Dear Wareham, Wool & Bere Regis, We had a great Halloween Party with friends as you can see here. Not only did the children have their faces painted but so did the adults! Personally I think it is an improvement. What do you think… All a good excuse to let our hair down for an evening! I hope you were able to join in some of the fun too. Wow it is November 2011. Dare I say it but Christmas is just around the corner… again. It really is time to put attention on the house, change the carpets ready for the family to arrive, get the windows fixed, tidy the garden, repair the boiler, have all the electrics checked, get a new fitted kitchen or just go all out and plan that new conservatory you have been so longing for. Whatever it is we have local people right here in The Wareham District Directory wanting to help you. There is a full index on page 30 with all that can be found inside. Your continued calls and support of the advertisers really makes all the difference. I get very excited when I see a van in the area that is advertising with us. If you see a van and then a lady waving with a big smile on her face, it could just be me! It must look very funny. The lucky winner of the meal for two last month was Mrs A Dibben. Well done! This month there are two prizes on offer… a meal for two at the Kings Arms, Stoborough, to be won on the prize wordsearch and a family ticket to see Jack and the Beanstalk at The Pavilion in Bournemouth on 6th December in a reader competition. Good luck! I hope you have a great month of November. Very Best Wishes,

Debbie Tuesday, November 01, 2011 20:31 Black Magenta Yellow Cyan

SAXON ROUNDABOUT – THEFT OF SWORD Wareham Directory readers will no doubt have heard of the vandalism and theft to the Saxon sword embedded in Purbeck stone at the A351 Wareham roundabout, launched as part of a complete renovation of this uninspiring feature on 10th May by the Wareham in Bloom Committee and many community sponsors and volunteers. In the early hours of 25th September, the day of the announcement of Wareham’s result in the national Britain in Bloom finals, thieves had taken off the sword using an angle grinder and disappeared into the night. As I write, there is no trace of the sword and the Police would like to hear of anything, however small, that may lead to its recovery and the arrest of the culprits. Please telephone the new 101 number if you have any information - 101 is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for calls that are less urgent than the 999 number. BRITAIN in BLOOM FINALS 2011 - SILVER GILT FOR WAREHAM in BLOOM At a glittering awards ceremony in St Andrews, Fife, on 25th September, attended by several members of the Wareham in Bloom Committee, Wareham was awarded with a Silver Gilt Medal for its ‘Small Town’ category, following months of preparation and final judging in early August. The award was presented by TV gardener/ writer Rachel de Thame, shown here with Wareham in Bloom Chairman, Councillor Eric Osmond and Vice Chairman, Councillor Sue Elmes. This was one of the highest awards that any entry in the Southern Region has achieved since the medal system was introduced in 2002. During their visit, the judges expressed their liking for the Saxon Roundabout project and praised all those who had contributed. Councillor Osmond said: “Wareham certainly looked its best on judging day, thanks to a whole army of people who were determined that our town should do well. We are delighted with our award!” Well done, Wareham! WINTER SNOW AND ICE MAINTENANCE – WAREHAM TOWN CENTRE At the Amenities Committee meeting on 12th October, Members received a report from the Town Clerk on his recent attendance at a Winter Maintenance Briefing given by Dorset Highways. As part of the completion of a Winter Maintenance Plan - which all parish and Town Councils are participating in following last year’s severe winter weather - he requested the purchase of a suitable salt/grit dispenser for the footways (pavements) of the town centre. This would facilitate the duties of the Council’s Lengthsman if snow fell. Following news that the caretaker and lengthsman had raised well over £400 towards the total cost of £1089 by selling off scrap metal from the rear yard, it was decided to go ahead and purchase the dispenser. Let’s hope we do not have to use it! If we do, we are well prepared. The salt dispenser will also be used in Howards Lane car park. Together with the efforts of local shopkeepers/businesses in keeping their frontages clear of snow as soon as it has stopped, to prevent the build-up of ice, this should be a huge improvement on last winter. FOOTPATH LIGHTING – HAUSES FIELD At the same Amenities Committee meeting, it was decided not to go ahead with a plan to install several solar powered lighting columns at the Hauses Field footpath, to improve community safety in accordance with a recent PACT request. Members heard that the columns would cost nearly £4,000 each, which was simply not affordable in the current financial climate.

DONATION of PUBLIC BENCH - CAREY At the Amenities Committee meeting, the committee agreed to part fund a bench to be donated for public use in Carey, in the vicinity of the Spar shop by a member of the public, subject to agreement on exactly where it was to be located. Many thanks to Mrs J.Scarrott for this splendid gesture! A-FRAMES – WAREHAM TOWN CENTRE Following on from a report to the previous meeting, the Policy, Resources and Finance Committee (PRF Committee) heard from two members of the Wareham Chamber of Trade regarding a plan for the Town Council to control the placing of A-frame advertising boards and other potential obstructions to pedestrians in the town centre. It was agreed that the Town Clerk would meet with Chamber representatives with a view on agreeing to a joint approach to draw up a suitable scheme. FINANCIAL REGULATIONS REVIEW At the same meeting, the PRF Committee received revised Financial Regulations from a working party and accepted the recommendations for immediate implementation, following referral to the Town Council meeting on 2nd November. BUDGET LINES – FINANCIAL YEAR 2012/2013 By end of November, all committees and the Council itself will have agreed their budget lines for Financial Year 2012/2013. There has been a considerable ‘tightening of the belt’ this last year due to Government constraints in the current financial climate and it remains to be seen what projects the Town Council can pursue when the final budget and Precept (Council’s share of the Council Tax requested from Purbeck District Council) are agreed at the 12th December Council meeting. Wareham Town Council contact: Admin Office 01929 553006. Bookings taken for Corn Exchange, use of the Council Chamber for weddings/civil partnerships plus sports pitches at the Recreation Ground, Worgret Road. Website: www.wareham-tc.gov.uk

