Brief
Concept
We were set this brief by DR.ME, we were paired up alphabetically as this is how Eddy and Ryan from DR.ME completed their first collaboration at university. As a result of this I was paired up Natalie Dyson. We were given the task of designing a flag between the 2 of us. The flag needed to be 1m x 1.5m and we were to work by hand to start with, but then had the option of scanning in our components and doing any digital editing we saw necessary.
In order to make the brief more focused we started thinking about the actual concept of collaboration and the importance of it. The first thing we thought of was a checker board as there is essentially 2 opposite components. From here we decided to go down the route of linguistic couples and objects that are always paired up. We decided to work with 2 colours sticking with the pair theme.

We decided to split the flag up into 15 sections, 3 along and 5 down. Once we had decided the format of the flag we started researching linguistic couples and came up with a list which we
liked best and that we could find some relation to. We split the list into too and made our imagery from cutting and ripping bits of coloured card in true DR.ME collage style.

Digital Manipulation

Digital Editing Once we had produced all our card images we scanned in the elements of the flag and then experimented in Photoshop adding the original checkerboard aspect to the design which relates to the pairing of the objects and gives that contrast of couples.
Colour Scheme We changed the hue and contrast until we found a colour scheme that we thought worked best. The imagery used is playful and simple really emphasizing that hand crafted aspect of the design. We wanted it to look rough and ready so we left the images overlapping to create a much more interesting composition.

Printing
Printing
In order to cut costs down we managed to print our flag in college in the printed textile workshop. In order to do this we uploaded out TIFF file onto the big fabric printers and left it to work its magic. We printed our flag on a cotton fabric, this was perfect for the flag as it is lightweight and perfect for hanging. We were able to get the flag cut down to size and hemmed to stop fraying. The flag has been sent off and will be appearing in DR.ME’s flag exhibition in Islington Mill on Friday the 13th of December
This brief has taken me outside my comfort zone which has been exciting. We have produced work that is very different to our usual design style. Because we didn't take the brief too seriously we have created something completely unique and different. I am really looking forward to checking out the exhibition and meeting up with DR.ME again for a catch up. Overall the brief was really enjoyable and has definitely helped with my ability to collaborate and develop ideas as a pair.
