BEAUTY FROM THE INSIDE OUT There are so many great skin products in the market today, but they are just half the story. The real narrative for healthy, glowing skin starts from within. Beyond the genes you were born with, nutritionists will tell you that naturally beautiful skin relies on your diet and lifestyle choices. To boost radiance and calm inflammation, your body needs to metabolize key vitamins and other nutraceuticals. And, while it’s always a good idea to start with the food you eat, sometimes supplements like these may help: Vitamin A is an effective antioxidant, commonly prescribed for acne because it helps shrink sebaceous glands and reduces oil on the skin. Vitamin C helps protect your cells from the damage caused by free radicals, like UV rays and air pollution. It is celebrated for its ability to boost collagen production, and for its healing and hydrating effects; it is often used to help heal scarring, rosacea and acne. Vitamin D enables the body to efficiently absorb calcium and phosphorus from the small intestine and is crucial for bone health, but studies suggest it might also help prevent skin from prematurely aging. Vitamin E, taken together with vitamin C, can accelerate healing from sunburns. Its powerful antioxidant qualities can neutralize the effect of free radicals and improve skin durability. Magnesium, although naturally produced by your body, may not be enough to ward off the effects of stress. By helping lower cortisol levels, stabilizing hormonal imbalances and improving cellular function, magnesium can improve your skin’s overall appearance and help your body better absorb vitamin C. 8
Omega-3 fatty acids are hailed as top performing, natural anti-inflammatories that can reduce redness and calm the skin – especially good for those with psoriasis. Collagen supplements can help offset the natural effects of aging and boost skin elasticity. Up to 30 percent of the body’s protein is collagen protein. After the age of 30, this amount typically declines by about one to two percent every year. In all cases, if you are considering introducing one of these nutraceuticals to your diet, make sure you check with your doctor. Canada’s nutraceutical market is expected to reach nearly $876 billion by 2024. This growth in demand is increasingly blurring the lines between food and pharmaceuticals, along with raising consumer concerns over food and supplement safety. In response, Canada has some of the most rigorous regulations for the manufacturing process, labelling and packaging.

CANNABIS GIVES YOUR SKIN A NATURAL ‘HIGH’ Cannabidiol, a.k.a. CBD, has lit up the Canadian skincare market, making its way into a growing number of beauty products – and in the process giving cannabis, the plant from which it’s derived, a good name. A report by Zion Market Research suggests that rising awareness of the health benefits of CBD is driving global markets for cannabis-infused beauty products. The market is expected to reach $18 billion by 2026, almost a 20 percent increase from today. Known for its unique versatility, cannabis produces a variety of chemical compounds or “cannabinoids,” many of which have not been detected in any other plant. According to Kannaway, a major manufacturer of cannabis products, researchers estimate that there are 100+ cannabinoids, 200+ terpenoids and 20+ flavonoids found in cannabis. But, one cannabinoid in particular has managed to stand out from the rest in recent years – cannabidiol, or CBD. This is one of the most prominent cannabinoid molecules in cannabis and has become increasingly popular as an ingredient in natural food and beauty products, offering a wide array of potential effects that can be beneficial for the body and mind. Scientists are even looking into the possibility of wider applications of CBD in the near future. Derived from the stalks, stems and flowers of the cannabis sativa plant, CBD is a non-psychoactive compound that has gained in popularity because of its powerful anti-anxiety, anti-inflammatory, anticonvulsant and pain-relieving properties. 16
Beyond these medicinal qualities, CBD products are also skin-friendly. This is mainly due to the similarity between cannabis oil and the natural oil produced by the human skin. The human skin has native receptors for CBD, which allow the extracts to be fully absorbed and more effective. Cannabis oil is a good moisturizer and is excellent for treating dehydrated and dry skin. CBD contains omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins A, B and C, and other nutrients which offer a rich blend of positive effects for the body and overall health, and are safe for consumption, topical application and aromatic treatments. And, CBD has a stronger anti-inflammatory benefit than vitamin C or vitamin E, a bonus for anyone with inflammatory conditions. According to Jenelle Kim, chief formulator at Kannaway, different parts of the cannabis plant produce different benefits. “If you want to be more specific, you can use just the head [i.e. buds and leaves] of this herbal ingredient or the tail [stems and roots]. The tail promotes more circulation and the head is more supplementing for the body. The same goes for the cannabis plant. Hemp seed oil comes from the seeds, and cannabidiol hemp oil is known for mostly coming from the stalk.” Heads or tails, either way CBD is here to stay.

Selon Kannaway, un important fabricant de produits à base de cannabis, les chercheurs estiment qu’il existe plus de 100 cannabinoïdes, plus de 200 terpénoïdes et plus de 20 flavonoïdes dans le cannabis. Parmi ceux-ci, un cannabinoïde a fait sa marque au cours des dernières années : le cannabidiol ou CBD. Les scientifiques étudient même la possibilité de recourir plus largement au CBD dans un proche avenir. Dérivé des pédoncules, des tiges et des fleurs de la plante de cannabis sativa, le CBD est un composé non psychoactif qui a gagné des parts de marché en raison de ses puissants effets anxiolytiques, antiinflammatoires, anticonvulsivants et analgésiques.
Outre ces qualités médicinales, les produits CBD sont aussi hypoallergéniques. amenities to having robes and sandals that fit any size, everything has been designed with a man’s comfort in mind. “We’re even equipped with wider massage tables and chairs, so you no longer need to feel like you’re invading a woman’s space,” says Trottier.
MAN PAMPERING – THE SPA WAY Have you noticed? More men are appearing in advertisements for spas, a clear sign that what was once the domain of the girls’ weekend and the couples’ retreat is changing as men carve out a space of their own. According to Canada’s Tourism Commission, men currently make up about 20 percent of spa-goers in the country. So, what do we know about the male spa-goer? Aharon Trottier, owner of Toronto’s Bodé Spa – which opened 14 years ago as Canada’s first spa exclusively for men – believes his male clients prefer privacy when it comes to personal grooming. That’s why assessments and services are performed in private treatment rooms at his spa. “Most men go their entire lives not knowing how to properly shave or treat their skin,” Trottier explains. “These are men who need a space to call their own in the spa world. We no longer wanted men to awkwardly wedge themselves beside a group of women getting their Saturday afternoon mani-pedis.” Bodé places all employees through an intensive six- to eight-week course and provides ongoing training on how to serve a male clientele. In western Canada, Doug Janczyn, the owner of Manscaping in Victoria, B.C., believes that men are becoming more aware of their health, personal care and grooming. “This awareness, and shift in mindfulness toward overall health and maintenance, skin and grooming is why we feel an overwhelming responsibility to educate both our clients and the community about the subject.” Among his staff, physiotherapist Mike Hundza, an expert in nerve rehabilitation, works with clients that are experiencing hair loss and the challenges of aging. In addition to prescribed homecare routines, Hundza’s approach is combined with skincare advice and treatment plans aimed at compelling the skin to heal, repair and restore, while improving overall health. A recent report by the International SPA Association (ISPA) suggests when men visit a spa, they are interested in fitness and sports services to ease their sore, tense muscles, as well as traditional massage, manicures, pedicures, wraps and facials. The report also shows that men like to purchase products while visiting a spa and don’t have a preference as to the gender of their service provider. ISPA President Lynne McNees explains, “Spas are really having to evolve to accommodate that male spa-goer. Typically, your back of house for males would be smaller because historically it’s been very heavy female. Now they’re having to shift that.” So, if you’re stuck on what to give him for a special occasion, a spa gift certificate just may be the answer.
