EDITOR’S LETTER The one that that is truly consistent in this world is that people are constantly (and relentlessly) trying to pursue and connect with nature. People can’t stop themselves from looking out the window at a park, a stand of trees, a lake or at the mountains. The Okanagan Valley provides the absolute perfect platform for man, woman and child to find that perfect balance between the great outdoors and the hurried pace of day to day life. The lakes, hillsides and expanses of the great wide open blend together to bring you the ultimate outdoor amphitheater. A place where you can ski and water-ski in the same day. A place where you can ease back on a busy beach, or hike up to a remote lookout and take it all in from afar. Needless to say, even people that consider themselves home bodies inevitably find themselves gardening and cutting the grass, the weather allows for it, the weather inspires people to get outside, stay outside and soak up all the delightful experiences that it has to offer. So please, for our sake, for your sake, get outside and enjoy everything that the enchanted Okanagan has to offer, surely one of the greatest places on earth!

The Okanagan Is More Than Just Stunning Sunsets At the intersection of modern and traditional, the Okanagan Valley flourishes as the old accepts the new.
A
s our beloved community (the entire Okanagan Valley) continues to expand within and beyond its borders, one thing remains evident, that we are the luckiest people in the world to call this place home. It is a magical time as the region forges ahead with city infrastructure and community development. As the business hub of the Okanagan, Kelowna is experiencing major modernization to the hospital, airport and regional roadways. What was once considered the outskirts of town is now being fully incorporated into a bigger scene. This all adds up to having a better ability to welcome residents and visitors alike to a more modern and updated environment. As much as things continue to change, most of the charm of the Okanagan continues to stay the same. Rolling mountain

backdrops, flawless fresh water lakes and hot summer days (one after another, sometimes for months at a time) grace this area, and likely will forever! Although this valley is famous for long, hot summers, it is slowly gaining traction as a winter playground too. For the most part winters in the region are pretty mild, certainly compared to the rest of Canada. Within an hours drive of almost every city/town in the region, there is a ski/snowboard resort. Winter sports are like planting crops, you live and die by the weather. Some years you have a banner crop, and some years you just don’t! This part of the world is no different. In the North Okanagan near Vernon is Silver Star Mountain Resort, renowned for dry
ABSOLUTE | Okanagan
Okanagan powder, an incredible terrain park with features for everyone and a great, colourful village. They operate year-round, offering downhill mountain biking and a bike park too! Big White is centrally located in the area, just 45 minutes north east of Kelowna. They too benefit from cold, dry snow, several family oriented activities aside from skiing and snowboarding and play host to many local, provincial, national and international events. A quick thirty minutes outside of Penticton is Apex Resort, a full service destination resort known for light snow, friendly people and great terrain. Whether you like cruising the groomed runs, slashing through the trees or taking flight in the terrain park, with so much variety there is something for every skill and age level. There are many other choices for winter adventures as well. Ice fishing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, ice climbing and cross country skiing are all popular and easy when Mother Nature offers such an elaborate and extensive playground! There is no question that the best season in the Okanagan is the summertime! Outdoor living is king in this part of the world. So, you best get to the beach or get on a boat or fire golf balls down a fairway. When the weather is primo, usually for at least
seven months of the year, try and spend as much time out of doors as possible. That’s why we are here, to soak up the lifestyle. If you are in search of busy beaches full of children, teenagers and adults then head to Gyro Beach. This is the main target for beachgoers in search of excitement and activities. Gyro Beach also has an amazing grassy area with huge shade trees scattering the property with hordes of people playing volleyball, bocce ball, Frisbee and even the odd slackrope walker. If you are in search of peace and quite, then this likely is not the spot for you. Good news, you’re in luck. There are many (and I mean many) much smaller public accesses to the water all along the entire length of the lakeshore. Of course beach culture is not for everyone, and that means you are more in the mood for an adventure and exploring the surroundings. Essentially the Okanagan Valley runs North/South. So for the adventurer heading East or West, it brings you into the more rural parts of the valley where you can find fishing lodges, pristine wilderness lakes and campsites. So if you require more adventure than sitting in the sand, wonder into the hillsides and discover all the vineyards, orchards and hiking/biking trails.

The Okanagan is not just limited to adventure, lifestyle and agriculture, it also accommodates a wide variety or traditional sports too. The weather often dictates what you do and when, but when the weather cooperates, it is mostly sunny and you can do whatever you want, whenever you want. That’s the Okanagan way. Soccer, tennis, golf, cycling, volleyball, softball and football, from organized leagues to weekend fun, there are enough fields, courts and courses for everyone visiting or living in the Okanagan. And, if it is too windy to participate in these sports, head down to Rotary Beach on Lakeshore Rd. and watch the multi-coloured kite boarders dance through the air and across the water in choreographed chaos. There are four main bodies of water as you travel from North to South in the Okanagan Valley, and literally hundreds of smaller ones. Vernon is lucky enough to have shoreline on two lakes, Okanagan Lake, the largest body of water in the region and Kalamalka Lake, the most colourful body of water in the region. What makes this lake so unique is the crystal clear azure blue waters. This gives such a tropical feel. If you can’t get out in a boat, at least make the effort to get to the shore, it is such a wonderful experience and

you will not be disappointed. Okanagan Lake runs from Vernon in the North all the way down to Penticton in the South. There is only one bridge, The W.R. Bennett Bridge which spans Okanagan Lake. It is centrally located in Kelowna at the narrowest point in the lake. It is not only a long lake, but a very deep lake as well, with some spots deeper than 1000 feet. It is rumoured that they have never actually found the bottom of Okanagan Lake, opening the door for legendary stories of Ogopogo, an entirely different topic that you should explore on your own… Okanagan Lake funnels into Skaha Lake via the Penticton Channel. For a relaxing afternoon, grab an inner tube, some sunscreen, a floating cooler and cruise down the channel with a bunch of your closest friends. If you are not a “floater”, take the time to see the canal with your own eyes on a sunny long weekend day in the summer, you will be caught off guard by how many people are actually doing this. Skaha Lake is a little smaller than Okanagan & Kalamalka Lakes and comes to a halt at Okanagan Falls. The final body of water on the list is Osoyoos Lake, which heads South from the town of Osoyoos and makes it way across the border and into the U.S.. It is not uncommon to hear stories of locals starting their day in Osoyoos, visiting a winery and jumping into Canada’s warmest lake. Then the start to head north, visit another winery and jump into Skaha Lake. One more winery and you find yourself in

