Dear Friends,

I hope this letter finds you and your loved ones well. With the second semester underway, I would like to express my gratitude for this community. Whether you are a parent, an alum or a friend, our mission is fueled by you and our dedicated faculty and staff. I am pleased to share some recent highlights that are only possible with your support.

Service to others is central to our mission of preparing Leaders for Life, Centered on Christ. There is no better example than the annual Christmas Baskets service project. Thanks to outstanding leadership from the senior class, our students were able to help more than 100 local families this Christmas season by providing gifts, groceries, and other household items. This is a testament not only to the giving nature of our families, faculty and staff, but also to the generosity of those in the greater community. It is an honor to carry on this tradition started more than 50 years by the BVM Sisters at St. Joseph Academy.

The generosity of our community extends far beyond the holiday season. To acknowledge and celebrate those individuals and organizations who support our school, we continue the tradition of publishing our Book of Gratitude which has been included in this edition of Focus magazine.

We appreciate the tremendous contributions of our faculty and staff and the support from our families, alumni, volunteers and local business partners. We recognize that the majority of our community members contribute far more than financial resources. You give of your time and talent, and for that we are incredibly grateful.

I would also like to extend a special thanks to our Leadership Council and Foundation Board for their tremendous contributions and generosity. I am also grateful to those leaving a legacy through your bequest intentions benefitting generations to come. To view the Book of Gratitude, please visit pages 24-47.

Looking to the future, in the last edition we shared the positive results of our planning study conducted in partnership with the Steier Group. I am pleased to share that we have received approval from Bishop Joensen and the Diocese of Des Moines to pursue a capital campaign. It is with excitement and gratitude that we introduce our campaign theme and leadership in the pages ahead. These individuals represent the best of us and are passionate about ensuring a successful future for our school.

Thank you for your continued support. Your partnership makes our mission possible.

In Christ,

OUR MISSION

Preparing Leaders for Life, Centered on Christ. Every Dowling Catholic graduate discovers and cultivates their God-given talents to make positive change in the world. ON THE COVER

Thanks to the generosity of those who contribute, we are able to continue offering a dynamic, well-rounded student experience. Every day, our students are encouraged to thrive, pursue their passions, and build lasting relationships within our faith-centered community. The impact of the We Are Maroons Annual Appeal is seen in the following ways:

ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT – Donor support funds innovative learning opportunities, advanced technology, and enhanced classroom resources, ensuring that every student receives a top-tier education and the chance to explore their interests. Our new Career Academy Program is designed to expose students to careers they’re passionate about, and thanks to generous contributions, we can continue to expand and grow this exciting effort.

FAITH-BASED FORMATION – Contributions help strengthen our Catholic identity by supporting programs that nurture students’ spiritual growth and guide them in living out their faith every day. From retreats to spiritual activities, support of the Annual Appeal makes all of this possible.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT – Donations support a wide range of extracurricular activities and programs that equip our students to become ethical, compassionate leaders in their communities and beyond. From athletics to the arts, every opportunity fosters leadership development for our students.

CAMPUS ENHANCEMENTS – Contributions play a vital role in the ongoing maintenance and improvement of our campus facilities. With donor support, we are able to invest in critical upgrades, including a new fire alarm and security system scheduled for installation in 2025. A Gift of Gratitude

Walter Davitt, a 1931 graduate, exemplifies the transformative power of Catholic education and the enduring impact of generosity. His story, as shared by his children, illustrates how one act of kindness can create a ripple effect that spans generations.

“We think the reason our father became a donor to Dowling was because he was the recipient of someone who paid his way when he needed help. Although his father was a successful farmer, he lost the family farm during the depression years. They moved to town and his mother took in laundry, cleaned homes and even rented out rooms for income. He wanted to go to the Catholic high school, which in those days was called the Des Moines Catholic College. He had a deep Catholic faith and also wanted to play baseball for the school, but there was no way his family could afford tuition. He applied and was able to attend when a generous person stepped up and paid his tuition.

