semester 1: research

As a world we are going to go through mass urbanization. How do we connect with ourselves and others in more condensed environments? What will our communities look like and will we be active in creating them? I pose the question, “How can we create strong interdependent communities for future population? I wanted to address human interaction in public settings and cohesive communication within cities. (I eventually changed this exact direction to address the root of things)

SURVEY SAYS... WHAT DOES YOUR “IDEAL COMMUNITY” LOOK LIKE? (SOCIAL INTERACTIONS, ENVIRONMENT, ETC... CLOSE YOUR EYES AND IMAGINE!)

“( show ) THE WAY THEIR PRESENCE AFFECTS THAT SPACE (community )” SURVEY I sent out a survey that provided a range of questions surrounding the topic of community. I asked where people felt the most a part of a community. I then asked them to envision their ideal communities. The reponses were intriguing iand showed what we consistently want versus what we actually have and work towards. How do we add to the communities we exist in?

semester 2: research

Every moment is an opportunity to ask questions. Everyone became a source of information. This semesters work was inspired by the previous semesters milestones. The search for community within an urban setting propelled this idea of understanding human interactions and ultimately the source of everyday happiness.

semester 2: research

RESEARCH The forefront of this semester was spent trying to understand human social interaction, values and communities. I spent my time investigating ways to make a morphing design that would help create a valuable experience and allow the user to “be in the moment. It was important to analyze both the users social interactions and also recognize reoccuring patterns in their positive and negative eperiences.

I mapped out responses, topics, words, emotions, values, terminolgy, opinions, facts, quotes and frankly WE FEEL FINE: An Almanac of Human Emotion Sep Kamvar and Jonathan Harris

anything I found that pertained to the topics of people, their hopes & values, interactions, and deal communities,

field research RESEARCH I used several methods to navigate the way we look at the world. There was potential in altering the way we normally look at the world around us.. I began with people in public. What were our social norms why do we follow them? EXPERIMENTS Would you rather survey “Hello Stranger” SMILE CARDS

the psychology of it So what about the psychology of it all. Social, Flourishing, Narcissism and more. A couple classes and several human observation assignments brought me to a space I hadn’t fully embraced yet. I looked through research studies, books and more research studies just trying to understand what brought happiness and positivity to our daily lives.

I soon realized that finding

happiness was not my main goal. Recognizing and sharing the good is ultimately the big idea.

A common theme came from

this part of my research. There was an overlap between group and social identities and the understanding of oneself. There was an importance of acknowledging, sharing and remembering the good things, small or large. By doing so we give ourselves opportunities to experience more positivity by accepting the good.

Count your blessings, what are you thankful for, the mundane to the magnificent?

Savor life’s joys, pay close attention to momentary pleasures and wonders.

respond actively and constructively (and not passively or destructively) to capitalization attempts, the benefits were further enhanced. Two studies found that close relationships in which one’s partner typically responds to capitalization attempts enthusiastically were associated with higher relationship well-being (e.g., intimacy, daily marital satisfaction). The results are discussed in terms of the theoretical and empirical importance of understanding how people “cope” with positive events, cultivate positive GOOD, THE MORE TOLD, emotions, and enhance social bonds.

