he modern spa client understands that there are no quick fixes or shortcuts, but they do appreciate when regular esthetic treatments fit in with their busy work weeks. It’s great to have a whole day of spa relaxation, but sometimes you only have time for a quick mani pedi or a facial in between morning meetings and an afternoon of client phone calls. The same principle applies to medi spa treatments. That’s why when Editorial Director Theresa Rogers and I were invited to try out the new SculpSure laser body sculpting treatment at Toronto’s Q Esthetics Laser Clinic, we jumped at the chance. It was close to our office and the treatment itself took less than half an hour (visit our Instagram page to learn more about our experience!). The appeal of these types of medi spa treatments is clear: there is no surgery or recovery time involved, the spa client can easily fit it into their lunch hour, and the treatment is demonstrably effective. We often bemoan the fact that our society has become so fast paced and frenetic, but perhaps spa businesses can seize this as an opportunity to Hermione Wilson develop a schedule friendly treatment menu for assistant Editor clients on the go.

his year, the Spa Industry Association of Canada (SIAC) is celebrating its 20th anniversary. The association started as the result of a small group of destination spas that saw a need for a professional association to promote the industry within Canada and globally. And, over the years, our mandate has grown to include education and knowledge sharing, standards and best practices, and networking through conferences and events. We participate in a powerful global network. We identify foremost spa practices, and promote the highest of industry standards in order to attract Canada’s best spas, product, service, and educational organizations to our association. I’m pleased to let you know that we are on the cusp of some exciting changes that the Board believes will reinvigorate our community of professionals and further enhance the spa experience for consumers. International recognition The Relais & Chateaux association in France, known for delivering exceptional quality and memorable experiences to its customers, recently requested permission to highlight SIAC members who have been recognized as Leading Spas on a digital platform it is preparing to launch in 64 countries. leadership and Marketing The Board of Directors is in the process of recruiting an Executive Director for the association, along with a marketing and communications partner firm to ensure that we are fulfilling our mission and delivering value to all of our members. planning and programming The first priority for the Executive Director will be to work with the Board and our new marketing and communications partner to develop a strategic plan for the association. To do this, we will be relying on the insight and information you provided in the member survey conducted earlier this year. Thank you so much to everyone who participated. Your input will be instrumental in our planning and decision making. Here are some of the highlights of the results: • Of the 154 respondents, 50% were SIAC members • The greatest number of responses were received from day spas, resorts/hotels, distributors and medical spas

The top three reasons respondents join SIAC or other spa association are: 1. Networking 2. Knowledge Resources 3. Opportunities to Advertise The top five areas that present business challenges for respondents are: 1. Finding Qualified Staff 2. Educating and Training Staff 3. Marketing and Promotions 4. Human Resources 5. Retail Merchandising • 84% of respondents indicated that it would be beneficial to affiliate SIAC with another association • 79% felt that being part of a professional association positively affects their business • 90% indicated interest in attending an international association event • Respondents also indicated that networking, seminars and industry exposure were very important This is not the only time we’ll be reaching out. We are committed to keeping you updated and engaging you in the discussion. And, to get things started, we’re planning a national event next year to reconnect and celebrate this 20-year milestone with all of you. In the meantime, I want to thank you all for your ongoing passion and commitment to our industry. We are proud to represent such a dynamic and vital contributor to the Canadian economy, and we are excited about celebrating a milestone with you next year. Please stay tuned for more information.

CIDESCO Says Yes To Wellness

Spa and Wellness Trend Report from Raison d’Etre

CIDESCO celebrated Global Wellness Day this year by encouraging its international audience of over 50,000 to share a wellness “Thought of the Day” across all social media platforms. On June 10, social media users employed the hashtags #GWDwithCIDESCO and #GlobalWellnessDay to share their thoughts. Those thoughts will later be curated and published in the next issue of CIDESCO’s LINK Magazine. CIDESCO also encouraged its followers to commit to the seven-step wellness manifesto: 1. Walk for an hour 2. Drink more water 3. Don’t use plastic bottles 4. Eat healthy food 5. Do a good deed 6. Have a family dinner with your loved ones 7. Sleep at 10 pm. “It’s fantastic to see that year on year Global Wellness Day is reaching a larger audience and that more and more of our schools, students and graduates are practising the tips not just for the day but in their daily lives,” says CIDESCO President Anna-Cari Gund. “Wellness is incredibly important to us and something that we hope all CIDESCO members prioritise in their lives to ensure a happy and fulfilling work-life balance.”

