Jordan is set to take centre stage as the Middle east’s hottest winter sun destination, with two major new resort developments, ayla and saraya, representing a cool billion dollars of investment in the red sea resort town of aqaba. the two new resorts herald the arrival of a veritable visitor’s playground at aqaba, with new hotels, ocean and land adventures, a gleaming new marina, stellar dining and beach clubs all set to tempt sunseekers to the waterfront area.

circling a new lagoon that adds 1.5km of beachfront to Jordan’s shoreline, saraya aqaba features both residential and tourism elements, including four five-star hotels (two Jumeirah properties, a Luxury collection and a Westin) offering luxury spas, private lagoon beaches, kids clubs, international dining venues, dive centres and business and conference facilities. Jumeirah will also manage aqaba’s first waterpark, modelled after its hugely successful Wild Wadi Waterpark in dubai.

nearby, ayla will consist of five districts, with one phase (including 150 residential units, greg normangolf course and beach club) already up and running. the next phase – including a hyatt regency, 279 golf residences and a Marina Village, dining, retail and entertainment hub – is set for completion next year. The shanghai edition (below), launching mid-2018, makes touchdown in a prime location at the corner of Nanjing road east and Henan road in puxi, a five-minute walk from The Bund’s bustling waterfront scene. Tucked into the front cabin of the upper deck, the exclusive suites (six on each aircraft) have sliding doors revealing full-flat beds plus reclining plush leather chairs, enabling guests to completely chill out – whether seated or lying down – without having to convert the bed from a seating position. Business class seats, at 25 inches wide, boast a carbon fibre composite shell structure, allowing more under-seat stowage space. Centre dividers also fully lower, to form double beds for couples or families travelling together. premium economy benefits range from active noise-cancelling headphones to personal in-seat reading light, a cocktail table and increased stowage space. spotlight oN peru

Peru is having a major moment right now, and visitors to this fascinating – and fast-evolving – south american star are set to reap the rewards. From world-beating cuisine that refuses to rest on its laurels, to breathtaking luxury rail journeys, new immersive conservation experiences and one beloved bespectacled bear, Peru’s certainly not fading from the luxury travel limelight any time soon. this month sees Inca Rail launch the scenic machu Picchu train, with panoramic windows that stretch up into the dome of each carriage (think Canada’s rocky mountaineer and you’re on the right track) and mod cons including a gPs-activated app offering location-specific information along the way. the launch follows the unveiling of the country’s first luxury sleeper train, the almost outrageously beautiful Belmond Andean Explorer, in may. traversing some of the most spectacular scenery on earth, the andean explorer boasts a variety of sumptuous cabins (complete with Peruvian-chic design accents) plus spa car, two opulent dining cars, a piano lounge bar and observation car (read: social hub) with open deck. Belmond has been busy in the region, adding the boutique Belmond Las Casitas in Colca Canyon to its luxe Peruvian portfolio. the 20-room property envelops guests in the serene beauty of the southern arequipa region; a true hideaway where nature reigns supreme and canyon treks, horse-riding and condor-spotting vie with leisurely downtime by the pool or in the spa.

Continuing the nature theme, eco-tourism innovator Inkaterra recently opened the doors of its amazonian research centre, the inkaterra guides Field station to visitors, offering a new kind of immersive nature experience. and specialist tour operator aracari has launched a different kind of unique insight into the country, this time via some of its most extraordinary residences; its Private Homes of Peru Collection includes Casa aliaga in Lima (dating back to 1527), which is reportedly the oldest home on the continent. things are heating up on the culinary side as well. this month sees Peru’s chef-of-the-moment, virgilio martinez of CENTRAL, open a new restaurant, lab and interpretation centre in moray, 45-minutes from Cusco. the aim? to put the andes on a plate, melding location and ingredients with the signature, painstaking authenticity for which he’s become lauded the world over (martinez also won the Chef’s Choice award at the world’s 50 Best restaurants awards in may, for his tireless dedication to showcasing his country’s produce). CentraL is also set to relocate from Lima’s miraflores district to bigger premises in Barranco. meanwhile, Lima’s Hotel B has launched new culinary experiences, featuring coffee shop tastings, visits to upscale local markets, and cookery and cocktail workshops. Finally, with Paddington Bear 2 – a native of Peru – hitting big screens recently and the 60th anniversary of the book’s release next year, this magical country looks set to capture even more of the spotlight in 2018.

