Chef Tom Kerridge plants his flag at Corinthia Another Michelin-level dining destination has arrived in the UK capital as Chef Tom Kerridge sets up shop at Corinthia Hotel London. Kerridge’s Bar & Grill is the first eatery in the Big Smoke for the starred chef, who has designed a menu in tandem with head chef Nick Beardshaw, which harks back to classic British dishes and traditional techniques – fish and chips, anyone? There’s also a rotisserie to add an incredible caramelisation to the roasting process, so brace yourselves for Sunday dinners better than your mother used to make. The restaurant is located in the grand, high-ceilinged restaurant space of almost 400m², with 90 covers in the restaurant and 40 in the adjacent bar. The room features a dark green and burgundy colour palette and is furnished with a mixture of leather-upholstered dining chairs and deep, buttonbacked banquettes. www.kerridgesbarandgrill.co.uk

Star signatures at Villa Kennedy Villa Kennedy was once a swanky family abode, but was extensively restored to house 163 guest rooms and suites, with a capacious 1,000sqm urban spa in the heart of the city. Renamed after John F. Kennedy’s historic 1963 visit, Rocco Forte’s Frankfurt hotel has welcomed the ion of four new Signature Suites designed by Olga Polizzi, the brands director of design. Each suite is named after an iconic figure from the 60s: Jackie O, Audrey Hepburn, Marlene Dietrich and Marilyn Monroe, portraying their individual identities throughout the design that is reminiscent of the Kennedy era – timeless and elegant like Jackie, striking and suave like JFK. Upon entering, each Signature Suite has a foyer leading into well-appointed sitting rooms with wooden floors made of timber from the Bavarian forest. The Signature Suites are available from €2,700 per night with guests entitled to limo transfers, a full in-room bar, in-suite breakfasts, unpacking and packing services and a personalised concierge service. www.roccofortehotels.com

It’s a sweet 17

for The Ballantyne in Charlotte They’ve had a spot of inclement weather over on the US East Coast, but it’s not all bad news. The Ballantyne, a Luxury Collection Hotel has completed an extensive multi-million-dollar renovation in tandem with a 17th-anniversary celebration, with refurbished guest rooms and public spaces. One of North Carolina’s most sophisticated addresses, the hotel’s redesign pays homage to North Carolina’s rich history, with a nod to the neighbourhood of Ballantyne – once family hunting land that has been developed into one of the country’s preeminent communities. “Charlotte is an urban experience infused with historical touches, and the stunning renovation of The Ballantyne, a Luxury Collection Hotel, offers today’s Global Explorers a modern yet authentic portal to the city,” said Anthony Ingham, The Luxury Collection’s global brand leader. “With design elements that pay homage to Charlotte’s heritage and traditions paired with forward thinking touchpoints of innovation, The Ballantyne is now more than ever a true expression of the cherished US destination,” added Ingham. www.theballantynehotel.com

New beginnings in Napa Valley

The doors have been locked for more than five decades, but Francis House has been rescued from demolition and is reborn as a fiveroom luxury inn. The ornate building is an extremely rare example of French Second Empire architecture in California and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, blending a casual and contemporary aesthetic that’s in keeping with other luxury abodes across Napa Valley. Located in the sleepy (ish) resort town of Calistoga, the renovation includes exposed stone walls, modern

furnishings, copious books and art pieces. Modern TVs hang above antique desks, and king and queen beds are covered in premium linens, while Carrara marble covers the surfaces of the spacious bathrooms as well as the fireplace mantle in what is now the living room. In fact, the backdrop once also served as the set for Peyton Place, a 1960s teen soap that first launched Mia Farrow into the spotlight. www.thefrancishouse.com

Marriott merges three loyalty programs There are now more than 110 million members of Marriott Rewards as the loyalty program has merged with The Ritz-Carlton Rewards and Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG). Marriott International acquired Starwood Hotels and Resorts in 2016, with the hospitality giant now boasting a portfolio of 29 brands and more than 6,700 participating hotels in 130 countries and territories. The unification means that members are able to earn and redeem across the entire loyalty portfolio and achieve Elite status faster with newly added Elite tiers. Members now earn on average 20 percent more points per dollar spent and have their Elite status recognised consistently at every hotel as they indulge in the elevated benefits they’ve earned. In addition, the mega hotel brand has added fun redemption experiences for its loyalty members, ranging from an experience of the style and glamour of the Milan Fashion Week, to a braai master class in South Africa to an epicurean journey through mesmerising Jordan, to romantic island getaways. The thrilling experiences are designed to provide members with enriching experiences that make travel more rewarding. To combine the separate accounts into one, members need to visit www.marriott.com/loyalty or www.spg.com.

