Talking about wildlife with

Frogs & Toads Frogs and toads are our most common amphibians, widely found throughout Britain. They bear a close physical resemblance, but can be distinguished by several features. Frogs have a smooth, moist skin and long legs designed for leaps and jumps, whereas toads have a drier, “warty” skin and shorter legs, crawling being their preferred way of moving about. Frogs are more varied in colour, ranging from shades of green and brown to grey and yellow, whilst toads are generally dark brown. Providing the weather is warm enough, frogs and toads emerge from their wintering quarters as early as January to breed in ponds. Male frogs make sure they are the first to arrive and emit a low purring croak to attract a mate. Frogs lay their eggs in clumps, covered in protective jelly-like substance, whereas toads’ eggs are laid out in long strings.

The females lay thousands of eggs, but only a few survive to adulthood as spawn and tadpoles are extremely vulnerable. Tadpoles develop in stages in a process known as metamorphosis, and emerge as adults after a few months. Those that survive can live for up to eight years in the wild. The toads’ survival odds are slightly better due to toxins produced by the glands in their skin, making them unpalatable to some predators. Both frogs and toads feed on insects, slugs and worms, caught with their long tongues. Frogs, who can breathe through their skin, spend the majority of their lives in or near water, whereas toads are more terrestrial. Town Council Meeting 25th January Major points from the meeting: Works to Pedestrian Rail Crossing Footbridge - Following discussion on works being carried out on the pedestrian footbridge at the Wareham rail crossing point, the Town Clerk was requested to write to Network Rail and request details of any plans they had in mind for the footbridge (since it was understood that these plans may soon be put into practice), plus details of what stage had currently been reached with regard to works at the footbridge. It was re-emphasised that the Council was strongly opposed to any plans for closure of this structure. Change of Days/Council Calendar of Meetings – it was decided that the Council would continue to hold meetings on Tuesdays rather than Wednesdays as discussed at the last meeting and deferred. The Council’s Calendar of meetings for 2011/2012 Civic year was adopted, subject to one small change. The Calendar will shortly be available on the Council’s website. Purbeck Community Cafe Executive Committee – Councillor Sue Elmes reported on plans to establish a temporary community cafe in the rear of the Salt Pig cafe in North Street, by kind permission of the owners, pending the possibility of more permanent premises in the town centre at a later stage. Part Night Street Lighting – A letter of consultation from Dorset County Council on plans to reduce levels of street lighting in residential areas and thereby cut energy costs was discussed. A point raised by Councillor Dina Adkins was taken up regarding the high levels of social activity after midnight, particularly at weekends, and that perhaps midnight was too early to be considering reducing levels of street lighting in residential areas, including those leading off the town centre. Other points raised: safety concerns for pedestrians and drivers who needed clear visibility of potholes and other damaged areas following severe winter weather, and the effect of any street lighting reduction on the operation of CCTV cameras, which needed good levels of light to work properly. A letter has been sent to the County Council on all of these points. Royal British Legion Great Poppy Party Weekend – A letter from the Royal British Legion national Chairman, inviting organisations to celebrate the Legion’s 90th anniversary in a Poppy Party Weekend on 10th – 12th June, was discussed. Various ideas were put forward including a street party, a cream tea for veterans in the Corn Exchange and a military band concert at the Recreation Ground. It was decided that Councillor Malcolm Russell would liaise with the Royal Armour Centre regarding the possibility of a band concert, the Poppy Party information pack would be applied for and ideas would be discussed further at the next meeting of the Policy, Resources and Finance Committee on 14th February.

Amenities Committee Plans for a permanent cricket practice net at the Recreation Ground, requested by the Wareham Cricket Club, were discussed at the meeting held on 12th January and a site meeting has since taken place to determine the best position. Funding for the nets will be supplied by the Cricket Club subject to a grant funding application. The nets will be open to all members of the community to use, other than times allocated to the cricket club.