Okanagan Lake. Finally the tropical waters of Kalamalka Lake are followed by a delightful treat from a local distillery. From the North Okanagan down to the border in the south, the roadsides and lakesides have little communities that each have a charm of their own. North of Kelowna there is an area sandwiched between Okanagan Lake and Kalamalka Lake named Lake Country, aptly titled considering its surroundings. The two business communities are Winfield and Oyama, both are full service towns with fuel, food, hotels and marinas, while Carrs Landing and Okanagan Centre are the other two that make up Lake Country. They are more rural with homes, cottages, picnic areas and waterfront parks. After crossing the bridge in Kelowna and starting to head south you come to Peachland and Summerland. Peachland is an adorable lakeside community that has pebble beaches stretching the entire length of the town, the best Sunday walk in the area. With big developments in the hills above the town site, Peachland has some of the best views in the valley too. Summerland has an olde English charm, as well as a fantastic waterfront, with resorts, parks, beaches and restaurants. As you wind your way along the highway you encounter such gems as Okanagan Falls and Oliver. This region is on the northern tip of the Sonoran Desert and these moisture rich soils are famous for some amazing wines. The hills are covered with scrub
brush and ponderosa pines. Like the entire South Okanagan, daytime temperatures in summer are consistently in the mid 30’s. If you are interested in learning about and tasting amazing vintages, you will enjoy the “Wine Capital of Canada”. If you are still stuck in the mindset that the Okanagan Valley is just wineries, beaches and ski resorts…. to a certain degree you are correct! With so many options to every aspect, life here can be as hurried as you want it to be or as relaxed as you need it to be. That is the real beauty of living in or visiting a region this size. It can have a big city feel or within 30 minutes in any direction you have absolute outdoor freedom! The Okanagan Valley gives you the prospect of trying something new or the comfort of keeping things more conventional. Things will inevitably change as the Okanagan matures, but the things that you likely love the most about this area will always stay the same. Lakes, mountains, streams and fields are the things that make up this beautiful landscape. While the city centers develop and improve the outer most fringes will remain the same. The Okanagan has it all, whatever you are looking for, great shopping and dining, remarkable people, camping, skiing, remote lodges and everything in between… The “old” Okanagan will stay old and the “new” Okanagan will help cater to all your wants and needs, pleasing everyone along the way.

An Artist, A Gentleman and A Cast of Characters…
Jonn Einerssen Never chase a trend, create one! That’s the sentiment that Jonn Einerssen embraced as an up and coming apprentice and artist, and still lives by to this day. He trained under Loren Adams in Vancouver where he learned as much about the things he was supposed to paint as he did about painting. A tactic that had an overwhelming affect on Jonn’s life and livelihood. When he wanted to paint waves, he was handed a book about oceanography. When he wanted to paint clouds he was handed a book about atmospheric pressure. It was these initial lessons that taught Jonn to, paint what you know. If you are more familiar with the nuances of how a wave gets pushed up onto land and curls over itself as it breaks, you are much more likely to accurately depict that scenario. These lessons positioned him to understand the water and feel the rolling undulation of the ocean. It was delightful to sit down with one of Canada’s most accomplished artists, living right here in the Okanagan. He has a freshly stretched canvas wrapped around the edges of a wooden frame propped up on an easel in is studio. He has some squiggly chalk lines throughout the entire working surface, which can only make sense to him. He wanders back and forth, eye-balling “stage one” of his masterpiece to be. Jonn says that he is intimidated by a blank canvas because there is so much expectation, he continues “… there is a definite tension before starting a project”.

Painting is one of the rare situations where using the finest materials really is the key. Paint, brushes and working surfaces, are all ingredients that add up to a superb finished product. A few more calculated swipes with his brush and the painting has already started to take a vague shape. He constantly reminds himself that talent will only take you so far and the best thing that you can do is… get out of your own way. Jonn doesn’t draw which might seem strange to many people, he has a camera but doesn’t consider himself a photographer. He is a firm believer that there are many artists out there but not necessarily a lot of art. He of course, is an artist and one of the finest to boot! In the past people have asked him why he doesn’t live by the ocean or live in the Prairies (images that are most often portrayed in his work). He has tried both and discovered that he can’t (or doesn’t) draw inspiration from the environment that he lives in, he needs to be removed from it to be motivated by it. His studio in Kelowna gives him the perfect environment to create. Jonn feels that when things are just perfect you can feel the magic flow from your heart to your hand and your hand to the canvas, you can actually feel the electricity going through the brush. Two things that you need to paint are ego and humility. Artists are independent by nature and need ego to create. Humility
Jonn Einerssen
keeps them connected to their families, friends and clients. One of Jonn’s proudest accomplishments was opening Gallery 421 in Kelowna with his lovely wife Susan. He thinks that it keeps them at the front lines of the art industry. They try to reflect the philosophy of the artists at the gallery. They always try and make a visit a memorable and enjoyable one. He likes to think that they are not pushy sales people but more like people that are happy to share their knowledge and help you make a great decision. They like to help people get what they want! Life on the farm in Saskachewan, Jonn grew up without television. He spent his days, evenings and nights watching the colours and light in the sky and the clouds morph from one position into another. The change was constant, always moving, always evolving. He started painting at the ripe old age of twenty-one with a mountain, sky and reflection landscape design, classic really. He sold his first piece of art for $35. Jonn knew from a very young age that working in a group was likely to be more efficient and successful than “going it alone”. As an 11 year old boy in Wynyard Saskachewan, Jonn had an experience that set him on a path without him ever knowing the magnitude of it. His father worked the family land and Jonn was his right hand man. He recalls one dreary, wet day when their

combine was sitting idle in the field, broken down… again. He could see that their neighbour to the east was also broken down and stranded. In a strange twist of fate, the adjacent land to the west had a disabled farm vehicle on it as well. Jonn suggested to his father that he should team up with both neighbours, sell all three beaten up combines, purchase a new(er) one and work the land in shifts. They could run the machinery twentyfour hours a day if they worked together. His father didn’t buy into the idea, but Jonn knew from that day forward that he would be stronger as part of a team than he would be battling it out in the trenches alone. Western Lights Art Group is the only marketing art group in North America. The number of members has ranged from as many as nine to as few as two, but three has turned out to be the magic number. Jonn Einerssen, Brent Heighton, & Vance Theoret. As previously mentioned, artists have a tendency to be independent but these three work well together, they help each other. The original members have been together for over 30 years! All three share a similar philosophy so there is never any tension, never any issues. They are all the same by nature and by that they are connected. If something doesn’t work, they learn from and move, always refining their and fine tuning their operation. As a group they can make decisions, and that removes the me… me… me… that many people suffer from. The secret is, just work together and just let the serendipity happen.
Brent Heighton
Vance Theoret
They have three distinctly different styles. Brent is an impressionist, Jonn is a romantic colourist and Vance is a stone carver. Jonn says that he has drawn influences from both of the other members and some of his newer style with more angles in the clouds has really connected him with a younger crowd. When they do large art shows, they support each other, relieve each other and promote each other. If someone is tired, someone else stands in, just like the theory that Jonn proposed to his father standing in that field in Saskachewan all those years ago. There is another dynamic to these architects of art. Southern Lights Art Group was developed to 26 | ABSOLUTE 2016 / 2017

