A E Jolliffe, The Merchant of Venice, Perry Optometrists, Cooperative Funeralcare, Belinda’s Bakers, Henderson’s Opticians, Forum Framers, Ferndown Florists and Freedom Mobility. The winning window this year was Ferndown Florist who had a lovely combination of festive floral displays along with wrapped gift boxes and other decorations. The first prize was £50! Here you can see the winner, Suzanne, of

Local residents and visitors to the shops and business were invited to comment on the displays, which entered them into a prize draw to win a bottle of champagne. Entries included comments such as “Very festive, lovely display, someone took a long time and a lot of care designing the window display”, “It’s festive and fun and enters into the spirit of Christmas old and new” and “It looks very colourful, cheery and festive and is a warm, welcoming invite as you walk up the path to come on in. It makes one feel very ‘Christmassy’”. The winning comment came from Mrs J Sargent, who said of the Julia’s House display, “It lifted my spirits on a cold and miserable day to see such a lovely Christmas display. The chimney is very striking with the snow flakes full done and they say made by little stars. Well done!” The Ferndown Chamber of Commerce and Ferndown Town Council would like to thank everyone who participated, be it in creating a display or commenting on one. Very well done to all entrants. You really helped Ferndown join in the festive activities and create a warm and welcoming Christmas spirit for all of us.

WAGGY TAILS RESCUE, is a registered charity based in Ferndown. They rescue and re-home dogs that have been abandoned, neglected or otherwise in need of a good home. Special Sam Sam is about 5 years old but has had little input so needs an experienced collie owner. He needs lots of exercise and stimulation, as he likes to be with someone doing something. He would make a good companion for someone who works outside and/or likes to walk. He has not been socialised much so far so a home of his own would be better for him. He is very affectionate but big and bouncy so no young children.

Talking about wildlife with
Spectacular Starlings Gregarious and widespread, starlings are one of the most common British garden birds. Smaller than blackbirds, their plumage is glossy with iridescent green and purple in the summer, turning darker in the winter, with white speckles. On the ground, they walk with a curious waddle, but their flight is fast and direct, aided by the pointed, triangular wings. The female and the male are almost indistinguishable. Starlings are omnivorous, happy to eat almost anything from a variety of fruits, seeds and insects to worms and kitchen scraps. Assisted by the female, the male builds the grass nest in a cavity of a tree, wall or a building. Normally one brood is produced in April or May, consisting on average of four to seven glossy, pale blue eggs. The fledglings leave the nest at three weeks of age. Autumn sees the arrival of hundreds of thousands of migrants from Scandinavia and Eastern Europe, here to overwinter in large communal flocks consisting of thousands of birds. Returning to their roosts at dusk, starlings provide a spectacular sight in the sky by performing complex aerial acrobatics, known as murmurations. The reason for this behaviour has mystified biologists for centuries, but it is generally believed that by flocking together in this manner, they aim to protect themselves from predators such as hawks and peregrine falcons. Despite their widespread presence in Britain, starling numbers have declined in recent times by about 70 per cent

and they are now a Red List species of conservation concern. Look out for roosting flocks over reed beds, for example on the edge of Poole Harbour, but other plants will do as a substitute. Last winter a flock roosted in a large clump of bamboo in Corfe Mullen, which was subsequently cut down. If you are lucky enough to have starlings roosting on or near your land, enjoy one of nature’s spectacles while it lasts as the birds will disperse in the spring. Just under a year ago Art4All in Ferndown was launched by the Town Council to encourage local residents to work together in order to improve the appearance of the town and make it a more attractive place to live and work in. Over the past few months we have seen several murals installed in Penny’s Walk and along the Ringwood Road, a number of bright colourful banners along Church Road and a unique collection of wood carvings and handmade mosaic tiles in Millennium Park.
Meanwhile, Rotary Club members have also been busy planting hundreds of crocus and daffodil bulbs in Millennium Park just off Church Road in Ferndown. It is hoped the flowers will bring a splash of colour to help commemorate World Rotary Day on 23rd February and highlight what Rotary achieves through its work in local communities around the world. Art4All is now working on a new Garden of Memories and Memorial for Local Heroes in Millennium Park. Work begins sh o r t l y o n l a n d s ca p i n g a n d creating a circular memorial which will contain a Bronze centrepiece and a series of commemorative stones that will be offered for sale to local residents to commemorate their loved ones. The Ferndown Drama Group has been busy rehearsing for this year’s blockbuster Christmas Show. It’s a new version of the popular BBC television series - Hide-hi! The story line goes like this… “It is the start of a new season and founder Joe Maplin announces he is setting up a camp in the Bahamas. He needs female Yellowcoats to go and work there and the annual ‘Miss Yellowcoat’ competition will decide who goes. Rivalry between the girls is fierce. Ted is forced to employ numerous money making schemes when his wife turns up with bailiff in tow. Gladys continues her pursuit of Jeffrey, the Entertainment manager and Peggy pursues her dream of one day becoming a yellow coat. “ Performances will be at the Barrington Theatre from Wednesday 26th to Saturday 29th

Celebrating after 50 Rotary years Almost fifty years to the day he joined, retired local business man Alan Dean’s fantastic service for and with Rotary International has been recognised. A framed citation was presented to him by visiting District Governor Ian Legge at a meeting of Ferndown Rotary club where Alan (84) was President in 1986/87 and is an active member. Speaking at the presentation the President of Ferndown Rotary club
Keith Puttick said: ‘Alan is an example to all of us. ‘Even after fifty years of working tire le ss ly o n a w ide range o f community projects both within and outside Rotary, Alan remains one of our most enthusiastic members, always ready to add his support to anything that will help improve the lives of others.’ Apart from his service with Rotary, Alan is also well known throughout the Ferndown and Wimborne for his unstinting efforts not only in support of the British Legion and the Model Town but also for a wide range of community projects, work which continues and for which he has already been rightly awarded an MBE.