A few years after graduation, he began sending a monthly check to Dowling to help with someone else’s tuition. He wanted to help provide others with the same opportunities he received. We think he started sending those checks in the 1940s and continued until his death in 2007. That’s close to 60 years of monthly checks.

We hope that his actions of giving back will be an example for those blessed by God to attend Dowling. The funds he contributed to tuition assistance never publicly included his name. He gave of pure faith and believed everything he had was a gift from God. His generosity also extended beyond Dowling Catholic and we enjoy hearing stories of how he helped others. Walter Davitt had a genuine, simple faith. We may be a bit biased, but dad was a saint long before he entered the pearly gates.”

“He had a deep Catholic faith and also wanted to play baseball for the school, but there was no way his family could afford tuition. He applied and was able to attend when a generous person stepped up and paid his tuition.”

The Dowling Catholic community came together in late October for the 63rd Annual Pancake Breakfast. Held in the Varied Industries Building at the Iowa State Fairgrounds, guests were treated to band and choir performances and had the opportunity to meet representatives from more than 30 different DCHS student clubs and extracurricular activities. With more than 2,400 tickets sold, proceeds will support the Student Activities Endowment which provides enhancements for existing clubs and groups and opportunities to form new ones.

Thank you to the approximately 500 student and adult volunteers who generously donated their time and talent to help make the event a success. We are grateful to Jen ‘89 and Paul Damge and Matt ‘86 and Bethany Kiernan who served as event co-chairs, Elizabeth Colosimo, the Maroon Bake Sale chair, and Deb Derry ‘89 who brought the campus store to the event. We are also grateful to Mr. Steve Holland, director of bands, and Mr. Quinn Tipping ‘09, director of choral music, for leading the student musicians and vocalists.

The event would not have been possible without sponsorship support from the following businesses: Nick & Jill Ryan, BSB Design

Architects, West Bank, A.J. Allen Mechanical Contractors, Dario Lenarduzzi Terrazzo Co., Wood Roofing & Sheet Metal, RBC Wealth Management, Graham Construction, BarrNunn Transportation LLC, Integrity Printing, Snyder & Associates, Middendorf Insurance Associates, Palmer Group, Oakwood Builders, Waldinger Corporation, Baker Group, Global Tech Services, Lisa Giudici Travel, Iowa Catholic Radio, JR Meat Co., FastSigns of Clive, Loffredo Fresh Foods, Hiland Dairy, Capital City Fruit and Raising Cane’s.

We would also like to thank Jeff Ferguson, director of student activities, and the club moderators and coaches who make it possible for us to offer more than 90 clubs and groups and for nearly 90% of DCHS students to participate in an extracurricular activity. Studies show that this type of participation builds confidence, develops leadership and time management skills, enhances academic performance, and improves emotional well being. Dowling Catholic Named Model PLC School

We are pleased to share that Dowling Catholic High School has been recognized by Solution Tree as a Model PLC (Professional Learning Community) at Work School. This achievement signifies a commitment to fostering a culture of collaboration, datadriven decision-making, and continuous professional development aimed at improving student outcomes.

DCHS is one of approximately 600 schools in the U.S. and Canada to receive the award. To qualify as a Model PLC, a school must demonstrate a commitment to PLC at Work® concepts, show significant student achievement over a three-year period, and present clear evidence of improved student learning. The school must also provide data annually that shows they continue to meet

National Merit Semifinalists

Dowling Catholic is proud to announce that seniors Max Piazza and Jacob Suresh have been named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced the names of approximately 16,000 semifinalists in the 70th Annual National Merit Scholarship Program in September.

Students enter the scholarship program by taking the Preliminary SAT (PSAT). The nationwide pool of semifinalists includes the highest scoring entrants in each state who represent less than one percent of all high school seniors in the U.S. Those who are named finalists in the program will have the opportunity to be considered for scholarships that will be offered in the spring. Congratulations on this prestigious honor!

Solution Tree has served as a leading provider of educational strategies and tools for more than 25 years, working to transform education worldwide by empowering teachers and administrators to create schools where all students succeed.