appreciate the difference in light, shadows and glows. Cabo San Lucas is home to their southern gallery, and a slew of artists that they connect with, it is like their family down south. Some even say they are known as the Three Amigos of Art. When confronted with the actual question of who is the artist, who is the gentleman and who is the character, Jonn didn’t hesitate for a moment. “We are all characters, we all like to have fun and especially laugh, humour runs the world.” He continued by saying “We all embrace each role in the title, if one member is being a character, one of us will fill in as the gentleman”. The balance is constant but the roles are always changing.
They have three entirely different personalities but use each others strengths to ensure sustained success. If you know them, you might think it is obvious who is the gentleman, who is the artist and who the character is, but clearly their individuality, nature, charm and charisma allows each of them to play all three roles. It was an unbelievable experience being in Jonn Einerssen’s studio, sitting with him, watching him, drinking coffee with him and just listening to him. He is a true personality, has great spirit and a very down to earth disposition. It was truly fitting that the last thing he said was “Painting isn’t work… everything else is”. Humbly spoken by a modern day artistic champion. Jonn exemplifies being an artist, a gentleman and especially a character!

ABSOLUTE | GOLF
Genre-Defying Golf in The Thompson Okanagan by Andrew Penner What comes to mind when you think of the Thompson Okanagan? The sparkling lakes that sit snug in the valleys? The arid, vineyard-checkered hillsides that are home to some of the most picturesque wineries in North America? The beautiful mountains and backcountry parks that support a host of outdoor activities? The quaint lakeside towns? For me, and many others, the answer is all of that. And one more key thing: the golf.
peppered courses of Arizona. (Minus the large saguaro cacti!)
Another course in the south Okanagan with a decidedly “desert” feel is Nk’Mip Canyon Desert GC, which features two distinctly different nines. While the front nine meanders through the trees and is a sheltered oasis, the back nine darts through canyons and desert and showcases the rocky terrain to a tee. Sonora Dunes, a charming 9-holer that’s located at the luxurious Nk’Mip The Thompson Okanagan is blessed with an abundance of great Resort near downtown Osoyoos, is another course that rightfully golf courses. From Osoyoos in the south to Kamloops in the belongs in the “desert” genre. Obviously, with its fairways that North, the region is rich with rewarding courses that will test also careen alongside the vineyards, the wine theme is certainly every club, every shot, in your bag. And the courses in this region, another memorable component of the executive-length course. which now number over 70, comprise a unique and diverse Not surprisingly, this is a theme that surfaces numerous times in collection. Virtually every genre of the game is represented. the Thompson Okanagan. In fact, the region could lay claim to its own unique genre – the vineyard course! Mountain, parkland, desert, inland links, it’s all there. About the only genre that’s missing is a seaside links! But without a sea, If so, Fairview Mountain in Oliver, a rolling, mountainside well, what d’ya do? (Easy, actually. You just throw a few fabulous campaign that’s surrounded by some some of the most prized lakeside courses into the mix, which are more than adequate vineyards in the South Okanagan, could be the flag bearer. The replacements!) scenic course, a mature, 7,000-yard test that’s rightfully appeared on SCOREGolf’s esteemed Top 100 Courses in Canada list, has Unquestionably, desert golf is a rare treat in Canada. In fact, it all: dramatic elevation change, towering pines, outstanding many foreign visitors are shocked to discover that Canada course conditions, a beautiful finishing run, and, of course, actually has desert golf. (Snow golf, maybe!) But we do. In postcard views of the vineyards. fact, the Thompson Okanagan is home to Canada’s only true desert. And, fittingly, some of the most interesting courses in And, just for good measure, how about one more genre? The the Thompson Okanagan are found in the rugged hills of this orchard course! Throughout the Thompson Okanagan hectares scorching micro-climate. upon hectares of fruit orchards – cherries, apples, peaches, and more – line the sun-soaked valleys. Not surprisingly, there are Just minutes from the United States border, the Osoyoos Golf many courses that meander through these pastoral settings. The Harvest Club in Kelowna might be the trump card when it Desert Gold, a 6,500-yard track that tumbles and rolls on an aerie comes to “the orchard course”. through aromatic apple trees that provide plenty of ambiance. (The non-stop views of Okanagan Lake also add to the allure.) Golfers needing a quick snack have been known to enjoy the bounty of what’s growing all around them! Not surprisingly, none of the courses in the Kelowna stray far from the beautiful orchards and vineyards. Tower Ranch, a visually stunning Thomas McBroom design that is as challenging as it is beautiful, parades along tidy orchards on the front nine before rising to an unforgettable back nine that’s routed through a tucked-away mountain valley. The hair-raising holes that slide along the benches and tumble down the hillsides afford a one-of-a-kind experience. A pint on the clubhouse patio, with glorious views of the lake and the city of Kelowna, is a perfect way to cap off a round at Tower Ranch. Gallagher’s Canyon is another long-standing favourite in the Kelowna area that serves up a classic Okanagan golf experience. Memorable holes that twist through the pines and plunge down the hillsides give this course its status as top-tier play in the area. The layout, strong enough to test the top touring professionals in Canada during the Mackenzie Tour’s GolfBC Championship, is not extremely long, but requires a thoughtful, strategic approach. Accuracy and distance control, not sheer power, is the order of the day. Birdies can certainly be made, especially on some of the reachable par-5s, but miss shots in the wrong place and Gallagher’s can seem like a bear! Speaking of “bears”, The Okanagan Golf Club boasts an 18hole Nicklaus design – aptly called “The Bear” - that’s always considered one of the “must plays” in the region. However, as good as The Bear is, both in terms of its superb conditioning and bold shaping, “The Quail,” the other championship-calibre course at the 36-hole facility, is every bit its equal. With two courses, an outstanding practice facility, and all the amenities you’d expect from a world-class facility, The Okanagan Golf Club is one of the go-to spots for golfers visiting the Thompson Okanagan. Conveniently located just a few minutes from the airport, this is a tucked-away enclave that’s one of the most desired places to live – and play! - in the Okanagan. For people who call the area home – or visitors on an extended stay - the Play Golf Kelowna program is worth looking into.
With the cost-savings benefit of purchasing the card, additional courses in the area, such as Kelowna Springs, Sunset Ranch, Shadow Ridge, and Shannon Lake, are yours to play at significant discounts. For more information on the card check out www.playgolfkelowna.com. Golfers visiting the Thompson Okanagan would be wise to also explore the awesome courses in Vernon, Kamloops, Sicamous, and Salmon Arm. In Kamloops, for example, five outstanding courses (check out www.golfkamloops.com) are waiting in the wings. Tobiano, a dazzling lakeside course with an off-the-charts “wow” factor, certainly merits a visit. Another Thomas McBroom design that has garnered numerous awards, Tobiano is a genredefying test that encapsulates everything that is great about the Thompson Okanagan. Greens cling to the deep ravines, hang high above the aerie benches, and broad fairways dive toward the baby-blue water of Kamloops Lake. It delivers an idyllic Thompson Okangan golf experience that will be stamped on your brain for years to come. Although Tobiano is often considered the poster child for golf in the Kamloops area, the other tracks – Rivershore, Kamloops Golf & Country Club, Talking Rock, and Sun Rivers – can hardly play second fiddle. These are first-rate courses - designed by the likes of Robert Trent Jones, Graham Cooke, and Les Furber - and they all have plenty of virtues. Indeed, the virtues of the Thompson Okanagan golf scene are, perhaps, no better displayed than in Vernon. Dramatic courses that soar high in the rugged hills overlooking the majestic lakes offer the quintessential Okanagan golf experience. The Rise, a Gene Bates and Fred Couples design, with its plunging holes overlooking the lakes and vineyards, has photo-ops galore. And Predator Ridge, a two-course feast that boasts more eyepopping holes than, perhaps, any other facility in the Thompson Okanagan, epitomizes what golf in the region is all about. The Doug Carrick-designed Ridge Course, voted the Best New Course in Canada by SCOREGolf Magazine when it opened in 2010, is exceptional. It’s fun, playable, and exciting from start to finish. Is it mountain golf? Sure. Desert golf? Maybe. Inland links? Why not. I know, let’s just call it Thompson Okanagan golf…a genre that you should get acquainted with.