Raison d’Etre, a global spa consultancy and wellness think tank, has launched their mid-year trends report for spa, hotel and lifestyle operators. The team identified seven trends from #Hashtag treatments to Nutritarianism that will begin to grow in popularity in the latter half of 2017 and beyond. 1. The Power of Brains – an increase in demand for mental wellness, brain workouts and stimulating activities within spas and health clubs 2. Nutritarianism – Creating personalized nutrition plans with a focus on gut bacteria issues, nootropics and dietary requirements or preferences 3. Optimized Living – working with material, light, air and sound to improve sleep quality 4. Kids Wellness – a response to lots of reports and media attention on wellness among children at home, in school and during travel and vacations, contributing to their development 5. Accessible & Affordable Wellness – creating more varied packages that help to make aspects of spa more accessible with more flexibility with mixing and matching package offerings 6. Hashtag Treatments – maximising as much as possible with social media obsessions and trends and also working closely with influential individuals and celebrities 7. The Contrasts – A focus on connectivity, information overdose and silent retreats, the contrasts in our daily lives in terms of exercise, temperature and food, and incorporating trend-lead diets such as the 5:2 To learn more, visit the Raison d’Etre blog at raisondetreblog.com.

Skin and Eye Specialists Team Up To Promote UV Protection The Canadian Dermatology Association (CDA) and the Canadian Ophthalmological Society (COS) have partnered to develop a standard for UV protection of nonprescription sunglasses. The standard verifies the level of UV protection offered by sunglasses. Until now, makers of eyewear have displayed a tiny oval sticker at the corner of lenses that make claims such as “100% UV protection” without there being an independent third-party program to verify that claim. The Eye Sun Protection Program creates just that. The program is voluntary and allows manufacturers to license the logo and submit their product, along with evidence, for review by a panel of dermatologists and ophthalmologists to assess if their product in fact offers the UV protection claimed. “When people think of sun protection, the first – and often only – thing that comes to mind is their skin. But many Canadians aren’t aware that the eyes are also vulnerable to UV damage,” says Dr. Mariusz Sapijaszko, CDA President. In addition to protecting the eyes, protective eyewear also shields the delicate skin around the eye. Brief excessive exposure to UV light, like taking in a baseball game or a day at the beach without adequate eye protection, can produce a burn on the eye’s surface – much like sunburn affects skin.

Naturalistic Amenities Guests are encouraged to arrive hours before their treatment and begin their healing experience from the moment they enter the relaxation lounge. Inspired by nature, The Spa at Nita Lake Lodge incorporates the four elements of water, air, fire, and earth as a central theme. An ocean painting consisting of distinct blue tones is hung above a vast signature wooden piece in the relaxation lounge. These elements embrace the room with the serenity of nature. Guests often change into plush robes and sandals to read a book in the lounge chairs, which are placed next to windows that look out onto a mountainous view. Filled with local artwork, the lounge is decorated with wooden furniture covered with soft plush throws and faux fur pillows that give the room an elegant and comfortable feel. Guests are also invited to use the rooftop hot tubs and eucalyptus steam rooms before or after their treatment. The rooftop hot tub is open year-round and is popular with the guests. “People love it when it’s sunny and also when it’s snowing; it’s just beautiful,” says Spa Manager Hannah Edwards. In the summer, guests can enjoy the lush landscape while the sun shines on their skin. In the winter, they can take in the breathtaking views of the snow-capped mountains while being submerged in the hot tub. After relaxing in the hot tub, guests are invited back to the spa for their treatment. The team at Nita Lake Lodge is devoted to facilitating each guest’s healing experience. The goal is for guests to leave the spa with professional advice for self-care, skin care and a treatment plan that will impact their life. Each treatment table is warmed and covered with cozy duvets and all treatments use holistic and all natural product lines. Guests also have the opportunity to customize their experience by selecting the style of music they would like to listen to.

