» THE CONTEST An international photography competition now in its seventh edition. A world wide stage on which to get noticed for photographers. A tour of exhibits and an international photo festival. URBAN International Photo Awards is a world wide photo contest that has come to its 7th edition. URBAN looks for talent and quality both among professional and amateur photographers, offering them an international stage from which to get noticed. Promoted by dotART, a Trieste (Italy) based cultural association with years of experience working in the field of artistic photography and the visual arts, URBAN sees every year thousand of partecipating pictures and hundreds of participants from all over the world. It is an always growing international contest, one of the very few that goes “over the boundaries” of Internet offering to photographers real visibility through dozens of international photo exhibitions. Only in 2015 URBAN realized 28 exhibitions displaying about 600 pictures. Behind it all, there is always the pursue of enhancement of photographic talent and quality. URBAN is divided into two sections: one is dedicated to “Themed Photos”, with its main theme about Street Photography, which has formerly given the name to the contest since its first edition. Real, instant images capable of telling stories woven into the urban fabric. URBAN unveils the city and its secrets. In addition to street, URBAN 2016 will carry two more themes: Sports and Nature. The other section is “Projects & Portfolios” where each participant can submit a series of images oriented to show his or her idea through photographs. Other than regular prizes, URBAN gives the chance to the best ranked photographers to enter its tour of travelling photo exhibitions, the real and tangible value of this contest. Since 2011 URBAN has setup exhibitions in Poland (Krakow and Warsaw), Hungary (Budapest, Pécs and Miskolc), Cyprus (limassol, Paphos and Nicosia), Latvia (Riga), Slovenia (Koper), Ukraine (Sumy), Colombia (Bucaramanga) and naturally, in Italy (Trieste and Rome). Absolute novelty this year for URBAN is the partenrship with the Zavičajni muzej Poreštine (Museum of the Parentine Territory of Poreč), the oldest museum of Istria (Croatia). Three ranked photographers from the “Projects & Portfolios” section –the Winner and two photographers selected directly by the curators of the museum– will see their works exhibited in the Museum from July 21st to August 31st (forty days during tourist peak averaging 120,000 people in the summer time). Moreover, the Museum will release an official certificate of exhibition.

» 2016 JURY Over the years, URBAN’s jury has featured numerous personalities from the world of art and photography. Photographers Zbigniew Podsiadło, Inez Baturo, Gonzaga Manso, Liesa Cole and many others have chosen to get involved in this international event. Elena Uljančić-Vekić [Croatia] Director of Poreč Museum (Zavičajni muzej Poreštine). Her interests are the local culture and history of the Poreč area, history of the everyday, archives and photography.

Grzegorz Kosmala [Poland] Founder, publisher, and editor-in-chief of two online magazines dedicated to contemporary documentary (DOC! photo magazine) and fine art (contra doc!) photography

Pepe Castro [Spain] Born in Madrid in 1963. Photographer and COO at DNG Photo Magazine.

GMB Akash [Bangladesh] Photographer who has received more than 80 international awards and my work has been featured in over 90 major, international publications including: National Geographic, Vogue, Time, Sunday Times, Newsweek, Geo, Stern, The Guardian, The Economist.

Rathika Ramasamy [India] Arguably one of India’s foremost wildlife photographers. She is based in Chennai and New Delhi. An MBA/Computer Engineer, she was drawn towards the photographic capture of this drama as a career in 2003 at Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, a UNESCO world heritage site. Rohit Vohra [India] One of Asia’s most prominent street photographers, and is the co-founder and Editor-in-Chief APF magazine, a widely-respected publication dedicated to unearthing new and emerging street photography talent.

Mozart Mesquita [Brazil] Partner in FHOX, oldest publication focused in the universe of the image in Brazil. FHOX is responsible for Fotografar SHOW, the biggest Photo Event of Brazil. Giancarlo Torresani [Italy] Director of the Teaching Department of FIAF, cultural operator in visual communication, critic and portfolio-reader expert.

Chris Gampat [U.S.A.] Founder and photo editor of The Phoblographer. Former paparazzi, portrait photographer, wedding photographer, and photojournalist.

