LOVE YOUR LAUNDRY TURNING ROUTINES INTO RITUALS Our laundries are no longer the draughty washrooms of old. Just like kitchens, they have evolved from purely functional spaces at the back of the home to occupy a central place in people’s lives. Daily chores have been replaced by the idea of rituals. Aided by technology and design, we’ve seen a trend in re-imagining what used to be an endless cycle of soaking, washing, drying, ironing and folding as an opportunity. Designed to match no matter how you configure them, each individual appliance is designed to be part of a holistic laundry system. Fisher & Paykel washing machines and dryers have pre-programmed cycles that complement each other, offering exceptional fabric care, water and energy savings, and drying performance. Whether you prefer a front or top-loading machine to go with any of our three dryer types, there is a perfect pair made just for your beautiful laundry.

EDITOR’S LETTER HEART OF THE HOME I absolutely adore cooking. It’s how I relax, get creative and spoil my loved ones. And, while my kitchen is lovely, truth be told I’d really like to redo it. More benchspace, a bigger oven, a Frenchdoor fridge! I can spend hours drawing up plans and making Pinterest boards of my dream space, so it was a joy, this issue, to curate some of the most beautiful kitchens we’ve seen lately. Each one has its own brilliant ideas. For example, pocket doors – you know, the doors that slide into a recess. I love how they can be used to separate or open up zones within a room, for example, a butler’s pantry or a sneaky bar off the kitchen. Then there’s the materials palette. Timber? Stone? High gloss? Matte-finish? It can be hard to make a choice. It is a big investment. My advice is to collect as many pictures as you can of kitchens that you love and then look to see if there are common threads. You might find that rather than the all-white design you thought you wanted, you’ve collected a whole lot of navy blue kitchen images. The same trick can be used for any room in the home. Living rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms… speaking of which, this month, you’ll find some truly stunning bathrooms to pore over, too. Our kitchen and bathroom special, which begins on page 143, is jam-packed with design advice, style tricks and the best buys for you to get the look at your place. Now, to round off our trio of the most hard-working rooms in a home: the laundry. We’ve created a handy collection of stylish spaces to inspire, both large and compact (page 120), and should you be in the market for new appliances, we’ve paired up with Harvey Norman to give you all the info on the latest washing machines and dryers from page 47. Whether you’re actively renovating or looking for simple decorating tips to help update what you have, I hope this issue gives you food for thought. PARED-BACK PALETTE pg 38

summer lovin'

Designed by New York-based firm ASH NYC, this puffy indoor ‘Pillow Chair’ might be the luxe pop of colour your home needs this summer. Inspired by the glamour of the 1960s Italian Riviera, the vibrant chair embodies lazy summer days spent in the sun. This wish-list piece can be pre-ordered from Studio Alm, from $4290, studioalm.com.

A THWARTED PLAN TO BECOME A FURNITURE MAKER LED ELISA BARTELS TO START HER ARTISAN CERAMIC HOMEWARES AND SCULPTURE BUSINESS IN SYDNEY How was Elisa Bartels Designs born? Elisa: “I wanted to be a furniture maker, but discovered the best place to do so was Tasmania – but we couldn’t move there. Furniture-making combines art and functionality, and I found these same qualities in ceramics.” What makes your products special? “I don’t glaze my work, I use saggar firing: I put my work in tins with organic material, such as sawdust, seaweed, a mix of leaves, snakeskin and feathers, and the carbon released from the organic matter colours the clay.” Do you have a personal favourite from your own range? “My dinner plate. It takes a piece of Vegemite toast to Master Chef levels!” What’s next for your brand? “Along with an essential oil burner, I am refining the concept and design of my black fired tiles. I have visions of them being used in bathrooms and kitchens, both inside and out. I’d love to collaborate and am putting out feelers to interior and landscape designers.” What are your top tips for caring for artisan ceramics? “I want to create ‘modern heirlooms’ that are used daily, loved, cherished and passed on to future generations. This means that they have to be able to take the rough and tumble of the family home. I tell my clients, ‘If you have the time, it’s best to hand wash them. But if it’s a crazy day, put them in the dishwasher. If they chip, you’ve added your voice to the story of that object’.” Shop the range at elisabartels.com.

hen the world went quiet during 2020’s global pandemic lockdown, abstract expressionist artist Ashleigh Holmes discovered a new way to lend a voice to her canvas. “It all happened during isolation; I was really curious as to why particular colours affect the way we feel,” she explains. “I began studying an online course on ‘The Psychology of Colour Symbolism,’ [and learned] it’s about picking tones that can radiate a more natural, calming aura, and put people in a space of contentment rather than a conflict.” Her latest sold-out show, titled ‘This Must be the Place’, which debuted online earlier this year, alludes to the sense of stillness and gratitude she found in isolation at her light-filled studio in Sydney’s northern beaches. “I’ve been utilising this time to create some pieces that are based

Ashleigh’s abstract portrayal of the natural land, which she brings to life with soft, earthy pastels, proves that realism isn’t always the clearest lens for capturing a moment. The artist first honed her brush skills in her spare time while working as a national sales manager at Australian fashion label Maurie and Eve. It wasn’t until her boss came across a series of her paintings on Instagram that she began to pursue her painting full-time. “[My boss] understood that you need to allow time and space to be creative and encouraged me to focus on my art,” she says. Four years later and she’s working full-time from what she describes as her “messy” studio, painting to the growling beat of ’90s grunge music: a startling contrast to the soft, dreamy canvases that are scattered across the entire

I want [my work] to transport the viewer to that space.” Capturing place and time has long been an influence for Ashleigh, whose abstract, unrefined paintings are inspired by the natural landscape. A fourth-generation artist, she often reflects on the many stories that have been passed down by her grandmother, Glenys. “She painted a lot of traditional Australian landscapes,” she recalls. “There weren’t as many photographers back then, so the artists at the time were trying to replicate what was actually being viewed. TOUCHES OF RATTAN BRING AN EARTHINESS TO THE ROOM, WITH A MURAL-STYLE PAPER ADDING GREENERY

SPECIAL FEATURE This study may be sparsely furnished, yet it’s

barely noticeable thanks to the dramatic printed wallpaper (the ‘Tarrano’ mural wallpaper in Craie from French company Pierre Frey). While the wallpaper includes shades of taupe and grey similar to the living room, the landscape-inspired print introduces a subtle touch of green that plays well with the rattan furniture and the ‘oak’ engineered timber flooring.

OPTICAL ILLUSION Painting a piece of furniture the same

colour as the walls, such as with the drawers above, will help it visually recede so the space feels larger. To further amplify this effect, the bedhead, linens and flooring are all shades of white, creating a similar effect. This design technique not only makes small rooms feel more generous, it also makes large furniture pieces seem less imposing. >

LAYER UPON LAYER Layering is the most

important aspect of every successful neutral scheme. Too little will make your home feel one-dimensional, while too much overwhelms the eye. Here, the wall panelling is balanced with artwork framed in simple transparent glass, heavy patterned curtains and a woven bench seat with cushions that say comfort.

HOMES

STORY COURTESY OF BUREAUX

THE ENTERTAINER Family life was at the heart of the

decisions made by homeowner and interior designer Simone when she renovated her stunning home in Cape Town, South Africa, for herself, her husband, Richard, and their sons, Cole, 10, and Connor, seven. Working with architect Peter Cohen, Simone created this alfresco lounge, adjacent to the indoor living area, with as much thought as she gave to the interiors. She designed the timber coffee table and oak couch, which is upholstered in classic navy and piped in white, and added armchairs from Arteriors to soften the look. Wooden chairs with slatted backs from Tribu are a chic match (the ‘Breu’ outdoor lounge from Coco Republic is similarly stylish). >

a custom fit

Reupholstering existing furniture ensures perfect colour matching to get the look you want. Here, in the main lounge area, Simone opted to reupholster her existing sofa in Belgian linen from Warwick Fabrics to complement the darker-coloured grey couch. Cushion covers were custom-made in fabrics from Mavromac. Visit warwick.com.au.

LIVING ROOM Luxe combines with relaxation

in the lounge that sits in the newly added wing of the home. A sublime sofa – designed by Simone and upholstered in pale grey Belgian linen from Warwick Fabric, topped with patterned scatter cushions covered in a selection of linen fabrics from Mavromac – is a chic contrast to the darker grey couch and chaise from Molteni & C. The glass-topped coffee table from Cecile & Boyd (see the ‘Anikka’ coffee table at My Furniture for similar) contributes lustre to the room. And that sweetly silhouetted cat sculpture? It’s by Dylan Lewis from Ralph Lauren Home.

M

y projects tell a story,” explains homeowner and interior designer Simone, as she drinks in the view from the spacious verandah of the home she recently renovated for her family, which includes husband Richard and their boys, Cole, 10, and Connor, seven. The story of this unique home has unfolded gently over time, following the young family’s move to a verdant suburb of Cape Town and a home they lived in for two years before work started. Named ‘Summer Planes’ in homage to the plane trees that grace the property’s spacious garden, this classical-style home was propelled into the 21st century thanks to the owners’ collaboration with Johannesburg-based architect Peter Cohen. With simple geometric lines and pared-back forms, the home now melds timeless architectural elegance with interiors that reflect the chic homeowner’s eye for restrained colour, layers of natural textures and just the right amount of unique detail. Peter, says Simone, has a “genuinely special sense of space and proportion”. An interior designer for five years, she was keen to work with the architect to create a home for her family to love. And the resulting transformation has been dramatic: gone is the incongruous circular entrance hall, an abundance of ’90s-style lime green and some era-defining terracotta tiled floors. The 14-month renovation yielded a square entrance hall and an extra wing at one end of the house, with the latter containing both outdoor and indoor living spaces on the ground floor, as well as a new main bedroom on the first floor nestled among the trees, evoking the feeling of a contemporary tree house. During the extensive project, the family set up temporary home in an adjacent garden cottage in the grounds (now the perfect spot to accommodate visiting grandparents), to ensure Simone was on hand

for daily decision-making as project manager, enabling her to capture the perfect marriage between design elements and furnishings. “The space around things is key,” she explains. “I love beautiful things, but there must never be too many of them in a room.” A former fashion buyer who worked in the fashion department at Tatler magazine in London during the early 2000s, Simone returned to South Africa to launch her own fashion business, which taught her “how to deal with colour, feel and texture”, she says. And it is this combination that is the secret to making this grand home feel welcoming and relaxed. It’s a sophisticated (note the silk curtains) yet fun (hello, Astroturf putting green on the balcony for the couple’s sons) sanctuary for a creative family of four. Here, every design element was chosen to suit the needs and wants of every family member. No wonder, then, that Simone describes this beautifully renovated abode as “our happy space”.