Career Academy

Dowling Catholic High School is committed to providing a challenging curriculum that prepares students for educational and career opportunities beyond high school. As we strive to inspire and prepare the next generation of leaders and innovators, DCHS has launched a new Career Academy program designed to expose students to a rigorous core curriculum while simultaneously teaching college-and career-ready skills in specific fields.

In this unique program, students embark on a transformative journey that couples a comprehensive curriculum with the realworld application of learning. With a focus on hands-on activities, mentorship, and realworld experiences, our career academies empower students to explore their passions, develop critical skills, and chart a course toward fulfilling and impactful careers in these dynamic fields.

There are 32 sophomores involved in the program’s pilot year which began in the fall and includes academies offered in the fields of Health Sciences and Engineering & Technology. Over the next three years, the students will participate in a variety of experiences that will include field trips, guest speakers and shadowing opportunities and will culminate with a required capstone project senior year.

The program is led by Kasey Tickel who

has been teaching for 30 years, the last 26 of which have been at Dowling Catholic where she taught Spanish and served as the World Language Department chair. In addition to her new role as director of career academies, she currently teaches Foundations of Education & Field Experience classes and serves as codirector of Dowling Catholic’s new teacher mentoring program.

“I am very excited that we are now offering our career academies program and I’m thrilled to be the director,” said Tickel. “In our pilot year, it has been great to get to know the sophomores and see them explore, learn and grow. One of the most fascinating parts for me has been to learn about careers and jobs that did not even exist when I was in school. Our students are learning about and getting hands-on experience in new careers that many of us never dreamed of.”

To bring real-world application into the high school experience, the program draws on the expertise of local business partners. Tickel hopes to engage alumni, current and past parents, and members of the greater DCHS community in the program.

“One of the best parts of this new program has been reconnecting with alumni who have very willingly gotten involved,” said Tickel. “They have been very gracious about sharing their expertise and

offering their time to mentor and speak with our students about their educational paths and careers. It’s great to have them continue to be involved with Dowling Catholic and for our students to start forming connections with alumni in our community. I’m excited to continue to reach out and involve our alumni as we expand our program over the next two years.”

Dr. Steven Craig ‘72, retired dean of the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine and a physicianeducator for 40 years, served as the first guest speaker. In his presentation titled “So You Think You Might Want to Become a Doctor,” he shared his educational and career path and advised students on how to prepare in high school, what to do in college to get admitted to medical school, and more.

Additional guest speakers included alumni Andrew Post ‘16 and Monica Moylan’16 who both work at engineering firms in the Des Moines area. The Health Sciences Academy hosted speakers Alyssa (Blasco) Bolger ‘08, a physical therapist, Dr. Rachel (Wenham) Reinsvold ‘11, a pharmacist, and Dr. Thomas Klein, an interventional pain management physician.

Students also took several field trips during the first semester, including visits to Iowa PBS to learn about sound engineering and production and Ramco Innovations where students explored robotics and engineering in manufacturing.

Health Sciences students had the opportunity to attend events at Des Moines University, including the Young Scientist Day where they toured the new West Des Moines campus and surgical simulator, and the Pre-Health Summit, a virtual event where students participated in interactive sessions about the path to health professions school.

Future plans include the addition of four new academies over the next two years. The academies of Business, Finance & Innovation and Education & Human Services will be implemented next year, followed by Law & Government and Arts & Communication for the 2026-27 school year.

“The Career Academies Program was an idea born from our most recent strategic plan as a way for our students to build real-world connections with the learning they do every day here at Dowling Catholic,” said Dr. Erica Arnold, assistant principal. “We feel strongly that allowing students the chance to earnestly discern future careers in high school will help them make informed decisions sooner about their post-secondary plans. The fact that we also get to engage our outstanding alumni and Dowling Catholic community along the way makes this program even more powerful. I am thrilled with the success of the first year of the program and look forward to all of the great opportunities that lie ahead for the program and our students.”