Alex Liverani [Italy / U.K.] London-based Italian photographer. Alex has a master in contemporary documentary photography to DOOR Akademy of Rome.

Karol Liver [Poland] Photographer, curator, TEDx speaker, educator, founder and chief editor of Prism - editorial collective dedicated to contemporary photography.

Adrian Mirgos [Poland] Photographer who mainly deals with reportagedocument in a combination of emotions and shades of gray. Sometimes he tries to draw emotions only through the light.

Kushti is a traditional form of Indian wrestling. Practiced in an Akhara, the wrestlers, under the supervision of a guru, dedicate their bodies and minds to Kushti on average for 6 to 36 months. Wearing only a well-adjusted loincloth (langot), wrestlers or Pelwhans enter a pit made of clay, often mixed with salt, lemon and ghee (clarified butter). This clay, representing Mother Earth is renewed every 2 years. Before every match, each wrestler covers the body of his adversary with this earth. During combat, the coated bodies meld with the color of the arena. It is also a spiritual quest and a spartan lifestyle that requires rigorous discipline as in all martial arts. Experienced wrestlers set the example and transmit their skills in the pit and in the community to younger boys (7-8 years old) and new recruits, whereby promoting camaraderie, respect, solidarity and fraternity.

I Heard a Crack: Observations on Muay Thai studio@lordk2.com

The blaring rhythmic drone of traditional Thai music crackles out of the speakers. The smell of spilt whisky and beer is strong as two pre-pubescent’s bow in prayer on the floor of the ring. This is Muay Thai, Thailands national sport, poetically referred to as ‘The Art of Eight Limbs’. Moments later the fighters are bombarding one another with fists, shins, elbows and knees. The sport is renowned for its brutality and grace, it’s steeped in ancient traditions and laced with Buddhist beliefs. Beyond the ring Muay Thai is a way of life filled with constant studying, training and drills. Fighters will devote their entire life to the sport, often living in the training camps. To be a champion you have to start early. Kids as young as 10 racked up 100 fights can be found boxing in competitive bouts across the nation, each intending to be revered as a great champion.

No Cure for Stigma

When many of us fall sick we can rely on the help and sympathy of our friends and family, but what happens if you tell them you have Leprosy? One of the great misunderstood diseases on the planet, leprosy attacks the nerves, leading to numbness, lesions, infection and ultimately disfigurement. It is easily treated with a simple course of drugs costing only a few dollars but the stigma is harder to cure. In the North-West Bangladesh region of Sylhet a remarkable hospital was established; their aim was to not only treat the medical problems but also help with the other areas of their lives that the disease affected. Teaching them cleanliness to guard against future infection and rudimentary training towards some form of self employment like weaving, sewing or running a small shop. They recognised that many of the sufferers were socially ostracised after contracting the illness and regardless of the fact they had been cured, remained so. Education, employment, marriage, things we often take for granted as part of our lives become unattainable goals for many of them. Reputedly the worlds oldest recorded disease, sufferers are fighting from attitudes built over millennia. If the symptoms become advanced they are almost impossible to hide, leaving the affected person to contemplate not only their medical predicament, but also the prospect of a life of rejection and isolation.

Since I was a child, I had the great fortune to spend a lot of time with my grandfather Alido, born in 1926. I had the opportunity to dive into his big passion that is to breed, train and take care of homing pigeons in order to attend provincial and interprovincial speed championships. He started as a pigeonsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; lover in the far 1952 by subscriving to the Italian Federation. Day after day he never stopped, remaining among the most long-lived national breeders and keeping on passing his own desire and determination to the youngest.

Often, we come across images which have very little in common regarding their subject, yet which seem to be closely resembled. It is a sort of unintentional recollection, where retained images in our memory appear in newly encountered situations, phenomena, or objects. Some might call it Déjà vu - as an anomaly of memory, which creates a distinct impression that an experience is “being recalled”. Subconsciously similar motifs draw one’s attention. Individual elements of compositions, or colour combinations, all bring deeply embedded memories of past experiences. The set of photographs evolved from images collected over the years, taken in different locations and at different times.