BAR LOUNGE

COFFEE TABLE DETAIL

Architect Peter Cohen joined forces with Simone to create the bar lounge as an inviting space for relaxing and recharging . A wall of windows above the sofa bathes the space (top left) in natural light, which is boosted by all the reflective surfaces in the room, including the small black side table with mirrored top (get the look with the ‘Adriel’ mirrored side table from Mirror City), the metallic tall table by the sofa and the glass coffee table (see the ‘Verve’ coffee table from Fantastic Furniture for a match). The table by the window has been elegantly styled with a white antique Chinese vessel and a table lamp from Ralph Lauren Home, while the amber glass vessel from Zara Home offers a playful pop of colour in a neutral scheme. On the opposite wall (not shown) is built-in shelving for a range of books, which fulfils the owner’s brief for a very modern combination of bar and library.

Simone knows how to mix high-end pieces with affordable homewares for a luxe result. On the table (left) is her collection of elegant treasures, which includes a white vase from La Grange Interiors, a tray from Zara Home and a H&M Home candle. The posy of blooms in a William Yeoward crystal tumbler completes the vignette. KITCHEN

The owners designed the kitchen with architect Peter, and had the elegantly inset bespoke joinery built by design service Malco. Kitchen appliances and cupboard storage have been cleverly integrated into the joinery for a fully seamless look that doesn’t compete with the clean architecture within the home. The kitchen island bench in Caesarstone acts as a landing zone in the centre. Beside the Lacanche cooker is a cream pot from Le Creuset, while a green bowl from Zara Home adds a sweet and stylish touch.

DINING ROOM With timber flooring supplied by Oggie Hardwood Flooring and French doors that open onto the verandah and garden, the formal dining room is a timeless space with a strong connection between indoors and out. The grown-ups’ table and softly padded chairs, designed by Simone, allow dinner parties to linger into the evening, and the pendant lights from Glo Lighting elegantly zone the area. The gilded frame mirror provides a heritage nod and was sourced from an antique store in France. >

MAIN BEDROOM

The couple’s divine bedroom (opposite) has five-star written all over it with the gorgeous four-poster bed that was designed by Simone, specifically for the room. (For a similar style available locally, see the ‘Quincy’ upholstered bed from The Bedroom.) The room has been cleverly created with expansive windows to give it a ‘glass box’ feel that suspends the space in the treetops. Classic-look bedside tables and the gorgeous bench at the foot of the bed, upholstered in ‘Miroir’ by Pierre Frey, which was also used on the bolster of the bed, add to the room’s resort appeal. ENSUITE

The couple’s beautiful ensuite, sitting off the main bedroom (above & right), operates as a bathroom and dressing room, with built-in cupboards and a vanity area that Simone designed herself. Fluted oak on the cupboard fronts matched with handles sourced

from The Beardmore Collection is as graceful as it is sleekly functional, while the inviting bamboo chair was a delightful find from a local vintage store. The massive freestanding bath from Victorian Bathrooms is elegantly curved and is a sartorial match for the Duravit benchtop basins and tasteful tapware by Italian company Nicolazzi. “This bathroom gave me great joy to create,” recalls Simone, with a smile. “It’s also lovely having a large window that brings in natural light and the beautiful view of the magnolia trees.” DRESSING ROOM DETAIL

In the adjoining dressing room, the owner has arranged a collection of some of her most treasured items (top right) for a very personal display that includes crystals, a few favourite jewellery pieces (including pearls she received from her mother) and an ornate perfume atomiser from the fragrance house Penhaligon’s. >

A nautical theme was created for Connor’s bedroom, where model boats from a stall at Hout Bay Craft Market in Cape Town (try eBay or Gumtree for similar) set the scene. Simone designed the matching headboards (top left) and a desk by Frag provides Connor with a quiet place to study. The wall lighting came from Ralph Lauren Home.

Cole and the family's dog, Benjamin, relax on the blue corner couch from Simone’s own brand (get the look with the ‘Sunny’ sofa in Indigo from Jardan) in the informal living room (above). The custom-built shelving was designed by Simone together with architect Peter, creating a place to display the family’s treasured books and pieces, without having to sacrifice floor space for extra furniture.

PUTTING GREEN

Joined to the boys’ playroom and bedrooms lies a mini putting green (left). “The first floor balcony was a dead space and, with my boys being avid golfers, I decided on a putting green,” explains their mother of the outdoor mini-golf green. “I wanted them to use the area on weekends to spend hours playing with friends.” Here, Cole (on the left) and Connor (centre) put in some practice time on their swings with father Richard.

DREAM WORK FINDING THE RIGHT TEAM HELPED TRANSFORM THIS HERITAGE SYDNEY ABODE INTO A CHIC AND MODERN SANCTUARY FOR THE FAMILY THAT CALLS IT HOME Story SARAH WORMWELL Styling ASHLEY PRATT Photography SIMON WHITBREAD

HOMES

AT FIRST SIGHT It was the exterior of this home on Sydney’s north shore that first captivated MJ (pictured above) and her husband, Andrew

– the classic lines and details were reminiscent of homes in Adelaide, where the couple grew up. The home provides myriad spots to grab a book, from the renovated rear to the living room (opposite), where the couple and their three children also cosy up to watch TV. One of only two rooms in the home not painted white, the grey walls (in 25 per cent Salt by Murobond) add warmth. “This room needed to feel cosier than the rest and the grey walls do that,” explains interior designer Viv Hannigan, who left cornices and the skirting in white. “It is a gentle way for old to meet new.” For MJ, the room’s meeting of styles is timeless. “The mesh chandelier, (Moooi ‘Meshmatics’ from Space Furniture) references traditional lighting but with modern material; it’s one of my favourite pieces because it combines my dual loves of antiques and iconic modern style,” she says. >

DINING AND LIVING ROOM The original arched hallway entrance to the rear of the home had been boxed in by the previous owners. Restoring the arch was one of the initial design decisions made by MJ, designer Viv and project architect Imogene Potter. Functionally, the move allowed a lot more light to stream into the space, but it also provided a ‘motif’ for the rest of the interiors. “We didn’t set out to choose curved edges, but in hindsight I can understand why I was instinctively drawn to the curved edge of the dining table and the spherical pendant,” explains MJ. The crowd-pleasing table from Poliform is matched with modern Elementi lights by De Padova from Boffi.

D

appled leadlighting, shingled roofing and a chic, elegant exterior were enough to make MJ fall in love with this Federation home on Sydney’s lower north shore, even before she took a single step inside. “I was sitting in my car waiting for the open inspection and, without going inside, I knew that it could be perfect for us,” she recalls. “My husband Andrew and I grew up in Adelaide, and the home was so evocative of the city’s beautiful bluestones that I knew he would love it as much as I did.” MJ and Andrew bought the property in 2014, and moved in with their children Alexandra, now 13, Kate, 12, and Jack, 10. Accompanying MJ on that first visit to the home was her friend, interior designer Viv Hannigan. The two immediately began planning how the interiors could be transformed; while the exterior was gorgeous, the layout and lack of indoor-outdoor connection were not ideal. As a first step, MJ started working on updating the 1980s palette of pine floors and turmeric-hued walls, always with a longterm plan to renovate. MJ and Andrew began meeting with architects and were impressed by Imogene Potter from Potter & Wilson, who had a love of period houses and a collaborative approach. “I wanted an architect who would let me be involved in the process,” explains MJ. “I had definite ideas, but needed someone to enhance them and bring them to reality. When I met Imogene it just felt right.” So began the three-way collaboration between MJ, Imogene and Viv. Weekly meetings, myriad phone calls, studio visits and Pinterest boards ensued, all with the central vision of creating a home offering

a greater indoor-outdoor connection and making each room both usable and family-friendly. Imogene’s creative design “untangled” the convoluted flow across the ground floor, removing walls, expanding the kitchen and reorientating the staircase to create a broad central hallway and spacious entrance. Upstairs, the bedroom count increased from two to three, with each child given an ensuite. The greatest structural transformation, however, occurred at the rear of the home, where new batwing doors were designed, opening through to a vast external courtyard encompassing an outdoor lounge, barbecue and fireplace. Extensive landscaping was also undertaken. Imogene and Viv both credit MJ as the driver of the aesthetic. The homeowner, who calls her style “classic modern”, wanted her interiors to feel contemporary but respectful of the home’s history, with the restored archway at the end of the entrance hallway becoming a key component: the curve is repeated subtly through the home, from the kitchen bench and stairway detail to the dining table and desk joinery, creating a continuous design language. Meanwhile, the interior palette of white walls and dark timber herringbone floors is a harmonious backdrop for rich walnut and brass and muted accent colour. Furnishing the home was also a combined effort, with the careful curation of modern classics that bring together old and new to create an overall sense of timelessness – and the beautiful outcome is a true testament to the value of teamwork. “Taking a collaborative approach has brought everything together so well,” says MJ. “Our home has a wonderful family feel and we are thrilled with the result.”

