Dear Wareham, Wool and Bere Regis, Well I have to say that we have had a very easy summer this year. Hayden spent three fabulous weeks at Grandma and Grandad’s up in Hull. The house was rather ‘empty’ to say the least and I was very glad to have him back, but knowing he learns all sorts of skills from sorting the maggots out for fishing, to planting seeds and an oak tree, to baking a fruit crumble, to cleaning the lawn mower and even washing the doors ready for decorating… I am more than happy to let him have fun! Unfortunately he is not quite so keen at home… It is our family holiday this week so I do hope we get some sunshine. It certainly has been mixed weather. Here in The Wareham District Directory we have many local tradesmen and businesses offering their help. The full index at the back gives the whole range of services available. Please do call them whenever you need something done in the house. This really does make all the difference and I thank you for supporting the local people. Times are a little tougher at the moment as we know. All calls are greatly appreciated. There are many interesting articles and local Purbeck organisations and societies promoted this month too… a Charity Concert by the Wessex Military Band, a plea for donations from Age UK Wareham, Dazzling Dragonflies, Bere Regis Chapel, Wareham Lions, the Purbeck Classic Car Rally and many more… The lucky winner of the prize last month was Andrew Fidler. Well done! This month there is a free DVD and a pair of tickets to see Mantovani at The Bournemouth Pavilion in October. Great prize! Wishing you a good month of September,

Concert in aid of local charity Wessex Military Band will be in concert on Saturday, 15 October at 7.00pm at the Purbeck School, Wareham in aid, once again, of The Brian Clark Breath of Life Fund (supporting The British Lung Foundation). This very successful event was first held last year and raised £1,575 for the charity. The Breath of Life Fund was set up in March 2009 in Brian’s name and memory shortly after he passed away. Brian had suffered all his life with asthma and in the latter years with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) an umbrella term for a number of lung conditions including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Brian’s Fund is set up through the British Lung Foundation and to date stands at £2,612.
music this year. They have performed for HRH Prince of Wales and HRH Duke of Kent and have enjoyed playing at prestigious venues such as The Royal Albert Hall, and are regularly invited to play overseas in Germany, France, Malta and Spain. The concert will again include many of Brian’s favourite pieces from rousing marches to traditional melodies and favourites. Tickets for the concert are £5 to include refreshments and the evening will include a raffle. Tickets are available in Wareham from Farwells Newsagents and AF Joys, Wendy’s Hairdressers at Northmoor, Carey Newsagents, Sandford Pharmacy, Amber Hardware, Wool or by telephoning 01202 620142 or 01929 552591 .
Brian was born in Wareham and was very well known and much respected around the town and the Purbecks and was regularly seen playing in Wareham Town Band where he played for over 50 years in total until ill health forced him to give up his beloved music some 7 years ago. For most people though, Brian was best known as ‘Nobby’ or ‘Yogi’, the South Dorset Coaches driver that took hundreds of children to school and back during the 1960’s & 70’s from the surrounding areas to Wareham School. Wessex Military Band is based in Bridport and includes musicians from all the surrounding counties. Formerly the voluntary Army Air Corp Band, Wessex Military is celebrating 30 years of making

Charity shop appeal in Wareham as donations hit all time low Volunteers and staff are urging locals to donate unwanted items to their Age UK charity shop in Wareham to help refill empty rails and shelves which are usually brimming with interesting finds. The Age UK staff in Wareham are struggling to keep up with demands of shoppers as donations of things like clothes, cookware and books have plummeted dramatically in the last three months. The Age UK Shop Managers, Sue and Mandy are making a desperate plea for good quality men’s, women’s and children’s clothing, plus items like crockery, books, CDs and DVDs. Sue said: “Our store room is usually piled high, but now it’s almost empty. Although this is a good thing as it means we have sold what we had, we cannot cope with the increasing demand if nothing else comes in; we simply can't sell fresh air! Without continued donations of everything from clothing to cookware, Age UK cannot continue its vital work to help improve the lives of older people across the country.”
Sue continued: "We have a lot of local supporters who donate regularly to our shop which we're extremely grateful for, but we are still struggling! We are looking for quality items, no matter how big or small. And remember each time you donate stock to Age UK, please Gift Aid it which gives us an extra 25p for every pound we make selling your items. Anything we cannot sell gets recycled through our recycling partnerships, so nothing goes to waste.” Gift Aid is a fantastic way for Age UK to raise more money and in turn makes later life better, as it increases the value of donations by 25%. All people need to do is fill in a simple Gift Aid form when they take their donations to an Age UK shop. It is free to sign up; the only requirement is that you are a UK tax payer. By allowing Age UK to Gift Aid the donation, it will be able to collect an extra 25p on every pound raised through the sale of items as the Charity can reclaim basic rate tax on the gift. For more information contact Sue or Mandy at AGE UK Wareham on 01929 550729.
The staff at the Age UK shop in Wareham usually put new items on display each day, but a decline in stock means that they can only manage to scrape together about 100 items at the moment each day.