11 Wareham in Bloom – All Set for Britain in Bloom Finals – Calling all Supporters! The Mayor of Wareham, Councillor Eric Osmond, is pleased to announce that Wareham has again been selected as a finalist in the prestigious national Britain in Bloom Competition. Wareham was last selected in 2008 when it was awarded a Silver Medal. This year’s judging - which follows on from the regional South and South East in Bloom Competition judging in July – will take place in early August. Wareham’s award will be announced at the finals ceremony in St Andrews, Scotland in September. With two competitions to prepare for, two portfolios of achievements and evidence to submit, plus a local Wareham in Bloom and Best Kept Allotments Competition to organise, the Committee will be busier than ever this year. Current projects include a complete re-vamp and sponsorship of the roundabout at the northern entrance to Wareham. If there are any willing volunteers to lend a hand with planting, watering and maybe even joining our small Committee for no more than 6 meetings per year, perhaps YOU can help Wareham achieve even better than Silver in 2011? If you want to ‘Go for Gold’, please contact me on 01929 550771 for further details.

Billy Bloomer says Can YOU help? Wareham Town Council contact: Admin Office 01929 553006. Bookings taken for Corn Exchange, use of the Council Chamber for weddings/civil partnerships plus sports pitches at the Recreation Ground, Worgret Road. Website: www.wareham-tc.gov.uk

New Lives for Old! As this month arrives it heralds the last weeks in many areas for the pantomime season. I know there are some people for whom this form of live theatre is not exactly their ‘cup of tea’, but I have to confess I love it – particularly because of the interaction with the audience, both adults and children. So I am looking forward to taking part in the village pantomime this year - “Aladdin and his magical mystery teapot!” at the Drax Hall at the end of the month. There is a particularly famous line in this traditional panto where Abanazar, the wicked uncle, entices the Widow Twankey to exchange the old magic lamp for a brand new one. His cry as he comes on stage is “new lamps for old” or, in our updated version, “new teapots for old!”. When it comes to material things nothing lasts forever in this life. And the offer to ‘throw out the old’ and replace it with something new can sometimes be irresistible. Unless of course you’re a man and it’s your favorite jumper that you’ve worn since the 1970s!! Whether it’s a car, a washing machine or a toaster – once it starts playing up we are usually glad to replace it. If only life was like that!! Actually the Gospel message of the Bible says that God can give us new lives for old! When Jesus walked this earth two thousand years ago He made a bold statement of intent – in fact a promise for all who would follow Him. He said, I have come that you might have life, and have it more abundantly”.(John 10:10). New life with a capital ‘L’. This divine exchange can only take place as we come to Him in real repentance and faith, own up to our sinful nature and receive Him into our hearts and lives. The promise of God’s Word is this, “if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation – the old has gone and the new has come.” (2 Corinthians 5:17). When God says something you can believe it. Not one of His promises has failed and the wise words of the Bible have prevailed over the centuries, bringing divine wisdom and advice into our lives. You may choose to ignore such words and cling onto the life you have. That old life does not give you an automatic ticket to heaven. But as you allow the new life of God’s love and forgiveness to enter your heart through Jesus, God will give you an assurance that all will be well. And that life in Christ will take you safely to heaven when your time on this earth comes to an end. . And the quality comes from having a living relationship with Our Father God through the Lord Jesus Christ. . Why stick with your old life trying to struggle through in your own strength, when by coming to God and receiving His gift of salvation you can know an inner peace and strength that comes from the heart of God. And that life begins the moment you believe! May you find God’s love in your life, Pastor Jim Morris The Manse Flat Butt Lane Bere Regis Tel: 01929 471270 New Season of Chapel Mums ‘n Toddlers Why not join our Chapel Toddlers Group? WAGGY TAILS RESCUE, is a registered charity based in Ferndown. They rescue and re-home dogs that have been abandoned, neglected or otherwise in need of a good home.