KITCHEN “I contemplated hanging

a linear pendant light over the kitchen bench, but in the end I didn’t want anything impacting the view − I look straight out onto the terrace and can see all the action,” explains MJ, pictured. For Andrew, high-backed stools for the kitchen bench were a must. “It sounds simple, but finding a stool that didn’t overwhelm the bench was difficult,” says MJ. After a long search, interior designer Viv found the ‘Broom’ stool at Contempo and Co. The American oak and leather with brass detailing work perfectly with the scheme and met the brief for hard-wearing elegance. >

bar style

The 3.5-metre kitchen island bench has a dual purpose: everyday family dinners and occasional grown-up cocktail parties. MJ was inspired by the charm of old-school hotel lounges, so Imogene designed an opulent-edged Carrara marble benchtop, with a ribbed timber base in warm walnut. The traditional brass footrail was another “borrowed” idea from retro hotel style.

warmer months, the new batwing doors create a direct link to the outdoor terrace, inviting people to the pool and garden beyond. “From the outset I knew this house would be perfect for us if we could better connect indoors and out, and this room is proof Imogene nailed the brief,” says MJ. The homeowner and design team agreed that all-white walls would help modernise the home’s heritage features. “Viv really helped me see how colour and texture could help draw the home into the present,” explains MJ of the beautiful combination of a Minotti Andersen ‘Quilt’ three-seater lounge and two ‘Mad’ chairs from Poliform – ideal for conversation – grounded by the ‘Radiate’ rug in Rose from The Rug Establishment. During winter, the restored fireplace often acts as a focal point. “The original mantel was a Belgium rouge marble; it was beautiful, but didn’t work in the new scheme,” recalls MJ. “On a quick trip to Melbourne I saw a fireplace restoration shop from a taxi. I pulled over and ended up organising to swap our rouge mantel for the gorgeous Carrara marble one that suits our home much better.” >

floor, the children’s bedrooms were greatly expanded, giving each one their own ensuite and custom joinery. The renovation also unexpectedly gave son Jack, pictured above left, the best view in the house. “People always ask why we didn’t claim Jack’s room for ourselves, but I’m really happy with the layout − it works well to have all the kids together,” says MJ. Designed by Imogene, Jack’s desktop, in Grey Pail by Dulux, has the same curved motif that’s repeated throughout the home. MJ and Viv opted for the leather desk chair from Freedom because it added a more masculine texture to the room. “Jack loves it, mainly because it swivels,” explains his mother, with a smile.

MJ & ANDREW’S HOME

Who lives here? MJ and her husband, Andrew, both with backgrounds in the property industry; along with their three children, Alexandra, 13, Kate, 12, and Jack, 10. Best advice for renovating? MJ: “Get all your selections done and stay true to your design loves. Work with a good team who share your vision: take advice, but also trust your instincts.” What is the key to establishing a great team? “Invest time at the beginning of the process to meet with different professionals. Trust your instincts as to whether you’ll be able to work together.” Most-commented-on feature of the house? “Definitely the kitchen bar, but the high ceilings also get a lot of mentions.” Biggest renovating surprise? “How much they ripped the house apart. They really had to tear it to pieces to build it back up again.”

A COUPLE AND THEIR CHILDREN MAKE A FRESH START IN THEIR CALM AND COLOURFUL HOME ON VICTORIA’S COASTLINE, A PLACE RICH WITH FAMILY TIES Story TONYA TURNER Styling AMBER LENETTE Photography CAITLIN MILLS NEW BEGINNINGS Homeowners Alex and Bobby were comfortable in their Melbourne digs when the opportunity to buy Alex’s family vineyard on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula came up. As they built what was intended to be an investment property on site, the beautiful natural landscape and rural lifestyle close to the sea beckoned. “We loved it so much our plans kept changing,” says Alex. Their hearts eventually won, and the couple packed up their city lives with daughters Quincy, two, and baby Pearl (pictured above, with Alex, near custom floating cabinets and silvertop ash cladding from Everist Timber) to begin a new chapter. The patio (opposite), says Alex is “one of my favourite little spots around the house.” Here, wisteria climbs the timber posts from Peninsula Recycled Timber, which overlook their vineyard, now managed by Paringa Estate. >

eturning to her family roots was something that homeowner Alex never thought she would do. Growing up on acreage on Victoria’s coastline, south of Melbourne, had its perks – roaming paddocks, caring for animals on her mum’s mini-farm, visits to the seaside – but by the time she was a teenager, she couldn’t wait to hightail it out of there and head for the city. It wasn’t until Alex and her partner Bobby stayed with her parents at her old family home a few years ago (when renovating their Melbourne home) that things started to change. “A seed was planted when we were down here, and then when I had [daughter] Quincy I really felt a pull to get out of the city,” says Alex. “When you have a kid you suddenly have a longing for space and something a bit more peaceful for them.” When her mum decided to sell the family’s nearby vineyard – a dream project she had carefully brought to life over several decades – Alex knew that embracing the past was part of her future. “I felt quite attached to this block because of the family history and I couldn’t imagine it going to someone else who might rip the vines out,” says Alex, who began planning a new build on site. Originally designed as a weekender and investment property, the home features an earthy suite of new and recycled materials including rustic timbers, concrete, bricks and even an old railway bridge. “I didn’t want everything to feel shiny and new,” says Alex. “I wanted it to feel like this place had been here forever.” Picture windows throughout the home frame views of the valleys, rolling hillsides and grape plantation. As co-founder of designer homewares and fashion label Kip & Co, Alex wove her love of colour and texture into the interiors with an eclectic twist, combining vintage items and op-shop finds with custom-built furniture, luxe statement pieces and textural touches. Wanting to celebrate rather than compete with the natural setting, however, she had to exercise restraint. “In our last house we had coloured walls and gold cabinets, there was a lot going on,” she explains. “Here, I wanted something calming, that was my overarching vision.” For Alex and Bobby, it was about creating a warm and relaxed home where they can work, rest and play as their two little girls grow. One of their favourite things to do together is gather kindling for the fire and forage for wild pine mushrooms, which Bobby whips up into risottos and stroganoffs. “I don’t really cook, but Bobby has totally embraced the MasterChef role in the house,” laughs Alex. Joining the region’s fresh food movement, they have also planted a growing vegie patch filled with lettuce, turnips, rhubarb, kale and garlic. Successful harvests and baked goods are regularly traded with neighbours. “It’s a beautiful community,” reflects Alex. “I see it in a completely different light now.”

LIVING ROOM A square picture window frames the vineyard and

the natural landscape from the sun-drenched living room. When days and nights get cool, the couple lights the Lopi Evergreen wood fireplace from Mr Gasman. Bright cushions from Kip & Co add touches of sunshine to vintage armchairs from Grandfather’s Axe, the ‘Sunny’ couch from Jardan and the brick bench seat with hidden storage. “I love sneaky storage like that,” says Alex, of the space that stores alcohol. “It’s stashed away from the kids so it’s a good spot for it.” The Paloma coffee table by Sarah Ellison and rug bought on Ebay bring in added texture. >

On a trip to Bali, Alex fell head over heels for tiles she saw at a bar. “They had all these different shades in the tiles and I really loved it,” she says. “It was done so beautifully and there was lots of variation in the colours and that’s what I liked.” Although they were blue, Alex wanted to achieve the same effect in pink so chose Nazari ‘Rabat’ ceramic tiles from Earp Bros. the street (opposite), Mieke and Brett’s home looks like it could be in a leafy Hamptons hamlet on the US East Coast when, in fact, it’s on a sprawling block on Queensland’s Gold Coast. For Mieke, building the abode marked the realisation of her long-held dream to create a “homely Hamptons-inspired forever home”, where the couple could raise their children, Georgia, 13, and Diesel, 12. “Arches were a key feature,” says Mieke of the spacious doorways opening through onto balconies. The most striking is the arched clerestory window above the front door, which floods the entrance with natural light and draws the eye upwards, to where a Klaylife pendant hangs like a piece of art. >

KITCHEN Mieke had a clear vision of how her dream kitchen

would look and function. Central to the design is an island topped in durable Neolith honed Estatuario from CDK Stone, paired with Alfresco Emporium cafe bar stools. “We eat two meals there every day, so it doubles as a workspace and dining area,” she says. On the back wall, a white subway splashback reflects classic Hamptons style, with a separate fridge and freezer on either side concealed behind integrated joinery. A Falcon induction oven from Harvey Norman was also on her wish list. “There was no doubt in my mind I wanted a traditional-looking black oven, which would be a real feature piece,” says Mieke. Rather than hide the butler’s pantry, the galley-style prep zone flows through to the laundry. hen Mieke arrives home, she enjoys taking in all of its details – the neatly trimmed hedges flanking the driveway, the magnificent pillars and fretwork framing the entrance, and the glossy black front door she’d coveted for years. Passers-by are also captivated by the home on Queensland’s Gold Coast. “About half a dozen people have knocked on the door to ask what colour the house is painted,” shares Mieke, of the warm grey Dulux Paving Stone exterior, teamed with elegant crisp white trims, stonework and Taubmans’ All Black double doors. Inside, the selection of finishes and features are just as refined, with soaring ceilings, regal arches, sumptuous furnishings and lively pops of blue throughout. “I’ve always had an obsession with Hamptons architecture and interiors, so they’re details I’d dreamt about for years, but didn’t have the courage to pull off until this house,” she explains. Together with husband Brett and children Georgia and Diesel, Mieke had built twice before, but modern, minimalist homes had never felt like the right fit for her family. So, six years ago when they came across a large block with a great aspect and sweeping waterfront views, Mieke took a different approach and the third time has well and truly been a charm. For the three years the family lived in the existing house on their block, Mieke planned and visualised every element of her Hamptons dream home. “I had a lot of Pinterest boards on the go,” she says with a laugh. At the top of her wish list was handcrafted timber detailing, stunning wallpapers and a luxurious ensuite with a bathtub below a huge arch window, inspired by one of her favourite pins. Having sold their previous house fully furnished, Mieke embraced the opportunity to start from scratch and enlisted the help of friend and interior designer Keraney Siganto to source key pieces. The effect is inviting and richly layered, with stunning tiles and fabrics in shades of blue providing a dreamy backdrop for statement lighting and eye-catching decor. Now that they’re settled in, Mieke is free to take stock of the exquisite family abode she coaxed out of her imagination and into life. “It was a labour of love for Brett and I to build our forever home, and it really does feel like home,” she reflects. “The beauty and grandness is never lost on me, I appreciate it all.”