The Visible City / La città visibile gmariniello@libero.it

The title of the portfolio has been inspired to Italo Calvino’s book, Invisible Cities, described by Marco Polo to Kublai Kan: an atlas of fantasy cities with women’s names. It has also to do with the predominant visual aspect of contemporary cities. I began this work some years ago with the idea to record some transformations of the landscape of Rome due to the extensive use of big posters or billboards on building or means of transportation which began to invade the city. The economic globalization has given birth to a visual globalization, so that in these images it is difficult to say if we are in New York, London or Rome. We are all living in what Cohen-Séat defines an ‘iconosphere’, a universe of artificial images, produced on an industrial scale created for a growing population which needs an everyday consumption of images. Moreover I have tried to emphasize the unusual relationship between the ‘real’ city and the one create by publicity through an ironic and surreal vision: a woman who seems to drink at a fountain, a Concorde which flies in a paper sky, some mysterious running figures…a gigantic paper world which breaks into our real world. So in a way my work has not only a adocumentary aim, but has to do with the theme of illusion and reality where the city becomes a metaphor of our lives. The photos have been taken with analogic cameras and have not been digitally modified. Even if some of them seem to be collages, they represent exactly what my eye and the camera have seen.

These images are part of a documentary project I photographed in England and Wales between 1976 and 1978. I wanted to examine the British people in a spontaneous way. As leisure time is a quintessential component of British life, I decided to document weekend events and outings: carnivals, dog shows, village fetes, hoses races. I photographed working class families at villege fetes and vacationing at the seaside as well as the privileged classes at Epson Derby and the Windsor Horse Show. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m interested in people being themselves, not influenced by anyoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s preconceived notions, including my own. My objective is to seek out and capture people in unguarded moments that reveal something universal about what it means to be human. It thrills me to capture a meaningful split second of life as it chances to exist.

Pain is temporary, while oblivion is permanent. Nevertheless, what is true is pain, not forgetting. Rabindranath Tagor The Srebrenica genocide is one of the episodes of the vilest of Europe contemporary history. Within a few days, in July 1995, about 8,300 boys and men were executed while 30,000 people made up of women, children and elderly were forced to abandon, by force, their villages. Many mass graves pleased the bodies of those executed in Srebrenica have not yet been exhumed, some because they are in scattered areas of landmines other because they do not know the location. Mothers and wives have decided to be buried together in this place their children and husbands, in the same place where they had seen them alive for the last time before they were handed over to their executioners vilely.

The rapadura is a food preparation consisting of unrefined raw cane sugar, made from sugar cane juice boiled and filtered. Molasses resulting from this process are beaten to have a more consistent compound and poured in the traditional rectangular shapes. The rapadura, known for its high caloric and nutritional value, rich in minerals, protein and vitamins, is used in many countries in South America as a sweetener or food. This report shows the entire production process, from harvesting of sugar cane to the finished product, in one of the last plants (“engenhos”) of Carirì still in function using ancient methods and craft tools.

In the city of São Paulo a lot of couples kiss in public places, especially in the subway. It is an intriguing phenomenon, frequently observed if you are lost in the city – center of this megalopolis estimated at 20 million people.In fact, São Paulo is the largest and most populous city of the southern hemisphere; it is also known as the Cidade da Garoa. The Garoa is a fine and quite invisible drizzle. It seems that the drops are floating in the atmosphere rather than falling down from the sky. For this reason the majority of its inhabitants point out weather, deslocamento and segurança as the main problems of the city. The deslocamento (displacement) concerns the time spent moving from a place to another, for example from home to office.In order to live happily in this megalopolis, a person should work and find a girlfriend in the same neighborhood where he lives. For this reason, some areas of the historical center of the city that once had a bad reputation, now are going to be repopulated of people: especially commuters of the emerging middle class, tired of spending most of the day on public transportation.However this phenomenon of redevelopment and repopulation of the city-center is relatevely new. Probably, for this reason,a lot of couples usually give passionate kisses in the subway because they are not so sure if they will have another chance in the future. Furthermore, São Paulo is perceived as a very dangerous place: assaults and robberies happen every day; being attacked is so common that this practice has almost become ritualized, even if it is rare to be hurt. However, the subway is perceived as a place where you can let your guard down and get involved in a passionate kiss, as if the world outside does not exist. Obviously safety is linked to a very unequal society: walking down the streets of downtown, you can realize not just how many people live in the street, but also how many helicopters fly through the sky. “And you were a difficult beginning I get away of what I don’t know And those who sell a different dream of a happy city Soon learn to call you reality Because your are the other side of the other side of the other side of the side” A verse of “Sampa”, a song of 1978 by Caetano Veloso. The author is singing as a Bahian immigrant just arrived in the city and surprised by the tricky city of São Paulo. With an estranged eye because foreign, as with a voyeuristic and personal approach, this project wants to tell about the Cidade of Garoa.

