Dear Neighbours! Wow what fantastic weather we have had for this time of year! The beaches were packed...in October! I am sure it will all get a bit cooler now, but I have to say I like the changing seasons, changing the clothes in the wardrobe and curling up by the fire with a good movie. Then having the summer... whenever it happens these days... to look forward to. We have just had a very busy weekend putting the magazines together and in between making an air raid shelter with our 7 year old son for a project at school! The whole class is really enjoying this topic and learning a lot. Hayden was horrified at the prospect of being evacuated and is fascinated with the ‘real story’ of a girl this happened to. “It really happened Mummy!” he exclaimed, “I wouldn’t like that!” I think he appreciates his ’luxury lifestyle’ of DS, Xbox, TV and Wii a little more now! So, back to the house and all that needs to be done...maybe it is time for the plumbing to be checked before the winter months settle in, a new carpet to impress the in-laws, a loft conversion to give you more space, new kitchen doors or maybe you want to give up smoking? Here in The West Moors Directory we have all manner of businesses and tradespeople to help you. They are all local to you so do give them a call. These calls are really appreciated and make all the difference. The lucky winner of the Mantovani DVD and two tickets for the performance is J. Poulson! This month the prize is a lovely hamper. Good luck with that and have a great month of October! Best Wishes,
Debbie

101 Non-Emergency Number Goes Live in Dorset The new 101 police non-emergency telephone number went live on Monday 19th September 2011. Members of the public in Dorset must now ring 101 to contact Dorset Police for non-urgent enquiries. The new 1 0 1 num be r has re place d the previous non-emergency police number in Dorset of 01202 or 01305 222222. This new non-emergency number has gone live across all of the police forces in the south west and the 101 number is due to be available in all police force areas of England and Wales by the end of January 2012. Chief Superintendent Colin Searle, Communications and Contact Services Commander, said: “The new 101 police non-emergency telephone number is easy to remember and will be live across the whole country next year. “It is important that the public in Dorset know what they must dial 101 to contact police in Dorset for nonurgent business from now on. “The public should call 101 to report crime, to contact their local Safer Neighbourhood Team, to provide us with information about crimes that have been committed or to make a general enquiry.
TWMD October 2011 page 6
“As ever, people should always dial 999 in an emergency — when life is in danger or a crime is in progress.” Calls to the 101 non-emergency number — from both landlines and mobile phones — cost 15 pence each call no matter what time of day you call, or how long you are on the phone.

Talking about wildlife with
Red Squirrels The much beloved red squirrel is the only native squirrel to Britain and a quintessential part of our natural heritage. This charming mammal has been in steep decline in Britain for several decades, and may even be under the threat of extinction. This is mainly due to the introduction of the Am erican grey squirrel, which has a higher survival rate in various habitats and also carries a disease known as Squirrelpox Virus, which is fatal to red squirrels only. The red squirrels are lively but tiny; the adults only weigh about 250 to 350 grams. They sport long bushy tails which h elp th em b ala n c e w he n jum p i n g amongst trees, and ear tufts, which become more noticeable in the winter. The reddish brown coat moults twice a year, the winter coat being darker and thicker than the summer one. The red squirrels are at home in both coniferous and broad-leaved woodland and build their nests, known as dreys, in trees. They are elusive and solitary by nature, but do sometimes socialise and share their dreys with other squirrels.
a year, in winter and summer, and usually have a litter of 3-4 kittens each time. In the south of England the red squirrels are virtually extinct, with the only small populations remaining on the islands of Poole Harbour and The Isle of Wight. They are a protected species and it is an offence to intentionally kill or injury a red squirrel.
Niina Silvennoinen Visit the Dorset Wildlife Trust nature reserve on National Trust-owned Brownsea Island for the best chance to see red squirrels this October. You can help to protect their habitat with DWT’s adoption scheme, an ideal present for anyone who cares about wildlife. Photo by Steve Maskell
The red squirrel diet varies throughout the year, consisting mainly of seeds, nuts and acorns, and when these are scarce, they will go for berries, flowers and even birds’ eggs. The squirrels become less active in the winter but do not hibernate. They mate twice

West Moors Library saved!! A great deal of hard work and support from individuals in the community, the parish council and working party went into achieving this result. A very big THANK YOU to you all. We now need to encourage more people to use the library not only to borrow books but for a wide range of other facilities it provides. We had a very successful Open Day in September where we promoted services we offer to the community e.g. deliveries to housebound residents, reading groups to join, computer classes, regular councillor surgeries, and children's activities. Housebound deliveries - any one interested or knows someone who would benefit form this service call the library on 873272 and we can arrange a visit. Deliveries are made every 3 weeks by WRVS volunteers - books with large print, books on tape or books on CD are available. Reading Groups - there are 2 very successful reading groups which meet monthly at the library. There was interest shown by 6 people at the open day to start another reading group (day, time and venue yet to be decided) Again any one interested please call into the library or phone on 873272. First Time on Line computer sessions are run on a Monday morning from 9.30 - 12 noon for those who have very little knowledge of how to 'find their way around' a computer. Sessions are free and are run by a qualified instructor. Please encourage friends and neighbours to 'have a go'. The library has 6 public computers so there is plenty of chance to practice!
TWMD October 2011 page 34
Chris Chope MP holds surgeries at the library throughout the year. Dates available on request - you can make an appointment to speak to him on any matter privately at the library on selected Saturday mornings. The District and county councillors hold a surgery at the library on the first Saturday in the month from 10.00 - 11.00am - no need to make an appointment. We have started a new group for the 8 10 year olds called Chatterbooks. It meets on the last Tuesday of the month from 55.45pm and is a fun session with activities based around reading, authors and Stories from the Web. This is a new venture and we would encourage all parents to see if their children would like to join - their commitment will be for a year. Another new venture is Library Gets Lively. This replaces the storytime and rhymetime sessions. It takes place the first and third Thursday afternoon in the month from 3-3.45pm and includes rhymes, stories and craft activity for the under 4's. To make this worthwhile we do need continued support as their is quite a lot of planning involved in these sessions. Above all COME IN and see what we offer - membership is FREE and you can order new releases FREE (including DVD's) - no need to buy books that you no longer have room to store!