LOUNGE ROOM A Real Flame Heatseeker gas fireplace from Gold Coast

Fireplace & BBQ Centre, surrounded by black Nero Marquina marble by GMG Stone, forms the focal point in the stunning lounge. “In winter, we’ll turn it on in the afternoon and it heats the entire house, it’s just divine,” says Mieke, who allowed the perfect amount of wall space to display a Slim Aarons print above. Fusing shades of blue and green, a Dash & Albert rug anchors a OneWorld Collection sofa and white ‘Bobbin’ chairs, supplied by Keraney Siganto Interior Design, with custom velvet cushions being the final flourish. It was love at first sight when Mieke spotted the ‘Maison’ fabric in Delft Blue by Studio G, from Anning Curtains and Blinds, used to create the custom Roman blinds. “I’ve got Dutch family, so the little houses are a reminder of the streets over there and it ties in perfectly with blue and white ceramics around the place that were given to me by family,” she says.

Eyes are drawn upwards, where intricate coffered ceilings help to define zones and create a more intimate feel in the open layout. Mieke worked with builder Mark Bishop, of All Elite Building, to achieve the perfect scale, with the ceiling segmented into four squares above the kitchen, living, dining and fireplace areas. DINING AREA The dining area is built for family meals, as well as

entertaining: Mieke was determined to have a round dining table that encourages conversation, and searched long and hard before finding this timber eight-seater (above) from Alfresco Emporium. A One World Collection ‘Palm Leaves’ pendant and black linen upholstered French oak chairs, sourced by Keraney Siganto Interior Design, help define the dining zone within the open-plan layout. Rather than French doors, the couple opted for sliding glass doors fitted with grids from C-View Windows. “It has the Hamptons look we were after and works perfectly alongside sliding flyscreens,” says Mieke, of the doors leading to the outdoor area. To style her bar cart from Alfresco Emporium (top left), Mieke used pieces that she already had, including an ice bucket that was a gift for Brett’s 50th birthday, as well as blue and white ceramics from her Dutch family. CONSOLE Rather than set a deadline to furnish the house, Mieke instead

spent several years gradually sourcing the perfect pieces to add character and interest in each space. A treasured find is a ‘Jacques’ 7 door Wisteria Design timber sideboard (left) which, teamed with Boyd Blue prints and a palm lamp from Beacon Lighting, adds a tropical plantation feel. >

OFFICE Striking ‘Corneila’ Thibaut wallpaper in Navy was the starting

point for the office interior (top left), with the lively print the perfect foil for a South Hampton library and sideboard storage units from Rococo Design. Mieke does all the family admin at the black Long Island desk, also from Rococo Design, while family pooch Max is often found lazing about on the Dash & Albert rug. MAIN BEDROOM Navy blue and olive green are a regal combination

in the couple’s bedroom on the upper level (above). The bed, featuring a velvet headboard, was custom-made through Domayne, with the royal blue tones echoed in an Adairs throw and custom cushions. As in all the bedrooms, wallpaper forms a decorative backdrop, with a ‘Camber’ Thibaut design chosen as the focal point above a dado rail. “I’ve always loved blue and it works so perfectly with the Hamptons style,” reflects Mieke about her home’s signature colour. For a cohesive feel, floral Westbury ‘Longwood’ fabric from Canvas + Sasson used on the cushions and bedside lamps continues through to the ensuite in the feature blinds. DIESEL’S ROOM Shades of grey are a timeless choice in soon-to-beteenager Diesel’s bedroom (left), which features subtle ‘Dawson Stripe’ Thibaut wallpaper and a custom bedhead from Domayne. Textural grey bedding is punctuated with a coordinated lampshade and cushion in 3 Beaches fabric. The super-cute giraffe was a holiday find from Mexico.

below an arch window and knew it was what I wanted to create in the ensuite, and it worked out perfectly, enthuses Mieke. Bathed in beautiful natural light, the Reece Roca undermount bath, surrounded by Carrara marble sourced from GMG Stone, complements the soft grey and white Carrara hexagonal floor tiles from Tile & Stone Gallery. Soft furnishings, including a duck egg blue ottoman by Custom Cushions by Kylie, and automated blinds, also enhance the sense of luxury. HELLO HOUSE TO HOME BEAUTIFUL HAMPTONS!

MEET THE HOMEOWNERS FROM OUR LATEST HOUSE TO HOME BEAUTIFUL SERIES

In our latest House to Home Beautiful series, Home Beautiful teamed up with Sydney homeowners Robyn and Jonathon as they realised a long-held dream to create a forever home for their family, which includes Jasper, 12, Matilda, 10, and Amelie, three (all pictured, left). Rather than renovate their modest bungalow, the couple enlisted building design company Hall & Hart to create a custom home with a stunning Hamptons aesthetic. And the HB team was with them all the way! Next month, we reveal the stunning results with expert tips to inspire your own build, and simple ways to create a modern, Hamptons-style haven.

he undisputed beauty of building your own home from scratch is that you can truly make it your own. Whether you’ve longed for a spacious outdoor entertaining space, a statement bathroom or indulgent parents’ retreat, tackling a new build is the ideal opportunity to reflect how you want your home to look and, of course, your own style. There are myriad ways you can make this happen: you could work with an architect, get plans drawn up by a building designer or streamline the process by selecting a pre-designed home to be customised through a building company. We’ve spoken to the experts to help you navigate your new build from start to finish, whichever path you choose. “Just keep in mind that every build is unique and it’s often a long-term project over several years, so it’s okay to take your time,” advises Kristin Brookfield from the Housing Industry Association (HIA). >

SET YOUR VISION AND BUDGET The best way to begin your build journey is with a vision of what you want to create. Will your home be all sleek lines like the one pictured above (with interiors by EB Interiors) or something more traditional? To get ideas flowing Natalee Bowen, of Indah Island, recommends gathering inspiration from magazines, Instagram and Pinterest to form a mood board. “This will collate the styles you’re drawn to, and from there you can start prioritising your needs and wants,” she says. Set a realistic budget from the outset: Natalee recommends allowing a contingency of 10-20 per cent. Instead of a home loan you’ll need a construction one. “One of the main differences with a construction loan is that you will need to have the building contract prepared to get full approval,” explains Kristin from the HIA. “The loan will be arranged in a way that allows the borrower to make progress payments when the bank has proof that each stage of work has been completed.”

BLOCK SELECTION AND ASSESSMENT The block you select will affect the house you put on it. Things such as location, aspect, shape of the block, whether it’s flat or sloping, council restrictions and even soil type will influence the design and cost, so ensure you get site-specific surveys and tests, advises Nick Rawson, director of building company Hall & Hart. “When working with a client we’ll do a contour survey, conduct a borehole report, which informs requirements for the slab, contact Dial Before You Dig and get a council certificate outlining any relevant restrictions,” he says.

“UNDERSTAND THE ORIENTATION AND ON YOUR BLOCK... HAVE THE SLEEPING AND QUIETER AREAS ON THE SOUTHERN SIDE”

DESIGN PHASE & DOCUMENTATION It’s important not to rush the design and interior specifications as there are many considerations. If this is going to be your forever home, you’ll also need to future-proof it. Interior designer Natalee suggests asking yourself lifestyle questions such as: How do you and your family like to live? Which spaces do you spend most time in? Do you have existing furniture you want to incorporate? Do you want a single- or double-level home? “Things like bathroom locations and whether you want security systems and smart wiring should be sorted out early,” she says. If opting for a pre-designed home, find out what’s standard and non-standard in terms of the flooring options, fixtures, paint type and appliances, what’s included in the price and whether you can make upgrades or alterations. Also consider the small but significant details. Are you happy with standard 2400mm ceiling height and doors, or is it worthwhile extending to 2700mm to enhance the space? >

expert tip

“It’s beneficial to engage a professional builder or architect for advice early in the process to help avoid costly mistakes,” says Nick Rawson, of Hall & Hart.

PICK YOUR DESIGN & BUILD METHOD There are several approaches to designing and building your home, and the way you go about it is often influenced by personal preference and budget. For a fully bespoke home, engage a building designer or architect for the layout and exterior design and tender the build. “This allows for considerable design scope, yet it’s often the most expensive option and may not allow for a fixed-price building contract, which can result in cost overruns,” explains Hall & Hart’s Nick. A more cost-effective option is to choose a pre-designed home and floor plan with a builder, but the degree of customisation varies, which may mean compromising your wish list. Alternatively, a hybrid approach offered by companies such as Hart & Hall involves working with a build and design company to customise one of their architecturally pre-designed homes at a fixed priced contract.

HOUSE TO

expert tip

“Asking the builder what their process and timeline is early is important to avoid confusion and potential hiccups,” says the HIA’s Kristin Brookfield.

DEMOLITION WORK

PHOTOGRAPHY (THIS PAGE FROM TOP) RYAN LINNEGAR/MARCH TWICE INTERIORS, CLAIRE MCFERRAN/JANE FYFE/4ROOMS (OPPOSITE) PRUE RUSCOE/EB INTERIORS

If there’s an existing house on the block and you’re planning to knock down and rebuild, you’ll need council approval to demolish it and any significant trees. Once approved, it’s a matter of contacting various demolition companies to quote the job. Factors that affect the cost include access constraints, the slope of the block and whether there are hazardous materials such as asbestos that require safe handling and disposal. Wait until just prior to construction before demolishing the home, so if there are any delays, you may be able to capitalise on renting the house or living there until you’re ready to start.

