All the careful cutting of painter’s tape to get those curves really paid off! An IKEA dresser I painted and a rug from Rugs USA add some color. When their grandkids aren’t sleeping here, Portland, OR, homeowners LauraLee and Bill Symes take turns lounging on the built-in bed with a book. “Including the bed in our house plans made the most of our spare room’s odd angles,” says LauraLee. There’s even storage beneath for extra linens. They amped up the warmth with a fringed rug from Rejuvenation and a vintage chair and stool.

Clever ideas for turning untapped space into a totally tempting little haven.
carve out a workstation To chic up this niche—and inspire her kids to do their schoolwork—in her family’s home in the Netherlands, design influencer Mary Marrero painted the wall Hague Blue by Farrow & Ball. Then she slid in a desk and chair and hung prints, mostly from IKEA. “I’ve always seen gallery walls going up stairs,” says Mary. “Going beneath makes every inch count!” Bonus cool points for one frame propped up against the wall.
set up a bar “This area, which is part of a large entertaining room in a house in North Haven, NY, used to be empty, so we had the idea to continue the bar cabinets from around the corner,” says designer Timothy Godbold. He maxed out wall space by varying the lengths of the reclaimed oak shelves, where bottles and glasses look fab shown off. Even the way they’re arranged (alternating bottles and glasses, plus a group on a tray) has style.

So when building an addition to this 1730s Ipswich, MA, home for a client, the team framed out an alcove for the family dogs, complete with a place for a bed and shelves for their basket of toys and an extra food bowl. (Happy pooch Dahli, an Australian cattle dog, is just visiting.) It’s finished with the same vertical wall paneling that’s on the stairs for a seamless look.
Blogger Joni Lay shares this Ellaville, GA, weekend house with her sister. “As our babies became toddlers, we needed an area for them to play that was within sight of the sofas but didn’t take over the living room,” she says. The corner under the stairs was totally open, and they swapped the buffet that had been there for bookshelves, toys, and a chalkboard. The kid-size armchairs and circular table with bookshelves are from RH Baby & Child. Says Joni, “The kids love cozying up in here—and the grown-ups do too!”

how bad is it to carry your dog instead of making him walk?
GETTY IMAGES
Paws to the ground, please. “Dogs need to walk on a leash to get exercise and be able to stop and smell the world,” says Khara Schuetzner, chair of The Association of Professional Dog Trainers. When you take a puppy for a stroll, they learn to feel comfortable on different textures and in different settings, and they build up their leg muscles, too (those develop until age 2). If your dog resists moving, take a few steps back, encourage him to walk to you, and repeat until he gets in the rhythm. If you sometimes pick up your pup for an on-the-go snuggle, also do it at different times of the day or he’ll associate cuddles with walks—and toting 15-pound Augie home from the dog park will become your workout routine instead of his.

how bad is it to microwave food in a wood bowl? It’s safest to stick with glass bowls or ones labeled “microwave-safe.” Why? Wood heats differently in the microwave than other type of materials because it is porous and can absorb moisture from food, says Bob Schiffmann, president of the International Microwave Power Institute. Nuke last night’s leftovers in a walnut bowl and it could be very hot to the touch when you take it out. The situation could become even more heated if you’re zapping crunchy stuff, like nachos on game day. “Since dry foods are poor absorbers of microwave energy, the bowl could char and smoke before you realize what’s happening,” says Schiffmann. That blast of heat could dry out the wood or warp it. It’s the same reason to never pop your pretty wood bowl in the oven or dishwasher.
REALLY BAD!
Even if you don’t lose sleep over bedhead, routinely hitting the sack with soggy strands isn’t a great idea. “A warm, wet pillow creates a hotbed for fungus to grow, increasing your risk of an inflamed, itchy scalp or dandruff,” says Gretchen Friese, a trichologist (a.k.a. scalp specialist) and hair stylist in Denver, CO. Since hair is at its weakest when wet, you risk breakage as you toss and turn—and that can lead to frizz. If there’s not enough time to let your hair air-dry before bedtime or if yours is in braids, consider spritzing on a leave-in conditioner after you shower. Popular kinds include It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-In Product and Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla Leave-In Conditioner. Or maybe this is your moment to become a morning-shower person.

how bad is it to never change the vacuum filter? “Can you wait a little longer than the manual recommends? Sure, you probably won’t cause damage—but the cleaner the filter, the stronger the suction,” says Carolyn Forté, director of the Home Appliances & Cleaning Products Lab at the Good Housekeeping Institute. Who wants to run a nozzle over the same potato chip crumbs six times? If you rely on a HEPA filter to gather allergens, though, getting into a filter-maintenance groove is key—without good airflow, you’re literally just kicking up dust. Easy ways to remember to do it: Clean washable filters at the start of each season, and replace nonwashable ones at least twice yearly or whenever you change the clocks. Meanwhile, if you’re up against a major mess like a dropped bag of flour or scattered kibble, spare your filter and reach for a broom and dustpan first.
Hello? It’s your filter talking. Remember me?
REALLY BAD!
While there will always be callers who deserve verbal reciprocation—Hi, boss! Hi, Mom!—usually a “Saw you called, what’s up?” text is perfectly fine, says Pamela Rutledge, a media scientist in Newport Beach, CA, who studies the impact of technology. This is actually a nice thing to do when you’re not able to return a friend’s call promptly. Since technology has conditioned us to anticipate a speedy reply, says Rutledge, “How quickly you respond can be interpreted as how much you prioritize both the call and the caller.” Don’t guilt yourself if you’re opting out of a conversation because you’re not in the mood. “It’s understandable, given today’s stressors, and an important step in self-care to recognize when you have to unplug and recharge yourself,” says Rutledge. One time it’s best not to text back: when responding to professional contacts you aren’t close with. “Some people will be uncomfortable receiving a text from someone they don’t know well,” she says.