spa light Canada 150 Treatments As 2017 is Canada’s 150th anniversary, Nita Lake has dedicated treatments to celebrate the occasion. The spa offers four treatments in the collection, the first being the Maple Sugar Body Scrub. It uses maple and brown sugar, which are raw and organic, as well as maple extract, honey, avocado, and grapeseed oil to help with circulation and skin hydration. Another treatment in the Canada 150 collection is the Alpine Arnica Massage. “It focuses on circulation and relaxation and it uses alpine arnica oil which is a really deep penetrative oil to soothe and restore muscles,” Edwards says. In keeping with the active environment at the lodge, the Pacific Pine Deep Tissue Massage focuses on deep pressure and stretching to ease sore muscles. “It uses the deep forest body oil which has a lovely smell,” Edwards says. The Mountain Mint Revitalizing Pedicure rounds out the Canada 150 collection. It combines a peppermint soap and massage balm to ease tension from the feet. “This one is really invigorating, uplifting, but also healing at the same time,” Edwards says. Ila Signature Treatments A signature treatment at The Spa at Nita Lake Lodge is the ila Kundalini massage, which uses U.K. organic product line ila. By combining aromatherapy and sound healing, this treatment activates the kundalini, which is the dormant energy at the base of the spine. “It realigns the body’s rhythm and provides a profoundly restorative effect on the nervous and lymphatic systems,” Edwards says. She describes how warmed poultices filled with Himalayan salt, Calendula flowers, and lavender are placed on to the chakras of the body while soothing music plays in the background. “When the salt is warmed, it emits beneficial negatives ions to counteract the constant influx of toxic positive ions we receive on a daily basis from all the electronic equipment in our lives,” Edwards says. The Kundalini massage is gentle and nurturing, which is ideal for guests who are looking for rejuvenation. Every few years, the spa closes for a week to bring a trainer from ila to teach practitioners about ancient massage techniques used by various groups in Morocco, India, Brazil, and Pakistan for the spa’s signature treatments. “The trainers teach us to heal deep energy blocks caused by stress, or past traumas stored in our bodies,” Edwards says. All ingredients used in the ila treatments are chosen for their high levels of energy to provide a unique experience for guests. If guests are looking for a treatment to share with a loved one, the ila Couples Connect spa package involves a body scrub, the ila Kundalini massage, the ilaTM Ananda facial, and the Shirodhara treatment. Individualization for Guests The spa aims to provide its guests with an individualized experience. People often travel to the lodge for celebrations such as engagements, weddings, or parties and the spa team focuses on making each moment special. Additionally, it is the spa’s fourth year of bringing its wellness services to its partners at Ironman Canada and Gran Fondo, two popular cycling events in Whistler. The RMTs offer massages to all athletes in the Ironman village before the race, on race day, and also invites them into the spa after the race. In Spanish, Nita means “God’s gift of grace” which is a perfect representation of the spa’s graceful approach to help guests find balance in life. 12 S pa Inc. | Summ e r 2 017

Ready for

Medi?

Will your business benefit from medi spa treatments like laser and CoolSculpting? Here’s what you need to ask yourself

By Vivienne O’Keeffe

Will existing (and potential) clients accept medi spa treatments from your facility as readily as from an established medi spa business?

M

any spas have already added medical spa treatments to their existing list of services. The two most prominent ones – laser treatments and CoolSculpting – require not only a significant capital outlay, but also staff and training to run them. The first step in figuring out if they’re right for you is to look at your clients’ current and evolving needs. Will existing (and potential) clients accept medi spa treatments from your facility as readily as from an established medi spa business? Is there room for your new offerings? Can you excel at these treatments enough to lead the market? Good equipment is expensive to buy new and maintain (anywhere from about $70,000-$150,000). How about leasing? How many machines will you need? Are there consumables required, and what are their costs? What about physical changes to accommodate them – maybe new lighting and ventilation? How much will you need to spend on promotion? Put everything on a spreadsheet to see if the numbers work.

Are you prepared to train new staff?

Every medi spa treatment needs trained, certified and experienced staff. Do you have people qualified for laser or non-invasive treatments? Are they familiar with the anatomy and physiology of the skin? Can they identify skin types and do they have a sound understanding of the technology? Some spas are actually providing laser treatments after just one day of training. Clear communication by a trained and experienced technician before and after a treatment lets clients know what to expect – keeping in mind that each person will react differently. Will your technician have the confidence and experience to refuse a treatment if necessary?

14 S pa Inc. | Sum m e r 2 017

spa business for spa clients You’ll also need to allow time for delivery and set-up of equipment and training to deliver treatments without complications. And if you are planning to move staff away from their existing areas of expertise to perform the new treatments, how will this affect the quality of your service delivery and your revenue? Maintaining your high standards means keeping all your services top-notch. Understanding and adhering to contraindications and post care, such as sun or tanning bed exposure, is compulsory. You will need to record your consultations and correctly document each treatment.

Putting a spotlight on laser treatments

What are the risks?

Be wary of offshore companies advertising inexpensive IPL, laser and other knockoff machines. There may be customs requirements and fees involved, not to mention exchange rates and CSA certification fees. Getting imported equipment approved for use in Canada could cost more overall including insurance and certification. In fact, it may end up not being approved due to the classification it may fall into. CoolSculpting treatments can be done by technicians – with licensed MDs standing by when their opinions are needed – about three in 10 times, according to one clinic source. Regulations can change overnight, so before you spend a nickel, check out the latest laws. And ask your insurer what your increased liability policy will cost (due to your increased exposure to risk).

