Hi my name is Douglas and I am currently a 3rd year Interior design student at Ryerson School of Interior Design. I am a hard worker that is always willing to learn and improve my work. I enjoy experimenting with different forms within the interior space and challenging what is possible within interior design. This portfolio inlcludes a selection of work that was created with different programs and techniques. Thank you for taking your time to review my portfolio and hope you enjoy!

ANNEX HOTEL 296 Brunswick Ave Toronto, ON M5S 2M7 Winter 2021
2 The annex is a busy part of Toronto with many young people, also it is very close to a major Subway station and an university. The new Annex Hotel will be transformed into a space of work and rest. This place can be a place for people to rest ranging from a couple hours to multiple days. The workspaces are available for people who might need a change of scenery or just simply can’t work at home. The front of the hotel will be a cafe available for people to grab a quick drink or snack while they work here and on the way to work. The first and second floor will be a co-working space for people to work individually or collaborate with each other. This features a hot desk area that people can rent out for a couple hours to team areas that are more long term. The second floor has rooms for people who might want a quieter work space or want to collaborate with their team in a more secluded area. At the end of the hallway there will be resting pods for people who want to rest for shorter durations. The third floor is where the hotel rooms are. These are small rooms that are mainly for rest, so there aren’t many features or luxuries. Each room features 2 beds and the lower bed can be transformed into a small work desk area if needed. With the small amount of space in the rooms the washrooms and showers are separate and shared with everyone.

The Capsule rooms are able to accommodate for a variety of guests. It has 2 states: a double bunk that is perfect for rest while the other is a single bunk with a functional work surface. This is perfect for guests who would like their own private space but still want to get work done.

14 The design approach for this project is based on the narrative around the input and output, highlighting a collaborative space by utilizing the vertical connection between the levels in the building. The stairs that connects the ground floor to the second floor creates the partition wall that divides the showroom and the sample room as the steps converge with eachother. It also doubles as bleachers for collaborative oppurtunities, thus, emphasizing the concept of the design. We see the future of the workplace as a flexible space that people would want to come and work in. Due to COVID-19, people have gotten used to working in whatever space they can. Whether it be their own workstation desk at home or their kitchen island, people have been able to adapt to their workspace. This design concept gives people the flexibility in where they want to work. Private, or public, loud, or quiet environments are available.

Courtyard Laneway 269 Bill Cameron Lane Toronto, ON M6H 2Y9 Winter 2020
24 The Concept of this laneway home is an interior courtyard. Due to regulations in Toronto, this laneway home lot only allows windows in the front and back. adding an interior courtyard allows more natural light to penetrate the home. This home has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, suitable for a family of 3 or 4. The courtyard also creates sightlines throughout the home, making it seem more spacious than it really is. The footprint of the laneway is the maximum of 8m by 10m. We were able to achieve this because the lot was very long, allowing us to not worry about the space between the laneway and the main house.

VIBE Arts HQ 158 Sterling Rd #100 Toronto, ON M6R 2B7 Fall 2021
32 VIBE Arts is a non-profit organization that is mainly an outreach program. This new expansion will not only be a bigger office space but a central hub where they can host programs and events for the community. Their mission is to work collaboratively with partners in under-resourced communities to create a lasting impact on the lives of young people through arts education and programming. The redesign for VIBE Arts HQ focuses on the concept of a multifunctional space that can be transformed to meet their program. The open space can hold multiple events as well as be extended classroom space for their art programs. Special design considerations include Visual/digital arts classroom with lots of storage and pin up space, a Dance/music room with changerooms. The studio will transform between the two depending on the program. Lastly, a kitchen to prep a few meals as youth coming from under-resourced communities may struggle to have 3 meals a day.