Woodsy goes chic in this lakeside Georgia getaway.
CHRISTINA WEDGE
Fireplaces surrounded by stone can sometimes look dark and heavy. This hex tile by Daltile has the opposite effect—and it adds a fun pattern.

lthough designer Chip Wade has done more than 2,000 renovations, he’d never tackled a log cabin before buying this one in Milledgeville, GA, with his wife, Pauli. “I am not one to shy away from a challenge, but I did have some things to learn about log walls!” says Chip. The 2,300-square-foot house, built in 1988, needed updating; Chip replaced the roof, flooring, windows, and doors, doing most of the labor himself, with help from his dad. And then, he rethought rustic. Instead of going all-out wood-tastic, he stained the exterior logs charcoal gray. Inside, he contrasted roughhewn cabin elements with color and pattern. The couple named their place Misty Mill, after Pauli’s grandmother’s house in the town of Misty Mountain in North Carolina (“Mill” is short for Milledgeville). “The overall feel is a little whimsical and a little ’50s sleepaway camp,” says Chip. What better combo for a lakeside family getaway?
Chip installed new European white oak flooring throughout the house.

kitchen Exposed beams and candelabra-esque chandeliers by St. James Lighting are pure cabin—but the gorgeous green island (painted Foxhall Green by SherwinWilliams) and one-of-a-kind backsplash pattern by Daltile stand out as fresh and modern. The counter stools bring together the wood and metal elements in the space.

The wall is the star here. Before, the chinking—the material that fills the gaps between the logs— was light brown. Redoing it in white created a crisp contrast. A console from Wayfair hides extra seating (by Arhaus) in plain sight. Chip’s sister Dena made the art.

sitting area In the mornings, this section of the living room is where Chip and Pauli have coffee while the kids sip their own version—hot chocolate with a splash of coffee. At night, it’s card game territory. The cabinetry under the TV holds art supplies, books, and Chip’s miscellaneous hardware. He paired cozy armchairs by Arhaus with Windsorstyle chairs that are easy to move around. A starburst light fixture made of weathered oak by Generation Lighting has rustic cred.
main bedroom “When I was refinishing the western hemlock beams on the ceiling, I noticed the crossties were spaced at the exact length of a king bed and thought, Here’s my chance to have a hanging bed,” says Chip. “It feels light and airy.” Instead of matching nightstands (too formal), he did stacked trunks from an Army Navy store on one side and an open shelf unit on the other.

guest bathroom “This bathroom is a guest favorite,” says Chip. “People really take their time in that shower!” The industrial-style door, by Coastal Shower Doors, is made of aluminum so it won’t rust. Black sinks by Kohler are another cool touch: “Black is an underused aesthetic decision—it has the potential to bring instant sophistication to a space,” he says. The rug in front of the vanity is a T.J. Maxx find.
exterior The original western hemlock logs that make up the house are various sizes—some are more than 40 continuous feet long! With sanding and staining, they look good as new.
Chip got a ďŹ repit from American Fyre Designs and clad it in the same stone and pavers he used on the retaining walls, from Belgard. With chairs from Frontgate, this spot is s’mores central.

K
erri Pilchik isn’t afraid to mix things up—in the rooms of her home or in life. After 14 years working as a lawyer, she decided to go all in with her passion for interior design and started juggling classes while caring for her two kids. One of her very first projects: a fourbedroom, 2,400-square-foot Colonial in Ridgewood, NJ, that she and her husband, James, bought. Built in 1920, it had excellent period details, including high baseboard moldings and built-in cabinetry. “I wanted to bring that charm into the 21st century,” says Kerri. A blend of bold colors, a lot of pattern play, and fun flourishes made it happen. Statement fabrics were also a thing: “If there’s a window, nine times out of ten I’m using fabric around it,” she says. While holding true to the house’s original design, this bright and welcoming space is living proof that sometimes, the road not taken turns out to be the one that leads you home.

The chandelier is by Foscarini.

kitchen At 138 square feet, it’s not the largest, but Kerri gave it major presence. She had the upper cabinets painted Simply White and the lower ones Coventry Gray, both by Benjamin Moore, for contrast. Extending the tile to the ceiling gave the illusion of height; an expanse of white quartz countertops with gray veining opened up the space. The Roman shade, made with Schumacher fabric, is there for the cheer.

The oversize window is what Kerri calls a “fun free-for-all”—it holds a rotating display of vases, souvenirs, and the kids’ art.

you don’t need a contractor, just… try a totally new shape of light When you have only one ceiling light box for a fixture, a wide style like this delivers four times the light—and the chicness! upgrade your cabinet knobs and pulls
dress up a window with a punchy shade
Knobs are easiest because one size fits all. When changing pulls, simplify things by getting newbies that are the same width as the old ones to avoid a patch-and-drill job. Find lots of options for both at Rejuvenation, CB2, and Lowe’s.
If you have basic blinds, replace them with a Roman shade. You can have it made in a cool pattern. Companies like The Shade Store, Smith & Noble, or Calico make customizing easy.