Do one thing well

After all your research, you may decide that adding a medi spa treatment will not enhance your business at all – and that’s fine. Far better to grow steadily and surely than to expand erratically without a strategy. That said, keep in mind that specialization is a big trend today. If you can’t be a market leader with a new service, maybe you can be with one of your existing services. Being clear on your long-term strategy will make these important questions easier to answer.

Vivienne O’Keeffe, AAD, PEA, CIBTAC, is President of Spa Profits Consulting Inc., and an expert in designing successful spa concepts. She is also an international consultant in developing product lines, treatment plans and training programs, a member of ISPA and Spa Industry Association of Canada (for which she won an Outstanding Achievement Award in 2012), and a member of International Management Consultants Inc.

Like dandelions in the spring, lasers have been busting out all over – in salons, spas and other facilities across the country. Issues that arise with these treatments are largely preventable with adequate training, but the training many laser companies provide is woefully sparse. Most complications arise from inaccurate skin typing, choosing the wrong laser, treating inappropriate skin, not screening for contraindications, and equipment malfunction. Improperly performed laser hair removal can cause burns, permanent scarring and hyperor hypopigmentation. Lasers mistakenly used to treat suspicious skin lesions can leave harmful medical conditions including skin cancer undiagnosed. In many cases, laser treatments can work well. Keep in mind, though, that the technology has been around for awhile and could easily be overshadowed by more recent innovations. It's best that you proceed with caution.

Everybody Wins How spa software and revenue management can improve your bottom line

16 S p a Inc. | Summ e r 2 017

By Frank Pitsikalis

T

he time has come for spa operators to embrace the significant opportunity to improve the financial performance of their operations. Without fundamentally changing the services or products they sell, they can make small but significant changes to when they offer those services in order to produce incredible improvements in their top and bottom line. This is the fundamental premise behind revenue management, without which airlines, hotels and car rental companies would not even fathom operating their businesses. In fact, without revenue management, these businesses would likely not survive. Any business that has variable periods of high (and low) demand, takes reservations in advance, and has perishable inventory and low variable costs, is a strong candidate to employ revenue management techniques. I believe many spas dismiss the possibility of revenue management because they believe that they would have to change the price of the service (dynamic pricing) and feel that this may be “gouging the guest. That it would be quite un-spa-like. I promote a different type of revenue management technique – changing the mix of services available based on periods of high, medium and low demand (dynamic availability). Other service industries that have employed revenue management have in fact experienced higher guest satisfaction over time. They have

spa business “trained” their clients that if they want to take advantage of a lower pricing tier for the same product or service, they can book far enough in advance or book during lower demand periods. If the client books at the last-minute or wants a high-demand day or time, they expect that they will pay a premium or that the lower pricing tier will not be available. If we take the airline industry as an example, it has enabled an extremely wide range of consumers to take advantage of air travel today by employing revenue management techniques. Back when fixed, regulated rates were in place in the 1970s, a very small proportion of the overall population had ever experienced air travel. Wouldn’t it be wonderful for the spa industry to expand its reach far beyond the segment of the population that can afford regular spa services? Let’s look at some practical examples of how this can be accomplished in a spa operation. By using spa software to create dynamic availability by simply turning off certain types of services during times you or your spa software system has forecasted that you will experience high demand, you can immediately improve financial results. Using your spa software’s dashboard and occupancy reports, you may determine that your Saturday afternoons from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. are the busiest times of the week. For example, you can decide not to offer longer versions of services, like a 90-minute massage, so that you can actually serve more guests in the spa, creating more retail sales opportunities and likely earning more profit per minute on a shorter service (30 or 60-minute massage). You may also choose not to offer lower margin services (i.e. simple manicures) and opt for services that tend to yield more profit (i.e. facial) and also tend to drag along more retail sales. These are also treatments that could potentially utilize the same spa therapists and treatment rooms, but one can deliver a much higher contribution to the bottom line than the others. For example, the same therapist may now be doing a $220 service instead of an unavailable $120 service, delivering a direct $100 additional profit to the bottom line, since the variable cost of the staff, product and toweling etc. is exactly the same. Some software systems even allow you to set these rules to kick in once the spa schedule reaches a certain forecasted occupancy. You could therefore set your yield management rules to turn on once your spa reaches 80 per cent occupancy on Sunday afternoons from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., for example. By dynamically changing and shaping the mix of services booked, based on demand, the impact to revenue and profits can be quite profound. Another technique that hotels and airlines have started employing, once they already have a reservation, is a last-minute upgrade. If they have a higher class of seat or room now available (i.e. unfilled), they try to upsell the consumer with an attractive offer to drive even higher revenue. Spas can use similar techniques by having instant upgrades available right in the treatment room. They can have aromatherapy add-ons or hot stones on hand to upgrade a regular massage to a hot stone massage for $25 more. Even if they