Band Highlights

Band is a year-round activity at Dowling Catholic that provides students with the opportunity to experience instrumental music in a variety of styles through participation in Vanguard, Drumline, Wind Band, Jazz Band, Pep Band and Chamber Ensemble. The season begins with camp in early August and includes weekend competitions, performances at home football and basketball games, concerts throughout the year, and the opportunity to perform at a variety of community events.

The Vanguard kicked off the competition season with a strong performance in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, where they earned a third-place finish. They finished the season in October at the State Marching Festival in Waukee where they received the highest rating possible followed by an outstanding performance that evening at the Waukee Invitational where they finished first in Class 4A and earned top honors for best marching and best drumline.

The Color Guard, a flag and dance auxiliary unit of Vanguard, continued competing in December with a great performance at the Iowa State Dance Team Association (ISDTA) Dance and Color Guard Championships held at Hy-Vee Hall in Des Moines. The team earned a Division I rating and placed fifth overall. Payton Moore competed in the solo finalist round and finished seventh.

Additional highlights from the semester include the selection of four students for the Drake University Honor Band Festival held in December on the Drake campus. Abbie Rodriguez-Lewis, Gregory Pease, David Juric and Grace Aerisolphal participated in the two day festival that provides outstanding high school musicians with the opportunity to play together and work with guest conductors and members of the Drake Department of Music faculty. The event culminates with a concert featuring the Drake Bands and the Honor Band which is comprised of over 200 students who are among the finest in the nation.

Also in December the Jazz II and Jazz Ensemble traveled to the Fred (‘51) and Patti Turner Jazz Center at Drake University where they performed and had the opportunity to be critiqued by the university’s head of jazz studies. The bands finished the semester with a beautiful Christmas concert in the auditorium at Dowling Catholic followed by the annual tradition of touring the community with Christmas carols.

The concert takes place annually and features performances from Iowa’s top high school musicians and vocalists. Out of nearly 2,100 students who auditioned, approximately 17% were chosen for the All-State Band, Orchestra and Chorus. Congratulations to our students on this remarkable achievement.

State Swimming

The Dowling Catholic Girls Swim and Dive Team earned the state championship title on Saturday, November 16, 2024. The victory was a testament to the depth of the team as the Maroons totaled 12 top-eight performances and scored points in every event, finishing with 260 points to win the second state team championship in school history.

“It truly took a team effort to win the meet because we didn’t win a single event, however we scored reasonably well in every event to pull it off,”said coach Paul Eure. “The girls put their heart into this meet and the entire season. They push each other and really bring out the best in each other.”

The team earned five top-five performances and two swimmers placed in the top eight in two events. The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Ginny Heddinger, Sassy Hassett, Kimber Corwin and Taylor

Hall placed second with a time of 1:37.32, finishing just behind Bettendorf at 1:35.07.

Charlotte Qualley, Heddinger, Corwin and Hall finished fourth in the 200 medley relay and Anna Huss, Mary Honkamp, Hassett and Qualley took sixth in the 400 freestyle relay. Individually, DCHS was led by Qualley, Heddinger, Corwin and Honkamp.

Qualley took third in the 200 freestyle and fifth in the 100 backstroke. Heddinger won a bronze medal in the 100 breaststroke, Corwin took fifth in the 200 individual medley and Honkamp placed fifth in the 500 freestyle. Lucy Huss earned a spot on the podium in the 100 butterfly and Anna Huss finished sixth in the 500 freestyle.

Finishing behind Dowling Catholic in the team standings were Waukee Northwest in second followed by Cedar Falls, Bettendorf and Ames. The Maroons earned their first state team title in 2019.

State Dance

The Dowling Catholic dance team performed at the Iowa State Dance Team Association (ISDTA) Championships in Des Moines on December 6, 2024. The 48th annual competition was held at Wells Fargo Arena and Hy-Vee Hall where teams and soloists were evaluated by industry professionals from across the country.