Copenhagen, Denmark

The beautiful brainchild of Danish ballet dancer Alexander Kolpin, Sanders encapsulates what Copenhagen does oh so well – pared-back luxury, quiet confidence, and rich yet refined creative and cultural references. Here, guests enter a world that takes its cues from the stage (the Royal Danish Theatre is right in front of the hotel): think sumptuous upholstery within a subdued palette of forest greens, earthy clay and laidback rattan; all perfectly stage-lit by moody lighting. Solo travellers will delight in the train carriage-style Coupe rooms, and long-stay guests will love the Sanders apartment, complete with open fireplace, kitchenette and space to entertain. Sanders Kitchen offers up fresh regional fare that can be enjoyed in the chic tiled dining space, under the stars on the hotel’s rooftop Conservatory, or in front of a roaring fire in the leafy central courtyard. Tata, the hotel bar named after the Royal Danish Theatre’s beloved red velvet curtains, will no doubt draw local creatives to its sexy surrounds; and stylish staff are on hand to create curated Copenhagen experiences.

Nobis Hotel copeNHageN

Copenhagen, Denmark

Nobis Copenhagen has all the makings of a surefire Scandi hit: impeccable design credentials brought to bear in a landmark historic building; hot-to-trot standalone restaurant; and an enviable location, just of H.C. Andersen Boulevard, within stone’s throw of Tivoli Gardens. Starchitect Gert Wingardh has enhanced the Danish classicism of the original building by using materials including Carrera marble, stone, wood and glass. The grand scale is offset by ornate detailing, with soothing blues and greens working beautifully alongside warm blond wood furniture – much of it bespoke – and Nordic design classics add a modern, playful twist. Restaurant Niels, located in the attached annex with its own entrance, celebrates top-notch seasonal ingredients under the award-winning hand of Chef de Cuisines Jeppe Foldager (formerly of Alberto K), who recently obtained his hunter’s license in order to be able to serve meat from game he has hunted himself. Above and beyond? Yes. One to watch? You bet.

T

he horizon, a silver line that seems to drift in and out of sight as if in a dream, is gradually broken. The effect is subtle at first, almost like a trick of the eye, but as the towering icebergs rise above the sea like the vanguard of an approaching horde, there’s no mistaking their icy blue majesty. It’s dawn – or at least the transition between the shades of twilight that represents the birth of a new day this far south – and I’m manning the bridge of a state-of-the-art expedition vessel as she silently slices her way through near-frozen seas, into the depths of the rarely explored Antarctic Sound.

48

December 2017 dotwnews.com

Being able to go where others rarely do has become a central theme for well-heeled world wanderers from the Middle East and beyond. Whereas luxury travel was once defined by how large a resort’s infinity pool was, or how many hundreds of Egyptian threads dressed the bed, today, experiential travel – the pursuit of something more than leisure at its most somnolent – rules supreme. Suddenly everyone wants to see the Northern Lights from a hot tub, track Serengeti game on foot, or, at the top of many bucket lists, visit the vast, desolate beauty of Antarctica. So how do the wealthy stay ahead of the game, you might ask? Just like they do in the air; they go private, with a luxury charter yacht opening up a world of possibilities even the most intrepid can only dream of.

That’s where EYOS Expeditions comes in. A ground-breaking charter business founded by a clutch of hardy-yet-passionate travellers with rolodexes that would have raised the eyebrows of Don Draper, EYOS will take you, your friends, and your superyacht to almost anywhere on the planet. Don’t have a superyacht? The company also offers access to a myriad of world-class charter yachts, priced up to US$1 million a week, complete with expeditionary crew, offering affluent travellers the unique combination of luxury and logistics. All you have to choose is the locale, from the tropical atolls of the South Pacific, to the superyacht hubs of the Caribbean, to the polar bear hunting grounds of the Arctic. Or in our case, the towering peaks and frozen landscapes of the Antarctic Peninsula.

PHOTOS: Nick Walton

Clockwise from above: Other vessels in EYOS Expeditions’ fleet of adventure-ready ships include the Class 1 icebreaker Legend, which makes light work of navigating the Antarctic Sound; returning to the Hanse Explorer after an afternoon on the ice, guests get to indulge in little luxuries such as a trip to the sauna; with cabins for up to 12 guests, the Hanse Explorer offers exceptional levels of privacy.

D E S T I N AT I O N S A N TA R C T I C A

Vessels in EYOS’ expedition-ready fleet include Legend, a Class 1 Icebreaker; Enigma XK, a former fisheries patrol craft turned luxury expedition yacht capable of traversing the challenging Northwest passage; and the 55-metre Seawolf, which, with her deep draft and extensive range, is ideal for exploring the remote corners of the Pacific. However, we’re braving the coldest continent aboard one of EYOS’ most popular charter yachts, the Hanse Explorer. Part superyacht, part rugged expedition vessel, the Hanse is one of the few vessels globally that can truly claim to be an ‘expedition yacht’. But beneath the Ferrari-like aesthetics lie cuttingedge environmental systems, the highest rating

for an ice strengthened hull, powerful engines, a 9,000 nautical mile cruising range and the types of built-in gadgets that come in handy when you’re charting courses far from the beaten path. I’m on the second day of a week-long Antarctic cruise aboard the Hanse and I’m already seeing the difference a private charter yacht offers over my previous voyages to the White Continent. Describing Antarctica’s weather, and that of the dreaded Drake Passage – an oceanic line in the sand between South American and the ice – as temperamental, is being kind. Huge currents and rapid shifts in water temperature whip up storms from nowhere, often delaying even the best laid plans. We had flown from the Chilean town of