spa business incentivized their staff with 50 per cent commission on any addons portion only, the additional revenue would drop right to the bottom line since the margin was already set as soon as the guest entered the treatment room. Break out a spreadsheet and do the math. Make a table of your current, typical service mix with the number of services, revenue, margin and related product revenue by hour and service type. Now change the mix by removing some services that don’t drive optimal results (lower margin, longer services, less product revenue drag, etc.) and increasing others that drive optimal results. I believe you may be shocked by how much profit you are leaving on the (spa) table.

one are the days when liposuction and plastic surgery were the only options for consumers looking to get rid of unwanted fat. These days, a client can pop into the spa for a quick non-invasive body sculpting treatment on their lunch hour and go right back to work, with no downtime required. There are a number of treatments that claim to have a fatreducing effect, treatments that use ultrasound, radio frequency and lasers. The focus of this article is exclusively on laser-based, non-invasive body sculpting treatments. Some like it hot In 2007, Cynosure developed a minimally invasive surgical procedure that offered an alternative to traditional liposuction. Called Smart Lipo, the treatment involved making a small incision into the belly of the patient and using a laser to melt away unwanted fat from the inside. Years later, Cynosure observed that there was a growing demand for non-invasive treatments that would have a similar effect to the Smart Lipo procedure. SculpSure was developed to meet that demand. Recently approved by Health Canada for medical use, SculpSure has been gaining traction at the medi spa. Lasers are attached to applicators on the skin and heat the subcutaneous layer of fat to a temperature of 42 to 47 C, breaking down the fat cells. “It takes about a minimum six weeks for those fat cells to be processed through your lymphatic system and to be flushed out, and then it takes about 12 weeks for you to see optimum results,” says Mac Osman of Cynosure. The treatment lasts for 25 minutes and involves intervals of heating and cooling so that the client doesn’t feel sustained discomfort. “It is an uncomfortable treatment, but it’s tolerable,” Osman says. “It beats going to the gym five days a week and running on the treadmill for an hour and feeling that burn. Everybody’s [pain] threshold is different though.” Some like it cold CoolSculpting by Zeltiq is a popular laser body sculpting treatment that uses a method called cryolipolysis, which involves destroying fat cells by freezing them. to the body and provide localized suction on the belly, hips, bra line, inner thighs, and outer thighs, pulling unwanted fat into the chamber. It then cools the fat cells to a temperature of 5 C for 45 minutes to one hour. The best non-invasive laser body sculpting programs integrate more than one of these treatments, says Dr. Stephen Mulholland of Toronto’s SpaMedica. At SpaMedica, spa clients can get both the CoolSculpting and SculpSure treatments, six weeks apart, and start to see results 12 weeks after the two treatments, he says. According to Mulholland, whose medi spa also offers the BodyFX radio-frequency treatment and the Ultrashape ultrasound treatment, BodyFX and Ultrashape require more treatments but yield results in less time. Not too cold, not too hot “Ours is a cold laser,” says James Bryer, an independent provider of Zerona Canada. “What that means is it just doesn’t generate any heat,” he says. Unlike the SculpSure and CoolSculpting treatments, the goal of the Zerona laser treatment isn’t to destroy the fat cells, but merely deflate them. “We’re not killing cells at all, we’re actually just reducing them inside, and the way we’re doing that is we’re giving them an instruction that the body needs all the energy stored up inside the fat cells,” Bryer says. “Once that instruction is given, the fat cells release all their content – not just a little bit, but all of it – and the cells collapse. The contents from the fat cells – the triglycerides, the fatty acids, things like that – they all get caught in your lymphatic system and we flush them out using a lot of water.” Fat cells are an important part of the endocrine system, which is an important part of the immune system, Bryer says. The Zerona treatment, he says, aims to make the fat cells “small and young again.” After the treatment, it takes the fat cells about 48 hours to repair themselves, and then they fill back up again. However, Bryer says, because the membrane has been empty for a couple of days, the fat cell does not fill up to full size. After each successive treatment, the capacity of the fat cells becomes less and less. “We actually guarantee a five per cent reduction at the waist, hips and thighs in two weeks,” he says.