It seems to be transition season across the pond, as Alabama’s Grand Hotel Golf Resort & Spa finishes a three-year transformation and joins Autograph Collection Hotels, Marriott’s group of 150+ unique properties. First opened in 1847, the Grand Hotel has been known as the Queen of Southern Resorts for generations. The 405-room resort is known for exceptional service, majestic oaks and beautiful sunsets over Mobile Bay. During the three-year renovation, the resort’s guest rooms, meeting space, restaurants, spa, golf, pier, pools and grounds were tastefully updated. “With this stunning transformation nearly complete, the historic Grand Hotel enters its next chapter with its Autograph Collection distinction,” said Tony Davis, president of the RTJ Resort Collection. “We are debuting a modern sanctuary of golf, tennis, beach, pools and spa filled with gracious southern charm and attentiveness. Here, as it has for over 170 years, the Grand Life beckons with hospitality and warmth flowing through the resort in cheerful abundance.” www.autograph-hotels.marriott.com

Historically, organisers would avoid presenting ornamental cars that looked flashy but lacked quality and it was specified that “no car would be presented at the exhibition if it had not accomplished, beforehand and in the presence of an official authority, a ride from Paris to Versailles and back, using its own means.” www.mondial-automobile.com

VIP heathrow

-in the throes of luxurY-

Want to get away from the madding crowds at Heathrow and rub shoulders with celebs, VIPs and royals? We take a peek inside the airport’s luxe lair with Priya Maholtra, Head of Heathrow VIP

The Heathrow VIP website claims you’ll reach your luxurious lounge in 50 steps, is that true? It’s all about efficiency. There’s one tagline that I’ve created in my career is that “Wealth is having time“. And I firmly believe that. I didn’t just make that up because I thought “Oh it looks very nice with the pictures that we are selecting for the advertisements”. It is actually real, it does mean that.

We understand that attendees won’t be seen by other passengers, so how is that possible? You’ll walk down one little corridor of the Windsor Suites at the Heathrow VIP, surrounded by Damien Hirsts and Banksys, to your own private lounge. We orchestrate it and I am the composer, so if someone was on the same flight as you going to JFK, you would have your own private lounge and they would have their own private lounge – it’s not a communal space. I know a lot of VIP services around the world offer lovely services with a communal space so you’re naturally going to see somebody. Here you are assigned a private lounge with a butler to look after you and a butler to look after each and every group.

When it comes to lounges are there different sizes and aesthetics? At the moment, they are not but it is something we are looking at going forward because I’ve been here four years and the business has fundamentally changed and been repositioned over the last four years to be more appropriate for high net worth individuals, with various touch points being added to enhance the experience. And interiors are something that we will be building on going forward. Because even though it’s a short amount of time you’re spending – approximately 90 minutes on a departure maybe, up to an hour on arrival into Heathrow – if a room feels comfortable, you’re more relaxed in there.

It’s interesting that you benchmark off hotels. You must also be benchmarking off other VIP lounge services? We’re really proud to say that we have a complete endto-end experience from London Heathrow for their VIP services and around the world, and that’s what sets us apart. People will say “Yeah, your price point sets you apart from everybody else as well”. Because some of the VIP services are 10 times the amount but then it’s how much do we actually do? We pick you up from your home or hotel, from anywhere in the UK and drive you to the private entrance. So not curb side at Terminal 4 or Terminal 5 – your own private entrance at Heathrow. You’re met with a man in a top hat and tails on and immediately your brain starts thinking you’re in a different space. We screen the bags, we put them on the plane for you, so you haven’t done any of that. You have had your check in happen. You haven’t gone online and tried to find a seat, or had your PA do it for you. We’ll do it for you. When you arrive at the airport, it’s managed for you by somebody.

You’ve also got personal shopper service? How does that work? Is that literally to go and fetch things from the airport? Can be. We work with some of the retailers like that. Some of our clients – some of our American clients – they enjoy actually walking around the terminal because it is a whole lot better than the American airports. So they might say “Actually, I fancy a wander”, so they will go ahead and do that. We’re not taking anything away from your airport experience obviously. Should you want to eat Gordon Ramsay’s Plane Food? Then feel free to. I’m not going to stop you and force our food down your throat. It’s all about client choice. Customization, bespoke service, doing what the customer wants, doing what they feel is best for them in the time frame, how they like it done.

wait expectations: porsche 911 speedster

Porsche will beging piecing together its coveted Porsche 911 Speedster in the first half of 2019 with preciesly 1,948 units of the open-top two-seater scheduled for production. The specific figure is a nod the Porsche 356 “Number 1” that received its operating license on June, 8 back in (you guessed it) 1948. In Paris, Porsche presented this year’s second Speedster Concept study with Guards Red paintwork that referencesthe 1988 911 Speedster of the G-Model generation. The new cross-spoke 21-inch wheels in cross spoke and the black leather interior create a tasteful and sporty appearance. The future 911 Speedster, based on the 991 range, will be the first car to be offered with the new Heritage Design Packages. This exclusive accessory line by Porsche Exclusive allows for an even higher degree of personalization for the 911. In addition to the eye-catching paintwork, 21-inch centre lock wheels are another visual highlight of this latest concept study presented in Paris. Their cross-spoke wheel design is similar to that of Porsche racing

cars such as the 911 RSR and the GT3 R. The tinted day-time running lights were also inspired by racing. Matching the study’s paintwork, they are kept in red. The two “Talbot”-shaped exterior mirrors as well as the fuel tank cap – centrally positioned on the bonnet – shine in blackchrome and platinum. In contrast to the previously shown “Heritage” version, the interior is using partly perforated black leather upgraded with red highlights. The concept cars’ body is based on the 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet. The fenders, as well as the front and rear bonnet are made from lightweight carbon fibre composite while the chassis was taken from the 911 GT3. Furthermore, the GT development department provided the exhaust system with its titanium tailpipes and the drivetrain including the manually operated six-speed gearbox. The same goes for the centrepiece of the limited special edition: The Speedster Concept is powered by a naturally-aspirated flat-six engine developing more than 500 hp and capable of engine speeds up to 9,000 rpm.