ENGAGING A BUILDER It is essential to choose a builder you can establish a good working relationship with. You might opt to design and build with the one company that project manages the entire process. Alternatively, your architect or draftsperson may recommend an experienced new-home specialist. “It’s a good idea to put your project out to tender and meet with several builders, however don’t make your decision on price alone,” advises Denita Wawn, CEO of Master Builders Australia. “Discuss your expectations, the builder’s level of involvement, their availability to start the project and make sure all the inclusions are in the contract before you sign it.” >

HOUSE TO

APPROVAL PROCESS Your house plans will need council approval, with the process and documentation required varying among the states and territories. Most new houses will be subject to both planning (development) approval and building approval. In Queensland, NSW, ACT, the Northern Territory and Victoria, the building approval can be done by an independent building certifier. In Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia, the building approval is still carried out by the local council in conjunction with an independent certifier. As it can be a complex process, Kristin recommends working with your design professional or builder to prepare and lodge the applications.

“THE APPROVAL PROCESS IS KEY. NO CAN START UNTIL THIS IS C OMPLETE”

work

~ KRISTIN BROOKFIELD, HOUSING INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION

CONSTRUCTION Breaking ground is a milestone worth celebrating. Once the construction starts, weekly site meetings with your builder are a must-do. Ask as many questions as you need to and, if you’re sourcing key fixtures and fittings, ensure they’re ordered well in advance and on site ahead of the build schedule to avoid delays. It’s possible to make alterations during the build, but the sooner you speak to your builder, the better. “They can advise you how much a variation is likely to cost and might suggest alternative solutions,” explains Natalee. “Then it’s up to you to weigh up the long-term benefit of the change versus the cost.” Nick from Hall & Hart adds: “In most instances, the further you are in a new-build process, the harder and more complicated it is to make a change.”

FINAL INSPECTION

PHOTOGRAPHY (THIS PAGE) ELEMENT REAL ESTATE PHOTOGRAPHY/HALL & HART (OPPOSITE FROM TOP) LOUISE ROCHE/DIVINE RENOVATIONS/ARCHITECT ALEXANDRA BUCHANAN, RYAN LINNEGAR/MARCH TWICE INTERIORS

With the finish line in sight, you’ll be eager to move in, but it’s important to take your time during the build’s later stages. Prior to handover and making the final payment, organise a thorough walk-through of the property, advises Denita from Master Builders Australia. “Make note of any imperfections or faults the builder needs to address and ensure that you’ve received everything outlined in the contract documentation,” she says. A building certifier will sign off the home against regulatory requirements and your builder should also supply a warranty for their work. “The time frames vary, but generally you can expect a six-year warranty for structural elements and two years for non-structural,” says Denita. And then, at long last, it’s finally time for you to book the removalist!

SOLID GROUND FROM HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST HARD FLOORING FOR YOUR SPACES TO INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE, WE’VE GOT ALL YOUR QUESTIONS COVERED

T

here’s nothing quite like the warm colours of timber to bring a home to life. Whether you select solid boards, engineered flooring, vinyl or laminate, you can find the perfect look and price point you’re after. One of the benefits of these surfaces is that they’re very hard-wearing and easy to clean. “Almost all of the timber floors are pretty forgiving,” explains Anne Plumb, director of Royal Oak Floors. And if your budget doesn’t quite stretch to timber, there are excellent vinyls and laminates available for a stylish switch-in.

ENGINEERED FLOORING AND SOLID TIMBER Before selecting your hard flooring, it’s important to understand the differences between the types. “Engineered flooring is made with a plywood core constructed from hardwoods that are glued together in opposite directions,” says Anne from Royal Oak Floors. “The cross lamination of the core gives engineered floorboards greater stability from humidity changes, which allows greater widths compared to solid timber.” However, Anne says if you want a very even look, solid timber may be the better choice. “We brush out the grain of our floorboards so it doesn’t look as flat,” she says. One of the other benefits of solid timber is that it can be sanded, stained and finished on site.

VINYL AND LAMINATE Vinyl flooring has come a long way since the ’60s. “There are so many more patterns that mimic wood and stone,” explains Andrew Ferguson, national technical manager at Polyflor. “Plus, it usually has a clear wear layer on top so that the pattern remains fresh and protected. Vinyl is also a very safe product from an environmental perspective.” For those on a budget, laminate is a good choice. “It has a strong surface layer, it’s easy to install, it’s durable and long-wearing,” says Shaeden Watson, CEO of Carpet Right, a Sydney flooring business. However, it has limitations. “Laminate is not suitable in moist areas,” says Shaeden. “It’s also subject to extreme temperature change, so it’s not recommended for holiday homes that get closed up.”

CLEANING TIPS “For hybrids, laminates and vinyl planks, you only need a damp mop – detergent is needed every once in a while to give the floor a good clean,” says Shaeden from Carpet Right. “It’s important the mop is not too wet. For timber and engineered flooring, a daily sweep and a damp mop every now and then is best. Timber has to be treated more often with varnishes, waxes or sealants. Engineered flooring is sealed when it’s installed, so you shouldn’t have to maintain that for a long time.”

PATTERN TRENDS

PHOTOGRAPHY (THIS PAGE, CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT) LOUISE ROCHE, TIMEDIACONTENT.COM, DEREK SWALWELL (OPPOSITE) FELIX FOREST

When choosing flooring patterns, the classics are in, as can be seen in this home by interior designer Fiona Austin, of Austin Design Associates, where ‘Smoked’ flooring from Royal Oak Floors is laid in a herringbone pattern. “Chevron and herringbone are getting stronger,” says Anne from Royal Oak Floors.

Painting timber flooring is trending and, according to Sivan Carmody, brand manager of Feast Watson, dove grey is one of the top colour picks. In this home by interior design and architecture practice Richards Stanisich, the floor is painted Dulux ‘Milton Moon’, which blends in seamlessly with the darker rug. “Our ‘White Smoke’ is the most popular,” says Anne from Royal Oak Floors, of her brand’s top colour choice. “It’s a very light, soft oak timber tone.”

INSTALLATION KNOW-HOW Depending on the flooring you select, the process for installation will vary, but there a few key things to consider. “If you’re in an apartment, check the body corporate allows you to have floorboards,” says Anne from Royal Oak Floors. “A fixed floor is much quieter than a floating floor but that does come at a cost. You also need to ask your installer if the substrate is suitable to have a floor put over the top of it.” If you’ve chosen to install vinyl, Andrew from Polyflor stresses that it is not a DIY product. “To get a good-looking vinyl floor, you need good floor preparation underneath,” he says. “Sometimes the substrate needs a moisture test. All this needs to be done by a tradesperson.”

“For someone with a family, hybrid vinyl is the best product on the market because its scratch-resistant,” explains Shaeden from Carpet Right. “You also won’t hear that clickety-clack sound that a laminate makes when kids run around the house. However, timber and engineered flooring would be on par.” If you choose solid timber, pick the finish wisely, says Sivan from Feast Watson. “The only product we would suggest not using if you have kids or pets is tung oil, as it’s super-penetrating so it won’t stop the scratches on the top,” explains Sivan.

BATHROOM SELECTIONS One place vinyl flooring comes into its own is in the bathroom, since it is water resistant. You can also buy products that are non-slip, which makes it very safe. “We have sustainable slip-rated safety products where the safety rating is guaranteed for the life of the product,” says Andrew from Polyflor. “We embed particles through the wear layer so that some of them are buried, waiting for the vinyl to be worn. The way I like to describe it is to compare a hundreds and thousands biscuit with a choc chip biscuit. The first biscuit has hundreds and thousands on the surface; the second one has choc chips embedded all the way through, like our product has particles throughout.”

GOOD FOR PAWS AND PLAY

“A LOT OF OUR colours ARE CREATED BY CHEMICAL REACTIONS” ~ ANNE PLUMB, ROYAL OAK FLOORS

CARING FOR TIMBER If you’re refreshing old boards, you need to know what’s on the timber. “If you have an oil coating and want to coat it with a water base, you need to sand it back to bare and coat it again,” says Sivan from Feast Watson. “The same is true for the other way around.” And, while timber is very forgiving, citrus or anything acidic, such as wine, sometimes can reduce the shine of the coating. “One coat of floor polish should fix it,” says Sivan.

he laundry was once a closed-away room, hidden out of sight from the rest of the home. But as our more functional spaces get sexier and less utilitarian, they are now stepping into the design spotlight. And why shouldn’t they? We spend so much time in the laundry, so why shouldn’t it be just as spectacular as the rest of our homes? We reveal the design secrets behind four delightful laundries to help get you on the path towards your dream laundry.

BLUE CRUSH GIA renovation expert Kia Howat was tasked to refresh this dated laundry, improve its functionality and increase its storage, which she did with creative flair. “The shaker doors and butler sink add traditional charm,” explains Kia. “The white joinery has white leather handles, and the blue tiles from Signorino Tile Gallery are a beautiful handmade gloss square, which add the pop of colour we needed.” The blue is carried through with the floor runner, hand towel and low-key blue Laminex joinery framing the cupboards.