Punta Arenas to the gravel air strip on the King George Island in the South Shetlands – a chain of rocky outcrops on the cusp of the continent – a day late because of one particularly vicious squall that would have made life a nauseating misery for regular cruisers tackling the Drake for two days straight. However, having a private vessel at our disposal meant we could be more flexible with our itinerary. See something you like? Land on a beach where you just might be the first human visitor. Greeted by pods of humpbacks in the Gerlache Strait? Launch the zodiacs and put the champagne on ice. Even our shy Portuguese chef Luis Galego Pião follows the mantra: the destination comes first.

I

t’s an exciting time for the world of high-end hospitality. In the last 10 years, the emergence of the millennial traveller, the spread of the sharing economy, and a shift in the habits of business travellers have caused major disruption to an industry that was fairly set in its ways. The change in travel habits has created a landscape in which independent boutique hotels have flourished, offering individual design, curated experiences and high levels of personalisation for travellers in a way that larger chains could never achieve. Or could they? Reinventing a brand is never easy, but when the brand name literally means ‘rebirth’, it seems like destiny foretold. Enter Renaissance Hotels, the erstwhile grandpop of Marriott International, which has emerged from a major brand rethink as a collection of distinctive hotels infused with local flavour, artistic design and a palpable sense of place. Aimed at the business traveller who likes to play as hard as they work, the new-look Renaissance operates on the philosophy that between the hours of nine and five, business travellers are on the company dollar – attending meetings or conferences for the benefits of their employer. But for the rest of the day, their time is theirs to do with as they please, whether that’s exploring the local neighbourhood, dining out with friends, or looking for the best angle for their next Instagram shot.

HONEYMOON HEAVEN When you dream up the ideal honeymoon destination, what do you see? For the vast majority of us, it would look something very close to Furaveri Island Resort & Spa. The tropical 23-hectare coral island sits like a pearl among a necklace of islands in the Raa Atoll, just a short seaplane hop from Malé International Airport, or a domestic flight followed by speedboat. Loved-up honeymooners might only have eyes for each other, but their adoring gaze may break for a while to take in the surrounds – knock-out white-sand beaches, pod chairs swinging from coconut palms, the gently lapping turquoise sea – all in all, a scene seemingly plucked from a postcard. Among the inclusions in the “Experience Honeymoon” package are complimentary transfers and a VIP personalised villa check-in by a resort host; an utterly romantic, three-course, candle-lit dinner set up on your villa terrace or on the beach; a honeymoon bath ceremony with bubbles, petals and a bottle of sparkling wine; a 60-minute couples’ massage and spa discounts; a sunset cruise for two and a 30-minute photo session with a photographer, immortalising memories long after you return home. While London’s chocolatiers are a bit more conservative than Willy Wonka, kids staying at The Marylebone hotel can have their own Charlie Bucket moment, with a behind-the-scenes tour of the UK’s most famous toy store: Hamley’s. A personal guide will take the family on a historical tour of the shop, and those who get there early enough can have the honour of opening Hamley’s to shoppers. As a reward for their efforts, kids take away a gift bag and return to the hotel to find their own tepee bed set up: an in-room camping experience complete with indoor camping lamp, a hotel teddy bear, a ‘midnight feast’ of cookies and a flask of warm milk. The ‘Luxury Family Package’ at The Marylebone is available from $1,125 per night, including interconnected Luxury Suite and Deluxe Room, plus tepee set-up and kids amenities. www.doylecollection.com

JOIN MOWGLI FOR A JUNGLE BOOK ADVENTURE In a clever bit of packaging that’s guaranteed to bring out the inner child in everyone, two Taj Safari lodges in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh are inviting kids to follow in the footstep’s of The Jungle Book with its ‘Mowgli Trails’ programme. Kids staying at Baghvan in Pench National Park and Banjaar Tola in Kanha National Park can set out to look out for the animals that inspired the characters of Rudyard Kipling’s much-loved novel in the company of a naturalist who will bring the stories to life with real world interactions. Kid will also get to visit local tribal villages, then join in with Jungle Book-inspired quizzes and stargazing back at the lodges, accompanied by a Man Cub Village Menu or a Kipling-inspired Burra Sahib High Tea. At Banjaar Tola Lodge, 18 tented suites on a riverbank at the edge of the forest keep the Jungle Book fantasy alive, with bamboo floors, locally made furniture and traditional block-printed Madhya Pradesh cottons and silks throughout. www.tajhotels.com