Purbeck Stone flooring from Suttles – bespoke and beautiful These days, the words bespoke and unique are often bandied about by those who design and build high-quality products for the home. In an era of mass production, everybody wants something different that stands out from the norm. In the case of flooring from local quarry Suttles though, this uniqueness is taken to a whole new level. The inherent characteristics within every piece of Purbeck flagstone extracted from our California Quarry in Swanage means that no two floors can ever be the same. The stone is renowned for being able to be polished to a high-gloss finish, revealing the myriad of fossils that have been embedded in it over millions of years. As well as a beautiful stone floor that will last a lifetime, you will also have something that reflects the area in which you live and the craftsmanship that has grown up there. Polishing takes place at our masonry works in Swanage, following the sawing and squaring process.
As testament to its desirability and wide appeal, Purbeck stone flooring can be found in the likes of the British Library in London, the McDonald Institute in Cambridge as well as homes across the UK. Stone is available for both internal and external use in a choice of finishes and to suit all budgets. We can also recommend a local craftsman who can lay it. So if you want a truly unique floor, find out more by visiting us in person at California Quarry, Panorama Road, Swanage BH19 2QS or online at www.stone.uk.com or by calling 01929 439444.

Talking about wildlife with
Dazzling Dragonflies Dragonflies are amongst our most ancient insects, having been around for about 300 million years. In Britain, they are divided into two sub-orders of the insect family Odonata: dragonflies and damselflies. Damselflies are the smaller and weaker flier of the two, tending to stay close to their aquatic habitats, unlike dragonflies, which are stronger and more adventurous. Dragonflies have featured for centuries in many folk legends and myths, revered in some cultures and feared in others. Despite their old folklore name ‘the horse stinger’,they are harmless to humans and neither bite nor sting. Dragonflies require a steady supply of water with plenty of vegetation, and can be found near rivers, ponds and canals, thriving in unpolluted water, therefore being reliable indicators of good water quality. They go through three life stages; egg, larva and adult. The aquatic larvae are formidable predators and generally feed on anything smaller than themselves: small fish, ta d p o le s, a n d e v e n other larvae. The adults prey on other flying insects such as moths, m i d g e s a n d mosquitoes. They are excellent and agile fliers, and rely on their eyesight when hunting.
WDD September 2011 page 22
The complete life cycle of the dragonfly is anywhere from a few months to a few years, the adult being the shortest, usually a couple of weeks. Dragonflies are devoted sun worshippers and at their most active in good weather at the height of summer. In Britain, they face threats such as habitat destruction and fragmentation, as well as pollution, and species of British dragonflies have become extinct in the last few decades. Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Upton Heath reserve has recently been named in the top 40 sites in the UK for dragonflies and September is a great month to look for them. If you would like to join Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Dragonfly Group to help record sightings around the county, email Andrew Brown on: brown_a_r@yahoo.co.uk Common Blue Damselfly

