Hello Ferndown and West Parley! We had a great Halloween Party with friends as you can see on page 45. Not only did the children have their faces painted but so did the adults! Personally I think it is an improvement. See what you think… Then the Fright Night in Ferndown was a real success. You can see photos of this on page 40. All a good excuse to let our hair down for an evening! Wow it is November 2011. Dare I say it but Christmas is just around the corner… again. It really is time to put attention on the house, clean the carpets ready for the family to arrive, get the roof fixed, tidy the garden, repair the boiler, buy a new fireplace, have all the electrics checked, finally plaster that wall, get a new fitted kitchen or just go all out and plan that new conservatory you have been so longing for. Whatever it is we have local people right here in The Ferndown & West Parley Directory wanting to help you. Your continued calls and support over the last six years nearly have really made all the difference! I still get excited when I see a van in the area that is advertising with us. HSBC Extends Reduced Loan Rate Scheme For Businesses That Are Recruiting Jobs Following positive feedback from new and existing customers, HSBC is extending its Employer Business Loan offer, which supports growing UK businesses that are creating new jobs. The scheme will now be available until 31 December 2011. Small business customers that apply for an Employer Business Loan between £1,000 and £25,000 receive a 1 per cent discount on the loan interest rate they pay for each person they have hired in the last six months, up to a maximum of 3 per cent. The extension of the Employer Business Loan scheme, which was initially launched in March, highlights the bank’s commitment to supporting strong, viable businesses. As part of this commitment, during the next three months, HSBC will be running a number of activities focussed on lending. The programme will see 100 local networking events being held across the UK, providing tips for businesses looking for growth and support on how to benefit from international opportunities. Huw Morgan, Head of UK Business Banking at HSBC said: "HSBC is committed to supporting UK businesses that are growing and creating

WEST PARLEY PARISH COUNCIL Housing Estates in the Green Belt This has gone quiet since last winter’s District Council consultation on their planned options. These were to build 210 houses on Dudsbury Heights and 100 in the New Road field. West Parley is still threatened and we expect the District Council to vote on their final plans about next February. If they are unchanged we will lose our precious green belt fields to the SE and SW of West Parley that are our key gap between us and Bournemouth. A Note for your Diary – the Parish Council will be holding a major public meeting at 7.30pm on Friday 2nd December in the Memorial Hall to update everyone and discuss how we might influence these plans.
Parish Plan The Parish Plan has now gone to print. It will be up for approval at the 16 November Parish Council meeting. It will set out the kind of West Parley that residents have said they want, and what needs to be done to get

there. Copies should be available at the 2nd December public meeting.
Improving the Village West Parley has its own character and identity. In the Parish Plan residents have told us how much they value this. So we have to make sure that the village looks the part. Along Christchurch Road the front of the Recreation Ground and the Memorial Hall have been much improved. A new railing, hedges cut, new turf on the verges. The Millennium Gardens are getting a face lift. And drivers will have noticed that West Parley now has handsome new entry signs.

The new rustic style children’s playground in the Recreation Ground has proved popular and the Council intends to develop it further, adding some more features and improving the surrounding environment.

Give blood and help save a life Could you spare an hour of your time to help save a life this autumn? NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) are asking people to give blood over the coming weeks to make sure blood stocks stay healthy as winter approaches. With donors more likely to stay at home during the winter and many people unable to donate due to seasonal coughs and colds, it’s vital that those who can give blood at the moment do so. The whole process takes around an hour – with the actual donation taking less than ten minutes – and could save the life of up to three people. Jonathan Sewell, Lead Donor Relations Manager for NHS Blood and Transplant, said: “We need to collect thousands of units of blood every day to provide patients in hospitals across the country with lifesaving transfusions. At this time of year blood stocks tend to dip because people are unable to give blood, so it’s important that people come forward to donate if they can do.” Anyone aged between 17 and 65, weighing more than 50 kg (7 stone 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. Fright Night First
Best Boy
Ferndown’s first Fright Night was a real success! Organised by a number of local organisations with support from the Town Council, visitors were treated to spooky stories from the resident witch, a candlelit trail through the woods with theatrical accompaniment and culinary delights such as Hot toads and BBQ bat wings (thanks to the Ferndown Rotary Club). Representatives from Tesco in Ferndown were on hand to present the prizes to the winners of the fancy dress competition. The event was officially opened by the Town Crier and the Mayor of Ferndown, Cllr John Muggleton. Thanks go to Gerry Clarke, Chairman of the organising committee, and all of the volunteers who made it such a great event. Here’s to another one next year!