As a team, Dowling Catholic placed second in Class XIII Pom, third in Class VII Jazz, and fifth in Class III Lyrical. In addition, the following five dancers competed as soloists after qualifying at the ISDTA State Solo competition in October: Brooklyn Coen (second place), Claire Southard (third place), Brooklyn O’Conner (fourth place), Katelynn Larson (eighth place), and Lily Schweizer (ninth place).

Congratulations to the entire team on an outstanding season!

The 2014 State Football Championship team came together for a 10-year reunion in October when they were recognized during halftime of the DCHS vs. Ankeny Centennial football game. The reunion included players, coaches and alumni cheerleaders.

Fr. Reed Flood ‘13, Fr. James Downey ‘11 and Mr. Terry Clark ‘96 accompanied 12 DCHS juniors and seniors on a pilgrimage to Iceland from December 27 to January 5. During this journey, they sought to discern God’s call to holiness through prayer, contemplation, and adventure while exploring the island’s natural beauty. In addition to daily Mass and dedicating substantial time to prayer, the group challenged themselves physically by working out and climbing Mt. Helgafell’s Holy Mountain. They also explored a lava tunnel, visited a national park, enjoyed the renowned black sand beach, and concluded the trip’s adventures at the Blue Lagoon. They also had the opportunity to attend Mass with the cloistered nuns and learn more about their lifestyle and discernment. “I want to show the world that following God‘s will is actually awesome,” said Fr. Flood. “Choosing to live that Divine Adventure in this life will help us to live the adventure in the next.”

Dowling Catholic’s 2024 Homecoming festivities included the revival of an old tradition as the Alumni Band came together for a reunion. Former band and color guard members performed at the Homecoming football game, joining the current DCHS band during the first half and performing solo in the second. The reunion group included one priest and alumni ranging from the classes of 1972 to 2024.

The DCHS community came together to celebrate the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe with a beautiful Mass in the St. Joseph Chapel. The Our Lady of Guadalupe statue was a reunion gift from the Class of 1978.

“I want to show the world that following God‘s will is actually awesome. Choosing to live that Divine Adventure in this life will help us to live the adventure in the next.”

Christmas Baskets

Dowling Catholic High School is proud to carry on the timehonored tradition of helping local families in need during the Christmas season. Started more than 50 years ago by the BVM Sisters at St. Joseph Academy, Christmas Baskets has become one of the largest, school-wide service projects at DCHS.

The project is led by the senior class which enlists help from students in all grade levels, their families, faculty and staff, and members of the greater DCHS community. In early November, each senior group is assigned a family they meet with to determine their wants and needs, and a homeroom of underclassmen who are invited to donate or participate in the project in other ways.

This year, faculty and staff contributed 475 gifts, one for each student attending Moulton Elementary, and monetary donations, a portion of which receive matching gift support each year thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor. Many student groups at DCHS also support the project, including the St. Joseph’s Fall Project and the Art Club which creates a hand-crafted

decoration or ornament for each family every year.

In addition to toys and other gifts, each family receives groceries, toiletries, household items, clothing, and other necessities. Much of this is possible thanks to the generous support from local partners, including Capital City Fruit, Two Men and a Truck, the Variety Club, and others in the community.

At the helm of the project is Jeff Ferguson, director of student activities and a longtime teacher who has been leading Christmas Baskets for more than three decades. Planning and coordinating a project of this magnitude requires that his work behind the scenes begins months before the Christmas season. Despite years of experience, executing the project is no easy feat with the success dependent on many working parts and the accountability of more than 300 busy high school seniors.

The project concludes with the Candlelighting prayer service before seniors go out into the community to make deliveries

“The fact that a bunch of teenagers and school employees can pull off a project of this size year after year speaks volumes about everything we are doing right here at Dowling Catholic.”

to their families. Thanks to their dedication and outstanding leadership, DCHS students helped make Christmas merrier for 104 local families.

“I have been heading up this project for 33 years,” said Ferguson. “Every year we are presented with new challenges and hardships. The one constant in all of these years is the generosity and thoughtfulness of our kids, our

faculty, and our staff. The fact that a bunch of teenagers and school employees can pull off a project of this size year after year speaks volumes about everything we are doing right here at Dowling Catholic. It is a testament that we are living and teaching the values of being faithful, caring, and dedicated. Thank you to everyone who played a vital role in making Christmas a whole lot merrier for 1,071 people.”

