Given the choice to buy one device that can scan, copy and print satisfactorily and save space at the same time, it's easy to understand the popularity of all-in-one devices. We've even seen subway passengers carrying home their all-in-one purchases. Try getting on a subway with a scanner, copier and printer, each in a separate box.
Printer manufacturers expect sales of multifunction devices to remain strong. So Lexmark looks to improve on last year's impressive X85 All-In-One, putting speed, scanner and resolution enhancements in the brand new, topof-the-line X5150. Maximum resolution is 4,800x1,200 dpi, and ink drops can vary from 3 to 10 picolitres. The scanner reduces to 25 per cent and enlarges up to 400 per cent.
If you only want colour copying, you don't even need to attach a computer. The device offers one-touch computerless copying, but to scan things into usable digital form for e-mailing or storing, you'll need a computer and if you want faxing capability, that computer will need a modem.
From the top right panel, you can control pretty much everything to do with copying and starting a scan or fax. There are separate buttons for colour and black copying and for enlarging and reducing. Another button offers three choices for photo scanning. Instructions shown on a 1.3x5 cm LCD screen guide you through each process.
When used with a computer, the software offers short tips, including the importance of selecting the correct paper for the print job. The X5I50 senses paper type automatically, saving you from manually setting it up and avoiding accidents that would happen if you forgot.
Input capacity is 100 sheets; output 50 sheets. With input and output trays fully extended, the X5I 50 measures 51x48x32 cm (DxWxH). The lid lifts up high enough to allow a box or other object to be placed on the 30x22 cm scanner bed.
