“End of life care needs to be integral to training curricula at all levels and for all staff groups” The Dove House Hospice practice development department is based at Chamberlain Road Hull. We provide education to the whole range of staff involved in the care of people with life‐limiting illness and bereavement. The people who attend our events and study days come from Schools, Hospitals, Care Homes, the Community, Social Services, other Hospices, service users and members of the general public. This education both assists staff to give up to date quality care to patients and families and raises awareness of the issues surrounding specialist palliative care.
"In addition to providing direct care for people with complex problems, hospices and specialist palliative care services provide advice on other patients, for example, to district nurses and GPs. Many hospices also have an important role in providing education and training both for staff who wish to specialise in palliative care and those working in other areas who have significant roles in the provision of end of life care..." End of Life Care Strategy, Chapter 4: Care in different settings, Point 4.42

What is World Hospice and Palliative Care Day? World Hospice and Palliative Care Day is a unified day of action to celebrate and support hospice and palliative care around the world. Voices for Hospices is a mexican wave of concerts taking place on World Hospice and Palliative Care Day every two years. The theme for World Hospice and Palliative Care Day 2014 is “Who Cares? We Do!” which will take place on October 11th 2014. When does World Hospice and Palliative Care Day take place? World Hospice and Palliative Care Day takes place on the second Saturday of October every year and Voices for Hospices takes place on the same date every two years. What are the aims of World Hospice and Palliative Care Day? To share our vision to increase the availability of hospice and palliative care throughout the world by creating opportunities to speak out about the issues To raise awareness and understanding of the needs – medical, social, practical, spiritual – of people living with a life limiting illness and their families To raise funds to support and develop hospice and palliative care services around the world Who organises World Hospice and Palliative Care Day? World Hospice and Palliative Care Day is organised by a committee of the Worldwide Palliative Care Alliance, a network of hospice and palliative care national and regional organisations that support the development of hospice and palliative care worldwide. The Day is facilitated by Help the Hospices, the UK national charity for hospices. What has happened on previous World Hospice and Palliative Care Days? Every year approximately 70 countries take part in the celebrations with activities including public awareness raising campaigns, advocacy with policy makers, fundraising events and public launches.

The day will contain a mixture of direct teaching, participatory exercises and video. Participants are encouraged to bring their questions and every attempt will be made to try and deal with these in the day. Study Day Information The last hundred years have seen a significant growth and development of bereavement theories and models of working. Book shelves sag with their weight and number. But how are these theories when they are applied to social work and health care professional practice? Do they work or are they better on the page? During our time together we will look at the historical development of theories and models of working. Through case studies we will apply the theories to our everyday work and have a lively discussion about their relevance and applicability and how they can be best used to inform our practice