There are 2.5 million cars in Ireland. At 8am driving 20km (north to the south) through Dublin takes from 1.5 to 2 hours. You can go through the city centre, on the outskirts of the city centre or the ring road, though during the busiest hours, timewise it is almost the same, and if an accident occurs, it takes even longer. Throughout this time usually I am able to pick everything out of my nose, at least three times in a row. In the rear view mirror I can see that drivers do the same, many even eat what they find. I do not eat it. During this two-hour drive in first and second gear, I change radio stations several times, I use the horn on slow drivers and move off quickly (while staring at good looking women on the street) when I hear the sound of a horn from behind. In the wing mirrors I can see people eating breakfast or dinner (not simple sandwiches but a big portion of soup slurped from a plastic container), women powdering their nose, putting on lipstick, doing eyebrows. I even saw a man quite extensively squeezing black heads, another doing exercises and another shaving his head while driving. Despite the risk of penalty points for using a mobile phone while driving, many do not care and speak without the use of a hands-free device. Actually, this does not surprise me, after all Ireland is a place where pedestrians, along with the police cross roads on red lights. The wing mirrors are passed by cyclists within inches. These guys squeeze through every possible gap between vehicles. Some of them wait for a light to turn green; others seem to ride as if rushing during a race. Cyclists of different experience, fitness and imagination. There is also a good amount of those without imagination, for instance a cyclist overtaking someone at the front and suddenly, without warning, turning under the wheels of my car. Fortunately, wise people ruling this country introduced a speed limit of 30 km p/h through the city centre, which saves the life of a cyclist. So every day we do co-exist, us, drivers on four wheels, them on two and you - on your feet. We hurry to work, home or a pub ... it is Tuesday, at 7pm ,’Astrolabe with Vlad Smishkewych’ on RTE’s Lyric FM has just started... cool! ... first gear and forward ...

At the beginning of my photographs series, were mostly of wild flowers very small dimensions, until today I still working in that, but suddenly in 2009 came the Megacerus, as a part of a research of the regional botanical garden Xiitbal neek that I become interesting in these little beetles commonly called weevils – seed predators such as beans, which is often identified as pests, which offer a fascinating when viewed in detail. As seen through the scanning electron microscope may be surprised by their varied forms, voluptuous and mysterious. The purpose of my photographs is to share this invisible world of nature, so small world in size (the family Bruchidae Megacerus reach a length of between 3 and 5 mm) is not always available to our eye. It is an invitation to enjoy our gardens, parks, forests, and especially, botanical gardens, through scientific images to enjoy, appreciate, respect and love for nature In Mexico, there are hundreds of great researchers, microscopists and photographers doing interesting researches on everything that surrounds us and yet most images generated are published in scientific and rarely reach those great pictures our everyday world. So through photographic series, such as the Megacerus “seed beetles” can be also the voice of Mother Earth, is an invitation to look to the inward around us and find beauty in simple.

