The week from Sept. 9-16, 2016, officially was designated “National Towing Industry Awareness Week” and entered into the Congressional Record last month.
A statement from Rep. Charles J. “Chuck” Fleischmann of Tennessee read in part, “Mr. Speaker, I rise today to recognize the invaluable contributions of the towing and recovery industry in the United States, the Towing and Recovery Association of America, the International Towing Hall of Fame and Museum, towing associations around the world, and the members of those associations, and to celebrate them.”
The proclamation was presented by Fleischmann at the annual Wall of the Fallen ceremony in Chattanooga, Tenn., on Sept. 10.

Triangle Towing of Ann Arbor, Mich., came to the rescue of yet another truck that hit a railroad bridge over Felch Street. A 13’-tall moving truck smashed into the overpass, which has a posted clearance of 11’ 10”.
“It is fairly common,” said Bill Shaw, GM at Triangle Towing. “We’re out here 10 or 12 times a year. … Theoretically, a professional truck driver is trained to look at the bridge clearances, so I’m not sure what else they could do differently that wouldn’t be obnoxious and unsightly.”
Stewart Beal said he has seen about 20 trucks hit the Felch Street railroad bridge; the worst one being years ago when a driver who wasn’t wearing a seatbelt partially went through the windshield.

Raymond Eugene Clay, 66, owner of RC Towing, died in August and was honored by dozens of Arizona towing companies in a processional.
He established RC Towing in 1983 and received six ACE Awards for excellent service, and was named to the Order of Towman in 2012. “As an industry of towers, we are truly saddened by his loss. … The industry has lost a legend,” said Donna Randall of Randall’s Towing. Survivors include his wife, Lynda L.; daughters Amy Beaudoin and Crystal Carlberg; sons Aaron Neumann and Tony Clay; two sisters and seven grandchildren.

Towman Called Hero on I-95 Accident
A towman is credited with preventing injuries in the harrowing moments after a semi carrying inchthick sheets of glass lost its load on I-95 in Petersburg, Va. Those who saw the glass come smashing down onto the roadway were surprised no one was hurt.
Bubby Bish, with Southside Virginia Emergency Crew, believes the quick thinking of Mark Palmer from B&T Towing in Colonial Heights likely prevented accidents since broken glass was scattered across three southbound lanes as well as nearly 600’ down the northbound lanes.
“Looked to me like, at first, smoke,” Bish said. “Then all of a sudden I felt the glass debris hit my vehicle.” Bish turned on his red lights and surveyed the area. Then he spotted a B&T tow truck in the northbound lanes.
“I merged over to the left shoulder,” Palmer said, “came around traffic and blocked two and a half to three lanes of traffic, just to keep people from driving through it.”
Bish said, “To me, he made a big difference in the scene. To me, he’s a hero.”
