Introducing
Mrs Charlotte Sabnis Head of Modern Foreign Languages
“
I believe that Downe House is an environment where languages can really thrive. The openness of pupils to new ideas fuels my enthusiasm for showcasing the broader and richer aspects of language education.
In September 2023, we were delighted to welcome Charlotte Sabnis as the new Head of Modern Foreign Languages. Charlotte brings a wealth of teaching experience, coupled with a passion for languages and a profound appreciation for the opportunities they can unlock. Having earned her degree in French, Russian, and Arabic from the University of St Andrews, Charlotte’s journey led her to Oundle School, where she played a pivotal role in the development of the Russian department and later assumed leadership of the French department. Charlotte’s motivation for teaching is deeply rooted in her daily immersion in the subject matter and pursuing teaching as a career was driven by a genuine desire to live and breathe the languages she loves. She firmly believes that teachers who have a profound love for their subjects wield considerable influence.
Over the past three years, Charlotte has actively contributed to the Committee of the Independent Schools’ Modern Languages Association. In this capacity, she and her colleagues have kept member schools abreast of current developments in language education and organised events that champion Modern Foreign Language education in the UK. Additionally, she has served as Deputy Housemistress for five years and, for two terms, as an acting Housemistress, finding deep satisfaction and enjoyment in these multifaceted pastoral roles and responsibilities. In her new role, Charlotte envisions creating crosscurricular opportunities for pupils, integrating various subjects with language learning, creating a dynamic educational experience that fosters both personal and academic growth.
“I relish the challenge of convincing teenagers that language learning goes beyond mere word acquisition and that mastering another language enhances empathy, open-mindedness, and employability. Seeing students embark on university journeys to study languages, particularly those who initially doubted its feasibility, brings me immense joy.” -Mrs Charlotte Sabnis Downe House, Cold Ash, Berkshire RG18 9JJ T: +44(0)1635 200286 | www.downehouse.net
