UPPER SIXTH

Academic Enrichment and Life Skills Programme A bespoke on-line programme of short courses & individual workshops to challenge, inspire & prepare you for life beyond School

INTRODUCTION Explore your interests - with no pressure! It is very rare in our lives that we are given the gift of time to explore interests and develop our knowledge without the pressure of examinations or assessments. Although we would not have chosen to be in the situation that we are today, we must look for positives (something you are very good at!) and we have a responsibility to use the time we have productively. I have no doubt that you will want to do this and I hope that you will enjoy the rich and varied range of courses and one-off sessions detailed in this brochure for you. I hope that you will enjoy selecting those that reflect your interests and that you will also enjoy challenging yourself to delve into areas that you know little about and acquire skills that will be useful to you in the future. Sincere thanks are due to Ms Stimson and Mrs Reeve who have brought together this excellent programme.

189 HOURS TO ENJOY!

This is an opportunity to try something new or up-skill Although you are not physically at Downe House for this final term, we have brought together a diverse Enrichment Programme for you, albeit remotely! Read through all the wonderful courses on offer and take this opportunity to try something new. The programme is a mixture of five-week courses, single sessions and Wednesday evening lectures, and has been deliberately designed to be varied, flexible and most importantly, manageable. Please choose at least five of the five-week courses as they provide a chance to gain a deeper insight into the subject matter whether that is Medical Ethics or Vinyasa Yoga! You can certainly do more if you wish but five is the minimum. In addition, please choose 9 single sessions to join over the five weeks. We are lucky to have some practical workshops, some lectures and interactive sessions on offer for these. There are only two compulsory elements to the programme; the USTEER session and the ‘Preparing for University’ MOOC from FutureLearn in conjunction with UEA. The MOOC takes 3 hours a week and focuses on exploring some key skills needed for success at university. Your tutors will hold a group tutorial each week to explore the themes you have studied in this MOOC. Click on the link below and sign up using the MS Form by Tuesday 5 May at 6pm. The courses are led by members of the Downe House community and by external guests, both Zoom and Microsoft Teams will be used depending on their preference. You need, therefore, to ensure you commit fully to the courses and turn up on time! Any questions, then please do email either Mrs Reeve or myself. You are missed a great deal and we hope to see you all really soon.

COMPULSORY FOR EVERYONE LED BY: FUTURELEARN & UEA

This MOOC is run in conjunction with FutureLearn and the University of East Anglia. All girls are required to undertake this course (3 hours per week) and to discuss their progress with their Tutor in their weekly group Tutorial. They are also attributes that employers value in graduates. In this course you will explore some key skills needed for success at university. You will hear what university lecturers have to say about skills their students excel at, or struggle with, from undergraduates about areas they have found difficult and some top tips for coping with the university learning environment. At the end of each week there will be an exercise where you will be self-critical and reflect on your progress. By completing this online course you will be able to: • Explore and engage with the skills needed for success at university. • Identify with what university lecturers have to say about skills their students excel at or struggle with. • Explore what lecturers value in their students. • Collect top tips for coping with the university learning environment. GENDER ECONOMICS

PERIOD POVERTY

OPEN TO: EVERYONE LED BY: MS AKHTAR

This course will examine the links between Gender and Poverty with particular emphasis on Period Poverty through the lens of Nobel Laureates and Bollywood films. To what extent does lack of access to sanitary products, WASH facilities, dignity, and information about menstruation impact on the economic empowerment of women? From a rural village in Africa to a council estate in Aberdeen or a slum in Boston, period poverty is a widespread issue concerning young women and girls worldwide. From being banished into huts in Nepal to tampon tax in the western world, women are being stopped from reaching their full potential at school, in the home and at work. It is only once we have access to affordable sanitary products, accurate information on our menstrual health and absolutely zero feelings of shame and stigma attached to this issue, can we bring this injustice of period poverty to an end.

