EXTRACTING FORCEPS
Dental forceps are pliers like instruments that are used grasp teeth.
A dentist will usually have a number of different ones on hand, each having that’s tailored to.
The specific shape of the tooth it’s intended to remove (such as incisors vs molars having two roots vs molars having three roots).
The location of the tooth in the mouth (such as front vs back or left lower molar vs right upper molar).
A dentist will grasp a tooth with their forceps and then firmly and deliberately rock it back and forth as much as it will.
Because the bone that surrounds the tooth is compressible, the socket will gradually start to expand.
As it does, the range of the dentist side to side motions will increase.
In addition to this rocking motion, the dentist will also rotate the tooth back and forth.
This twisting action helps to rip and hear the tooth away from the ligament that binds it in place.
At some point, the socket will be enlarged enough and the ligament torn away enough that the tooth can be easily.

Dental Root Elevators
The tip of an elevator is designed to be wedged into the ligament space between a tooth and its surrounding bone, to loosen tooth or root from bone socket prior to placement of the extraction forceps
Our range of single ended elevators, come in a variety of sizes. The handles may be either large and straight or T-bar/crossbar design.
TIP: Select the appropriate size of instrument for the size of the root. The size of instrument required may change as the tooth loosens, i.e. smaller diameter instruments may be required to cut periodontal ligament apically than required at the start of the extraction
Dental Luxators
Luxating Elevators are designed to make extractions as trauma-free as possible by cutting the periodontal ligament while easing the tooth from the socket. It is used by rocking and cutting, rather than lifting and prying like a conventional elevator. Patterns include both straight and curved blades, ranging from 2 mm to 5 mm, and are made of a one-piece stainless steel construction.
TIP: Luxators should not be used for leverage as this will damage the fine working end

The types of hand instruments can be categorized based on their function.
Mouth Mirrors are used to examine the condition of the teeth and mouth, as well as to retract the tongue and cheeks upon examination.
Probes There are many probes available but the main types are the straight probe. Briault probe and periodontal probe.
The straight probe is sharp and it is used to examine cavities in the dentine region as well as to check the margins of restorations or fillings.
The briault probe is also sharp and it is used to detect the junction between the enamel and dentine. Briault can also be used to detect tartar hidden in the gum pockets.
A periodontal probe can be used to measure the depth of the gum pockets and for other measurements.
Instruments for cutting and scraping tissue and deposits.
Scalers remove tartar (calculus) on the tooth surface as well as those hidden in the gum pockets. They can also be used to remove other surface deposits and temporary crowns.
Excavators are used to remove softened dentine. And temporary fillings. The back of the blade can also used for placing lining between filling materials. Sometimes excavators can be used for carving metal or amalgam fillings. Chisels; are used to remove unsupported enamel during cavity preparation. Unsupported enamel can be harmful for it can compromise the longevity of the filling if not removed.Hatchets and hoes have similar purposes to chisels.
Instruments used for placing and condensing filling material. Some instruments have rounded ends for shaping and burnishing the surface of fillings.
Plastic instruments are usually made of stainless steel for most material though there are also thin Teflon-coated or titanium nitride instruments which are non-stick for composite fillings. Condensers or pluggers are used for compressing and forming filling materials. Heavy pressure is applied on use therefore these instruments are usually used for amalgam or metal fillings.

A bard parker handle with a No.15 blade is the usuak scalpel used to make incision on the gums where a flap can be raised to gain access to tooth.
Retractors
Tongue, Cheek and flap retractors are needed to provide adequate access to the both and are legion in number.
Needle Holders and Sutures
Sutures are used to replace and secure the gum flap in its former position, to limit the size of the wound and therefore restrict subsequent contamination with food debris, and to assist in controlling bleeding. The usual suture size for intra oral work is 4/0 and the material may be absorable or non absorable scissors dissecting scissors and suture cutting scissors are usually used.
Atery Forceps
These are designed to hold soft tissue without damaging it. College tweezers are used to lift up sutures prior to removing them.
Periosteal Elevators
A number are available and are similarly used like a normal elevator but periosteal elevators have two heads-one at each end.
One end is sharp tipped to expand the tooth socket while the other has a blunt and to remove granulation tissues or raise a gum flap.
Chisels and Mallets
Chisels are more appropriate in the operatinf theatre and are particularly useful for disto angular third molars and upper wisdom.
Bone Curettes
The mitchells trimmer is probably the most valuable instrument in the category and is used to remove granulation tissue in the tooth socket