“Lightning or people, we´re both energy that manifest in different ways…” Hunting lightning means getting into the storm as close as possible to photograph the power and strength of nature along with the beauty of our civilization and watch them coexist in the same frame. My creative needs and the quest for adrenalin showed me the opportunity of capturing lightning in a unique way. The idea is to get them as close as possible and in a known context with which we can feel identified, in this case iconic building and monuments from Mexico City. The most impressive experience I´ve been at was the storm in “Ciudad Universitaria” on October 5th, 2014, it is the closest I´ve been to a positive strike, the most deadly of all. The amount of energy it generates can heat the air around it up to 30,000°C, that´s five times hotter that the surface of the sun and it is that abrupt change in temperature what produces the powerful sound that we all know as “thunder”. When I´m in the middle of a storm and lightning strikes, everything goes in slow motion, you can see the complete journey of it, see how it turns the night into day for an instant and feel how the thunder makes everything around you resound. It is an intense moment, joy and fear makes you shudder with an unusual combination of emotions that feeds your soul... Each lightning strike is unique and very few times can we see them carefully in urban areas. Through photography we can admire their beauty, their chaotic shapes known as “Lichtenberg figures”, understand their magnitude, their closeness with us and even hear them...

Monica is a mother with four children and runs a Bed & Breakfast near Modena, in Italy, which no longer exists. The villa of the early 800â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s where she lived with her family and welcomed guests, was severely damaged by the earthquake of 2012. Its destiny is to be demolished.

The portfolio presented here is a sort of imaginary diary following a trip to Armenia. The memory of its monasteries performed through photographic sketches made by Polaroid transfer on watercolour paper. Frescoes of monasteries isolated by steep cliffs become graffiti detached from the rock of the emotions: a way to transfer the reality in an imaginary game to reach the areas of the suggestion. Reminiscences appointed by the impressions of the trip and processed by the factory of the nostalgia in a weaving graphics where the filter of memory marks the infinite possibilities of instant photography. In the emulsions of photographic gelatine the facades of churches and monasteries become the feeling that pass over the memory. An universe tinted by reminiscences, in which the blurred reflection of the past is hidden in the shelter of stones that often bear the traces of events pigeonholed in the history. The photographic gelatine loses the rigor of the camera lens and its dependence on the light, but opens the lids of the time that seems to listen the words used by Osip Mandelstam to define Armenia: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Kingdom of screaming stonesâ&#x20AC;?

The term usually refers to children (males) and Boys. The Guide who instructs a Talibè is named “Marabout”. The “Daara” is the place where Talibès live and study. On the floor they study, on the floor they sleep, on the floor they eat. Annexed to it there is the house where the Marabout lives with his family and it is clearly visible the difference in the treatments between Marabout’s children and talibès who adore him (maybe obliged or maybe merely to attract attentions of the Marabout). According to the idea of the Marabout, Talibès learn the values of the community life like courtesy, solidarity, endurance, obedience, and humility only through the reading of the Koran. Actually, for parents, steering their own children towards the studying of the Koran is a hard task due to destitution problems, hence the Talibè is usually entrusted to the Marabout by his parents at the age of Three years old, attending a school hundreds kilometres far from his originating village, in order to avoid attempts of escape caused by his incomprehension of living far from his family. The entrustment to the Marabout has no juridical bases, it is established on a habit belonging to an old and pre-existing system, whose evaluation is around two thousand children, many of them with no birth certificate, no identity. The “Daara” then is the only educational structure these children can live and, unfortunately, without any kind of support by their families, their communities of origin and government and very often the only way survive is begging. Huge is the responsibility of the Marabout, who must be both a muslim educator and a kind of spiritual guide. A “Daara” to arise or exist does not need any validation or authorization, so several of them were founded by people with no scrubs who declared theirselves Marabout with the only purpose of taking advantage of begs of hundreds children, deducing huge profits and exposing the Talibès to any sort of danger, malnutrition, bad hygienical and life conditions, abuse and mistreatments. Begging, that originally was used together with the working in fields to learn humility, today is a rule and this completely transforms the term Talibè from He who searches for knowledge to he who demands, giving the term Talibè the meaning of begging. The pictures were taken in the Daaras of Yene, Niangal and Toubab Dialaw, Rural community of Yene.