Back to Church! On Sunday 25th September churches nationwide will be celebrating ‘Back to Church’ Sunday’ – an initiative apparently started in Manchester seven years ago. Statistics show that whilst many people admit to a Christian faith, or a sincere interest in it, and to praying or reading the Bible or trying to live by Christ’s teaching, the number attending church services regularly on a Sunday is gradually diminishing in many places. Why is this? There are many reasons – many people have to work every Sunday, others are on shifts that include occasional Sundays; people’s weekend routines are often very complex and may differ from week to week; close family may live away; children may divide their time between different parents, etc. In addition there are more leisure options than ever before and Sunday Church is often presented by the media as old fashioned, irrelevant and boring. ‘Back to Church Sunday’ is an opportunity for local churches to encourage people to come and discover for themselves that meeting with others, in connection with faith in Jesus, can be a positive, encouraging, challenging and up-lifting experience. Moreover media stereo-types of ‘fuddy duddy’ mindless Christians and old fashioned churches may be shown to be inaccurate. Don’t knock our church until you’ve tried it! And even if, after sampling a service or two with us, you feel it was not for you, I guarantee that you will have to change your view on the above stereotypes. The Christians I mix with are good-hearted, caring people who actually give a lot of thought and study to their faith. Yes, we are human and we make mistakes – but the sense of love and fellowship we find through our relationship with Jesus is somehow more important. And as for boring services! I’m not saying we are a bunch of chandelier swinging ‘happy clappy’ converts engaging in exciting but shallow worship – but we do know how to be happy in God’s presence and I trust something of the joy of the Lord pervades our reverential worship of Our Heavenly Father. We love the Bible and have a real desire to explore and know its truth. Sunday 25th September just happens to be our annual Harvest Festival when we focus on God’s goodness to us for His provision. May I invite you to come along and find out more? If you are not attending a Christian church at present I would urge you to join with us for this service of thanksgiving. This is a service for the whole family and we will be encouraging the youngsters to bring along produce for the Harvest Table. The produce will be donated to a worthy local Christian cause. The Service begins at 10am and is followed by light refreshments. The psalmist was able to say “I was glad when they said unto me; Let us go into the house of the LORD.” (Psalm 122:1) Help me to echo the psalmist’s words by joining with us on this or any Sunday! You will be welcome! Pastor Jim Morris The Manse Flat Butt Lane Bere Regis Tel: 01929 471270 Our Midweek programme resumes this month on dates shown below: SUNDAY WORSHIP EVERY SUNDAY at 10.00am & Junior Church for the youngsters The Chapel Toddlers Group - Mondays 1.30pm – 3pm provides a time for mums & carers to relax and get together as the toddlers interact in two large play areas of the Chapel. If you think this might be for you do come along! You will be most welcome. Resumes 12th September. The STS Youth Group - Mondays 6.30pm – 8.00pm is for 12-18 year olds who want to know more about the Christian faith. There are currently 20 regular youngsters who attend. Resumes 12th September. The Bible Fellowship Group - Tuesdays - 7.30pm – 9.15pm – want to know more about the Bible and prayer in a friendly atmosphere? Held in the Manse in Butt Lane.

Turn left, follow the road back to the gate you exited from when coming onto the road (600 metres). Turn right and retrace your steps back to the quarry ). Kimmeridge Bay from the Eastern Ridgeway

MANTOVANI:HOLLYWOOD TO BROADWAY BOURNEMOUTH PAVILION THEATRE — SUN 16 OCT 2011, 7.30PM After three previous sold out concerts Paul Barrett and Franck Leprince, in association with Kenneth Mantovani, bring the sound of Mantovani back to the Bournemouth Pavilion Theatre with, Mantovani – Hollywood to Broadway on Sunday 16 October 2011. The show takes you on a nostalgic journey from Hollywood to Broadway, featuring movie and musical classics. Hear the unique Mantovani sound in Fiddler on the Roof, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Gone With The Wind, South Pacific and Dr Zhivago. His countless fans will also love to hear Mantovani’s multi-million selling hits including Charmaine, Moulin Rouge, Some Enchanted Evening and many more. Local promoter and lifelong Mantovani fan, Paul Barrett, insists on recreating the full might of the original Mantovani Orchestra and he dismisses several money-saving suggestions in his bid to precisely replicate Mantovani’s original instrumental line-up. This doesn’t come cheap but he has no regrets. “It’s what I choose to spend my money on and I am absolutely delighted with the result,” he explains. “I could be buying luxury cruises or top of the range cars but what I wanted more than anything else was to recreate the Mantovani Orchestra and I’ve done it.”