TURTLE POWER IN SEYCHELLES Before the Oetker Collection took over Fregate Island Private – a lush tropical island in the Seychelles archipelago – it’s only visitors were fishermen, Hawksbill Turtles and a dwindling population of Giant Aldabra Tortoises. Today, the island’s discerning visitors can see the results of an extensive conservation and breeding programme, which has seen the tortoise population increase from just 150 to 2,200 animals, many of which can be spotted roaming freely around the island. Kids can explore with resident conservationist Tanya Leibrick, looking out for adult tortoises and visiting the nursery for babies. During nesting season, little ones can also join the island’s ecology team on sea turtle patrol, searching the beach for baby turtles. Although, if your youngsters prefer to laze by the pool, they are all set at one of the island’s two-bedroom Private Pool Residences, which each come with private infinity pool and terrace. Not enough space? Why not reserve your own private beach for the ultimate Robinson Crusoe experience. From $3,815 per night. www.fregate.com

laPita: World’s aPart Tucked away in the fun-filled world of Dubai Parks and Resorts, Lapita is a Tiki-themed hideaway that feels a million miles away from the bustle of Dubai. Joe Mortimer checks into a three-bedroom Private Villa and finds the ultimate family abode

F

rom the Hawaiian shirtwearing bellboys who greet you on arrival with a friendly ‘Aloha’, to the alloy racing wheels on the resort’s golf buggies, it’s immediately clear that Lapita isn’t your average Dubai resort. Situated in the heart of Dubai Parks and Resorts – the sprawling theme park city comprising Legoland, Legoland Water Park, Bollywood Parks and Motiongate – this one-of-a-kind Polynesian-themed property certainly does things differently. I’m checking into one of Lapita’s three enormous Private Villas: a palatial abode in a private corner of the resort with three en-suite bedrooms, a vast living and dining space with towering double-height ceilings, and a private pool, terrace and Jacuzzi that make this an ideal address for families.

76

My villa, ‘Ahi’, which means ‘fire’ in Hawaiian, faces north, and from the spacious terrace of the firstfloor master suite, I have a clear view of Motiongate and its new Hunger Games roller coaster, and the meandering river which runs around the resort. A circular day bed and dining table for two offer a bird’seye view of the pool and patio area, making this a great spot for mums and dads to enjoy some private time while still being connected to the outdoor space below. A four-poster bed occupies the centre of the suite, where dark brown furniture, Polynesian art and a feature lampshade gives the space plenty of character. In the bathroom, marble counter tops and his and hers sinks are embellished with signature amenities from Tommy Bahamas, and there’s plenty of wardrobe space for an extended stay.

“this oneoF-a-kind Polynesianthemed ProPerty certainly does things diFFerently”

A small landing outside the suite looks down on the living space, affording a close-up view of the central Dale Chihuly chandelier that floats above the sitting area. The magic of Lapita and this 307 sqm villa in particular is that it transports you away from the UAE and into a private world. Indoor plants and orchids bring the outside in, complementing the sea-grass green sofas and wicker armchairs in the living area. Guests are greeted by a piece of art depicting a giant coral leaf upon arrival, flanked by feature lamps and fiery orange woven stools. There’s more art throughout: a swirling seashell stands by the 65-inch Samsung TV, and a Polynesian batik-style print covers a piece of hand-made parchment above the six-seat dining table. My favourite is an enormous piece of ocean-beaten walnut, shaped by time and tide.

SPEND IT SUITE DREAMS

But the highlight of this villa is the outdoor space. A wall of bi-fold doors opens up in the living room to create an enormous indoor-outdoor arena, providinga generous amount of space in which children can run riot. A fountain wall behind the pool creates a permanent soundtrack (and helps with the Feng Shui, of course) and there’s plenty of outdoor seating for the whole family to spread out and make the most of Dubai’s balmy weather. Guests at Lapita receive a pass to enjoy the theme parks, and if you can tear yourself away from the villa, it’s only a short buggy ride to the main Dubai Parks entrance. On the journey, keep an eye out for Ari, the Mediterranean poolside restaurant, and Kalea, the resort’s all-day dining venue. For a more indulgent experience, drop the kids off at Luna & Nova Kids and Teens Club then book yourself in for a rejuvenating treatment at Ola Spa – you’ll need it after all those rides.

Part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection, Lapita is the only hotel in the theme park city. As well as the existing theme parks, the hotel is a stone’s throw from Dubai Outlet Village, where designer brands are available at discounted prices, and by 2019, another theme park, Six Flags, will open its doors next to Lapita. In the meantime, there’s plenty to keep the entire family busy, and with the plush surrounds of a Private Villa to call your home, the adults will be taken care of too.
