SIX SENSES FINDS NEW HOME IN ICELAND BLACK SAND BEACHES, DRAMATIC WATERFALLS and mystical elves are some of the sights visitors can expect to discover at Six Senses Össurá Valley, which is being developed on a 1,619-hectare estate in Iceland’s southeast coast. Flanked by the mountainous landscape of the Össurá Valley and Vatnajökull National Park to the north and the swan-nesting expanse of Lón Lagoon to the south, the project will include 70 rooms and cottages, 20 privately owned Six Senses-branded residences and a Six Senses Spa, all on the doorstep of some of Iceland’s most spectacular scenery. The country’s glacial landscapes,

active volcanoes and geothermal lakes provide plenty of opportunity for active visitors, and a programme of dog sledding and horseback excursions, ice and rock climbing trips and bird watching tours mean guests will be spoiled for choice. The main lodge will feature a library and cinema room, a water bar and an Earth Lab that showcases the sustainable initiatives implemented across the resort. Architect John Brevard, one of the project’s partners, promises a low-impact design incorporating locally sourced building materials and the highest standards of energy and water efficiency.

A traditional farmhouse and organic garden will permit chefs to create seasonal menus with produce grown on site as part of the company’s Eat With Six Senses programme, and guests will be able to hone their culinary skills at the resort’s cookery school. Destination dining will make the most of the natural setting, with the option to create a unique table for two at a traditional boathouse or next to a waterfall. And the elves? Look out for the pyramid shaped rocks that dot the landscape; locals think they might be home to Iceland’s huldufólk, ‘hidden people’ in traditional folklore. www.sixsenses.com

A WHITE HORSE IN PARIS THE CHEVAL BLANC COLLECTION WILL HAVE A NEW ADDITION IN THE FIRST HALF of 2020 following the opening of its newest maison, Cheval Blanc Paris. Details of the project are sparse, but a spokesperson for the company said the Art Deco-inspired property would be home to 36 rooms and 36 suites with views of the River Seine and the Eiffel Tower. Arnaud Donckele of three Michelin starred La Vague d’Or at Cheval Blanc St-Tropez will come aboard as head chef at the new Parisian hotel, which will occupy part of the former La Samaritaine department store, a stone’s throw from Pont-Neuf. The building is currently undergoing a major renovation led by Japanese architectural firm Sanaa, which has been tasked with restoring the original designs by Frantz Jourdain and Henri Sauvage. Opening a hotel in the home city of parent company LVMH is a major milestone for Cheval Blanc, which has elegant hotels and resorts in Courchevel, St. Barth, St. Tropez and the Maldives. www.chevalblanc.com

MOTION PICTURES ON THE TURKISH RIVERA

COMO SAYS CIAO TO TUSCANY COMO HOTELS & RESORTS CALLED ON THE CREATIVE direction of designer Paola Navone to breathe new life into COMO Castello Del Nero, a 740-acre estate in the Tuscan countryside where a 12th century castle takes centre stage. The Italian designer caught the world’s attention with COMO’s Point Yamu in 2013, where clean lines and a blue and white colour palette created a modern aesthetic for the Phuket hideaway. In Tuscany, the 50 guestrooms and suites are presented in neutral shades of grey and cream, with floors of terracotta tile and vaulted ceilings. Original fireplaces and 18th century frescoes capture the magic of the historic building, and windows look out at the bucolic Tuscan countryside. Gourmet culinary experiences abound: much of the produce used in Michelin-starred restaurant La Torre comes from the

kitchen garden, and the estate is home to olive groves, vineyards and its own bee hives. Executive chef Giovanni Luca Di Pirro oversees the restaurant, which moves between the castle’s former stables in the winter months and the garden terrace in the summer. The intact 12th century wine cellars are home to a generous selection of labels that appear on the menu of La Taverna, where traditional Italian cooking is served in an informal setting, and in the summer months, the Pavilion offers Mediterranean-inspired fare. The local area is home to plenty of local hikes and guided cultural experiences, and for those that prefer not to stray too far from their suites, there’s a COMO Shambhala Retreat for wellness and pampering. www.comohotels.com