READER COMPETITON JACK AND THE BEANSTALK THE BOURNEMOUTH PAVILION PANTOMIME SATURDAY 3 DECEMBER 2011 – MONDAY 2 JANUARY 2012 After spectacularly breaking box office records with ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ in 2009, and following the overwhelming success of ‘Cinderella’ last year - UK Productions brings you a giant production of ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’, this year’s Bournemouth Pavilion Pantomime. Make sure the whole family is full of beans this Christmas and follow the hilarious tale of the ups and downs of young Jack Trott played by Debra Stevenson (The Impressions Show & Coronation Street), the boy who manages to sell the family’s only valuable possession, Daisy the Cow, for a handful of beans (and they weren’t even Heinz!). He ends up having to climb a giant beanstalk into the clouds and a whole heap of trouble, to retrieve the cow and to try and impress the King. Jack is helped and hindered along the way by his less than bright brother Silly Billy played by CBeebies star and Bournemouth panto favourite Chris Jarvis, the Good Fairy, Kate Weston from Wave 105, and his longsuffering mother Dame Trott played hilariously by one of the country’s top panto dames, Nick Wilton better known as Mr Lister from Eastenders.

WDD November 2011 page 20

Join Jack on his quest to defeat the evil Giant Blunderbore and his nasty henchman Fleshcreep played by Brian Capron (Coronation Street’s bad boy Richard Hillman), to win not only his fortune but also the hand of the Kings beautiful daughter. The whole production is complimented by lavish costumes and a sumptuous set and promises to be yet another spectacular success from producers UK Productions. It’s a giant of a pantomime… don’t miss it!

We have a family ticket to give away!!! The ticket is for the 7pm performance on Tuesday 6th December. To enter, simply fill in your name and telephone number: Name: ______________________ Phone: ______________________ Send to: The Wareham Directory 1 Moorlands Rise Ferndown, BH22 0JR The winner will be chosen on 30th Nov

01929 552431 or 07719 170777 aa.hill@lineone.net In 2011 the Music Trust celebrates 30 years of dedicated work in education and encouragement of talented musicians to use their skills and artistry for the enrichment of worship. The Trust gives grants to assist those truly dedicated to music who, without help, might never be able to achieve their goals. Grants are made to organ scholars, lay clerks, singers, instrumentalists and cathedral choristers. Stories, such as this one from St. Georges Chapel in Windsor are commonplace: “Henry has progressed beautifully since I last wrote to you and sings solo in chapel on average once a fortnight. All this is culminating in a performance at the Royal Albert Hall before the Queen, for the British Legion of Remembrance. He is opening the evening with a solo of Pie Jesu. Many heartfelt thanks for your valued continued support of a chorister.”

Remembering a great sacrifice This month again the blood-red poppy will feature prominently in our national life as we pause reverently to remember with thanksgiving all those who gave their lives in the cause of freedom. Scarlet poppies grow naturally in conditions of disturbed earth throughout Western Europe. The destruction brought by the Napoleonic wars of the early 19th Century, transformed bare land into fields of blood red poppies, growing around the bodies of the fallen soldiers. In late 1914, the fields of Northern France and Flanders were once again ripped open as the First World War raged through Europe’s heart. The significance of the poppy as a lasting memorial symbol to the fallen was realised by the Canadian surgeon John McCrae in his poem ‘In Flanders Fields’. The poppy came to represent the immeasurable sacrifice made by his comrades and quickly became a lasting memorial to those who died in the First World War and later conflicts. Here’s few lines from the poem: ‘In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields.’ When fighting ceased in 1918 the mud of the battlefields was allowed to rest and nature began to be restored and before long the wild flowers grew and bloomed including the poppy. The colour of red is a poignant reminder of the bloodshed and the sacrifice of millions of brave soldiers. And so the poppy remains a symbol of sacrifice. As Christian believers we remember with thanksgiving the greater Sacrifice that God made on our behalf in order that men and women might be freed from that eternal enemy of Sin and Death. That Sacrifice was not made by some great army but was brought about by just One Person – the Lord Jesus Christ. The symbol that unites us is that of the cross. Today, crosses have almost become a fashion accessory and sadly for many people have little meaning. But ‘the old rugged cross’ will always be there as a reminder that God so loved the world He sent His only begotten Son to die for us , to die in our place, that we might be forgiven and know peace with God. Let’s not forget the words of Jesus when He said, “‘Greater love has no-one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. And you are my friends, if you do what I command you” (John 15:13). Pastor Jim Morris The Manse Flat Butt Lane Bere Regis Tel: 01929 471270

Other News from the Chapel John Mackay – It was great to see the Chapel packed solid with people eager to hear John Mackay speak on behalf of biblical creation. John is an easy to listen to Australian geologists who obviously knows his stuff and was willing to answer a whole bundle of questions on the subject. Our thanks to many in the village who came. The evening was recorded on DVD and copies of these can be freely borrowed by contacting Pastor Jim on 01929 471270. John, who is the International Director of Creation Research, has also made a number of DVDs and these may also be accessed via the Chapel or on the Creation Research Website. Lest we forget… The Services for Remembrance Day this year will be led by Pastor Jonathan Paterson at 10.00am and 6.00pm on Sunday November 13th.