Could I be your valentine? My name is Draco and I am a v er y hands om e Rot tw ei ler / Doberman cross, about 18 months old. I wouldn’t be here at all if Waggy Tails Rescue hadn’t sent a van up to the Pound I was in and collected me and some of my friends. We were all about to be put to sleep on Christmas Eve! But now we all have a second chance and, although they have brought me to a lovely foster home - I would really like someone special to love. I love people, but am not so keen on other dogs (and don’t mention the C. A. T word!). As you can see, I am a big, strong boy so need a big home with a large garden, or better still, some land which I could guard for you when I am not charging around! I have been well looked after (my previous owners neutered me and I am also microchipped) and, despite my size, I do love to be cuddled. Could I cuddle you please? For more information on Draco and his friends, please phone 01202 875000!

Wareham Hospital League of Friends Annual General Meeting in the Wareham Methodist Church on Monday the 28th of February 2011 at 10.00am for 10.30 am start

The Purbeck Association of The National Trust It’s always a worry when you change something that’s been established for a long time. In our case a new year brought a change of venue for the public talks that we hold in Wareham. For various reasons we’ve moved from the Parish Hall on the quay to Carey Hall in Mistover Road. We were worried that attendances might drop, but we had a sizeable audience, including many non-members, to hear the indefatigable Reg Saville talk about the Leeson Estate in Langton Matravers. The new venue is spacious and comfortable, and has lots of free parking, We’re hoping for an even bigger audience for our next talk there in March, when a member of the BSO will talk about the work of the Orchestra. We just need to work out a better arrangement for serving the free teas and coffees that end our meetings. Our monthly talks in Wareham and Swanage are open to everyone - watch out for our posters and listings in the local paper. Our annual membership remains great value at only £5, or £7.50 for a couple. If you’d like to get more out of your own National Trust membership (or your status as a Trust Volunteer) by joining us, call Membership Secretary Jay Burke on 423775 or see our website www.purbecknt.org.uk.

Fashion Extravaganza Hosted by Stoborough Women's Institute On Thursday 4th November 2010 at 10 am the Rex Cinema became a hive of activity. The ladies from Stoborough W.I. had arrived and in true WI fashion got down to their tasks so that all would be ready for the start of the show at 7pm.

were from five outlets in Wareham. The Weldmar Trust, Sue Ryder, Dress Code, the Gallery Boutique and Joys. The models from the shops and members of Stoborough W.I. "strutted their stuff" and an excellent evening of fun was had by all.

Julie and her team from The Rex Cinema were on hand to put the lighting and sound system in place. Flowers and tulle were arranged, balloons inflated and raffle prizes displayed. The models arrived for their makeup and rails of clothes appeared. Finally the wine glasses were filled and it was 6.30 pm.

The purpose of the evening was to show what a variety of quality clothing is available in Wareham and to raise money for The Heroes Haven in Swanage.

The door opened and the public streamed in. All 130 of them generously buying programmes and raffle tickets. The clothes

A big thank you to everyone who participated in one way or another and an even bigger thank you to all who bought tickets, programmes and raffle tickets because without you we would have been able to send "Heroes Haven" a donation of £500.

Rotary Club of Wareham A BIG ‘THANK YOU’ FOR YOUR SUPPORT Rotary Club of Wareham was out in force over the Christmas period and, thanks to the generosity of local residents, managed to raise over £3750. We held our annual Rotary Tree of Light ceremony at Wareham Hospital on 11th December and, as a result of the kindness of the many people who sponsored a light in memory of a loved one, we raised £1690 from this event. This money will be shared equally between Wareham Hospital and Macmillan Cancer Support Dorset. S e c o n d l y, d e s p i t e a t ro c iou s w e a t h e r conditions, we raised over £2067 from our annual carol collections in Wareham, Northmoor, Sandford, Bere Regis and Wool between 6th-17th December and from our carols round the Christmas tree at Hyde Place

in Wool on Christmas Eve. This money will be carefully spent supporting charitable causes both at home and abroad. A big thank you to all of you who helped us to raise this money. Finally, may we bring to your attention the fact that 23rd February is Rotary Awareness Day and that we shall be carrying out several events during the month of February to make you more aware of what we do. Also, why not visit our website on www.warehamrotary.co.uk to find out what we get up to?