POCKET ROCKET This laundry nook opens to a playroom, bathroom and small home gym, so it had to be both beautiful and practical. Toronto-based Collective Studio kept the scheme as neutral as possible, but opted for a patterned Saltillo cement tile for the splashback to inject colour and interest. “We also used a beautiful hanging bar from Kroft Studio so it would look more like art when not in use,” says interior designer Alana Firestone. THE RIGHT ATTITUDE This understated laundry by Melbourne interior designer Aldona Pajdak (below) may be all-white, however it’s packed with personality. Rather than the standard under-bench cabinetry, this room features three oversized pull-out drawers embossed with specific washing labels (no whites getting mixed up with red shirts here), all with giant timber knobs that feel fun yet chic. A hang rail runs the length of the bench to make the most of a usually unused area.

and robust materials, this workspace by Jessica Helgerson Interior Design is a dream. The bench sitting over the washer and dryer is higher than the opposite workspace, but this is balanced by lining up both of the splashbacks. The hamper doors have cut-outs that are playful and practical, giving extra ventilation within the cabinetry, and the cement hexagonal floor tiles are softened by the plush rug (try Tigmi Trading for similar). “In a smaller space these elements may make it feel cluttered, but the extra counter and floor space created enough breathing room to include decorative objects,” explains Jessica.

Whoever said a formal garden can’t feature rambling garden beds (opposite), bursting with foliage in every shade of deep green to silvery grey imaginable, hasn’t been to visit Rebecca and Andrew’s picturesque plot in Melbourne’s Bayside. A path of oversized Eco Outdoor limestone pavers in Andorra (left) connects the house with an outdoor room at the end of the garden, running in parallel with English buxus hedging along the pool fence. “We had almost worn a dirt track through the grass from going back and forth,” says Rebecca. >

Save for a magnolia on one end and a solitary palm up the other, the original yard gave landscape designer Andrew Panton of Andrew Panton Design a blank canvas. “We told Andrew to treat it as his own,” says homeowner Rebecca, who was knee-deep in renovating their Federation-style abode at the time. With the homeowners’ two children having already flown the nest, designer Andrew knew the lawn didn’t need to be purely practical. “I wanted to bring the garden out into the yard, rather than limit it to the perimeter,” he says. Rectangular beds that cut a sharp impression into the lawn are accentuated by edging in Corten steel and mirror the straight lines of the boundary hedge and pool. Contrasting formal and informal plantings at varying heights softens the angles, and a layer of gardenia around the boundary creates depth. In the beds, a loosely tiered design starts with masses of oakleaf hydrangea falling to Japanese windflower and English lavender. “There’s not a lot of flowers in the garden, but there’s so much colour thanks to the foliage,” says Rebecca. A refined palette of purple and white florals pops against the myriad shades of green, while silvery foliage complements bluestone paving around the pool to create a stunning result. “Wherever you are in the house, from the minute you walk in the front doro, you glimpse the garden,” says Rebecca.

pure beauty

They may be high-maintenance plants, but the gardenias’ sublime white blooms make them worth the effort. “They do like quite a bit of sunlight, and they love a lot of water,” advises Andrew. “They’re also hungry plants – they like the soil slightly acidic, so they have to be fed regularly.” They thrive along the boundary of the garden.

“THE GARDEN HAS CREATED THE MOST BEAUTIFUL VIEW FOR US FROM ALL ANGLES OF THE HOUSE” ~ REBECCA

tropical touch

An impressive palm stands between the pool house (above), covered in creeping fig, and the outdoor room, which awaits behind a wisteria-covered arbour (above left). “I love the wisteria, it looks lovely when it’s in flower,” says Rebecca. Beside the arbour, Andrew created a tiny tropical oasis out of a shady spot, filled with palms and ferns. “You wouldn’t often have that tropical touch in a semi-formal garden, but it’s a little escape down the back,” he says. On the pool side of the property, a row of Little Gem magnolias adds interest near the water feature. “Evergreen magnolias are a practical choice around a pool as they don’t shed many leaves,” explains the landscape designer.

orderly fashion

Pleached Ficus Hillii ‘Flash’ trees make a grand statement in the front garden (left), with their bare trunks allowing the Japanese jasmine planted beneath to shine. “If the wall behind them is in good condition, it is nice to pleach trees this way,” says Andrew. “It encourages the trees to grow upwards as well.” That said, he wasn’t tempted to include them in the backyard. “Pleaching is a very formal look,” he says. “Andrew and Rebecca are such relaxed people, I didn’t think they’d want a super-formal back garden.”

SCRAMBLED EGG BRIOCHE By PROUD MARY CAFE Serves 4 Egg Mix 8 eggs 100g cream Salt and pepper, to taste

Crisps 500ml canola oil 2 large Russet potatoes Salt, to taste

Mushroom Duxelles 1 brown onion, peeled and diced 4 garlic cloves, crushed 5 sprigs thyme, stems removed 6 button mushrooms, roughly chopped 6 portobello mushrooms, roughly chopped

Aussie Onion Jam 50g Vegemite 100g canola oil 3 brown onions, peeled and sliced To Serve 4 slices brioche Knob of butter Parmigiano Reggiano

1. To make the egg mix, whisk eggs and cream in a bowl. Set aside. Season to taste. 2. To make mushroom duxelles, heat a large saucepan over medium heat and sauté onion, garlic and thyme. Once there is a slight colour on onions, add mushrooms. Cook and season. Roughly blend with a stick blender. 3. To make crisps, heat oil to 150°C (use a tall pot as oil will rise and bubble once potato is placed in it). Wash potatoes, then thinly shave them into 1mm strips (or as thin as possible). Drop shavings into oil, one at a time, in 4 batches. Fry until golden brown. Remove from oil and place on paper towels to absorb oil. Season with salt. 4. To make Aussie onion jam, whisk Vegemite and oil together. Dress onions with Vegemite oil. Heat a saucepan over low-medium heat and slowly sauté onions until you have a jam-like consistency. 5. To serve, toast brioche. Heat frying pan over medium heat and add butter. Add egg mix and Aussie onion jam, constantly folding outside in and stirring. Don’t let it catch or set like an omelette. Spread mushroom duxelles on toast. Place scrambled egg on top and cover with crisps. Finely grate Parmigiano Reggiano on top.

t can be hard to visualise the details when you’re buying your forever home off the plan. For Melbourne couple Rebecca and Daniel, the solution was to enlist sisters Lauren and Amanda Martin, of architecture and interior design practice Studio Martin, to devise a bespoke fit-out tailored to match the needs of their growing family, and to reflect their passion for natural materials. As keen cooks who enjoy entertaining, a priority for the couple was to create a practical zone with plenty of bench space, teamed with custom cabinetry to hide all the clutter. “Although the floor plan was mainly set, when we came on board prior to the build, we had the opportunity to replan the kitchen layout to accommodate a hidden bar off the dining area and a butler’s pantry leading to a separate laundry,” says designer Lauren. “Having these busy work zones alongside each other is really practical, particularly for a young, busy family, as you can multitask while preparing dinner.” As well as being functional, the space had to be beautiful and evoke a sense of calm. To achieve a warm, organic feel, the paredback palette was centred around celebrating timber, with expanses of custom spotted gum timber veneer joinery by LWW Interiors, offset by light oak engineered floorboards from Made by Storey. The hero piece is undoubtedly the bespoke island bench. “Rather than a frantic hub, we really wanted the kitchen to feel calm, with lovely natural light, warmth from the timber, and access straight out to the garden,” reflects Rebecca. “It’s relaxing to just sit there with a coffee or a glass of wine. It’s the soul of our home.”

HARD-WEAR FINISHES

As the space combines an openplan living, kitchen and dining area, the design concept was to create moments of surprise and conceal work zones. “We created a division between the main kitchen and galley-style butler’s pantry by designing a full-height appliance wall (below),” explains designer Amanda. “This zone then flows through to a separate laundry, which can be screened off with a timber pocket door.”

While homeowners Rebecca and Daniel loved natural materials, they wanted to steer away from a porous natural stone benchtop in favour of a more robust material. A terrific option was a Laminam porcelain slab from Signorino, also used on the splashback (right). “It ticked all the boxes,” says Rebecca. “It’s stain-, scratch- and heatresistant, which means we can take a pot straight off the cooktop and put it onto the bench.”

HIDDEN EXTRAS

One of Rebecca and Daniel’s favourite features within the reworked space is the hidden bar, which works a treat when entertaining. Adjoining the kitchen, the bar area is kept under wraps behind a sliding solid spotted gum door, which opens to reveal a timber-lined service station. The bronze mirror splashback stretching to the ceiling bounces light around the zone and reflects the home’s leafy outlook.

ISLAND STYLE

The island bench topped in easycare Eternal Marquina quartz from Silestone was carefully planned to serve myriad functions. “As the kitchen is relatively compact, a sink needed to be located on the island, while also allowing room for food prep and use as a breakfast bar, says interior designer Olivia. The solution was to wrap the sitting area around one end and keep the bench to a slender 700mm. part from a lick of paint, Jenna and Chris’s weatherboard 1950s home in the north-east of Melbourne had remained unchanged for more than six decades. Yet, when the young couple snapped up the property four years ago, they had big plans. While they loved the home’s character, the layout didn’t work, so interior designer Olivia Cirocco, of GIA Bathrooms and Kitchens, was tasked with redesigning the floor plan and fit-out. Stage one involved removing walls, replacing doors and windows, and also levelling the wonky old floor to create a seamless open-plan kitchen, dining and living area. When it came to the colour selection, the couple had a single hue in mind – black. “We wanted our kitchen to be a big statement, so everything needed to be black, including the appliances,” explains Jenna. The challenge for Olivia was combining the perfect palette to create a look that wasn’t overtly industrial or modern, but more traditional, in keeping with the style of the home. “Details such as the shaker cabinetry, textural handles, black-paned windows and decorative pendants were used to inject character and make it feel welcoming, rather than imposing,” says Olivia. Gloss was also dialled down, with the Dulux Black cabinetry finished in 30 per cent satin 2-Pac to help combat the appearance of pesky fingerprints. The overall impact of the colour scheme is a sophisticated space that doesn’t appear too ‘kitcheny’. “The beauty of black on black and integrated appliances is it creates a seamless backdrop that recedes within the combined dining and living area,” explains Olivia. While Jenna expected mixed reactions to the bold scheme from friends and family, it received a big thumbs up. “I think it’s shown people a dark kitchen can still be bright and inviting, and we love it,” she says.