THE OKANAGAN’S FINEST IN DINING It would be impossible to satisfy everyones taste buds, all the time. And even if you could, food fanatics would lose the appreciation for what they really enjoy and… don’t like as much. This variation in quality and taste is what really lets you pin point the flavours that you desire the most! Sometimes it is these less than perfect experiences that truly define the amazing ones. In the Okanagan Valley, you will only get to enjoy those perfect experiences. The Okanagan offers such a wide variety of culture when it comes to food and dining. Every nationality is handsomely represented from Vernon to Osoyoos. From big name, familiar restaurant chains that comfort you as you know what you are getting, to little “hole in the wall” eclectic spaces that people line up for. There is an appie or main dish that will make even the most critical foodie salivate!

Because of the hot and dry summers, some of the best and finest restaurants are located at wineries and golf courses. It is that outdoor, patio dining lifestyle that defines and exemplifies the Okanagan. Even if you don’t golf or drink wine, one thing is for sure, you need eat! The term “farm-to-table” is the expression of the year in the rest of the world but chefs and cooks around here have been practicing this mantra for many years in the Okanagan Valley, it only makes sense, really. If the finest vegetables, herbs and fruits are all grown in your backyard, sensibly one should harvest and serve them. The fresh food that is served here has an overwhelming essence that will reawaken your appetite for an outstanding dining experience. Welcome to dining in the Okanagan and the relentless pursuit of the perfect dish, both conventional and unique.

It’s no surprise that the Vineyard Terrace Restaurant at CedarCreek Estate Winery ranks among the top restaurants in Kelowna; look it up on Tripadvisor to see for yourself. At a winery that was one of B.C.’s first eight pioneering wineries, ‘Respecting the land’ is the apotheosis of their philosophy and every effort is made for each bottle to be a true expression of their distinct terroir, the land where their wines are born. The food at the Vineyard Terrace Restaurant carries this philosophy through. Their seasonal farm-to-table menu changes every other week and all of their produce comes from Okanagan farms with a few meats from the interior. Chef Jeremy Tucker partners with passionate local producers to create a menu that offers a tantalizing taste of local, real food. In Europe “piekfein” is a term used to describe the best, perfection or something that is “top-notch”. We adopted this fitting term with our own Okanagan twist. “Peak” because of our physical geographic setting and “fine” because we will offer the freshest and finest products that the Okanagan Valley has to offer. The mood of PeakFine is set the moment you enter - an iridescence from crystals infused everywhere; the fireplace, chairs and overhead lighting, providing a luminous luxury that is palpable. The lunch menu is changed regularly, to reflect the fresh, locally sourced dishes available. The dinner menu at PeakFine is also created around products from local farms, vineyards, orchards and fine-food producers. Dinner reservations are recommended, and we feature select entertainment in PeakFine every Friday and Saturday evening from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm.

No Ceiling Okanagan’s Fine Wine Potential. by Jim Tobler
Visitors and residents alike are finding something remarkable in the Okanagan wine industry. The ceiling for high-end quality appears to be rising, even disappearing, as vines mature, knowledge increases, and international expertise arrives, avidly interested in how blessed this region is for viticulture. Eyebrows were raised, certainly, when Mission Hill’s Oculus red blend passed the one-hundred-dollar mark, but by then there had been a proliferation of premium wines on the market. Such intrepid wineries as Painted Rock, Meyer Family Vineyards, Foxtrot, have been producing increasingly terrific wines, going from strength to strength. Wineries like Moon Curser, exploring the terroir for matches with more obscure varieties, have shown that the region can support a great arneis, grenache, even tannat. Don Triggs and his Culmina winery have made a deep impression. Mr. Triggs spent many years developing the project, and, as the old Orson Welles saying goes, they did not serve any wine before its time. Mr. Triggs says,
with a hint of delight in his voice, that “B.C. wines are already challenging the quality of the world’s best and we are doing this with the majority of our vineyards being less than 25 years old. Continuing to work with and understand the nuances of our terroir and the graceful aging of our vineyards is going to create unfathomable possibilities for continued growth in quality.” That is a great word, “unfathomable”. John Skinner, proprietor of Painted Rock, said, not so long ago, while contemplating a glass of his syrah, that “around 2009, we saw a dramatic uptick in quality. The wines were taking on nuance and depth that we had not obtained before. It is incredibly exciting, to know the potential is virtually unlimited.” Pioneering Mission Hill winemaker John Simes has repeatedly stated that as knowledge of what grapes will match with what soils, even down to small lots or parcels of land, quality will simply and inevitably surge, and probably surprise even the most ardent optimist.

VALLEY PIONEERS We speak to General Manager Scott Locke, at Kelowna’s spectacular CedarCreek Estate Winery Left photo: Scott Locke What makes CedarCreek vineyards so special? The locations we have selected. From the steep, sun exposed slopes of the CedarCreek vineyards in Kelowna to the stone drenched soil of our Desert Ridge vineyard in Osoyoos, we have spent a lot of time finding the perfect sites and planting the right varieties. Every vineyard site is unique and it is about expressing the site where your vines are planted. Combine our special vineyards with the old vines and care and attention and you have the makings of great wine. What is the reason behind the success of your Vineyard Terrace Restaurant? It is an unmistakable truth of wine that its very best friend is food. And with a menu like ours, created with ingredients sourced from local farms, we are not only bringing the wine but all of the Okanagan to life. Pair that with a setting nestled in the vineyards with breathtaking views and its a dining experience that leaves you with a whole new appreciation for what dining should be.

