WASHINGTON, D.C. — P resident Joe Biden nominated Adm. Linda L. Fagan to serve as the 27th Commandant of the U .S. Coast Guard. Upon c onfi rmation, Adm. Fagan w ill be the fi rst woman to serve as Commandant of the Coast Guard.

Adm. Fagan currently serves as the 32nd V ice Commandant, having assumed the duties J une 18, 2021. The V ice Commandant is the V ice S ervice C hief and C hief Operating Offi cer, responsible for executing the Commandant’s Strategic Intent, managing internal organizational governance, and serving as the Component Ac quisition Executive.

Previously, Adm. Fagan served as Co mmander of the Coast Guard Pacifi c Area overseeing operations from the Ro cky Mountains to the waters off th e East Coast of Africa. The Pacifi c Area Co mmander concurrently serves as Co mmander, De fense Force We st providing Coast Guard mission support to the De partment of De fense and Combatant Commanders. Adm. Fagan is the Coast Guard’s fi rst-ever Gold Ancient Trident, as the offi cer with the longest ser vice rec ord in the Marine Safety fi eld. Pending con fi rmation, Adm. Fagan is exp ected to relieve the current Commandant of the Coast Guard, Adm. Karl L. Schultz, during a change of command ceremony planned for June 1, 2022, in Was hington, D.C . Adm. Schultz wil l retire fol lowing the change of command this sum mer. “Admiral Fagan is an exceptional sen ior Coast Guard offi cer and nominee, possessing the keen intellect, the depth of operational experience, and the well-honed leadership and managerial acumen to serve with distinction as our Ser vice’s 27th Commandant,” said Adm. Schultz.

Adm. Fagan has been selected and the president has nominated Vice Adm. Steven D. Poulin as the Coast Guard’s 33rd Vice Commandant. Vice Adm. Poulin currently serves as the Comma nder of the Coast Guard Atlantic Area and is responsible for all Coast Guard Missions from the Rocky Mountains to the Arabian Gulf. The Atlantic Area Comma nder concurrently serves as Comma nder, Coast Guard Defen se Force East providing Coast Guard mission support to the Depar tment of Defen se and Combatant Commanders.

Pending confirmation, Vice Adm. Poulin is expec ted to relieve Adm. Fagan as Vice Commandant of the Coast Guard during a change of watch ceremony planned for May 24, 2022, in Washi ngton, D.C.
