Four Seasons Hotel London at Park Lane’s gourmet picnic hamper
Picnic pleasures in london Al fresco dining can be a treacherous affair in the UK, but when the sun reveals itself, so too do the island’s inhabitants, zealously clambering to bask in the fleeting sunshine. The Four Seasons Hotel London at Park Lane launched its picnic-inspired afternoon tea for two at Amaranto earlier this summer. The split-level terrace of the Italian-inspired dining destination serves as a vantage point to savour a sumptuous hamper and gaze on the changing season of the park-like area. The wicker package is replete with gourmet sandwiches packed in vintage tins, as well as cakes and scones — essential British picnic fodder, all of which can be washed down with a glass of Bollinger Rosé Champagne.
Celebrity chef James Martin also muscled in on the popular pastime with his own picnic service, Picnic2u. The Yorkshireman’s fresh food delivery service includes a luxury hampers section, which sends customisable feasts wherever you wish, be it the park, your office or to your front door. The Luxury Hamper for 6, which will set you back GBP 500 ($820), is packed with lobster, beef fillet, salads, a selection of puddings and two bottles of bubbly. If you decide to plump for your own lunch but still want to dine in style, British carmaker Rolls-Royce offers to install a Picnic Cabinet Set, following an initial request made by a plucky customer. The set, made of wood and leather, contains crockery and cutlery to cater for up to four picnickers.
The quintessential luxe picnic may even be bolstered by the Hermès Kelly Picnic Bag, which is now such a collectible item that resellers are listing it for $20,000 — twice its initial asking price. Add to that the brand-new Luxury Outdoor Picnic Blanket by Freddie and Sebbie, and you’re all set for a rather suave outdoor dining experience. But if the grey clouds of winter roll in to send the picnickers packing, Heathrow Airport has its own on-board picnic offering, whatever the weather. The on-board picnics are available yearround for dining at 30,000 feet, courtesy of all 118 outlets in the airport, including Caviar House & Prunier, Heston Blumenthal’s The Perfectionists’ Café and Gordon Ramsay’s Plane Food.

Known as “the clock of Paolo Uccello”, the great clock of the Florence Duomo was restored by Italian watchmaker Officine Panerai earlier this year. The haute horologist was founded in the city in 1860 and had its own boutique just yards from the Duomo cathedral. The business is now set to expand through a series of new boutique openings around the world, including Bahrain’s Moda Mall. Another UAE branch is already in the works to complement the recent Dubai Mall opening and two Abu Dhabi stores. www.panerai.com
First-class preening in Geneva ManDarin Oriental Geneva has put the finishing touches on its new beauty studio, opened in partnership with L.RAPHAEL. The space is stocked with the Swiss luxury spa brand’s haute couture skin products and treatments to tackle guests’ beauty needs, while they marvel over views of the Rhône. Swedish, deep tissue, anti-jet lag and signature massages are all on the menu, along with firming or anti-aging facials, which can also be enjoyed in the privacy of a room or suite. There’s also the special introductory offer, ‘Secrets of Lake Geneva’, which adds one night’s accommodation in a Premier River View room and a L.RAPHAEL gift. www.mandarinoriental.com
Hôtel Plaza atHénée reopened its doors in August, festooned with bright red geraniums in celebration of its 10-month, EUR 200 million (US $257 million) facelift. The Sultan of Brunei-owned hotel sits on Avenue Montaigne alongside the likes of Louis Vuitton, Prada and Hermès boutiques — a boon for visiting shopaholics. Half the budget was splashed on acquiring three adjoining properties for expansion, and the other EUR 100 million ($41.29 million) was used to revamp the guestrooms, spa, bar and restaurants. The hotel is also home to a new Alain Ducasse eatery, which has opened under the theme of “naturalness” and contains no meat on the menu. www.dorchestercollection.com