Why is the Memorial Hall charging parents to park? West Moors Memorial Hall Council has for the second year running asked Dorset County Council for financial assistance to defray the expenses incurred in maintaining the hall car park. This request has again been declined, despite the fact that the proposed pedestrian crossing will encourage extra parking for both St. Mary’s School and the Castleman trailway. Regretfully, because of this lack of council support, it has again been necessary to ask parents to pay an annual charge of £10 for parking in connection with the school run. Happily the scheme has the full support of St. Mary’s School and with very few exceptions those using the facility have cheerfully paid up. The scheme also reduces congestion in the Avenue around the school opening and closing times. Villagers should note that the Hall is a registered charity and unlike Ferndown Barrington Theatre or Verwood Hub, it receives no support from either the District or County Council. If the Hall Council is to continue to maintain an aged building on behalf of the community, without imposing a burden on local taxes, it needs to recover its costs. If you have not yet paid, or you wish to start using the car park to avoid all the hassle of reverse parallel parking in the Avenue, please contact the School Office to obtain your parking permit. £10 for a whole year- it has to be good value!!!

Taking cover… at St. Mary’s First School! Hayden attends St Mary’s First School here in West Moors and he loves it. This year the class has started a project on the 2nd World War and with a class of 16 boys and just 6 girls, you can imagine it is a popular subject! Last weekend we all had our home work to do….build an air raid shelter! As you can see from the pictures the whole class has done a fantastic job. What creativity. We started ours with a plant pot, cut off a third of it, covered it in paper mache, painted it, glued it, stuck on the grass and even used Steve’s hair gel to set the grass so it really would not move! We even put in some trees and farm people to set the scene. In addition to that Steve created an unexploded bomb in the garden which Hayden was very proud of… Boys hey!
TWMD October 2011 page 40
The girls on the other hand had beds set up in their safety spaces and posters on the walls. One girl, Faye, used mini shredded wheat as sand bags which I though was an ingenious idea. This air raid shelter also had a light flashing on and off inside. The children had great fun inspecting each other’s handiwork as you can see opposite. A siren was played on the computer so the children really did get a feel for what it was like. Pictures of youngsters sitting in the air raid shelters of the past were featured on the wall. Hayden was horrified to learn that children were “evac…uated Mum!” “I REALLY would not like that!”, he declared. If you have a war story or photos of your own and would like to share this with us, I am sure the children of St Mary’s would be delighted to hear it. If you send it to me I can publish this for all of us to read. In the meantime please take a look at all their hard work. They all deserve a big round of applause!

Purkiss, in a Temper, Burns His Old Axle
S
tanding in a glade in the New Forest is the famous ‘Rufus Stone’ a three-sided memorial about 4 ft high, marking the traditional spot where, on August 2nd 1100, King William II (‘Rufus’) was killed by an arrow. Was it an accident, or was it assassination? No one will ever know. It is one of history’s many unsolved mysteries. Sir Walter Tyrrel, one of the king’s hunting party, immediately fled the scene and spent the rest of his life abroad, fearing for his life as the prime suspect. Today’s ‘Rufus Stone’ is made of cast iron, with an account of the incident marked on each of the three sides. However, it’s a modern replacement of a succession of previous stones which have marked the spot over the centuries. And those memorial stones themselves were replacements of the old oak-tree, the ‘Rufus Oak’ which was reputed to have been on that site when Rufus met his fate.
TWMD October 2011 page 42
An old story, told by William of Malmesbsury, tells how Purkiss, an old charcoal burner in the New Forest, discovered the king’s body and transported it on his cart to Winchester cathedral. According to his dramatic account, the arrow was still sticking out of the king’s corpse, which bled all the way to Winchester. There’s a Blue Plaque in Bell Street, Romsey, to record the route old Purkiss took. The monks of Winchester cathedral were horrified to receive Rufus’s body, as the king was notoriously anti-Christian and homosexual into the bargain – something which was certainly not tolerated in those bygone days. They shovelled the body into the ground beneath one of the newlybuilt cathedral towers without any rite or ceremony. Seven years later that tower fell down! Obviously the wickedness of the Red King was to blame for the tower collapsing! Descendants of Purkiss lived in the forest for centuries after this