IT SEEMS A SHAME TO HUNKER DOWN AND WATCH A MOVIE in your suite when you’re in an exotic location, especially when the weather is fair and the night young. That’s why The Bodrum EDITION has partnered with art house film-streaming service MUBI to launch its own beachfront cinema, so guests and locals alike can watch cult classics and award-winning movies with their feet in the sand. Screenings will take place every Monday night until the end of October, and hotel guests will be given a 30-day MUBI membership to enjoy during their stay and after their trip. The July line-up includes Paranoid Park by director Gus Van Sant, Caramel by Nadine Labaki and Yves Saint Laurent by Jalil Lespert.

CHOPARD WELCOMES CUSTOMERS HOME IN LONDON

SWISS WATCHMAKER CHOPARD is dialling up its luxury credentials with the reopening of its prestigious European flagship store in London’s Mayfair. Following a major makeover, the Bond Street address exudes the essence of a well-appointed family home, with reclaimed antique parquet floors and a Portland stone entrance that anchors the store among its Mayfair neighbours. The ground floor boutique is an elegant haven of pared back style, with three salons dedicated to Chopard’s Haute Horologie, Haute Joaillerie and engagement jewellery in a palette of black, white and gold. The first floor VIP buyers lounge is a vibrant melange

of colour, with raspberry-coloured panel walls, floral print screens and bright fabrics on plush sofas and armchairs, and a private bar invites customers to relax while they consider their next purchase or celebrate a momentous acquisition. Built in line with the brand’s ‘Journey to Sustainable Luxury’, Chopard co-president and artistic director Caroline Scheufele worked with architects to source local building materials, design furniture made from FSC-certified wood and use low-energy LED lights throughout. www.chopard.com

LIKE AN EAGLE

TO MARK THE CENTENARY OF THE FIRST NON-STOP transatlantic flight, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars released unseen design sketches of its latest Collection Car, Wraith Eagle VIII. The collection of 50 motor cars tells the tale of the pioneering flight of Captain John Alcock and Lieutenant Arthur Brown. The duo conquered unchartered skies to cross the Atlantic Ocean in a Vickers Vimy aircraft, powered by twin Rolls-Royce Eagle VIII engines, exactly 100 years ago. The sketches, envisioned by the Bespoke Collective of the House of Rolls-Royce, offer a rare and intimate insight into the creative journey undertaken by Rolls-Royce designers as they worked to express an extraordinary act of courage within the palette of a Rolls-Royce. The designs highlight the remarkable attention to detail of RollsRoyce Bespoke craftsmanship. The starlight headliner sketch shows cloud embroidery, the halfway point coordinates and the

flight path of Alcock and Brown. A further detailed sketch shows the night-time view from above, which is expertly incorporated into Wraith’s fascia, in the form of a gold, silver and copper inlay. The sketch of the Collection Car’s clock depicts an iced background effect reminiscent of the freezing instrument panels of the adventurers, while the clock’s green night time glow is illustrated, which is a direct reference to the only light seen by Alcock and Brown as they crossed the Atlantic. A telling truth of how travel has evolved to today. “The unique skill of our Bespoke Design Collective sees the story of one of the most pivotal moments of the 20th century, the first non-stop transatlantic flight, told using Wraith, a motor car which speaks of power, drama and adventure. Wraith Eagle VIII is a modern masterpiece – these sketches offer an extraordinary insight into its creation,” said Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Rolls-Royce CEO. www.rolls-roycemotorcars.com

To mark the occasion, MGallery also popped up a transparent hotel room dubbed the ‘Masterpiece Suite’ for an interactive art installation in one of the most highly trafficked areas in Midtown Manhattan – Penn Plaza. Highlighting the ‘art of the stay’, artist Aaron De La Cruz lived in the pop-up glass hotel room for a full 24 hours while transforming the space into his own visual masterpiece. Available for the rest of 2019, the ‘Paint Your Passport’ package starts from $50,000 for two guests, with personal travel arrangements by the 21c Guest Experience Team. www.21cmuseumhotels.com/offers