A
t this time of year, golden brown leaves fall from the trees that line the northern bank of the Seine and the air is filled with the woody scent of autumnal decay. As summer gives way to winter, shorter evenings turn into chilly nights, but Parisians cling on to the fading season, filling the bistros and cafĂŠs of countless boulevards and cobbled streets with chatter long into the night. This is the Paris of literature and myth, where couples stroll down

narrow alleys and waiters pull corks from midday to midnight. The end of summer means nothing here — Paris is eternal, indefatigable and enduring. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Liberation of Paris, when American troops and the French RÊsistance reclaimed the city to joyous scenes, marking the beginning of a party that lasted for days: a celebration of liberty, fortitude and new beginnings. Seventy years later, the joie de vivre is still palpable in Paris, as the city celebrates many more new beginnings.

CITY ON SHOW
Hallowed halls (below) Palais Galliera is a tribute to the city’s fashion history Haute couture (right) highlights from Les Années 50 — La Mode en France 1947-1957 exhibition
of two years of German occupation, a little-known couturier launched a new collection in an Avenue Montaigne boutique that would change the world of fashion forever. Just four years later, Christian Dior was responsible for almost 50 percent of the French fashion export industry. His designs marked the end of postwar frugality, revealing full-length skirts and generous blouses, all of which required decadent amounts of fabric that only the most affluent ladies could afford. As well as the luxuriant use of fabric, the new style gave birth to an era where the feminine form was celebrated, with clinched waistlines and narrow shoulders above exaggerated basque skirts that created an hourglass effect. Harpers Bazaar editor-in-chief Carmel
Snow coined the style the ‘New Look’ and designers across Paris began to emulate the designs. The exhibition celebrates this vibrant era with almost 100 original vintage outfits on display, covering everything from evening gowns to swimwear and accessories; a veritable treasure trove for acolytes of the big ’50s designers like Dior, Chanel, Balenciaga, Pierre Cardin and Givenchy. There are vintage editions of Elle and Paris Match magazines, and some original sketches from the designers’ notepads, all set within the magnificent backdrop of the Palais, with its original mosaic floors and towering domed ceilings. The exhibition runs until November 2 and will be succeeded by another retrospective starting December 9.

The designers whose wares were flaunted at the launch of the SpringSummer 2015 ready-to-wear collections in Paris last month owe a huge debt to France’s legendary couturiers; the men and women who forged France’s reputation as the home of haute couture. These legendary couturiers are celebrated at Palais Galliera: Musée de la Mode de la Ville de Paris (Paris Fashion Museum), a beautiful 1894 Beaux Arts building where rotating exhibitions examine the history of French high fashion and showcase the masterful work of its top protagonists. This summer saw the launch of one of the most important exhibitions since the museum reopened in September 2013 after a three-year renovation. Les Années 50 — La Mode en France 1947-1957 celebrates the monumental shifts in fashion design in the post-war era. Less than two years after the end of World War II, when much of France was still repairing the physical and mental scars