To laser or not to laser Not only are these treatments a great option for clients who want a slimming result without going under the knife, laser non-invasive body sculpting treatments are ideal for medi spas looking for an alternative to add to the treatment menu. Before adding these treatments, however, Dr. Melissa Hershberg of Q Esthetics Laser Clinic recommends that spas make sure they have enough clientele to make enough use out of the laser devices. “The treatments are expensive,” Hershberg says. “[Spas] need to make sure they understand their limitations. It’s not the same as liposuction; you’re not going to get huge fat volume reductions, but it’s more for people who have already used diet and exercise and are on their way to losing but have a few stubborn pockets of fat. For that, you can achieve really good results. I don’t want to make any overreaching promises.”

F O R S PA C L I E N T S Before you go into the medi spa for a non-invasive laser body sculpting treatment (wow, that’s a mouthful), make sure to come well hydrated. “Drinking water is really important,” Dr. Melissa Hershberg of Q Esthetics Laser Clinic says. “That will help your lymphatic system flush out any fat cells destroyed as well. It’s also important to continue with your diet and exercise regime. These treatments are not a cure all, but they can be an effective accompaniment to a weight loss program. Some of these treatments may cause discomfort, so Hershberg suggests that you take a pain reliever like Advil or Tylenol before the procedure. That being said, every treatment is different and has slightly different aftercare procedures. Check with your individual provider or spa for more details.

Medi Spa Trends

By Hermione WiLson

F

or those who crave esthetic improvement, there are several options: a change in diet, regular gym membership, or the more drastic option of plastic surgery. But for those who are hesitant to go under the knife, non-invasive medical spa treatments may be the next best choice. “Women are looking for a total rejuvenation package for their bodies, not just their face,” says Maggie Guo, Director of Operations at Redwood Medi Spa in Toronto. Guo says that’s why her medi spa offers treatments like BodyFX. Redwood Medi Spa’s BodyFX treatment uses radio frequency to break down large fat cells, targeting areas that workouts cannot reach. “You still have to maintain a healthy diet and exercise, of course, but you use the BodyFX to assist you with trouble areas.” At Montreal’s Victoria Park Medi Spa, cool sculpting is a non-surgical body treatment that has gained a lot of popularity, says Sacha Bourdage, Director of Laser Aesthetics. “We’re basically freezing fat, so small bulges of fat in unwanted areas like the abdomen, love handles, inner thighs, and also under the chin,” she says. “We’re very, very busy with that.” Bourdage says Victoria Park also offers dual sculpting, which means using more than one machine to cover more areas of the body in less time. It’s not just about dealing with problem areas, however, Bourdage says. A new emerging trend in medi spa is something she calls prejuvenation. “You’re looking at clientele who [is not waiting] until damage on the skin becomes substantial and then having to deal with it and let it affect their confidence,” Bourdage says. “Our clients love to target the accumulated effects of the sun damage or if they’ve had acne scarring, they’re going about it earlier.” Some of the popular preventative treatments Victoria Park Medi Spa offers are broadband 22 S p a Inc. | Sum m e r 2 017

light (BBL), which Bourdage says is a more advanced version of intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment, and fractional laser treatment. At Redwood Medi Spa, Guo says the most popular treatment is Lumecca, which uses IPL to treat pigmented and vascular lesions. These treatments are also being used to deal with the cumulative effects of sun damage, especially by clients who grew up in an era when the use of sunscreen was not common and the effects of sun damage on the skin were not well understood. The modern medi spa client is not satisfied with merely a wrinkle-free face, Guo says, but also wants to improve the quality of their skin and address the three Ts: tone, texture and tightness. For this, Redwood Medi Spa offers treatments like Fractora, a skin resurfacing treatment that involves controlled wound healing. “We purposely cause a wound to the skin and then the skin will heal, and during this healing process the skin will produce collagen,” Guo says. Fractora is paired with an oxygen treatment to speed up the healing process. Looking to the future, both Guo and Bourdage see feminine rejuvenation, also known as vaginal rejuvenation, becoming as big in Canada as it is in the U.S. It’s not just an esthetic treatment, Bourdage says, but can also be a solution to incontinence for women who are post-pregnancy or post-menopausal. Another treatment that has crossed the border is tattoo removal, Bourdage adds. Victoria Park offers a Pica Way tattoo removal method that uses three wavelengths to hit the whole colour spectrum and works faster than traditional methods. “We feel we were ahead of the trend and that it’s slowly starting to build,” she says. 1. derMAroller eDermaStamp www.dermaspark.com