CedarCreek Estate Winery was one of the first 8 pioneering wineries in British Columbia. Right from the early onsets, CedarCreek’s pioneering has been tempered by patience and perseverance. Our ideals matured into our philosophy: “Respect the land, honour tradition, pursue perfection.” For almost 30 years now, we have pursued perfection and produced some of the valley’s best wines resulting in CedarCreek being twice recognized as “Canada’s Winery of the Year”. Passion, tenacity, care and hard work are vital but above all we seek truth in wine. And the results show in every bottle. On that, you have our word.
The world is a Big Place, why did you choose the Okanagan? I’m very familiar with Kelowna having spent my summers as a child in the Okanagan Valley. First on Skaha Lake in Kaleden at Ponderosa Point and then in my teens in West Kelowna. My strong family connection with CedarCreek began with my cousin and later my father who ran the distribution and warehousing for the winery. Today with a young family and my son in kindergarten, this was the right time. Kelowna is known for its outstanding public school system and community spirit, Go Rockets! - Scott Locke

Howard Soon, Master Winemaker at Sandhill, and another pioneer of the region, has been making wines for the Small Lots program for years now, getting intriguing, charming wines such as barbera and tempranillo, along with the more obvious merlot, cabernet, syrah. He has launched a set of two Soon series wines, a red blend dominated by cabernet, and a chardonnay. These two wines are a clear, evocative statement about quality in the Okanagan. They are wines of distinction, finesse, power, and show just how far the region has come in terms of playing with the big boys from the USA and Europe, or any premium wine region for that matter. Another great example of what is going on is Okanagan Crush Pad and Haywire winemaker Matt Dumayne. With on the ground insights and advice from the great Alberto Antonini, Haywire is making delicious wines with minimal intervention. “It’s
almost like my job will become redundant,” says Dumayne with a smile. You can find sheep grazing in the vineyards, concrete fermenting “eggs”, and some amazing wines. And now, in a bold, but highly self-assured move, the von Mandl Family Estates group has launched a project called Checkmate. This project is nothing short of a shout from the hillside vineyards that quality wine in the Okanagan is entering a new, exciting phase, in which the best wines take second place to no one. Checkmate winemaker Phil McGahan, who came from the iconic Williams-Selym winery in Sonoma, California, was deeply impressed upon his first visit to the region, and his enthusiasm has only grown as he prepares for his second vintage at Checkmate. “We are only at the beginning,” he says. “But we are able to put the necessary resources into this, thanks to Anthony.” Anthony is Anthony von Mandl, of course,

VALLEY TEAM We Speak to Jeff & Decoa Harder and Partner Jay Paulson of Ex Nihilo Vineyards in Lake Country Left photo: Jay Paulson, Decoa and Jeff Harder What Makes A Visit To your Vineyard So Unique ? We created first and foremost to produce wines that exceed expectations, to deliver in the bottle is paramount. We also wanted to create a place where people could experience the essence of the our winery and our culture, to feel our passion. From the moment you enter Ex Nihilo, our goal is to share, educate and entertain. We want our guests to feel they enjoyed a valuable experience by stopping in; and looking forward to their next visit. A winery visit also includes experiencing the stunning Gallery Creatio featuring local Okanagan figurative and abstract artists. Last year we opened Chaos Bistro. Pairing our wines with Wood Fired Pizza and other exciting tapas will extend your epicurean experience in Ex Nihilo’s courtyard. What is YOUR wine making Philosophy? Attention to the details and to compromise nothing. Balance is the key to great wines and we take great care and pride in farming our vineyards sustainably and responsibly. We keep in mind that Mother nature always has the last bat, but we work hard and let our passion join her. That’s when our dedication to our craft shines in the bottle. We would rather explain the cost of quality in our wines , rather than for its absence. If it was not gold ...It would be easy.

A tribute to a friendship and a pact that will last a lifetime. The friendship dates well over 38 years. In grade 9 these two characters swore that they would be business partners and that pact has come true. They spoke of being concert promoters to fashion designers, but one thing was constant, It was going to be friendship first. Today they have been called the “Glimmer Twins “ of the wine business. When Jay took the roll as winemaker, it was his quest to be the best and to conquer the heartbreak grape placing Ex Nihilo on the world stage. His goal is to make more amazing wine than Jeff can sell, where Jeff wants to sell more than he can make... Fortunately they have Decoa, who keeps the boys grounded and to the beat of the drum. After winning the Lt.. Governor’s Award for the best Pinot Noir in BC, we would say, let the boys take centre stage and play some Rock and Roll.... They deserve it!

What makes the Okanagan wine scene so exciting? When we first cut our teeth in the business, there was approximately 120 wineries in the Province. We thought that was a lot at the time. Sadly Okanagan wines did not blip much on the radar outside the Western Provinces. We felt that we were on a football field that had not yet been played on. Today there is well over 320 wineries and the support of wine consumers, restaurants, and retail in all Provinces has also increased greatly. Our wines now shine brightly on the world stage too. We have won gold medals from the world prestigious Riesling du Monde, and the Lt. Governor’s Award for best Pinot Noir. Our wines are now in Hong Kong, Mainland China and the USA. Media from all over the world is recognizing our industry in the Okanagan and claiming that we may be the next Napa Valley. List five words that best describe your character and work ethic. 1) Team work 2) Dedication 3) Desire 4) Determination 5) Passion. You need all of these to make it in this business baby! The words overlap but without them the marriage in the wine business won’t work. Our team at Ex Nihilo is the best. There is a clear understanding of what our goals and philosophies are and everyone on our team feels the same way. If you get up in the morning and do not live by these five words, the wine business is not for you. However, when you put them together and swim up the river the same way there is romance by the bushel...

who envisioned something very like this scenario in the early 1980s, when many folks thought he was a little crazy for thinking this region could be a world player. He has remained steadfast in developing the vineyards, and making largely estate-grown wines. Mr. Skinner, who places some of his wines in foreign markets like Denmark and the United Kingdom, says “We do that because it is about showing people all over the world that wines from this region are worthy of consideration,” he says. “We could sell every drop we make right here at home, but I feel we can start representing Canadian wine on the world stage, something I feel is very important.” So, what is Checkmate, exactly? Mr. McGahan uses individual parcels, select rows, even, of grapes from three vineyards: Heritage, on the Golden Mile Bench; Barn Vineyard on Black Sage Bench; Border Vista Vineyard on Osoyoos East Bench. The fruit is hand-picked, wild-fermented, and allowed to fully express itself, with extremely minimal intervention. Five unique chardonnays are the result: Capture; Queen Taken; Little Pawn; Fool’s Mate; Attack. These are all wines of distinction, with plenty of structure, expressive fruit, ability to age, some more reminiscent of Burgundy than others, but very much expressions of the Okanagan.