social support, if and when needed, as one of the major benefits of close relationships (e.g., Cunningham & Barbee, 2000). Without doubt, the processes involved in utilizing social relations to cope with negative events are central to understanding intrapersonal and interpersonal well-being. Nevertheless, this article suggests that another, complementary piece of the puzzle has been largely overlooked: the intrapersonal and interpersonal consequences of seeking out others when good things happen. Although the social sharing of good news has received relatively little attention, research on responses to good fortune has not been entirely lacking. For example, in two daily experience studies, Langston (1994) found that when people shared the news of a positive event with others or celebrated the event in some way, they experienced greater positive affect, beyond increases associated with the valence of the positive event itself. He called this capitalization, a term that we adopt to refer to the process of informing another person about the occurrence of a personal positive event and thereby deriving additional benefit from it. Langston’s findings complement research by Bryant (1989), who found that individual differences in the self-reported ability to savor positive events were correlated with subjective well-being. These studies also complement research by Tesser and his colleagues on the extended self-evaluation maintenance model (e.g., Beach & Tesser, 1995; Tesser, 2000), which demonstrates that reflection processes—that is, the ability to share in a partner’s success— contribute to emotional well-being and relationship satisfaction. The present research seeks to extend these studies by investigating the intrapersonal and interpersonal outcomes associated with capitalizing on positive events. Paralleling existing research on stressors and social support, we examined both the process of seeking a response to one’s good fortune and the impact of perceiving the provision of a positive response.

Good, the more communicated, more abundant grows. —John Milton, Paradise Lost, Book V

The puzzle of well-being has many pieces. One piece that has been the focus of much research is how people maintain or restore their well-being in the face of negative events or stressors. Research has often asked, “What can people do when things go wrong?” and useful answers to this question have come from studies on appraisals (e.g., Folkman, Lazarus, Dunkel-Schetter, Delongis, & Gruen, 1986; Lazarus, 1991), coping (e.g., Bolger, 1990; Carver & Scheier, 1994), and rumination (e.g., NolenHoeksema, 1996, 1998). These and other studies have demonstrated that people routinely turn to others for support in times of stress, be it in the face of everyday stressors (e.g., Harlow & Cantor, 1995) or major life events (e.g., Bolger & Eckenrode, 1991), and that the availability of social support has clear benefits for the support-seeker’s health and well-being (e.g., Sarason, Sarason, & Gurung, 1997; Uchino, Cacioppo, & Kiecolt-Glaser, 1996). Furthermore, people commonly cite the possibility of receiving

inspiration I looked at ways to engage the public through acts of kindness, self engagement methods, and community communication tools. I wanted to see how we had been able to get people motivated to talk about or do something. In a lot of cases I realized that their was either a strong need for a way to get a people to connect or an opportunity to help the individual self cope or contemplate.

“aha” moment What is an “Aha” moment? To me the moment was 3 am on Wednesday when I realized I was thinking to hard about all of this. I sat back and laughed at myself for missing the bigger picture. This project was meant to a certain unconventional something. In my “aha” moment I finally accepted that.

what’s good currently?

I was curious to test out the effects of asking a new set of questions. Lets ask honest questions. What good thing has happened in your day? Better yet, “what bad thing has happened in your day?” You may ask, this is the Good Day project--so why the bad? Think about it. Without one, theother cannot exist. This forces us to dig deeper to find that every day has good in it.

challenge to the public Email, facebook and face to face I invited students, past teachers, college professors, employers, pretty much anyone to partake in thiis 2 week experiment. This is what I recieved Hello, Sabrina here!-You have been a part of my journey thus far and therefore, I am emailing you in hopes that you will partake in my Degree project (thesis) user research. My project is focused on what a good day is for a wide range of people. I have been exploring what opportunities lie in recognizing certain aspects of our day because I believe that every day has good in it. My request is that you keep a log for the next two weeks -April 21th-May 6th- telling me (first) one bad thing and (secondly) one good thing that has happened during your day. Please take note of the date and the time at which you answer these questions Your answers can be sent in the form of text, photos, video and audio recordings to sharewhatsgood@gmail.com or If you plan to use Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, or any social media network please just be sure to tag me. people, through my exercise, to jot down their good days and bad days helped me see reality. Our lives our busy! I am giving people the opportunity to own this task. I am allowing them a simple space to simply say “today was a good day”. The kit allows the user to have

their interpersonal time to GOOD:

reflect. It brings the memories and moments down to a tangible platform.

At the end of the

challenge we ask them to send in a response. As this process

“Award night, mushrooms, chicken, artichoke hearts...” Every day has good in it.
