Three or four of these layers make up the soil, the foundations. There are many horizons shaping Marlborough winegrowing and making. The valleys are a unique mix of climate, topography and soils which creates fascinating sub-regions and micro ‘single vineyard’ regions. Marcel Giesen decided to call this diverse terroir home over twenty years ago and has since, contributed greatly to laying the regions’ wine foundations. While continuing to celebrate Sauvignon Blanc versatility in style, depth and complexity, his masterclass will also broaden your perception of Marlborough through tasting some of the finest expressions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Awin Barratt Siegel Wine Agencies (ABS) Masterclass: Great Whites of South Africa MASTERCLASS HOST: Lynne Sherriff MW, Consultant, ABS Wine Agencies MANCHESTER: Mezzanine Bar LONDON: North Annexe TIME: 14.00 - 14.45 The Great White Wine Revolution is a movement that began quietly in South Africa around 15 years ago when a couple of young, passionate and inspired winemakers realised the potential of the diversity of white varietals in the most varied soils and climatic conditions. It was a case of new world meets old world, with blends based on Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. Out of the woodwork came bush vine Grenache Blanc, Marsanne and Rousanne which blended perfectly with small pockets of Viognier. South Africa was mostly known for its single or dual varietal white wines, but in the last 3 to 5 years, Mediterranean blends, Bordeaux blends and weird and wonderful blends have been made which are serious but fun, cheeky but inspired and most pertinently have the ability to age. Oak has been diligently used and experimentation has extended to concrete tanks, amphorae and the highly prized eggs. With no constraints on blending from different areas, terroirs and choice of varietals, winemakers have carte blanche to “marry” the various elements and really put their own unique imprint on their blended white wines. This is a huge plus for South Africa and of course encourages comparison, competition and flair amongst the producers of these wine styles.