A brief introduction to homo economicus. • Session 2 - UN goal to address gender poverty and views of Nobel Laureates Abhijeet Banerjee and Esther Duflo. • Sessions 3 & 4 - Oxford Union address by producer of the film, Padman. • Session 5 - Measures to deal with Period Poverty in Toronto, Boston, Glasgow, Adelaide, Melbourne and Nepal followed by how a school girl in London took this issue to the parliament.

INTRODUCTION TO

MEDICAL ETHICS

OPEN TO: EVERYONE LED BY: MRS HELEN WOOD

Medical ethics involves examining a specific problem, usually a clinical case, and using values, facts, and logic to decide what the best course of action should be. Some ethical problems are fairly straightforward, such as determining right from wrong. But others can also be more perplexing, such as deciding between two ‘rights’—two values that are in conflict with each other—or deciding between two different value systems, such as the patient’s versus the doctor’s. In this course, the following ethical problems will be discussed: • Session 1 - • Session 2 - • Session 3 - • Session 4 - • Session 5 -

Who gets the ventilator? The ethics of the allocation of medical resources during a pandemic. Medical research trials - why do medical research trials for medicines and medical devices require ethical approval? What is the process by which medical research gets approval. Euthanasia and assisted dying. What is the current legal position in the U.K.? What happens in other jurisdictions and why has the UK not changed the law to allow one or both? Treatment decisions for very ill children. Why do the courts get involved and why don’t parents have the final say on what happens to their child? What is death - a philosophical and legal explanation?

Helen Wood is a Downe House parent who practised as a Solicitor in the City of London for 10 years. She recently completed a Masters in Medical Ethics and Law at King’s College, London. She is a trustee of a medical research charity, Myelopathy.org and a Lay Plus member of the London (Bromley) Research Ethics Committee.

COMING OF AGE

MODERN EUROPEAN LITERATURE

OPEN TO: EVERYONE LED BY: MRS REICHARDT

A representation of the female bildungsroman in French, Italian and Spanish literature. This course will explore how the protagonists of each novel negotiate their way towards female emancipation in a post-war Europe still dominated by a society of traditional, patriarchal values. We will look at the historical context of post-war France and Italy, and that of Franco’s Spain, as well as literary theory on the importance of the adolescent female character in representations of a patriarchal society. • Session 1 - The concept of the female bildungsroman as a coming of age story, and an exploration of its significance in the context of 1950s France, Italy and Spain. • Session 2 - Bonjour Tristesse by Francoise Sagan. Published in 1954 when Sagan was only 18, Bonjour Tristesse was an instant best seller and caused scandal in France at the time. Sagan broaches themes that had never been openly talked about in books before in France: female emancipation, sexual promiscuity and a disregard for conventional values. Will it still shock the reader of the 21st century? • Session 3 - Los Ninos Tontos by Ana Maria Matute. The Foolish Children, ‘Los Ninos Tontos’, was first published in Spain in 1956 under Franco’s dictatorship and has been described as ‘one of the most important works written in Spanish by a woman’. Ana Maria Matute is widely considered one of Spain’s most distinguished writers of fiction in the 20th century and our reading of a selection of her short stories will allow us to delve deeper into how the representation, and repression, of the female protagonist can serve as a metaphor for the oppression of life under Franco. • Sessions 4 & 5 - My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante. This is our longest novel of the course, so do try to set time aside to read it. You won’t be disappointed! It’s a powerful evocation of female friendship during childhood, adolescence and adulthood, published in 2012 but set in the gritty, streets of 1950s Naples. Through the lives of Elena and Lila, Ferrante uses the ‘coming of age novel’ to represent a city, country and society undergoing momentous change. MATERIALS REQUIRED: English translations of Bonjour Tristesse, My Brilliant Friend and Los Ninos Tontos (all available from Amazon). Pages of Los Ninos Tontos will be available if you have difficulty getting hold of it.