So, at the top end, where Checkmate asks for and gets, easily, in and around 100 dollars a bottle (some more, some a little less), things look, if anything, to be moving into even greater heights. This creates something of a trickle down, since those maturing vineyards Mr. Triggs references mean that in another 25 years’ time, with all that accumulated knowledge to go along with it, there will be startling advances in quality not just at the top, but throughout all the price points. Wineries like Liquidity will be making viognier that might be even more spectacular than what they make today. Established wineries such as Quails’ Gate, Poplar Grove, Joie, Tinhorn Creek, Burrowing Owl, and so many more, are making their best wines right now, and that is actually a trend. As the hospitality and restaurant industries pick up the pace, there truly has never been a better time to spend a few days in the Okanagan. The food at Summerhill Winery, for example, served on their lovely terrace, is effortlessly great, with organic wines ready-made to match. Summerhill is a great reminder that those treasured memories of terraces and vistas on the Mediterranean, splendid as they are, can be made anew right here at home.

Valley GUY We speak with Tony Holler, proprietor of Poplar Grove Winery. Born in Summerland and familiar with the Okanagan’s fruitful bounty, he sets out to make world-class wines. Left photo: Tony Holler The world is a big place, why did you choose the Okanagan? I was born in Summerland and grew up farming my family’s apple orchard so I was no stranger to the beauty and bounty of the Okanagan Valley. About ten years ago, my wife Barb and I decided that the Okanagan Valley was the most beautiful place we had ever been. My passion is great wine and I knew that the Okanagan Valley could produce the fruit that would allow us to make world-class wines. We decided then and there to move back to the Okanagan Valley.

The Valley has attracted so much talent, all with an incredible amount of commitment to the land and to continuous improvement to the winemaking processes. Each year, the Okanagan wine community’s knowledge of the climate, the soil and their land grows. Discovering mesoclimates and microclimates, deciding which clone and root stock is best suited to the soil, and using this information to inform the planting of new vineyards throughout the valley is very exciting.
What are the future plans in store for your winery? Now that the doors to Poplar Grove’s brand new winery are open year round, our plan is to invite the world to visit us on the Naramata Bench. We can’t wait for everyone to experience our signature wines! A few years back, we created the Poplar Grove Wine Club. Becoming a wine club member is the newest way to be a part of the Poplar Grove family. Our members enjoy discounts on direct wine purchases and invitations to exclusive events at the winery. Together, we are growing our wine club and I personally invite everyone to join us on our journey to make truly great wines!
What is the best insider tip for pairing food and wine together? The best tip I have ever heard for pairing food and wine is to make sure you are eating and drinking exactly what you like with your favourite people in a fantastic place. One July long weekend as great friends and I were sitting at Poplar Grove on the Vanilla Pod Restaurant patio waiting for the fireworks, we opened a bottle of the 2007 Legacy and had it with Chef Bruno’s seared rare beef tenderloin topped with warmed olive oil and finished with sea salt. It was a perfect Okanagan summer evening with the greatest of friends, and the food and wine couldn’t have tasted any better.

MOVING HEAVEN AND EARTH Gerhard Blenk has never been driven by money, he has been motivated by a passion for challenge, like the process of turning a wild piece of land into a picturesque living area and a vision of an eternal family legacy that will last for generations to come.

A
s a young German country boy, when Gerhard Blenk came to Canada the first time, he and three of his closest friends made their way on horseback and settled in to live in the woods in the Alberta Wilderness. The tall trees provided shelter from the sun, cover from the rain and a bounty of fire wood to provide heat at night, cook food and boil their camp tea pot. They had horses that grazed in the nearby clearings and had one rifle between the four of them for hunting. They ate wild game meat and became one with nature. As summer turned to autumn and autumn to winter, the grassy food source for the horses slowly got covered by a white duvet of snow. As beautiful as it was, they were no longer able to keep their horses fed and it was time to make a move. So they saddled up and headed East, almost 450 kilometers on horseback to Edmonton. They stayed at rural farms over night and did some work for food. So, with this experience of great hospitality by Canadian farmers and ranchers, Gerhard fell in love with Canada and still is to this day. Upon their arrival to Edmonton they were faced with the groups first big decision, what to do with the horses? The first offer came from a butcher, who suggested $25 a horse was fair these days. Gerhard and his friends could have used the money at the time but didn’t want to see their companion horses marched off to be processed so they passed on the offer. That still left them with the issue of finding somewhere safe for the horses. Gerhard’s mother had left him DM 15,000.00 in her will when she passed away. Gerhard decided to send for the money so he and one of his friends could purchase a 40 acre
parcel of land together in what today is a part of Sherwood Park, a suburb of Edmonton. It had a broken fence and an old barn on it. Together the friends fixed the fence and built a shelter for the horses. But now Gerhard decided that maybe his time here had drawn to a close and that it would be the best to make his way back to Germany. Almost ten years fast forward… he has now made a career in the oil industry, married and had children. His love for Canada and its natural landscape however lived on, and every year Gerhard took a vacation to Alberta to see his friends. They took the horses out into the wild in an antique truck they had converted to transport up to 4 horses. One night back in Germany the phone rang. It was Gerhard’s friend from Edmonton, co-owner of the land, and he had some exciting news! That news turned out to be what most people would consider to be really big news: Someone had made an offer, an astronomical offer on that plot of land that they had bought all those years ago. It turned out the offer came from a developer, a term that Gerhard wasn’t initially familiar with. But being a developer was something that interested him. He was excited at the prospect of building roads, infrastructure, utilities and of course, houses. And with that Blenk Development Corp. was born. Now Gerhard and his family are on a rolling vacation from Edmonton to Vancouver in the early 80s. Gerhard headed out early every day on his road bike while his wife and children

started late to follow in a camper. Along the way Gerhard got too far ahead and had to wait until his family in the camper were able to catch up to him. A friendly lady at a roadside fruit stand must have sensed that he was very thirsty and offered him a delicious glass of local apple juice. It was, for sure the best juice that Gerhard ever had. It was not far from there that the Blenk family discovered Kelowna, and could not believe what a charming little town it was, surrounded by hillsides, orchards and lakes. In the mid 80s Gerhard heard of a piece of land for sale in the rolling hills above Kelowna, he remembered the beauty of this area and took the trip to have a closer look. He came to the conclusion that Kelowna was the kind of place that people will love and eventually discover. Well, it turns out that he was right. After buying the first piece of land, Gerhard started to assemble adjacent parcels. We are not just talking about a few plots, in the end he had purchased a total of 2000 acres of connected land from approximately 40 different owners. At that same time, the initial 40 acre development in Sherwood Park had sold out. Gerhard bought into Ekistics, a successful residential planning company in Vancouver to have ultimate control over the planning of what is now called “Wilden”. Family has always been an important part of the equation. Gerhard’s son Martin moved to Vancouver to work at Ekistics for a while and was hands on in establishing the master plan for over 2,400 units of residential homes at Wilden. The late 90’s saw the first roads starting to weave their way up the slopes and the preservation of the ponds at Wilden began. The first lots were sold in 2002 and the first houses were being built in 2003.