Honoring the Departed

Each fall Dowling Catholic students create an ofrenda in celebration of Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos, a Latin American holiday observed on November 1 and 2. This year’s 21st Annual Art Club Ofrenda was created in honor of Sister Elaine Claire Hagedorn, an alumna from the St. Joseph Academy Class of 1953. The ofrenda was on display in the Narthex following the unveiling and prayer service, offering a place of remembrance and welcoming those who visited the chapel to pray for the departed during the month of November.

More than 60 students contributed their time and talent to creating the meaningful tribute under the direction of Mrs. Brenda Kane, an art teacher and Art Club moderator who has led the project since its inception with guidance also provided by Mrs. Paula Plasencia ‘71, community & cultural liaison at DCHS.

Sister Hagedorn was a Catholic school teacher, a principal and the area coordinator for the Des Moines Diocese Social Action division. She also served for 30 years in ministry at Visitation Parish, now called Our Lady of the Americas.

“When Paula Plasencia approached me with the sad news of Sister Elaine passing in late August, it seemed like a no-brainer that we needed to honor her with our Día de los Muertos ofrenda this year,” said Kane. “Sister played a pivotal role in education for years. She spoke up against injustices and was awarded the Bishop Dingman Peace Award for standing up for immigrants, the oppressed and uplifting the marginalized. I cannot think of anyone more deserving of our students’ artistic attention because of her focus on living a life truly following the footsteps of Jesus.”

In Memory of Denny O’Grady

The Dowling Catholic community mourns the loss of Denny O’Grady, an alumnus from the Class of 1967 and longtime sports announcer for DCHS who passed away after a short battle with cancer on December 8, 2024.

Denny was born in Des Moines on June 20,1948, to Thomas and Gena (Harang) O’Grady. His love for the Maroons began when he attended Dowling High School where he was the football, baseball and basketball manager. He went on to attend the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota, where he served as a sports manager and sports editor of the school newspaper. Following graduation, Denny began his 30-year career at the Carroll Times-Herald where he covered sports in Carroll, Iowa, and surrounding areas. Over the years he was honored as a sportswriter and was a recipient of the Carroll Chamber of Commerce Humanitarian Service Award.

In retirement, Denny returned to Des Moines and began announcing for Dowling Catholic in 2004. He offered his time and talent on a volunteer basis, beginning with football and evolving to include volleyball, wrestling, basketball, track and baseball. His knowledge and dedication to DCHS athletics was unparalleled, and over the course of 20 years of dedicated service, he became known as the voice of the Maroons.

Upon his passing, tributes recognized his dedication to his work, service to his beloved Maroons, and his friendship, with many also fondly recalling his booming voice and infamous catchphrases. Whether he was bellowing “touchdown Maroons” at a football game or encouraging someone to “finish strong” at a track meet, he always remained positive and was the first to offer praise, win or lose. Prior to his passing, he was recognized for his tremendous contributions with induction into the Dowling Catholic Athletic Hall of Fame. When presented with the award, he shared that above all else, he did it for the kids.

Denny is survived by his sister, Maureen (Michael) Badeaux of West Des Moines, IA,; nieces and nephews Meredith (Matthew) Schaffer of Lincoln, NE, Morgan Badeaux of West Des Moines, IA, Marc (Maggie) Badeaux of Clive, IA, Mollie (Brett Damos) Badeaux of Clive, IA, and 11 great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Thomas “T.J.” O’Grady, and nephew Matthew Badeaux. Memorial contributions may be made to the Dowling Catholic High School Athletic Fund. The Dowling Catholic Performing Arts Department brought humor to the stage for the fall play production of Robin Hood and His Merry Men with three performances presented to the community in late October.