LIGHT RELIEF

Kitchen elements, including the Franke sink, Lucia mixer and double Fisher & Paykel wall ovens, are camouflaged in black, while larger appliances such as the fridge, dishwasher and rangehood (above) are seamlessly integrated behind joinery. “As they sit side by side, the pantry was designed to replicate the fridge joinery, and that level of detailing helps give it a furniture feel,” says Olivia.

To avoid the kitchen feeling too dark, the homeowners went for limewashed recycled Baltic Pine flooring (above), painted the walls in Dulux Lexicon Half (opposite) and opted for Aria Snow Gloss handmade subway tiles from National Tiles (right) to help splash natural light around the space. “A large window was also installed to maximise the amount of light streaming through,” says Olivia.

WOW FACTOR

Using a single colour en masse, particularly a bold black, will always create a statement. The key to head-turning appeal is to add a little contrast. Here, the limewashed floor and white walls in Dulux Lexicon Half help frame and define the kitchen zone. The level of gloss is also important: rather than shiny and showy, the subtle sheen of semi-satin cabinets will never go out of style.

merican TV personality and fashion designer Whitney Port’s personal style is authentic, eclectic and a little bohemian, so when Houston-based interior designer Marie Flanigan was engaged to renovate her and husband Tim’s 1950s range-style Californian home, the new look was inspired by Whitney’s unique aesthetic. “They wanted to give the existing traditional white kitchen more personality and warmth and make it family-friendly, with a flowing layout and ample counterspace,” says Marie. Original terracotta floors were the jumping-off point for the new organic palette, which includes a mix of genres, finishes and styles. Richly veined grey and blue Quartzite with peach undertones was chosen as the star of the kitchen, flowing across the benchtops and splashbacks, interwoven with antique brass accents that reflect the fashion influencer’s love of Mid-Century Modern. “Metallic details like the custom island legs, hardware and pendant light fixtures were an opportunity to bring a touch of glamour and polish,” says Marie. Whitney also wanted to imbue a country living vibe with a big farmhouse sink and open shelving for displays. Crediting Marie for marrying her eclectic influences into a cohesive design, she says the once plain space has been beautifully transformed. “Our kitchen is definitely now the heart of our home,” enthuses Whitney.

METALLIC ACCENTS

Bold antique brass details in the kitchen (here & opposite) serve as a unifying feature. “They lend a sense of luxury to the otherwise laid-back and earthy space and really make the custom elements pop,” says designer Marie. Among a sea of bespoke cabinetry in light oak, the white rangehood with its brass strapping was incorporated in the design to create a focal point and echo the elegant island legs. WITH A VERDANT BACKDROP AND CHARMING VINTAGE-INSPIRED FLOURISHES, THIS KITCHEN IS AS PRETTY AS A PICTURE Styling KYLIE JACKES Photography AARON LEITZ

s one of the busiest and most-loved spots in the home, the kitchen deserves a prime location, and this one couldn’t be more idyllic. Bathed in sunshine with direct access to the garden and a sprawling outdoor entertaining area, this space, in a beautiful home in Portland, Oregon, in the US, is exactly what the owners were after – light, warm and friendly. The stunning space is the brainchild of interior designer Jessica Helgerson, who was tasked with the top-to-bottom remodel of the family’s 1920s home. “Our work involved relocating the kitchen to the sunnier side of the house and creating a character that suited the home’s vintage and the sweet young family of four who use it daily,” says Jessica. Affectionately known as the ‘garden kitchen’, vast windows and doors create a wonderful connection to the leafy surrounds, with planter boxes filled with seasonal vegies and herbs inspiring home-cooked meals. The green backdrop also complements the kitchen’s soothing tone. “Although the finishes like the wall tiles, white cabinetry and quartz benchtops are mostly muted, it works because of the variety of subtle undertones and the warmth of the western walnut island bench and shelving,” she explains. Doubling as an informal dining zone, the bespoke central table features deep drawers and shelves for easy-access storage, and is a favourite spot to enjoy the view and a bite to eat. Polished brassed accents add another layer of elegance, with the crowning centrepiece a vintage 1970s Florian Schulz ‘Double Posa’ pendant. “Every element of the room was thoughtfully considered and the effect is a truly special space that will be enjoyed for years to come,” says Jessica. “It’s classic, liveable and warm.”

WOW FACTOR

From hexagonal floor tiles and a Lacanche oven with brushed brass knobs to the one-of-a-kind Andy Paiko glass pendant that’s above the sink, every detail in this space evokes the wow. “There isn’t a surface or piece that wasn’t lovingly crafted from the design process to the install,” says Jessica. “All the elements work in tandem, balancing each other to create a palette filled with warmth and layers of visual interest.” For a Lacanche oven made to order in France, visit Manorhouse, manor.com.au. >

ISLAND STYLE

“Because of the amount of windows above the benchtops, there was very little space to incorporate a special splashback without it being constantly interrupted,” says Jessica. “The solution was to run the tiles to the ceiling and use them across all the kitchen walls.” Adding a lovely tactile feel, the subway tiles in mixed custom glazes (above) were installed in a random pattern, creating subtle variation and sheen that reflect natural light.

Devised by Alisha Borden, senior interior designer at Jessica Helgerson Interior Design, the bespoke walnut island with brass legs (above) combines form and function. “We designed the island so it’s visually light, allows seating on both sides and is practical, with electrical outlets on the sides and integrated storage drawers and shelves,” says Alisha. ART DECO DELIGHT A LIGHT, BRIGHT ENSUITE, LAVISHED IN MARBLE, WAS A BEFITTING ADDITION TO A HERITAGE HOME IN NSW Words KYLIE JACKES Photography MAREE HOMER

WARDROBE GOALS

Walk-in wardrobe joinery and walls in Dulux Antarctica Lake frame the bathing zone, awash in Carrara marble. For interior designer Stewart Horton, the colour variation was important to set the tone for the ensuite. “The interior palette inspired by the home’s beachside location is various shades of moody teal, green and blue, but the ensuite by contrast is fresh and bright, and has a beautiful softness,” explains Stewart.

W

hen Justin and Janet bought their 1920s Art Deco home almost 10 years ago, their plan was always to reinstate its grandeur. The couple and their three children lived in the beachside home in Newcastle, NSW, for four years before embarking on a whole-home renovation, engaging interior designer Stewart Horton, of Horton & Co. A major addition was a new upper-level parents’ retreat that encompassed a beautifully appointed ensuite. “The existing bathroom hadn’t aged well,” says Justin. “It was a 1970s reno job, so there were a lot of brown tiles, tired laminate and Roman-style fixtures ... we were looking forward to having a light-filled ensuite with marble throughout.” With plenty of space to play with, the layout could effortlessly accommodate a beautiful bath, double showers and vanity, plenty of storage and vast expanses of Carrara marble. “By using marble floor-to-ceiling, it feels incredibly luxurious,” says Stewart. “The subtle layering of details like the elegant cornicing and the bevelling on fixtures are a nod to the home’s Art Deco heritage.” Although the whole-home renovation took almost two years, Justin reflects it was worth the wait to get the home of their dreams and a truly decadent parents’ retreat. “We didn’t hold back on any of the elements and the ensuite just shines with the quality of the fittings,” he says. “When we’re in there, it really does feel five star.”

FEATURE TUB

Homeowner Janet’s favourite feature in the ensuite is a deep freestanding Victoria + Albert tub that’s bathed in natural light throughout the day. The bath’s bevelled profile, paired with Perrin & Rowe tapware, all from The English Tapware Company, adds ornate detail to the space, while Stewart chose the vintage lucite side table as a sculptural point of difference in keeping with the subtle Art Deco theme. >

WOW FACTOR

With its stunning colour variation and veining, natural marble is synonymous with luxury. Here, its timeless beauty is appreciated to full effect. “Using marble floorto-the-ceiling creates wow factor, however the trick to a monotone palette is to use different shapes, scale, finishes and textures to add interest and depth,” explains Stewart. “Here, we did that with large Carrara wall tiles (opposite), contrasted by the smaller intricate herringbone mosaics on the floor, which all came from Earp Bros.” VANITY FLAIR

The elegant bespoke vanity (left & opposite) by Burns Custom Kitchens, teamed with a custom mirrored cabinet, provides for abundant storage. A wall sconce from Visual Comfort inset into the mirror reflects the brushed nickel theme of the Perrin & Rowe tapware and hardware throughout. Rather than natural marble for the vanity, Stewart opted for the less sensitive Smartstone Athena. “It’s such a good match to the marble and it’s so easy to clean make-up and lotion spills,” he says.

NOW & ZEN BEYOND ITS BEAUTY, THIS TRANQUIL ENSUITE IMBUES SERENITY AND JOY Words KYLIE JACKES Photography CLAIRE MCFERRAN

P

erth homeowners Flora and Aaron are adept multitaskers: just months after the welcome arrival of their son Anderson, the couple decided to embark on an ambitious renovation of their 1930s home, with Aaron at the helm as owner-builder. The plan was to transform the home and add a modern extension at the back – a minimalist retreat featuring simple finishes and soaring raked ceilings. Keen for the main bedroom and ensuite to be a secluded haven, the couple enlisted interior designer Kelly Donougher, of 13 Interiors, to work her magic. “Everything you see is Kelly’s vision,” says Flora. “She was just amazing putting it all together. The only thing I knew I definitely wanted was a timber vanity and an interesting feature wall; the rest was an open brief.” Inspiration for the soothing colour palette came from the natural surrounds and desire to create a space that “wasn’t stock standard,” says Kelly. “The moment I found the green marble tiles, I knew they were perfect for the soaring four-metre shower wall, which is flooded in natural light from the skylight above.” Teamed with floor-to-ceiling concrete-look tiles, custom American oak joinery and concrete basins, the space evokes the simple yet dreamy day spa serenity Flora craved. “As an engineer, I work in quite a highstress environment, and after a crazy day I really look forward to unwinding in there,” she enthuses. “When I walk in, it’s instant Zen and I can feel my stress melting away. I still message Kelly from time to time to tell her how much we love it.”

