The Poems

Preface

Magical tales in faraway places are all the better when they are true. These scribbles were originally penned during my thirty years of living in Sri Lanka, India, Kuala Lumpur, Sarawak on the island of Borneo, Hong Kong, Morocco, South Africa, and, alas, on the wrong street in Mumbai. The world I saw was of silver and smut. Now after years of travels elsewhere, I revisited the old photographs, the pages of Asian jottings. Are fond reminiscences and fragmentary memories a poem’s roots? Its leaves? Or perhaps its cellulose and lignin? I leave you to decide. As for me, I have brought back to life the world I had forgotten, and that is enough.
