Bega is the business heart of the Bega Valley and a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and the forested escarpment. In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy
18 products. A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for all visitors to the region; it has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900s and provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products. Bega has a thriving arts community with its own Regional Gallery which hosts exhibitions all year, as well as the artist-run Spiral Gallery and Field-Martin Art Studio/Gallery. Stretch your legs around the walking track from the sporting fields near the Bridge, over to the Bega River and around the Old Racecourse.