WET ZONE

“The shower (right) really functions as a wet area, as it’s quite large – the splash zone is simply contained by a fixed piece of glass,” says Kelly. “There’s a single piece of glass to clean and it’s unobtrusive.” A simple niche makes a ledge for products, while the bench seat has many benefits. “It’s great for shaving legs, washing our two-year-old, Anderson, with the handheld shower and it is quite indulgent to just sit under the rainhead shower,” says Flora.

CIRCLE WORK

Working with the narrow rectangular floor plan, Kelly introduced various shapes to add visual interest (opposite, bottom). “Curves always soften a room, so we introduced the round basins from Perth-based company Nood Co, teamed with Alder Tapware and oval mirrors from Granite Lane,” she says. The American Oak vanity (below & opposite) was custom designed and made by local company Rough Furniture.

WOW FACTOR

The star of the space is the soaring four-metre-high backdrop of Ming Green ‘Picket’ tiles from National Tiles (right & opposite top). “The mosaic marble tiles really draw you in and the surrounding cement-look tiles on the walls and floor from Tile Boutique really help make the green pop,” explains designer Kelly.

TERRAZZO BLUSH IT MAY BE NEUTRAL, BUT THERE’S NOTHING BLAND ABOUT THIS BATHROOM BRIMMING WITH PLAYFUL FEATURES Words KYLIE JACKES Photography MARTINA GEMMOLA

WOW FACTOR

Bespeckled terrazzo-look Case D’Arte ivory tiles create instant impact, however the key to their execution was a careful balancing act. “Tile selection was all about pairing complementary tones and styles, which added interest without overshadowing one another,” says designer Kia, who picked the palette from Southern Tile in Moorabbin. A range of subway tiles in shades from white to light grey was used above the terrazzo, while matt white tiles elsewhere allow the eye to rest.

Central to the room is the custom floating vanity by Antic Cabinet Makers, topped with white Neolith porcelain. Doors and open shelves in a custom 2-Pac colour are paired perfectly with a Slabshapers Boat Basin in McTavish, while tapware from Reece in Brushed Nickel picks up the subtle glimmering flecks from the feature tiles.

I

t was love at first sight when interior designer Kia Howat from GIA Bathrooms and Kitchens presented a terrazzo-look tile to Melbourne homeowners Anna and Mark. Although the couple wanted calm, light tones for their new-look ensuite, they were happy to push the boundaries of a typical neutral palette. “Anna and Mark came to me in need of a complete ensuite overhaul,” says Kia, of the swift five-week transformation that had an expansion of the small shower space at the top of their wish list. “They wanted to update tired finishes and rework the layout to improve functionality.” With an existing concrete floor in place, changing the plumbing wasn’t easy, so Kia’s inspired solution was to conceal pipework in a feature nib wall that doubles as a shelf running along the main wall. Clad in terrazzo-look porcelain tiles that travel down the lower half of the wall and across the floor, the effect is incredibly striking yet perfectly balanced. “The terrazzo-look tiles really informed the look and feel and added impact to the scheme,” says Kia. “They have a soft ivory base punctuated with warm terracotta, grey and black terrazzo chips, so I picked up the calm neutral tones in the custom vanity, shelving and the textural concrete basin so the room still felt soft and subtle.” Another masterstroke was enhancing the sense of space and natural light with reflective surfaces. Bespoke mirror doors opposite a window reflect the garden view and open up like a butterfly. No longer drab, this new take on neutrals is oh-so elegant.

2

FUNCTIONAL & FAB

A benefit of using a terrazzo-look tile is the practicality of porcelain. “We loved this tile, because it’s very true to its natural form with the ‘terrazzo chips’ embedded into the entire depth and it’s really easy to clean,” explains designer Kia. “It doesn’t require the maintenance associated with sealed natural terrazzo and its matt finish is a great anti-slip surface in the walk-in shower.”

GREEN DREAM A NSW FARMHOUSE IS GIVEN A FRESH FEEL WITH A DECADENT ENSUITE THAT MAKES THE MOST OF ITS PICTURESQUE OUTLOOK Words KYLIE JACKES Photography NICKI DOBRZYNSKI

WOW FACTOR

The original arched windows (opposite) are the undeniable hero of this calming space, with the full redesign shaped around maximising their impact. “We explored various layout options but, ultimately, the bay provided the perfect location for a large bath,” explains designer Alanna. The Victoria + Albert ‘Cheshire’ bath, teamed with exquisite Perrin & Rowe tapware from The English Tapware Company, completes the scene against the backdrop of Jatana tiles. “The feature tiles were key as they help prevent the fixtures being lost in such an open space,” adds Alanna.

TAKE A SEAT

The shower, done in waterfall Zellige tiles in Moss from Tiles by Ezra (left), and with a roomy seat and English-style tapware, feels like an immersive wet room. Carrara marble tiles from Tiles by Kate add sophistication across the floorspace and beautifully define an inset storage niche and seat. “The new, enlarged space allows the clients to shower in comfort,” explains Alanna. >

s soon as interior designer Alanna Smit, of Alanna Smit Structural Interiors, set foot on her client’s sprawling acreage, she knew that beautiful shades of green would play a key role in the redesign of the farmhouse’s interior. “There’s an abundance of natural textures and colours in the beautiful gardens to draw inspiration from, so the Carrara and green story was born,” Alanna says of the soothing scheme used in the home’s ensuite. While the palette came together effortlessly, reworking the floor plan took some serious problemsolving skills. “It had been renovated at some stage in the ’80s, but it didn’t in any way complement the original house and, with leaky fixtures and a tiny sink and shower, it lacked functionality,” says Alanna. Working closely with builder Ben Ash, they devised solutions to improve structural issues and include modern comforts, reconfiguring the layout and pinching extra space to create a luxury shower area. A statement bathtub was also installed below the original decorative bay windows that frame garden views and underpin the room’s unique style. “We really wanted to create a distinctive one-of-a-kind feel, so we combined traditional and contemporary elements like the classic Carrara marble floor paired with hand-painted feature tiles, which add character to the homestead,” says Alanna. Elements including the vintage glass pendant, old English-style tapware and green marble drawer knobs from Anthropology also inject charm and personal style.

UNSUNG ICONS:

AQUARIUMS COMEDIAN DAVID SMIEDT TAKES AN IRREVERENT, BUT APPRECIATIVE, LOOK AT THE CLASSIC THINGS THAT DEFINE YOU-BEAUT AUSSIE LIFE ILLUSTRATION MATT COSGROVE

H

ere’s something that may astound our younger readers – bless your millennial socks. For decades, most Australian homes had but one screen in them and that was the telly. The idea that you could have a computer in your room, let alone on your lap, or a telephone that you’d prefer to send messages on rather than talk, was utterly fanciful. If you wanted to escape into another visual world, the choices were magazines (yay!) or whatever your olds decreed was going to be on the box that night. Then, along came aquariums – universes unto themselves that could sit neatly on a child or teenager’s desk. The most basic of these housed a goldfish or two, or, if you had a bit more cash, a belligerent Siamese fighting fish, which was so aggressive it would flamboyantly charge its own reflection. All you needed was a glass vase or bowl that had fallen from fashion, a couple of dollars’ worth of pellets and a flushable toilet in case things went south. Many a funeral took place beside the Fowler Vitreous – before we knew this was actually an environmental no-no. Because goldfish were so cheap, you often had a bit of pocket money left over to spend on tank decoration: this could be marbles, stones or plants that ran the whole gamut from natural to as fake as a $20 Gucci anything. If the bug bit (and for many of us it did so hard it practically left teeth marks), we graduated from spare glassware on to rectangular purpose-designed tanks that were roughly, at a minimum, the size of today’s desktop printers. They came with filters that became encrusted with slime and made you gag when you cleaned them – once in the kitchen sink and then forever outside. They were also often equipped with a game-changing water heater that opened up the universe of tropical fish. As beguiling as goldies were, they simply didn’t hold a piscine candle to the neon tetras, tiger barbs and guppies whose bodies looked like peripatetic Dali canvases in miniature. Fish tanks gave three things to many young Australians: the first, a sense of responsibility – a literal dip in the water of pet ownership from parents unconvinced as to whether you could be trusted with a quadruped. The second was an entirely new world of the kind of obsessive nerdery kids adore, one that necessitated its very own vocab. When else could you use the word ‘gourami’ in a sentence? The third factor was that it was the only part of the house you could

178

HOMEBEAUTIFUL.COM.AU

decorate however you wanted. Budget permitting, it was an aqueous state where you, alone, were aesthetic emperor. Glittering ichthys aside – told you about the geeky vocab – if you wanted to make your tank a natural scene with undulating greenery and driftwood, that was your call. The ceramic bridge to nowhere was also quite a fetching addition for a vaguely Atlantis-meets-Japanesegarden vibe. For something a bit wilder, gravel in the most day-glo acid colours was also available, complete with licensed Spongebob Squarepants figures and faux corals in shades Pantone would baulk at. Speaking of merch, back in 2003, a seismic shift took place with the release of the classic animated feature film Finding Nemo. Seemingly overnight, saltwater aquariums went from being a passion for nextlevel, committed enthusiasts to the hottest item on Santa wish lists right across the country. And you couldn’t just get a clownfish. Heaven forbid. At the very least, he/she would need an anemone to nestle in, a starfish like Peach for company and an expensive filtration system to ensure this particular home movie didn’t come to a tragic and floating end. Of course, once this was all in place, the recipient who had gone to bed only the night before in a state of transcendent joy would then