within an hour’s drive of the city, scattered between the leafy suburbs, up-and-coming inner-city streets and the scenic winelands. “Cape Town is the culinary capital of the country,” says Abigail Donnelly, editor of South Africa’s respected Eat Out restaurant guide. “Diners here are prepared to take more chances, they’re more adventurous, and I think the chefs respond to that. Chefs here are following the international trend of tapping into and supporting small producers, and there’s an incredible amount of storytelling on a plate.” Perhaps the finest example of that, and the first stop for any committed gourmand, should be The Test Kitchen in the gritty but gentrifying suburb of Woodstock, created by chef Luke Dale-Roberts. Despite the restaurant bagging 48th spot on this year’s World’s 50 Best Restaurants List, British-born Dale-Roberts isn’t resting on his laurels. Since the awards “we’ve been spending time concentrating on all aspects of the restaurant,” says Dale-Roberts, who has added new dishes, introduced a Tea Pairing element to the menu, and revamped the décor and bespoke crockery to match his evolving style. The drive to constantly improve, evolve and innovate is typical of the city’s vibrant food scene. Cape Town may have a reputation for being laid-back and slightly somnambulant, and that’s for good reason; there are far better ways to spend your days there than in the office. If you need me, I’ll be out to lunch.
en
Capetonians like myself have a reputation for being a little smug about the corner of Africa we choose to call home. And frankly, who could blame us? As if that gorgeous mountain slap-bang in the middle of the city wasn’t enough, there’s the ocean on three sides, scenic winelands a half-hour drive away, and a downtown so cosmopolitan it makes the proverbial melting pot look elitist. And then, there’s the food. Ask a South African where to find the finest restaurants on the continent and anyone with a modicum of taste will say ‘Cape Town’. While the Michelin guide is yet to reach South African shores, it’s safe to say that the lion’s share of stars would shine on Cape Town. That’s not to say the city is without its hipster hangouts and local favourites. My regular Italian joint turns out a pizza primavera that would make a Napoletano weep for his mama’s home cooking, while on the fringes of the city centre, you’ll find grungy dive bars and ramen counters, underground tapas joints and craft breweries. The food truck movement also rolled into town a year or two back, with the likes of The Grubbery (great burgers), Limoncello (Italian inspired takeaway) and Lotus (Asian street food) setting up in parking lots. If the sun’s out, chances are they’ll be somewhere with a sea view. But it’s in the city’s fine-dining haunts that Cape Town really nails its colours to the culinary mast. All but a handful of the country’s top restaurants are to be found

DEGUSTATION ... PIEDMONT Piedmont’s truffle shuffle The season of the tuber magnatum is upon us. Better known as the white truffle, the coveted fungi started to flourish last month, and will be found in parts of Europe until the New Year. Follow your nose to the 84th International White Truffle Fair of Alba, which kicks off on October 11 in Piedmont, Italy, and runs until November 16. Crippa’s cuisine A visit to Piedmont would be remiss without reserving a table at Enrico Crippa’s Piazza Duomo. Located in the centre of Alba, the Michelin-starred establishment is born of a collaboration with the Ceretto family, a Piedmontese dynasty responsible for much of the region’s wine produce. October and November are the optimum months for a taste of truffle, while tuber magnata explode across the region. In the words of The World’s 50 Best Restaurant organisers, “Crippa offers a truffle menu of legendary decadence”. The Italian master secured 39th place at this year’s awards. Fade to black in Tuscany Alas, as November looms we will wave goodbye to the black summer truffle that has been popping up in Europe since May. So, in order to get your fix, consider Villa La Massa’s Wine & Truffles excursion in Tuscany, from October 6 to 11. Guests of the Florentine hotel can gain access to several private villas and gardens throughout the area, learning about food, art, architecture and stories from the region. The special five-day trip offers truffle hunting, indulgent dining and even a Ferrari ride through the Chianti region.

Another leading Peruvian restaurant, Astrid y Gastón, claimed second place, while São Paulo-based D.O.M came in third. Earlier this year, Central was ranked 15th on The World’s 50 Best Restaurants List. On the road
JAGUAR XE S Jaguar unveiled its latest incarnation at a big reveal in London last month, which saw the new Jaguar XE flown past some of London’s landmarks hanging beneath a helicopter. The company’s excitement pver the launch was understandable – the new XE introduces new design and engineering technology that will be introduced across the portfolio on all future launches. The top of the range XE S features a supercharged 3.0-litre V6 that justifies the car’s agile stance, with a long wheelbase and low seating position giving the saloon an unquestionably sporty edge. The XE is the first Jaguar ever fitted with electronic power assisted steering, which the company says will improve the drive experience without reducing contact with the road. The whole vehicle is built around a mostlyaluminium monocoque design, like it’s cousin, the Jaguar F-Type. Technology geeks will love the InControl Remote system, which allows iOS and Android users to control functions including the climate control system, door locks and ignition system from wherever they are.