With a Rose in its Paw It’s very easy to walk past Bournemouth’s coat of arms carved in stone on the front of the BIC and hardly notice it - but the complicated heraldic shield there is really well worth a second look. Actually, it’s better if you can find a coloured version, because that’s even more full of meaning. The fact is, when Bournemouth was ‘born’ and given its charter, specially signed by Queen Victoria herself in 1890, someone had the job of thinking up a really posh coat of arms – making it somehow relevant to this brand-new seaside resort of ours. ‘Puchritudo et Salubritas’ is the Latin motto: ‘Beauty and Health’! But what about the rest? Fascinatingly, every item tells a story. There are four quarters, with a lion in the top right and bottom left. He is there to remind us of Bournemouth’s links with royalty (Lillie Langtry?!). He is ‘rampant’ to tell us he is very watchful – like all coastal towns have to be, in case of attack. Then the birds are ‘martlets’ – sand martins, reminding us of cliff and beach - they also featured on the arms of King Edward the Confessor, who once owned this area. The fish are salmon, to suggest our links with Christchurch and the sea there. At the top there is a pine tree and four roses underneath it (health and beauty again). And the whole thing, in colour, is

done in blue and gold, telling us again how blue skies and golden sun and sand are to be found here. But what are those two lions are holding in their paws? This is something hardly anyone notices – but look carefully, and you’ll find each lion is proudly holding a rose. Once more, the message is clear – Bournemouth is beautiful! Local teen launches roller disco for Ferndown Thirteen year old Oli Fletcher of West Moors launched a brand new roller disco on 18th September this year at Ferndown Leisure Centre. The roller disco will operate every Sunday throughout the year. There will be two very different sessions. The first, running from 4.30 – 6pm is aimed at families, followed by a session with a minimum age of 12 which will have a more club/disco-style feel from 6.30pm – 8.30pm. The family session will be suitable for anyone from novice to advanced, providing a safe, fun environment to participate in something all together. “My parents have found that there are very few activities that they can join in with when they take us out – so this early session provides the ideal opportunity for an informal family outing with good music, disco lighting and games such as bulldog and basketball” comments Oli. “Whilst the parents can of course just watch, they will be actively encouraged to participate,” he adds. “Importantly there will be no minimum age for skaters – my 5 year old brother and sister have been skating since they were four, with relatively little effort they are now very impressive on their wheels.” The second session, geared towards teens and adults of all ages, will be a disco benefiting from fantastic music, up-to-date sound and lighting equipment, lasers, haze machines, ultra-violet effects and strobes – which will transform the sports hall into an atmospheric club venue. “My dad was and still is very into skating and is hoping that adults do come along to keep him company”. Oli, who attends Poole Grammar School, is a keen skater and music fan. He found that the local area did not really cater for skating and felt it would benefit from a disco on wheels. “We moved here from London three years ago, and whilst I love all that’s on offer here, there’s not much for kids my age to do.” says Oli. “I tried other local events but found them

to be quite limited. After some persuasion I managed to get my parents to invest in some great quality equipment so we could create that all-important atmosphere, playing a great range of music in a fantastic facility. The venue, Ferndown Leisure Centre, is fully supportive of the project. Andy Lovering, General Manager commented: “Oli’s Roller Disco is a great scheme, initiated by a young person in our community which will greatly benefit the area. The main sports hall here at Ferndown is the perfect location with its newly-resurfaced floor, and is big enough to accommodate a large skating audience”. You will need to bring your own skates, however we will have a limited stock of skates from The Skate Shop in Poole available to buy at the launch session at a discounted price. After the launch event Oli’s Roller Disco patrons can get a 10% discount via a downloadable voucher from their website www.olisrollerdisco.co.uk.

Halloween 2011
Witches, vampires, devils, ghouls and even the Grim Reaper himself were out in force this Halloween. We got together with some friends and everyone made a real effort to get into the “spirit” of things! The kids had great fun getting their faces painted — not to mention some of the adults too! With some music specially selected to befit the occasion and also a quiz to get the “brains” in motion as well, everyone had a real “hoot”! One of the best bits was “Guess who or what you are?”, where each person had a name of a person or object attached to their back and then by way of asking questions that could only be answered by “yes” or “no” work out who or what they were. Great fun!