To Your Masks… Ready… Set… Go! B y I s a b e ll e V i ll e n e u v e Long considered superfluous, masks are making a remarkable comeback to store shelves. They are appreciated for their many benefits – they smooth out the contour of the eyes, soften facial features, restore radiance to dull complexions, brighten tiredlooking faces, rehydrate the skin in a matter of minutes – but also for the few moments of relaxation they provide. And beauty professionals agree that women who use facial masks on a regular basis have a better quality of skin. HOW MASKS WORK A mask is generally defined as a cosmetic preparation of varied consistency intended to be applied to the skin in a relatively thick layer which is left on the skin for several minutes before being removed. It differs from other skin care products in that it is concentrated in active ingredients but also, and perhaps more importantly, because it creates a temporary occlusive effect. Indeed, just like plastic food wrap, masks form an impermeable film on the surface of the skin. This “sealed-in” effect isolates the skin from the external environment, increases surface hydration – by limiting transepidermal water loss – and improves the level of penetration of the mask’s active ingredients. It’s as if the skin is being immersed in a bath of active ingredients. And the longer the occlusive barrier is maintained, the more the ingredients take effect. Unlike a cream, a mask’s contact time with the skin is shorter. But thanks to the occlusive effect and greater concentration of active ingredients, masks have a more intense effect, therefore leading to immediate results. Masks reinforce the properties of other daily skin care products, especially if they contain similar ingredients. Furthermore, products applied after the use of a mask are better absorbed by the skin. A cornerstone of any “in clinic” skin care service or an essential element of any at home beauty routine, a facial mask can also be an invaluable tool after a sleepless night or a period of fatigue. So, how can you get the best out of a facial mask?

Cream masks

Generally intended for dehydrated, dry or sensitive skin, and mature or fatigued skin, the velvety texture of cream masks allows them to be quickly absorbed. They help moisturize the outer layers of the epidermis, repair the skin’s barrier, and alleviate discomfort. They leave the skin feeling soft and supple, they smooth out fine lines and relax the features. Along with patch masks, cream masks tend to be the most potent in terms of treatment.

Purifying masks

Designed specifically for mixed or oily skin, they remove 24 S p a Inc. | Summ e r 2 017

impurities and absorb excess sebum. They leave the skin clean, fresh and radiant. They unclog pores and refine the skin’s texture. This type of mask is also ideal for dull skin, for smokers, and for so-called asphyxiated skin. The most popular purifying masks are charcoal or clay-based.

Exfoliating masks

The most common key ingredients in exfoliating masks range from abrasive particles to keratolytic enzymes or alpha-hydroxy acids. Keratolytic enzyme and alpha-hydroxy acid masks are the preferred options for sensitive skin, as these minimize or even eliminate any mechanical action that may be damaging for this type of skin. For other skin types, the optimal effect is obtained with masks that combine mechanical action with enzymatic/ chemical action.

Radiance masks

Intended for all skin types – except acne-prone skin because they tend to be too rich – radiance masks act like a magic wand that erase the signs of fatigue and quickly restores skin’s beauty before a special occasion or simply after an insufficient or difficult night’s sleep. A tightening effect, a radiant complexion and longerlasting makeup are guaranteed. Available in either a cream or a cream gel, they are applied as often as necessary, in a thick layer, and left on for 10 minutes before the excess is removed with tissue paper… they must never be rinsed off! Radiance masks are an effective substitute for day creams.

Gel masks

Ideal for instantly replenishing the skin, gel masks help smooth facial features and quickly restore the moisture reserves of the outer layers of the epidermis. Truly leading-edge, gel masks are particularly beneficial for the eye contour area: thanks to their oil-free texture and high water content, they help smooth out dehydrated skin around the eyes and they effectively reduce puffiness. They can be safely applied as often as desired on the eyelids and even very close to the edge of the lashes. In order to intensify their effects, store them in the refrigerator, in the vegetable crisper. The delightful, fresh feeling experienced when applying the cooled mask promotes the decongestion of the skin.

Patch masks

Appearing on the market just a few years ago, patches are intended for the treatment of dehydrated, dry, tired or mature skin. Inspired by the medical world, patches allow for an intense and localized application of active ingredients. Designed to be used on the face or around the eyes, their purpose is to moisturize or act as an antiaging treatment. They are offered in the form of pre-soaked fabric

in the know patches which, once applied to the face, quickly saturate the skin with active ingredients. Patch masks are particularly valued because they are practical and easy to use; they don’t drip, don’t require rinsing and can be applied without getting any in the hair. It is recommended to prioritize fragrancefree formulas, especially for patches intended for the eye contour area.

Multimasking

Multimasking consists of applying several masks to the face, each selected according the needs of the area in question. It is a made-to-measure technique, a way to customize the mask, to treat the skin area by area for a very tailored treatment. The treatment begins with the identification of the different skin problems, then follows with the application of a mask adapted to each area/problem. For example, a purifying mask can be applied to the T-zone or areas of the skin prone to imperfections, an antiaging gel patch can be applied to the contour of the eyes, and a firming mask can be applied on the cheeks, forehead and oval of the face.