About 600 lots have been developed to date and there are 1800 lots to go. Hilltops and bluffs are peppered with beautiful craftsman style homes. Wilden constantly reinvests the profit they make into the development with the intention of the project carrying on for at least two more generations. This is literally the consummate family operation. Gerhards daughter Karin has moved over from Germany with her family in 2011 to help manage the growth of Wilden. There are 9 direct employees that run the development and sales, plus the planning, construction and marketing of these multifamily projects. Most manpower is outsourced as they require it. There are four select builders that Wilden clients can pick to build their dream home. All this provides a huge injection into the local economy. There is a tremendous focus on nature in Wilden, walking trails, bodies of water and forested areas are all a natural aspect that really tie the community together. Gerhard has always had a keen interest in environmental friendly construction. 98% of the homes at Wilden use geothermal heat pumps. They circulate the water down, up to 300 feet into the ground to get the natural heat up from the earth in winter and cool the house down in summer. This way Wilden is giving back to the environment, displacing an increasing amount of greenhouse gas every year. GeoTility and Terra Source, a pioneering geothermal utility provider, are local companies that Gerhard has initiated and brought forward together with a partner.
There are areas in the development that are zoned for multi-family townhomes, commercial property and even a school. And, there is a 3-5 year plan proposed for a future “town center” with shops and services. Townhome neighbourhoods have become part of Wilden’s philosophy, since they very much do not want to become known as “snob hill”! They want to cover all spectrums and aspects of home building. To date, every home has significantly appreciated in value, which makes for happy neighbours! Through this whole journey, Gerhard Blenk has recognized that the best thing that he has learned is that he still has the ability to learn. And now, at the fine age of 75, he steps back from the day to day operations and focuses on enjoying life a little more. His hobbies include riding his motorcycle and road bike, skiing, hiking and spending as much time as possible with his family. In a final admission, Gerhard confesses that his real favourite hobby is Wilden. Do yourself a favour and take a tour around the neighbourhoods, small lakes, town house developments and the beautiful Skylands, where you can almost see forever! The long term vision of a nature-loving country boy has taken flight into a beautiful community that has no plans of slowing down.

Osoyoos The lazy daze of summer…
I
f you haven’t already discovered Osoyoos, then prepare to be amazed! This little gem boasts weather statistics that you would expect to find somewhere closer to the equator. Spring comes early, and summers are hot and long - really hot and really long, lasting much beyond summer’s official end. With no humidity, Osoyoos is often singled out as the hottest and driest spot in the country, more than anywhere else during the summer months. The beauty of this scenario is that all the heat from the daytime is accompanied by cool refreshing nights. Another bonus: because the temperatures are so high, day after day, Osoyoos is home to Canada’s warmest freshwater lake, which is quite a designation. As you can imagine, it is a huge draw for boaters, swimmers and beach loungers alike. The word Osoyoos translates to “narrowing of the waters”. When you first lay eyes on this quaint little town, you will see that it all makes sense. Osoyoos Lake tapers in the middle and that is exactly where the town site lies. Water to the north and water to the south, this is a true lake playground. Commercial orchards are still very visible and a huge part of the local economy. For obvious reasons, with the growing popularity of viticulture (the cultivation of grapevines) some have chosen to convert their crops to wineries. And,
they have done so with great success. Nk’Mip Cellars, Adega on 45th Estate Winery, Moon Curser Vineyards and Young & Wyse Collection are true in-town Osoyoos wineries, while the hillsides and surrounding areas are littered with world famous brands. In an environment where there is so much sun and summer, comes a bountiful outdoor lifestyle. Golf, cycling and any watersport are incredibly popular. Swimming in the lake or at one of the resorts’ pools is also a great way to pass some time! With an influx of super modern upscale accommodations in the area, places like Watermark Beach Resort and Walnut Beach Resort have the best of all amenities, coupled with comfort & style. A real treasure in Osoyoos is Nk’Mip Resort. This is ‘one stop shopping’ at its finest, as the resort provides every aspect of relaxation, from a spa, winery and cultural centre, to a golf course and an RV park. The celebration of the legends, the lands and the people at the cultural centre is a must see while visiting. Time to relax, ease back in your favourite beach chair, and sip your favourite local vintage, all the while dangling your feet into your favourite warm lake. All of this combined, adds up to a level of relaxation that is beyond your most vivid dream. The lazy days of summer are here, and you’ve made it!

ight in the heart of the Okanagan’s wine growing region lie the communities of Okanagan Falls and Oliver. This area is well known to be the Wine Capital of Canada and has a renowned reputation for producing award winning vintages year after year. Resting on the southern shores of Skaha Lake, is a small community surrounded by vineyards, a variety of wildlife, and many unique types of desert flora & fauna. Okanagan Falls is a unique area in the Valley; once carved out by long forgotten glaciers, Okanagan Falls is just beyond the northernmost point of the Great Basin Desert and is the narrowest part of the Okanagan Valley. With vineyards that stretch out northwards towards the eastern bench of Skaha Lake, across the warm waters to Kaleden, and finally down South, over the rolling hills of Vaseux Lake, Okanagan Falls is truly the Heart of Wine Country. If you follow the rivers waters south of Okanagan Falls along the highway, you come to Vaseux Lake, a naturalists’ haven. Home to protected marshlands, Vaseux Lake is a migratory bird sanctuary, with a wooden boardwalk that allows visitors to wander through the undisturbed, natural plant & animal life. Set up with benches along the way, and a bird blind, bird watching is made easy.

From the light spring time weather that brings out the colourful blossoms and the hot dry days of summer that develop flavours, to the cooler, colour-explosion of fall harvest, and crisp freshness of winter, not only do the fruits & vegetables love it here, the people do too. As irrigation systems grew & developed in the South Okanagan, along with an influx of soldiers looking to settle after the First World War, fruit orchards became popular as the area established itself. With interests turning towards growing grapes for wine in the 80’s, many fruit orchards were replaced with vineyards. No one could have ever projected the success that this irrigation system would bring and what a profound impact it would have on the entire area. Now vineyards and orchards are a livelihood, a hobby and has even spawned its own following: Agri-Tourism. Don’t pass on the chance to travel south to Wine Country and take in all the sights & services of this spectacular area.