WAREHAM LIONS CLUB For over 40 years Wareham Lions Club has been helping in the community in the north Purbeck area. Formed in 1971, and with a present membership of twenty five, we have been following the motto of our parent organisation, Lions International, “WE SERVE”. There are over 44,000 clubs worldwide and each club is relatively autonomous in the way it serves its local community. Many p eopl e as so cia te Lions wi th fundraising but, in fact, that is only a part of what we do. Our main events are aimed at providing a service to local people and include such as our Seniors Party in January when almost 200 more elderly citizens are entertained and fed in the Purbeck Hall, a Barn Harvest Festival at Redcliffe Farm, Ridge in September and a Fun Day for those with disabilities, at the same venue ,in June. Fund-raising is essential, of course, as the most effective way of helping someone who is disadvantaged, may be the purchase of equipment ,such as a specially adapted tricycle for a severely disabled youngster or paying for an outing, both of which fall outside the responsibility of the state. Our club’s most visible and effective way of serving the community is through our minibus or ‘ambulance’, as we like to call it. This has a tail-lift for wheelchairs or those with more severe mobility problems and provides transport to and from club meetings and events, allowing those who ‘don’t get out much’ the freedom to access opportunities which otherwise would be beyond their reach. These can vary from
WDD September 2011 page 35
Lunch Clubs to the Grapevine Club, Wareham Disabled Club or special outings to harbour or river cruises and Swanage Railway. Obviously, this incurs considerable costs such as fuel, maintenance, insurance and depreciation – we aim to replace our bus every few years! – and this requires some serious fund-raising. In recent years we have received a much-needed boost for our ‘ambulance’ fund, having been invited to help in the organisation and catering for an annual ‘Classic Car’ Rally, staged locally. Both local enthusiasts and many from more distant parts come together for a meal and social gathering while proudly displaying their gleaming motors. The most recent of these, held in July this year, enabled us to raise 6,000 pounds towards replacing our present bus and we are most grateful for the opportunity to be involved in such a prestigious and enjoyable event. Please look out for Wareham Lions as we continue to serve in a host of ways. Forthcoming events include the Jumble Sale in Wareham Town Hall on 1st October, our annual Swim for Charity at Purbeck Sports Centre on 16th October and the Seniors’ Party in January.

The Purbeck Classic Car Rally The Purbeck Classic Car Rally main sponsors are B F Crew, D Curtis Ltd, Hallmark Cars, M J White Ltd, and Wool & Bovington Motors who for the past four years have elected to raise monies for Wareham Lions. We receive smaller sponsorships from over 30 local businesses and individuals enabling us to raise this year £6,000. The Rally had two starts, with 26 Classic Cars beginning at the Silent Woman Pub Coldharbour and 24 Classic Cars at the Kings Arms Pub in Stoborough. This years route took the cars from Wareham towards Arne across the heath to Corfe Castle and eventually taking the main road to Owermoigne and proceeding onto Crossways. After lunch we held a raffle and everyone had a chance of winning 30 prizes donated
by local businesses. The day finished at a r o u nd 6 p m an d th e wea th er wa s outstanding as it has been for the last 6 years. Next year Mike and Pam Jeffries have very kindly agreed to let us hold the event again at Hethfelton. This will be our 7th year and all proceeds once more will be for the “Wareham Lions”.
The Purbeck Association of The National Trust Most of you will recognise the subject of this sketch as the RNLI College in Poole. So what’s it doing in a piece about our Association (apart from the fact that it was drawn by well-known local artist David Cole, who is one of our members)? The answer is that the sketch is on the cover of our latest Newsletter, and highlights one of our forthcoming activities - a guided tour of the site followed by lunch at this, the headquarters of one of our leading charities. This is just one of 18 different visits, social events and talks we’ve organised for the next six months. We’re always looking for something new to do, so through the winter we’re having a series of monthly ‘hotpot lunches’ at Corfe Castle Tearooms. £7.50 will get members and their friends a traditional hotpot (or a vegetarian version). This seems pretty good value, and it includes the chance to catch up with old friends and make new ones. Our annual membership is also great value at only £5, or £7.50 for a couple. If you’d like to get more out of your own National Trust membership (or your status as a Trust Volunteer) by joining us, call Membership Secretary Jay Burke on 423775 or visit our website www.purbecknt.org.uk, where you can see our whole programme of activities.