A few helpful TIpS for SpA ClIeNTS • Generally, facial masks are used once a week. radiance masks and eye contour masks can be applied as often as necessary. • Always remove make-up and clean the skin first. • For an optimal penetration of the active ingredients, exfoliation is recommended beforehand. • Taking a hot bath while masking not only transforms this time into a relaxing break but also improves the skin’s absorption of the mask thanks to the warm vapours. • Cream masks and patch masks should not be rinsed off, but instead, in order to benefit from their full effect, the excess should be carefully rubbed into the skin using light strokes until complete penetration is seen. • Other types of masks should be rinsed off gently, first with warm and then with cool water, using cotton balls or a washcloth soaked in warm water… or even better, in floral water. then, the skin should be carefully dabbed dry with tissue paper. • Ideally, clay masks should not be allowed to dry on the skin. in order to ensure this, damp compresses can be applied to the surface. Clay is very absorbent and can dehydrate the skin. if necessary, rehydrate the mask before removing it.

spa star common yoga posture would be tree posture. In a football game you would never see an athlete stop and do the tree posture, but what you might see is them balancing on one leg with their knee bent and their arms out reaching for the ball with their back leg somewhere in space. What we do in Joga is emulate those athletic movements. It’s more of a movement-based style that’s focuses more on the biomechanics and what the athlete needs to achieve in terms of performance and injury prevention.

Jana Webb

J

ana Webb came up with the name of her successful fitness practice more than seven years ago while she was working with CFL player, Henry Burris. “I owned a yoga studio at the time in Calgary,” she says. “He said, ‘You need to brand this. You have to call it something.’” Their brainstorming session resulted in Joga – “Because of my name Jana and yoga for jocks.” Webb now travels all over the world teaching her technique to sports teams, and soon she’ll be opening it up to the urban athlete as well with a location in Toronto. The single mom and successful businesswoman recently starred in the first season of Real Housewives of Toronto, the TV franchise’s first Canadian offering. What was the driving idea behind your company, Joga? I was in a car accident many, many years ago and I had to rehabilitate my body, so I was introduced to yoga. But I couldn’t actually do yoga because I was an athlete, so my body just wasn’t built for it in that I couldn’t touch my toes or do a lot of the positions that were offered. I learned about a program in Japan that prescribed individual movements based on your anatomical structure. I learned that style of yoga, brought it back to Canada, and I started teaching. I ended up getting a call from the Calgary Stampeders (CFL team) to go and teach yoga. I started working with them and learned very quickly that these athletes need something completely different than a traditional yoga program. They need something that can fit with their training regimen, something that could be implemented during off-season. What is the biggest difference between traditional yoga and yoga for athletes? I actually look at the biomechanics of sport. For example, a

Do you mostly work with football players, or other athletes as well? We work with the CFL, NBA, MLB, NFL, NHL – you name it, we work throughout all leagues. Now we’re taking this to the urban athlete and positioning [Joga] for the mom athlete, the corporate athlete. Pretty much anyone who has ever played a sport in their life thinks they’re an athlete (laughs) and they still go to the gym and they still train like an athlete. We’re now excited we have a bricks and mortar opening here in Toronto and we’re going to be able to offer that to the urban athlete. What was the experience like filming Real Housewives of Toronto? Ironically, I actually went to school for film and television, so I felt very prepared. I already understood what that meant in terms of understanding how a set works, how different shots work, and how to be on camera. That came very naturally for me. I tried to be an actress at one point and I thought, I am not good at this; I am just better being myself. So [RHOT] was a perfect fit for me because I am who I am. What do you think sets you apart from the rest of the cast? I think there are quite a few things. One is that I am doing this completely on my own. I started my business by myself, I’ve built it entirely on my own, I don’t have any husband that, one, supports me in what I’m doing every day and, second, supports me financially. I really am doing this by myself. As a busy single mom, how do you stay healthy? I think now more than ever I’m really practicing and focusing on that, but I definitely get my workout in every day. I eat well, but I definitely don’t have a regimen. I eat burgers, I love beef jerky, I eat pepperoni, and I love wine. I love eating! I just try to find that balance. What do you do to really treat yourself, to indulge? For me it’s always a big steak and a big bottle of wine! What’s your favourite spa treatment and why? These days my esthetician does this non-surgical facelift treatment where she takes something like an ultrasound wand and it emits a whole bunch of little vibrations that help with the elasticity of the skin. No knives involved! www. s p a inc .c a