My work takes a critical view of social issues in relation to human rights violations. But I always try to stay away from the purely journalistic event. I want to know and show the anonymous people who suffer in their own skin. I’m curious about human nature and the ability to react to the difficulties. The serie “On The Shore” seeks precisely this personal encounter with those who have suffered the terrible experience of war. I traveled to the beaches of Lesvos Island (Greece), where half of the million people reached Europe in 2015 fleeing from Middle East conflicts and wars took the first step in European land. I found there hundreds of journalists and photographers. I had to contain myself to avoid the media show. I waited the refugees to regain their breath. Waiting for the right moment in which gestures of these people talked to me about them, about their past. I always liked the idea of a portrait that does not speak of the present. As the starlight that comes with delay, sometimes what we see in a portrait tells us about the past. In On The Shore I look for what these people left behind. I saw broken people hit by the saltpeter war. I think their eyes were united by the same beat. I saw the confused gesture of those who still shake the scars left on the skin, without being able to see yet what the future holds. This shore became border. It is a horizon crushed between two skies. The Mediterranean Sea was for centuries a meeting point of different cultures, but now is a barrier, an insurmountable wall for the many more who lost their breath in it.

We live in a difficult period, where profit is the basis of the days, and where to myths of “crisis” new generations undertake demoralized to seek employment, even unhappy, but that can satisfy their daily lives. Thoughts that just are processed in my mind during a boring way home in the car, but just at that moment, a white van braked sharply in front of me. On the hood a handwritten phrase “Who does not love the Blues has a hole in the soul.” All of a sudden like a succession of images, Robert Johnson, Howlin ‘Wolf, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Muddy Waters, B.B. King and many others who like frame one another, and each of them with their penetrating gaze, and embraces the guitar ... The music, I think, the universal language, the “only true way to get everyone to agree ... I think it will have? thought the same Eugenio Ligato, young Calabrian Luthier that after years of studies and with different difficulty opening his shop in our historic downtown ... the illustrious and reckless town ?, Cosenza. Chitarreria the sign says, because liuteria perhaps does not perform well his relationship with the guitar that Eugenio considers his instrument par excellence. The sap of the same wood used in its construction seems the blood of the universal music. And the music as communication, as passion, the desire to change, as “being alive.” On the other hand even Jim Morrison argued that one day the war would have bowed to the sound of a guitar.

Summer Attitude is a project on the beach. The sea, the sand, are places where we get naked, we strip off our clothes, but also of our inhibitions, showing us the other for what we are, with our qualities and our faults. The sea life is different, the rules change daily, the boundaries of what is allowed to expand and our most primitive part comes out. Todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s society, the media, politics, religion, focus our attention on what divides us: the differences. Summer Attitude intended as a journey, with your feet on the shore and ironic eye, aimed at those small things that make us smile and the little things that unite us, such as the sea that surrounds us. All pictures were taken in Rimini in Summer 2015.

Rapid eye movement, indicated most frequently with the acronym REM, is the “rapid eye movement” that occurs during a sleep phase usually accompanied by dreams. The primary process of dreams is characterized by the free flow of impulses and instincts, by the absence of logical connections and timelessness. In the dream, the main mechanism is moving: a representation (mental) can replace a ’Other or more meanings may coalesce into a’ Unique representation. Our brain stores the events marking them with a ‘Yet’, that is, with an icon. When we are conscious (ie awake), it may happen that a perfume, a face or an action sets in motion this icon and we face resurfacing a memory. When we sleep, however, the impulses and instincts are freed. Then all the archive pictures of the memories flow freely, it mixes in an unstoppable stream of consciousness. With this project I tried to evoke and to stage these processes that trigger deeper parts, unconscious, but common to all human beings. So a relentless succession of images, projections, memories and impulses; a mixture against which we try to strive and which, once awake, try to give a meaning. What you see are ‘My’ icons.

In the remote Liangshan, Sichuan Province lives such a mom. She lost her husband and now live alone with her children working in the cities. She is poor, hardly having new or good clothes. The living condition is also heart-breaking. A shabby house with no floor, a simple plank bed.She seldom has a chance to take a shower. She told me about the story of her children and showed me the picture. I lent my phone to her when I met her and she phoned her children. She missed them and tears ran out.