Penticton Naramata Where beach life and world-class vintages collide…
S
ome communities are blessed with lakes, others are lucky enough to have mountains, and some even have rivers. Well, Penticton is lucky enough to have all of this! The town site is pinched between two large lakes conjoined by a river. It’s recommended to go floating down the canal that connects Okanagan Lake and Skaha Lake. This is a true adventure, embraced by locals & visitors to the area alike! Nothing says summer time fun like lakes and rivers. Like much of the Okanagan, Penticton is subject to phenomenal weather. Hot & dry during the day light hours, and cooler during the night. This makes for the perfect combination of all day fun followed by great sleeping weather. For winter sports enthusiasts, Apex Mountain Resort is the local’s choice. Penticton is located at the southern end of Okanagan Lake (and the northern end of Skaha Lake). On the Okanagan Lake side of town, the beach runs along Lakeshore Drive, and is simply amazing. It stretches for a few kilometers and is directly across the street from a long row of hotels, B&B’s, restaurants and services. It’s like having paradise downtown! South of the city is Skaha Lake which gives you a similar experience, yet somehow, totally different. Lush parks with great shade trees and picnic tables flank the beach. This spot is more of a destination, meaning you can’t walk out of your hotel room and suddenly
be at the beach. At both locations, the beaches slowly slip into their respective lakes, perfect for wading in the water with kids, or going a little deeper and heading out for a swim. The hillsides above the eastern shores of Okanagan Lake are home to some of the most famous wineries in the region; this is Naramata, and it’s entirely different than its neighbour Penticton! Known for producing some of the finest wines around, it is easy to spot the terraced benches above the lake, with row upon row of many different varieties of grapes. The vineyards have discovered that if you build it, they will come! Many of these businesses now have elaborate tasting rooms, restaurants and guesthouses. There is a whole lot more to owning a winery these days, with added features like concerts with big name & local musicians, festivals, tasting parties, weddings and fine dining. Rows of grapes, orchards, and fertile lands are traits that are shared by many towns in this grand region. Enjoyed by visitors and embraced by locals, it would be an understatement to say that the wine game has changed dramatically in the last 25 years. There are many options for fun in Penticton & Naramata, but sometimes all you really need is to sit at the beach, indulge in local vintages, and watch the sun go down…

Spectacular Waterfront Homes
Here’s what our residents are saying about the Cottages “The setting is simply stunning, the cycling is gorgeous and safe, there are wonderful hikes to explore, and there are fish just waiting to be hooked. But what we have discovered while building at The Cottages, is the wonderful community – a caring“family” of homeowners, reminiscent of the small towns in the Maritimes where I grew up. It was the location and setting that brought us to The Cottages, but it is the vibrant and welcoming community that will keep us here.”

Kelowna That Okanagan way of life
I
t is easy to see why people come to and settle down in Canada’s favourite playground. With a great mix of people, natural surroundings and huge bodies of fresh water (and dozens of smaller lakes too), the combination makes Kelowna the perfect target, not only for summer enjoyment, but year-round excitement too. Kelowna was originally established as an agricultural zone. The benches above the city to the east and the west facing slopes have been successfully producing fruits, vegetables and wine grapes for over 200 years. And when we say wine grapes, we are not talking about the extras that wind up in boxed wine. We are referring to very specific varietals that have been recognized on a global scale. This is the right place for you if you enjoy long, hot summer days on a boat, patio or even nestled down in a back yard. For the more active sportsperson there is a “cool sport” renaissance going on along the beaches of Kelowna. If you are on a boat, chances are you are wakesurfing. If you are on the shore, chances are you are about to go stand up paddleboarding. And, if the wind is howling…

chances are you are going kite boarding, a remarkable sport that can be enjoyed by spectators at Rotary Beach in the Lower Mission. More traditional sports are also highly visible, soccer, baseball, cycling, skateboarding, skiing and golfing are super popular with locals and guests. For those seeking a more relaxing pace, all you need to do is pull up a piece of beach and sit back and say “ahhh…” There is a wide range of choices when it comes to somewhere to rest your weary bones. Large busy tracts of sand are popular with the younger crowd or visit one of the smaller more secluded public accesses found all along the shoreline. Getting out and discovering new spots to stretch out your hammock or open up your chaise lounge is a great way to spend an afternoon, day, or even a weekend. For winter exploits, Big White is less than an hour away and there are endless sledding and snowshoeing opportunities in every direction. Kelowna is the largest city in the Okanagan and it is constantly undergoing an economic boom. It has the benefits of a larger city but still can have that small community feel if you want it to. People that live here and visit here are all in search of the same thing, lifestyle and that Okanagan way of life!

West Kelowna The most charismatic community
M
t. Boucherie sits among the rolling hills, just south of the main highway that passes through West Kelowna. There are few communities that can make the claim that the centerpiece of the town is an extinct volcano, but, West Kelowna has that distinction. Surrounded by orchards, rolling hills and vineyards, there is lots of fertile land in the area. With all this rich soil, coupled with varied terrain, West Kelowna is an outdoor adventurers dream. Trails for hiking, paths for biking, cliffs for climbing and creeks & canyons for exploring, every valley, ravine, and gulch all lead to the water. Like many Okanagan communities, the lake is the life body of agriculture and lakeside fun. With RV parks & designated campsites within easy reach, West Kelowna is a popular choice during the summer months. Home to several very well established wineries, West Kelowna boasts an incredible wine trail with diverse destinations. The majority of the wineries in West Kelowna can be found between the highway and the lake. Part of the charm of this area is that they also house many farmgate and boutique style wineries, these too are well worth a visit. Mission Hill Family Estates has long been a presence in the wine industry and have seemingly mastered the art of eco-tourism; with a full service restaurant, an amphi-theatre which hosts a famous list of musicians & bands, and a very
large wine shop, there is so much more than just wine here. Picturesque Quail’s Gate and nearby Volcanic Hills both play home to a vineyard restaurant & patio, while providing stunning views & delicious bites. There is a large portion of West Kelowna that stretches along the shoreline of Okanagan Lake. This section of lake is the proud home of Whiplash Cable Wake Park, powered by the world famous Sesitec System 2.0, which allows four riders to be on the water at once. If you wakeboard, wakeskate or even wakeski, this is where you should spend some time! On the other end of West Kelowna’s waterfront is Gellatly Bay. Recently updated to improve the lakeside walking path, and the Aquatic Park’s wharf & diving boards, Gellatly Bay also has a zipline in addition to its clustering of beaches. Modern upscale living and a thriving agricultural community have blended together nicely. From shopping, everything wine, fruit, outdoor adventure and all points in between, West Kelowna will always bring a smile to your face. Whether you are just in town for the day, or have come to take part in the Westside Daze festivities, this dynamic area with its lively culture is waiting for you at the cross roads of modern and contemporary.