Written by Richard Gremel, this is the classic tale of Robin Hood but with a comedic twist. The play tells the story of Prince John who has decreed that the citizens of Nottingham pay weekly taxes or face the penalty of death. The citizens think that all hope is lost until they hear the word of a noble hero, Robin Hood of Locksley. Robin Hood, with the help of his merry men (most of whom are female), robs from the rich, gives to the poor, and saves the fair Maid Marian. The comic retelling includes thumb wars, missed cues, and a slow motion fight.

The play was directed by Sarah Raymond, a teacher and drama director at DCHS, and included a cast and crew of 45 students. The story is full of wit and unexpected surprises with plenty of opportunities for students to garner a laugh from the audience.

“I have always wanted to do a version of Robin Hood, and I read MANY versions of the classic story before settling on the comedy version,” said Raymond. “I knew I was going to have a strong group audition this year, and I wanted to make sure I had a script worthy of their hard work.”

One of the lead roles, Maid Marian, was played by senior Ella Johnson who has been involved with the performing arts at Dowling Catholic since her freshman year.

“For every student, senior year is marked by a series of lasts; for me, saying goodbye to the Dowling Catholic stage after four fall plays has been one of the hardest,” said Johnson. “I will forever be grateful for the castmates I have met, the friends I have made, the directors who have guided me, the audiences who have supported me, and the characters who have become a part of me.”

This Girl Laughs, This Girl Cries, This Girl Does Nothing

The winter play production of This Girl Laughs, This Girl Cries, This Girl Does Nothing by Finegan Kruckemeyer was presented to the Dowling Catholic community in early December with a special matinee performance for more than 450 fourth grade students before opening night.

The modern-day fairy tale tells the story of three young sisters - triplets - who are left in the forest and forced to find their own way in the world. One sister goes to find purpose, the second to find adventure, and the third stays right where she was left by their father to build her home and life. Years later, after individual journeys and experiences, the three sisters find their way back to one another. With family at the core and forgiveness an unspoken aspect of the play, the storyline is engaging for children while also including lessons for adults.

The winter play is produced and performed by Acting + students, a class taught by Sarah Raymond that includes students at the sophomore level and higher who have completed Acting I and II. Raymond directs the play, and this year there were 12 students in the cast and crew.

“The winter play is always a challenge as we have a revolving group of Acting + kids, but it is also traditionally a kid’s show,” said Raymod. “I always want to pick a show that will keep the fourth graders engaged, but that will also be a good experience for our veteran actors. This Girl Laughs was the perfect fit, and my Acting + students were invested from day one. It was definitely one of my favorite shows to produce.”

The winter play is the second of three shows produced annually by the Performing Arts Department. The spring musical production of Shrek will be presented to the community May 1-3, 2025.

And that is what makes me the perfect representative of Dowling Catholic’s community, because I am not only an active participant in it, but I am a result of it.”

“My dad graduated from Dowling in the early 40s. Though his dad died when he was four, his mother and older sisters made multiple sacrifices for him to attend Dowling and receive a Catholic education. He paid it forward by making planned giving an important part of the family budget. Though I don’t have any children, I feel I still have the obligation to continue to pay it forward.”

Create Your Legacy

Many of Dowling Catholic High School’s supporters have chosen to advance the values that have been most important in their lives by providing a gift through their will. Regardless of the size of your gift, you can provide funding to help support the causes important to you.

Dowling Catholic is pleased to offer our alumni, parents and friends free access to Giving Docs, a full suite of estate planning tools. Here you can easily create a simple will, make updates to an existing will and establish durable power of attorney and advanced health care directives, to name a few. You are not required to leave a gift to utilize these estate planning resources. This is our gift to you.

To get started, simply scan the QR code or visit plannedgiving.dowlingcatholic.org/giving-docs.

“As both an employee and a parent of a current junior and two graduates, I have gotten to see all of the amazing things that go on here at Dowling Catholic from many angles. I’ve personally witnessed the benefits of a DCHS education for my sons and what it means for them to be Leaders for Life, Centered on Christ. Seeing their successes and working with the many extraordinary Maroons I’ve encountered over the years makes supporting the Annual Appeal an easy decision each year.”
